I can't really have an ultimate answer for that. The song is cool in a neo-Led Zeppelin way yet it doesn't sound amazing enough for me to listen to it over and over again.

To me it's a bit above 'aight' (I guess this is a yay).

A studio version would be interesting to hear though.

I dont think we need an update on the vote tally when the voting has just begun, and its still on the first page. If the total was 2-9 you wouldn't have bothered giving an update. : ok:

It's okay judging from the shitty bootlegs we have of it. A studio version will probly sound awesome.

I cant wait to see how you interpret some of these votes. Some of them are pregnant chads. Some of them aren't giving a clear answer. You should ask Jarmo or a mod about doing a real poll and letting it be in the GNR section for at least a few days. I would really like to know what all the active members think of the song, instead of just a small sampling like that last poll we did last year.

I do like the song, so it's a yes for me. However, I still haven't heard a particularly great version of the track yet, cleaned up Vegas is the best out there, right?

It sounds like there's a lot going on instrumentally, but it's too muffled to really hear it. That's why we all want to hear the studio version, since we haven't heard the song anywhere near properly yet.

The most Zeppelin-esque of the tracks so far. I don't think this song will make Chinese Democracy, although of course I can't say for sure. It's just not as good as the other new songs we've only heard live (exception Silkworms).

It's ok, but not the type of quality one would expect for an album that has this type of time and money pumped into it. They can do better.

Also.. I don't think Vegas is the best version.. i have this version.. and it starts off with this weird announcer voice.. I dont know. Way better solo than Vegas and the vocals are about the same

The file I have of "Rhiad" is rather poor quality. I guess it's the live Vegas version or whatever (starts out, "this is uh . . . a really interesting noise" . . . which I believe sums up my opinion of the actual song). I'm interested to see how a studio version of the song would sound, though. But as of right now, I'm not a very big fan of the song. I have a feeling, if it turns up on the CD, it will be my new least favorite GNR song (unless it's had a lot of changes through the years).

Oh, and btw, I heard "Silkworms" for the first time the other day. It was nowhere near as bad as everybody makes it out to be. I'd much rather listen to it than "Rhiad." I think, musically, "Silkworms" is a very interesting song. The lyrics are a bit juvenile, but juvenile lyrics can be fun. I think people would actually like a studio version of that song. Whereas "Silkworms" is a quite a listenable track, "Rhiad" usually gets on my nerves so much that I can't even finish listening to the song.

So, uh . . . I vote "nay."

Of course you would and even if they were you will still be wrong since you always said no one liked riyadh.
And the so so are really a yes since they dont hate the song. They can re do their vote to Yes or No if they want. Your claim is still totally wrong judging by the voting.? Right now its about 70% that people like riyadh. You are always so vocal that everyone hates riyadh, you should really learn that your name is not everyone.

Ever since I heard it back in 2001, it's been one of my favorite new GN'R songs. The studio version will be a monster, judging by the aggressive riffs and vocals.

Dont be so fucking condascending. ?Did I ever say my name is "everyone"? I doubt if I ever said no one liked Riyadh. Of course some people are going to like it. Hell, a certain amount of people think anything they do is good, and would even claim a fake as being one of the best GNR songs ever. That last poll we did was inconclusive. There was very mild interest, ?and of course most of the people that were willing to click on the thread were more likely to say yes. Plus, that poll got moved to dead horse pretty quick.

I dont think a real accurate poll can be done until the album is out and Riyadh is on it. Then, everyone will be giving a Cd review, and then we can see ALL the members opinions of the song. There is very little interest in this "poll", just like the last one, and that has something to do with no interest in this song.

39 votes isn't a true poll. More like a "straw poll". Dont worry dave. Like I said, when the album comes out we will get everyone's opinion on the song. Unless the disinterest in Riyadh is so high that people skip it in their album reviews. :hihi:

By the way, add one more to the no column. Godiva just mentioned she didn't like the song in your other Riyadh thread.

