another thing the Jams i keep mentioning are just 30-60 sec jams fuck all really while the stage crew are setting up or guitars swapped stop going on about it the jams are really fucking cool to hear because you see the band enjoying themselves

i dont think axl has looked pissed of once in 2006 on the shows ive seen either live bootlegged or streamed

Unfortunately tonight I'll be busy, first I have to go to a wedding, and then I have to go out with a chick if I wanna get married someday... 

Anyway, if you see me online, it means that my plans for getting married have changed dramatically... ;D

i played a gig at the hard rock before the RIR event, and gn'r's soundtech had dinner with my band, and he told us Duff was goin to play with Gn'r in Download, i didn't really take it that serious, but he said that was the deal they had.
and some other stuff wich i'll wait for it to happen before talking.

but this seems real now, cuz these rumblings problably have something to it. the guy was pretty straight foward and was absolute sure duff was playing with Axl at download. not the whole set, just jumpin in on a song or two. most to show there's no bad blood between the two.

Metal gigs are full of young titheads, that put me off Download, too many titheads and haters alike. I ?punched out some punk at a rammstein gig and another one at a cult of luna gig. One for throwing bottles and cups of beer into the crowd in front of us - he thought he was so macho and his freinds were slapping him on the back like he was "the man". So I fucked him on the chin and flattened him, then people started slapping me on the back -saying "well done". He looked like one of them from sum41, which was funny.
I had a bad hangover that night.

Yeah exactly, this is pretty typical of the Brits. Id imagine its alot worse at download aswell, for obvious reasons! Im English living in America, went to a concert the other week in a club and the audience hated us. We turned up battered, which no one appreciated at all.......... all they wanted to do was stand and watch the show in complete silence. Was a very wierd experience, good night though!

The first show may 12 would have to take the cake if for no other reason than they played all 6 new songs and all of the old ones except Rocket Queen.

A friend of mine who is at the concert and is seeing gnr for the 8th time has text me to say that Axl sounds bloody awful and has walked off stage at least twice, Tommy walked off once and that it's not at all a good concert for gnr.

Things must be bad before he's saying this as I've never known him to be negative about gnr in the past.

Nightrain was played unusally early... maybe this was because of the sound problems and they were gonna call it a day.... but the shows turned around so they are extending the show to make up for it.

If they really played Used To Love Her on top of the setlist they have already played, then this is easily the best setlist of the entire tour.

Download is always filmed and then they do a highlights show on channel 4, so we should get at least 1 song. But then a week or two down the line most of the headliners and main acts' bootlegs come out. Always happens at download trust me. It happnened to Velvet Revolver last year. As long as Axl doesnt specifically tell them to clamp down on leaking the footage, it shoul come out. (Just my two cents, but its all true)

Why do you care what others think about the project? As long as you like it that should be all that matters. Some people will never get past the whole name thing, but Axl knew that when he decided to call this GNR. Those people being negative should have no influence on whether you like the band or not.

Those bands broke up, guns n roses did not, in guns someone left and they were replaced thus they were always called guns n roses from the axl and traci days. This band stopped being gnr when traci left.

No matter what there are going to be some reporters rip the band because some still think that Guns N Roses are the old guys, and they will compare everything to the old days. However there will also be alot of postive reviews of the shows. No matter what we are going to have to put up with the bad seeds. Axl and we all knew that would be the case. i mentioned earlier about the preference seemingly given to england and new york, and though nobody was too bothered i think i have to address the situation. i have to say that maybe i was wrong. i think this show was made special for a reason and its admirable and actually quite wonderful as to the way axl and izzy have seemingly handled this tonight.

now im not talking about axl not throwing an old school fit and storming off over the assholes and technical issues. i think what we had tonight was a determination to alleviate some of the pain that donnington had forever cast on the legacy and psyche of guns n roses and that axl wasnt going to let some idiots ruin what needed to be done.

i know it sounds far fetched and maybe even trite, but its the only reason i can think of that the show was made so special through all the bullshit.
if that crap had of been taking place at the carling weekend or even at the apollo (which wasnt actually evidence of gnr england/london favouritism/exploitation as id originally labelled it), it would have been a disaster and the band, while might not have walked, wouldnt have put in the set they seem to have done.

this show was special for a reason. donnington is where the wave broke all those years ago. hopefully tonight has finally soothed some of the pain (for it'll never completely heal).

