Hey Jarmo surely there can't be any GNR knowledge u don't know?! Axl will be asking you stuff soon!

I am a Manic Street Preachers fan.. recommend their albums Everything Must Go and This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours

They are big GNR fans.. I have a book of theirs which has an old photo of them.. their bassist Nicky has all pics over his wall.. and I noticed some sort of postcard sized Axl/Arnie YCBM/T2 pic/promo..

In their show NYE 99 at Millenium Stadium, Wales, their singer James Dean Bradfield broke a string on his guitar and while waiting pointed to himself and said "Axl Rose guys" and started doing the Axl-swaying thing he does.

lol.. why i went on about this I dont know.. i need to go to bed  :-\

I have a Linkin Park cover version of Sweet Child O' Mine. They don't know the words or guitar parts.

And you obviously can't rap to it, so Mike Shinoda (knobend rapper) ended it by saying 'That's enough of that shit'.

Interesting comment, Mike. Because thats one example of shit that is so damn good that you have not a hope of even coming near it.

Im sure this has been covered before, but I havent seen it in awhile...

I dont believe this site has a comprehensive list of GNR songs covered by others, so perhaps we can compile one here.

Feel free to include live versions (provided the audio is out there), and if its a bootleg, please post it.

Off the top of my head I can think of:

Asphalt Ballet - Crash Diet (Never sure what the deal what this track was; my guess is that it was written primarily by Wes Arkeen, with assistance from the Asphalt Ballet guys.  So technically, its probably more of a Asphalt Ballet song anyway and how Axl got into the mix, Im still unsure.  Anyone have more info?)

Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child O' Mine (The most high-profile of the GNR covers?)

L7 - Used To Love Him

Hole - Paradise City (A live "joke" cover thats actually not that bad, particularly when Melissa Auf Der Mar is singing)

Manic Street Preachers - Its So Easy

AFI - My Michelle (Pretty decent from what I remember)

The cover was a such ok, but nothing special. It misses the power that is in the song when GNR did it (will do it?). In general, Hoobastank just played it exactly like the original. I allways like it when a band makes an own version of a cover song.

Considering they only have one guitar player, I liked the arrangement with the bass playing Izzy's guitar melody and how they turned the theme solo into a riff. So, they did a couple of cool things with it.

The new band really should play this live. There's the three solo's and the outro... R, R & R would kick ass on it.

Nah, it's cool to see bands covering gn'r. It's not as worse as some other gn'r covers but watching the original band playing it, makes them look like twelve year old kids:

Funniest part of that is seeing Steven trip over his own drumkit, I bet the band made the decision about him shortly after this  :hihi:

Did anyone stop to think about that this might be another stab at Weiland on Hoobastanks part? Their new single "If I Were You" is a song about how much Hoobastanks lead singer thinks Weiland sucks. So I wonder if they covered GNR to further piss on Weiland?

This is exactly why I love this forum so much more than the 'my gnr' forum. Most people here were open minded enough to listen to the cover and at least respect it where as in the other forum everybody's on Axl's dick so much that they automatically wrote it off. I, myself, think it's a pretty good cover and I'm glad people here are open minded enough to really give it a shot before writing it off. I never really liked Hoobastank but a good cover is a good cover. This one is good and therefore it will get some play time on my play list. This is all my opinion, of course.......

Funny...that's exactly why I thought everyone was loving this cover here...because the blind love for GNR.  I figured everyone was hanging on the balls of this just because it's a GNR song in some way, shape or form....and to be honest I think that's why the majority of people here are digging it.

Believe me, i am not someone who hears a cover of gnr and automatically hates it because it's not axl singing etc. I am also not someone that hears a cover of gnr and automatically likes it just cause it is a gnr song.

That said, this is one of the most pathetic covers of gnr i've ever heard. their singer is what is wrong with mainstream rock and roll these days and for the past decade in general. i'm not sure i have ever heard as bland of a voice as this guys on this cover. wow. i am truly suprised so many people like this. this guy has nothing at all signature on his voices. sounds like any other joe shmoe local bar singer. terrible.

I'm sorry, but I thought that was a travesty!! Yes its nice to see people doing that cuz it "raises awareness" of Gn'R, but.... oh my fucking GOD did Hoobastank STINK at that!! The singer... he stripped the song of all its passion!! There was NO emotion in that guy's voice at fucking all!! Where the fuck are his balls!? Is he afraid to show emotion? If so then he should NOT be a singer!!

Watching the other video... the one where its actually Gn'R playing it... sent shivers down my spine and brought tears to my eyes! I've seen it before, but seeing it directly after watching Hoobastink BUTCHER it... it just made it all the better.

Might be easier to listen to than someone trying to imitate Axl, but there IS a way to sing in a different style and STILL make it sound good.

That Hoobastink singer just had no fucking emotion in his voice AT ALL!! At first, I thought he'd GET some emotion going, but.... nothing... not AT ALL!! ZILCH!

List artists who you've seen/heard cover a GN'R song.
List which song(s) they did.
Did you particularly like or dislike their rendition?

Sheryl Crow - SCOM (hated it)

Velvet Revolver- It's So Easy, Used To Love Her, Mr. Brownstown (very good)

VR with Cypress Hill - Paradise City (not bad)

Gilby Clarke - It's So Easy, KOHD (decent)

Bugsy - SCOM

Mad Cow Dizeaze 182 - My Michelle (hilarious)

Voodoo Glowskulls - Used To Love Her (HORRIBLE!)

Greyscale - Mr. Brownstone

Most Precious Blood - SCOM (bad)

there are a few GNR Tribute albums I've browsed through at record stores but never listened all the way through.
I know there is a Hardcore one (that has Most Precious Blood on it), an orchestral one, and i think an Industrial one called "Appetite For Deconstruction".
Can anyone comment on those?

Midwinter just posted their symphonic power metal cover of Sweet Child O' Mine on myspace a couple of days ago.

Mogwai covered Don't Cry.

Manic Street Preachers covered It's So Easy.

Why the hell can't I think of any that don't begin with M? :(

Seen the Manic Street Preachers play "its so easy" - it was ok. not great

Hole playing "paradise city" at big day out in Australia in 1999 (i think) - Courtney or melissa sarcastically introduced it as "our greatest hit". it was quite slow, which was weird - but Courtney's voice could cover the notes ?- easy. not nearly the amount energy you want to hear when its live though!

there's a very nast clubby remix of SCOM - no idea who its by - its really 90's house sound and its a fkn disgrace. Hope that no-one else has had the misfortune of hearing it. Think it was out in the late 90's.

oh and Jane's Addiction at big day out in Oz in 2003 - they walked onstage and perry said "you know where you are" in amongst his chats with the crowd and Dave Navarro immediately started playing the opening riff of WTTJ - the crowd BAYED for more. ?was a cool teaser.

I wish Hayseed Dixie would cover Gnr - their Ace of Spades is Genius!

The two newest covers I've heard are:

John5 (former Marilyn Manson/Rob Zombie guitarist) ''Welcome To The Jungle'' (The Devil Knows My Name) 2007
Midwinter (french heavy metal band with a 20 years old female singer) ''Sweet Child O' Mine'' (The Glassy Waters) 2007

I LOVED the John5 version, and Midwinter's version of scom has some good parts (the solo, the gutural ''where do we go'' voice) and some bad parts (the intro, the singer's voice, etc)

Thanks Jarmo.  I just checked and you can still purchase the EP from Amazon or iTunes, so unless someone can provide some proof to the contrary (conclusory forum posts do not count), doesn't look like GnR (or anyone) is holding up the sale of the CD.

How do you create publicity for your EP? You blame Axl for something. Instantly you get mentioned more than just by releasing your EP....

She did talk shit on Axl afterwards.  She bitched about the "miscommunication" and dedicated "OUT TA GET ME" to Axl Rose on stage(12-11-11).  Lucky she is still allowed to sell it digitally.  You copy and post this exact same thing on ParadiseCity after disappearing for how long?  It's like you can either make friends or stir up trouble..anyway I think you are a good person.  I'm sorry the CD costs $100 but if I ever find one I'll sell it to you for $50.

i posted there n here. what did u mean with :  "You copy and post this exact same thing on ParadiseCity after disappearing for how long?  It's like you can either make friends or stir up trouble..anyway I think you are a good person."

people who use here n there r exactly the same? note, in any moment i blame axl, i just want to know why he did that and what i think about this case is that probably axl didnt take a decision by himself, theres a lot of people around him, and sometimes it looks like this is a problem, too many people using his power. i am just a fan, didnt know about all this shit n got sad cause 2 of my idols dont like each other. im still a gunner forever, no matter how many incompetent people stay around axl, he is the god, these people, well, nevermind. nobody can judge me. i always defend axl in discussion about his delays or anything else, im his most loyal soldier, but i love lzzy too. i dont care what people think about it, just asked why it happened. if she used it with out consent or if she should pay for n didnt, just that. axl doesnt need her, she doesn?t need axl and the most important, i dont need a blessing from anyone that is not involved.

My point was that you were given hundreds of "likes" on Paradise City and people welcome you as a friend on there and here, and all these people post all this really cool stuff in the last month, photos/videos/stories from Vegas/etc and instead of acknowledging anything, you ignore them all and come up with "this".  It just make you seem like a grouch.

I hate to speculate but GN'R does not let just any band cover their songs and sell them.  "Appetite" is one of the greatest selling selling albums of all time.  Adding a song from "Appetite" to a pretty much "paint-by-the-numbers" pop rock bands record will help them much more than it will help GN'R.  That is why you don't see it happening more often, if at all.
