Title: Tommy: The Mats "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?"
Post by: snead hearn on June 13, 2006, 02:37:09 PM
I figured in between waiting for the updates from the Czech show, I thoguht I'd put my foot in and remind everyone about the Replacements comp out today. "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?-The Best of the Replacements" on Rhino.

If you think AFD is raw rock n' roll, listen to the first Mats album, "Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash". No hairspray, no tattoos, ten times the booze and twenty times the attitude. 6 years before AFD too.

And to think, little Tommy Stinson, 12 years old. In the liner notes, "In fact, Tommy's bass amplifier was taller than he was."

"Mats" is the nickname. As in "Placemats", what you would set on the dinner table.

Although I have almost all their records, I highly recommend this album to Gnr fans who want a quick overview of the Replacements. It is a very good compilation and you clearly see how the band changed over time. The first two songs are alright, but starting with track 3 through 18-almost all classics-then, 2 new songs. Any fan of Tommy's on this board should go buy it and support him. He deserves it-the Replacements deserve it. 8) The only thing you miss is the humorous side of the band-which is a lot like Gnr's humor (Used to Love Her, etc). Songs like If Only You Were Lonely, Waitress in the Sky, Gary's Got A Boner, etc are classics as well. Also, they brought the rock a lot more on their albums than this compilation shows. ps the liner notes give a good brief history of the band. If a Gnr fan wants to start with an original album, pick Tim or Pleased to Meet Me.

I feel this topic will probably be moved, but the Replacements were truly an awesome band. Talk about great music, raw energy and insane drunken antics. I'll probably pick up this set even though I own most of their records (except the late stuff which is really just Westerburg and his guitar) because of its hilarious title. Anyway, great band and Guns are truly lucky to have a great bass player and all around great rock n' roller in Tommy.

Mats were an awesome band, heard a rumor that Paul & Tommy have not ruled out a re-union tour. Possibly around November. Paul said the only thing stopping them both is the fear that they will fall back into old routine of drink and drugs. Paul has been clean for a long time now and said he was worried that him & Tommy being together on the road would be a disaster for his health.

I recommend all Mats albums, Westerberg solo records, Stinson side-projects and solo, and even Chris Mars/Slim Dunlap can hold there own solo.

One last funny haha and funny ironic thing:

I was just listening to the 7/4/91 Chicago, IL Replacements show (i.e. The Final show). Right before they play "Waitress In the Sky", there was some onstage banter between Tommy, Paul and the camera guy filming the show:

Tommy: "Hey, uh, Paul....Mr. Cameraman........"

Paul <to crowd>: "Wanna see my Axl Rose impression?"

(Crowd roars with laughter, band starts playing song).

 :hihi:

I didn't realize it was out this week. I'll have to go pick it up. I started to get into the Mats the past few months. Great band.  : ok:
