You can tell in 02 he was having problems with his monitor system. All of those players onstage, and pyro going off I'm sure it was hard to hear back there. Look at Rio in 01 at the start of YCBM for example. You can tell he couldn't hear a damn thing. Wearing headphones as a drummer is a wise decision in a big band like that.