Thats pretty funny about the dude shutting up but I don't really expect crowds specially at Download to cheer for Christina Aguilera solo.

They could easily do many things to get better crowd appreciation like starting on time, playing better solos, changing their dress, especially Tommy Stinson who wears that Riddler outfit and pretty much the rest of the band but you gotta give people something to bitch about right?

people that were at download keep bashing the band. ? Calling them " karaoke band" ? "new songs suck" ?" not worth my time ?seeing or following thios band" ? ? . ?I think this is the first gig where the majority of the crowd ?hated the band. usually the fans ?have been positive at these ? shows. ?Those fuckers didn't deserve the setlist they got. Now I am upset that Axl didn't tell them all to "fuck themselves" ?and leave in his helicopter. ? The rest of the band would have been on board ?. I know Tommy would have, he was probably pissed. ? ? These ?people are vicious, they are totally hating on the band. ? ?Reporter asks fans to summarize Download in 3 words ?and 2 fans respond with " GNR are finished " ?Guns n' Roses a disappointment". ? ?This band ?is going to have trouble surviiving. ?Axl needs his foreign fans to support him or he is finished. ?The United States ?already hates him ?he needs these people on board ?and it looks like they gave him thumbs down . ?He still has South America and Asia ?but Europe looks like they are turningn their back to him . ? I thought he would get a good reaction at Download. ?

The host of kerrang was interviewing people WHILE GNR WAS PLAYING!! Of course he's gonna get bad opinions on the band because everyone who didn't hate gnr WAS WATCHING THEM!!! And you could see on the webcam that there were a hell of a lot people enjoying the show!!!!!

As long as you follow the simple rules we have and listen to the mods when they warn you, you won't have a problem.

There are plenty of people who see GNR finished and for good reason.

Its not absurd at all they feel that way.

My interest in GNR rekindled mainly because Ron Thal joined the band otherwise I wouldnt give a shit.

The real test for this band will be how well the album is received and how well their tour in America goes.

The rest of the world may support GNR but its not that easy with America.

Exactly, the majority of metal fans weren't gonna embrace these band no matter what they did. I don't think some idiots who like to throw bottles of piss speak for all of Europe. As long as Axl performs well and shows up ontime for their shows they'll do fine. Plus I don't think the USA hates Axl, its just that it isn't 1991 anymore and he isn't viewed as a god by most music fans here anymore.

Success in America doesn't really have the last say in whether it's good or not. I'm not expecting this lineup to have any success in America whatsoever. The other thing that happened besides Izzys overall appearance was the inclusion of "Used To Love Her"

This is a bit disappointing- I thought there'd be fuckwits- for the foreigners here, in the UK download is always frequented by the awkward late teenies who think throwing shit at bands is cool, particularly bands as notorious as GnR.

Aside from the nostalgia value, they shouldn't have played download- carling festivals are a better fit for GnR, and would have a more appreciative crowd.

Fuck, this is embarrassing after the triumph that was Hammersmith.

this is one of axls finest hours. whether it translates via the sound quality due to the technical problems or not. putting that set on after the bullshit of the first part of the night is nothing short of a triumph and a testament to the dedication axl and the guys have to the cause. now whether izzy is the main reason for them turning it on or the shadow cast by the venue, its kind of moot if they're able to carry this high point through to the rest of the tour and this bands life cycle.

Oh yes, philspector- I meant I'm embarrassed by the crowd being so-called 'British'- I'm embarrassed that this happened in my country, after our crowd was so great on wednesday. It says a lot about the state, and maturity of the band they put up with the reported shit, and did by all accounts a very professional job.

Let's hold off judgment until fans that were actually at the show come back and write their reviews. Say that 20,000 people were at the show, and 25 of them were troublemakers?

If there were loud chants of "bring back Slash" or "you suck" from the entire crowd, that would be one thing. But a few rotten apples (who were probably drunk and/or high) doesn't mean a whole lot.

Donnington '88 didn't go that well either, even forgetting about the deaths- they were pretty much slated then too. It's a metal crowd- they don't get into GnR's style, for the most part. As I said, a better fit for the crowds at Reading/Leeds- I know people who still talk about how amazing Leeds 2002 was, who never were, and aren't really GnR fans.

Well then maybe they should can playing this festival in the future, I don't really remember the bad press from 88 except the deaths which no one can forget but I am sure there isn't anyone out there that enjoys trying to perform while avoiding flying beer and piss.

i dont know. i think the press reaction (if there even is one - they may have filled their gnr quota with the coverage the apollo show got) will be favourable to the band. they did the right thing and though you'll always get knobs like mick wall who have been burnt seemingly beyond repair (though i think even he'll eat his own shit if the setlist translates into a performance), i think there will be sympathy towards the band for the way they behaved after the technical and crowd problems.

No, the US doesn't hate him. The US hates rehash. Its a main reason the US tour failed in 2002. GNR fans have waited an eternity for this album. When a GNR tour happens, the fans weren't dreaming of an AFD tour.

Just remember it was a festival, and a metal festival at that. No matter what band you see at any festival, theres always going to be a lot of people there that don't like a particular band. This is one reason I don't like going to festivals. I prefer to see a band at THEIR show, with THEIR crowd. After this tour, compare the festival shows to Gn'R's own shows...theres gonna be way better crowd response at their own shows.

Looking around on the download forums, http://forums.downloadfestival.co.uk/tt.aspx?forumid=6, there's a real mix of opinions from the early posters. Lots of people seem to think that GnR blew them away, and Axl was only offstage for 30 secs or so, so it's probaably just hysteria getting us worried. Every tour has ups and downs, right?

Donington has been the scene of piss bottle fights since at least 1985 (first time I went), you could tell the experienced people - they had protective headgear. It's before my time, but I believe they still sold beer in cans at Reading festivals in the late 70s and people would throw those around.

I managed to get a decent audio for the 2nd half of the show

Why they are selling bottles at a rock concert is beyond me. Hell, at any major event in Australia, like the cricket, they sell alcohol in plastic bottles or cans. Much as it sucks to drink beer out of a plastic bottle it does stop stuff like that.

 Actually the reason why Guns N' Roses didn't have a successful 2002 tour was for a number of reasons. It wasn't just that it was a rehash tour. Axl's voice was shit, the new guys looked like tools and some of the guitar playing was horrible. Guns N' Roses fans have always been ruthless, expecting only the best out of the band, because in the past, the band gave their best. GNR fans hold Guns at a much higher level because of what they represented in the past. The important thing is that this 2006 tour is going MUCH better than 2002. Axl has returned to form, he handled the piss bottles like a man and the band is tight. What more can you ask?

 To those that complain about too many solos; its something that will be fixed eventually. Axl's older and he's been off the road for awhile. With more experience there will be fewer breaks inbetween songs. Besides, ANYONE that has watched many of the old boots know that breaks between songs are common in GNR (be it Axl's ten minute rants, Slash's improv solos, or Matt Sorum's shitty solos). This isn't something new. I'm surprised more people aren't happy that GNR are better than they have been in years. I'm a Metallica fan but I think that ever since Cliff Burton died the band has gone downhill. People should criticize James Hetfield instead, he sounds like a bitch when he sings (especially For Whom the Bells Toll for instance). I think it all stems from the fact that people regard GNR so highly. Plus Izzy joining for a few songs is the bomb shit.