And yeah keep ?back tracking, only the ?people who vote yes will click on the thread. How many times do you have to be proven wrong to stop claiming no one likes this song?

Oh James, you bad boy! I said I will hold my tongue on that one till I hear a proper studio version

It's true though, so far the song had very little effect on me. But I will give it another chance if I hear it played live during this tour or if it happens to be on CD (and that one happens to come out in fall as Axl said).

How am I wrong? How is 30 people "most people"?  By the way, add one more to the no column. Dave, its only logical that people who like the song are more likely to click on the thread. It would be like that even if it were a different song. If this forum had a poll section that alot of members used, then maybe we could get some accurate poll results. When this tour started, there were only a few people who were hoping the song would be played. I still see no demand for it. If it was "most people", the crowd would be screaming for Riyadh at every show. Theyre not.

dave, are you also getting a sense of Deja Vu?

Deja vu that that most people vote yes in the poll? Why yes I am. Its too bad? you just cant admit that a lot of people like the song, its ok tho its you always proven wrong, so just keep digging that grave. You should really give it up, because you are wrong once again.

Title: Re: Do you like riyadh (yay or nay)
Post by: jameslofton29 on June 12, 2006, 12:42:28 PM
Dave, I never said every single person on the earth hates the song. Obviously, a few like it. Hell, with a major overhaul, I would like it too. I think the interest in the poll is just too small for either one of us to really be proven wrong. I'm glad you aren't involved in counting real votes. You'd announce the winner of the presidency after 40 votes were counted.

You take this way too seriously. That comment I made in your other riyadh thread that led to this poll was meant as a joke. I figured you would comment on the other things I said in that post, but instead you acted like the joke I made before my more serious comments was an insult. I was just remembering those old Riyadh debates we had.

If it was "most people", the crowd would be screaming for Riyadh at every show. Theyre not.

Based off that logic we could say that all the new songs are disliked by the majority of people because nobody chants for any of them.

God no - its exceptionally bad. But Silkworms is even worse.

Of all the newies, well...

Madagascar - Bad, just bad. All those samples and shit, whats the point.
IRS - Pretty ok
CITR - Be good if it wasnt GNR. (which technically, of course, it isnt). Elton is that you?
TWAT - Great (see I'm not all biased)
Better - Average at best.
Riyadh - Horrendously bad
Silkworms - Appallingly bad
Chinese Democracy - Bad - especially the opening 'riff'. Kurt Cobain we hardly knew thee.
The Blues - See Catcher in the Rye.
Oh my God - Bad.

Judging from those results, I wonder why I still get excited about this alleged album.

Maybe I should give up with 'Guns' - after Hammersmith I walked away with the feeling I had been cheated immensely.

As for new songs being played at gigs - all I can say is there was a lot of people going to the bar/toilet when any newies were played at Hammersmith. And the general consensus around me was 'What the fuck is this shit'. Sad but true people.

That is what people were saying when Nov Rain was first played live before UYI came  out, but we all know how that turned out. No one for any band is into new songs before the album is released because they dont know the new songs.

Riyadh and the Beduains will porobably be most remembered for being the most difficult GnR song to spell. To be fair, all the bootlegs so far have been very poor so its hard to judge but I don't like the vocals, apart the Immigrant Songesque screaming. So its a no from me. Down there with Silkworms and Oh My God.

Title: Re: Do you like riyadh (yay or nay)
Post by: gun on June 13, 2006, 12:49:22 PM
No.  It's fragments of thoughts put together as a whole that only succeeds in having the feeling of an unfinished idea being rushed and brought to the band for the sake of having something new to play live.  That's not to say it could not become a great song...it just isn't as it is.

Title: Re: Do you like riyadh (yay or nay)

Musically, it's killer - Lots of great ideas and cool sounding parts in there, especially the "swirling" intro.

Lyrically, however, it needs a lot of work - The words and the structure of the lyrics don't fit the music.

The song has a ton of potential though, so we'll see how it turns out if it shows up on any of the new albums.