This was a strange gig!!!

For the second time in a row, gnr started on time (even 5 min. to early). The beginning was kinda rough, seeing as the english folks are weird and started trowing bottles on the stage! So the show got interupted a few times and Tommy even said that they would leave if the shit didn't stop!

But Axl seemed determined to give a fantastic performance, and they changed the setlist from previous shows.
Izzy came on stage and played a few songs (including I used to love her), Baz came out to do My Michelle with Axl again too (no kid rock though).

At kerrang radio, the presenter said that Axl sounded great and he seemed to be suprised about it.

I knew this show was a bad idea. I've said it from day one, GNR isn't a good band for these metal shows. They absolutely do not fit in. I was afraid something like this would happen. Now that this show's outta the way, we just gotta worry about those Parisians starting a riot...

Nah. In fact, it was played at their first concert 01.01.01.

But its been an on and off song for the new band, sometimes they play it.

Does anybody else get the sense that Axl is on some kind of probation? I think he is just behaving so clear channel will let him do another North American Tour. Axl let Tommy be the one to tell the crowd off, that just doesn't jive right.

uh.......no.

Well it was my first and long awaited GnR gig. It was certainly most eventful, and it started off reasonably with WTTJ, Easy, Mr. B and LALD which were normal/well recieved.

Then the first of the solos started, and being as this wasn't a specific GnR gig there was a percentage of people who were either just watching it for the sake of it/moneys worth, were reasonable GnR fans back in the day or are casual GnR fans. I would say this counted for 20% of the people watching, and most of them started the typical slash chants and didn't take to the new band particularly well, either because of lack of knowledge due to no publicity (which there hasn't been over here. unless you look for it) or they think GnR died long ago.

This is when the solos especially were booed by some and bottles were thrown towrds stage. Bumblefoot especially took it in a light hearted manner, but some other didn't. There was still the majority of the crowd applauding after each solo though.

And with the tech difficulties during You Could Be Mine it was down to the guitarists to amuse the crowd, so they ended up taking the flak from those in the crowd less patient. By the time it had resumed to it's normal format Tommy announced that it's not on after being hit with a bottle of piss and that if it happened again he would leave, but if not then everyone can have a good time.

Axl soon introduced Izzy for Think About You, and the gig picked up with some meaningful perfomances of the more powerful songs which all went without a hitch or crowd trouble with everyone enjoying themselves.

At one stage Axl climbed down from the stage in front of the crowd and ran up and down letting people "touch" him. He also at one point joked "did you know that's the samew moon they had in Belfast" too which 1 of the other band members replied "You shittin?" then Axl said "I know cause my manager told me"

Axl who had always appeared cheerful and calm throughout, seemed to pick up even more by the time the encore came around saying that he "doesn't want to go home, which couldn't be said an hour ago" as he played a large encore. And after IRS which was very well recieved he said, "maybe we should think about recording that one, what with technology these days i'm sure we could find a way to actually get a recording of that" to which everyone laughed and cheered. At one point Axl also joked? by saying "i thouhgt u left the band" to Izzy

Come the end of an explosive PC everyone had enjoyed it. Even the 20% who were sceptical and critical at 1st. Which i overheard some saying "wow it was actually quite good in the end" and the non GnR fans who seen it for the sake of it, typically tried to avoid defeat by saying stuff like "well they weren't as good as Metallica" as opposed to "get off the stage" and "wheres Slash" that was shouted previously. So by the end GnR had won everyone round, what was really a good performance without any noteable errors, apart from technical difficulties.

So the only real reason for the hostility i think, is due to a minority of cynicle people who, while being happy to watch GnR were almost always going to slag em off and the unfamiliarity with the rest of the band, who were targetted during solos was pretty much the only reason they had to be negative about. But they were won round in the end, and with some actual main stream publicity and some longevity from the current line up they have the potential to be as big as before and shutting up even the ever critical rock/metal fans once more.

But Think About You was played during the 2002 but I hadn't noticed it being played yet on this tour.

All that's left from the current setlist to be played is Rhiad.

They did play Used To Love Her during the acoustic set at that club in NYC..........The Plum??

The last show in NYC featured Think About You last month, with mr. Stradlin playing along.

And Used to love her was played at the private accoustic show the following night in NYC

Here's what I posted about it at Metal Sludge - I made my mind up on the show as I was writing it. I'll try and upload some photos tomorrow as well.

Just got back from the show. Either the best or worst gig I've ever been to.

Band hit the stage 5 mins early which was a surprise - first 4 songs, WTTJ, ISE, Brownstone and LALD were off the charts, everyone hitting their notes sweet and Axl sounded tonnes better than on the 02 tour.

Problems started in KOHD. Axl had been having trouble with slipping near the front of the stage but it didn't seem to overly bother him. Then he went walkabouts at the front of the stage which in hindsight was a bad idea. Somebody got too close to him and he called the guy a cunt and itb went downhill from there.

The sound started to deteriorate as Axl described it as "the worst sound he'd had." Band leaves stage whilst the sound is sorted which was fair enough.

Robin Finck did his first solo leading into SCOM as the first rumblings of "We Want Slash" started to emerge. SCOM won the fans back over but Axl slipped big style and really lost it - berating someone at the side of the stage about "thought you'd sorted this".

Axl announces short break whilst "technical difficulties" are sorted. Cue huge bottle fight between the fans (something of an English festival tradition). Roadies covered up a patch of liquid at the front of the stage whilst Bumblefoot was sent into the line of fire to run through an instrumental Don't Cry.

Band comes back out - Axl having changed footwear - and run through YCBM. Axl didn't finish the song though and went backstage again prompting a third guitar solo which was the Beautiful/Christina Aguilera thing which did little to appease the crowd with more rumblings of "We Want Slash".

Finally back on track and the band breaks into "Better" which was met with absolute disdain. Towards the end of the song something appeared to hit Tommy and he just lost it, slung his bass to the floor, jumped on it then fired it towards a cameraman in the pit before stomping of stage. Song is met with a chorus of boos and a very audible "We Want Slash" chant.

Tommy then comes back and apologises to both Axl and the cameraman but berates the crowd telling us "I've been doing this too many fucking years to stand up here and get hit by things. Either have a good time or I'm going home." which was greeted with massive cheers. At this point it seemed like we were really watching the implosion of the band. Axl then tried to pull things together with a stirring rendition of Out Ta Get Me.

Thankfully, after another solo (piano) and the Blues, Axl manages to calm things down by introducing Izzy for Think About You which got things back on track.

November Rain was off the charts and from then on it was pretty much sweet. Sebastian owned on My Michelle. Izzy returned for Patience and stayed around for the highlight of the show, Nightrain.

Encore was Madagascar, Rocket Queen, IRS (complete with downloading rant), Chinese Democracy (changed a lot, pyro opening, slower tempo) a very patchy Used to Love Her (with Izzy, which I think Axl described as 'a mess') and finally Paradise City.

Of course, listening to Kerrang Radio on the way home it's full of Axl hate despite the fact that the guy held the show together and was pretty much spot on throughout.

My take on the show is it was pretty much the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. What was good was very good but my instincts tell me the show will be remembered for the other stuff.

If I was Axl I would drop one of the cover songs because KOHD was really tedious. The walk along the front was also a strange decision and it started to go wrong from there. From what I could tell somebody yanked at Axl and it seemed to mess with his remote microphone (somebody who was closer to the stage might be able to confirm this).

He'll take some flak for it but he was right to leave the stage whilst the sound was sorted and the problem with the stage/his footwear was addressed because the guy was putting his own health at risk.

However, at this point the band really needs to take a leaf out of the UYI line-up and learn a non-Axl cover or choose a song from the back catalogue that they can handle.

Drop some of those solos - Robin and Richard are really soulless guitar players - and fans have just not accepted them yet. A Christina Aguilera solo doesn't help either especially in a field full of pissed-up, pissed off metalheads.

After such problems do not play a new song. Better's one of my faves of the new bunch but went down like a lead balloon.

Tommy Stinson was a fucking scream. He tried to be bitchy to the crowd whilst kissing Axl's ass at the same time and just came across looking stupid. Yeah something hit him (the guy should be pleased that he's not in Bad News) but whilst we were waiting for the "technical difficulties" to iron themselves out we were all pelted with bottles, I didn't turn round and threaten to stomp off home because of it. Great to see Izzy and Sebastian - they really helped get the fans back on side.

Agree with those people who have stated that this band's version of Nightrain is the best GNR have ever done it.

All credit to Axl, and to a lesser extent Bumblefoot, who kept the show ticking along. Axl sounded great and it was only in the encore on U2LH that his voice wavered even slightly.

In conclusion it was almost a classic GNR show - great music, rants, a tantrum, everything. Anyone who says this show was shit is a fucking liar - you couldn't take you eyes off it - no one knew what was going to happen next and isn't that one of the things that makes rock n' roll so great? Here's to the UK Tour.

wow,what can i say ? ? ? ? just got home from donnington and am sunburnt to hell and back.been awake 24 hours only one day after being awake for about 37 hours total for the dublin gig.not really worth givin a review as everythings been said before in this thread.all i will say is that was one amazin fuckin show!!!!!!!!! a mix of everything.i watched poeple booin when all the shit went on in the beginning but i also saw the same poeple dancin,headbanging,chantin for more songs and even gettin out their lighters for the slow songs.ok so it got off to a good start and went a bit sour,but im certain that made this show the best iv seen so far.i said to my bro on the way to the show that i hoped they play Rocket Queen and Chinese Democracy and they fukin did ?:yes: .Axl really proved how much he wants this new band to succeed by pulling the whole show together and really kickin fukin arse. ?: ok:

The guy quoted was listening to updates on the hyperbole that is Kerrang radio. Read the reviews on here. The bottle throwing was true but it's not like the entire band got drenched or something ridiculous like that.

FANTASTIC....This was a great concert...It had some really really lows and some really really Highs..
Most of the 1st half of the concert had some techinical difficulties (Sound). Then at one song Axl slipped (Almost fell down) and he gave the middle finger to a roadie. After the song he stopped the concert and the whole group went backstage...The roadies came back to fix the floor or something...At one song maybe YCBM Axl didn't finish the song and the band had to sing to finish it....
Then at another song Tommy threw down his bass and left the show....That happened cause he received a fucking piss bottle...

At these points you could hear mixed audience responses with some booing and bootles on stage...

As i was dissapointed Suddenly MAGIC Happened...Izzy came out...From this point onwards the concert was great. No sound problems, no booing, Axl in great mood singing the songs and generally awesome performance...
Izzy played for like 5-6 songs (Think about you,Patience,Nightrain,Used To Love Her, Paradise City)...Izzy looked very happy...
Sebastian bach did the usual my michelle too...
Not only the above they fucking played 5 new songs (Bettter,Blues,Madagascar,IRS,Chinese Democracy)

Izzy seemed to enjoy it and he even introduced Used to Love her...He was interacting not only with axl but with other bandmembers too ( like tommy)...He seemed to be part of the band , like he never left...At the end he saluted the crowd as part of the band...Even Axl chanted Izzy,Izzy,Izzy and the crowd followed chanting his name too.

The crowd and the group were very very happy and i really believe that it was the best show of the new GNR..A lot of variety,incidents and the longest Show/Setlist so far....+ fucking IZZY ...

I am prety sure this could be the best show of this summer tour...
