Here Today... Gone To Hell!

Hey all, long time lurker, new poster here.

I have noticed a lot of people on here say that the Illusions were no-where near the
strength of Appetite.

I am convinced though that if both Illusion albums were compressed into 1 great album, and the weaker songs and filler cut, that the album would be classified a true rock masterpeice rivalling some of the greatest rock albums in history. Even well over and above Appetite.? :nervous:

So my proposal is this, let's together make the 1 great Illusion album, throwing 12-13 songs into
a 75 minute CD, burning each copy from our own collections for our I-Pods, cars or whatever the fuck you
have got for peronal use?

Who is in?... It's your chance to stand up for your personal favourites. The true fans Illusion album. The one album that
would/could have topped Appetite For Destruction.

I'll list one song a day, everyone can rate it out of 10 and provide your thoughts on the song.
After all 30 songs are rated the top 12-13, maybe more make the final cut (75 mins),
then we'll go through song order!? : ok:

A couple of Journalists have made the claim that if Use Your Illusion had just been one CD, it would have been a musical masterpiece!

First off, I think that KOHD and LALD have no business on a cumulative Use Your Illiusions album or in the current live set.

I think this album would be about an hour long; roughly the same length as AFD.? I tried to cut off as much of the fat as I could, and I know there are even some hits missing (i.e. Don't Cry and Live And Let Die), but you know the saying about making an omelette.

I seriously believe there is no Use Your Illusion I without Coma. I seriously believe there is no Use Your Illusion 2 without Civil War.

I absolutely agree about LALD and KOHD - Boot em!

Secondly, why is everyone listing their " Dream Illusion Album " here? That is not what the original thread was trying to get from people

^^ That album flows so well.  It starts off strong, and ends even stronger.. I love it.  I don't think it's an AFD killer, but it's a great album none the less.

Bad Apples (6/10) is a fun little song... but ultimately it ends up on the cutting room floor if you're really trying to come up with an album better than AFD.

They are wrong. Illusions are masterpieces just the way they are. Ok perhaps there are 5 or 6 weaker songs on there, but there is certainly more than 1 CD of Appetite(and better) quality songs on there.

Yeah, UYI has aged badly. I arranged the album like vinyl or tape so that the lack of songs isn't so evident  ;D

I think that's the core group of decent tracks, IMO. Once you start adding others the album gets weaker. You could argue for replacing Dead Horse with another rocker, but I think this is as close to an AFD beater as I can muster. At least it would sound like the same band  :-X

I'm actually making a cd for a guy I work with who is in his early 40s, and was listening to other music when GNR hit the scene - so he never got into them.  I wont be putting on only Illusion tracks, I'll also be including Nightrain and Rocket Queen from AFD, and perhaps the acoustic version of You're Crazy from Lies - but the task of choosing Illusion songs to fill out the cd is going to be a vigorous one, because I feel every song on the Illusions has it's rightful place, and sits where it belongs.  (ok, My World was a mistake, but that's irrelevant.) 


(And Yeah, Get in the Ring is pretty cheesy, but it's got a killer blues vibe)

6 for Bad Apples. By any other band would have been a classic but GnR have many way better songs. Great solo and cool chorus though.

Incidentally I don't know why people always say AFD is way better than the Illusions. Take Illusions as just a straightforward rock album and you get

You Could Be Mine, Locomotive, Pretty Tied Up, 14 Years, Don't Damn Me and Bad Obsession would be good enough to make Appetite. Track for track that list is as consistent as AFD although it lacks the classic songs like PC and SCOM. But add in the epics Estranged, November Rain, Coma, Civil War and also the power ballad Don't Cry and these albums are clearly better than AFD.
I mean look at Bad Apples above. That's better than a couple of the weaker songs of Appetite and still wouldn't get close to a UYI best of.

It is.  Civil War makes a great opener or a great closer.. I doesn't feel right to me on the GH cd because of that either. >:(  It's just so powerful, and has an amazing opening and an amazing ending.

I'll continue this project for those that are interested.

Reminds me how well Guns mixed piano and guitars well before Evanescence became popular with teenyboppers.

When I first got my hands on the UYIs, 14 years was my favorite song by a long way.  I already had the YCBM single, and had heard Back off Bitch, KOHD and November Rain on a bootleg.

I would give 14 years an 8/10 as well.

9/10 for 14 Years. Another amazing solo, so melodic and rockin. Great sing along lyrics. Cool drum intro, reminds me of Moby Dick. I read somewhere that Axl said both he and Izzy had written different songs both called 14 Years, so they put them together to make one song. Seems a bit far-fetched though.

I'd give 14 Years an 8.5.  It's a really good song.

Only song I would drop from UYI would be My World and that's why you can't make one cd out of them imo  ;)

Some of the lists posted above did not include Bad Obsession - that's my fav underestimated song!  :(

2 main reasons why one UYI doesn't work: (1) too many long songs, you can't have NR, Estranged, Coma, Locomotive, Breakdown and Civil War on one album, but none of them can be cut! (2) Songs like 14 Years would have had to be cut.

Still, it's a cool track and one of my favourite Izzy songs. 8/10

14 Years - Not a big fan of it. I don't have anything in particular against it, it just never struck me as a great song, but I know I'm in the minority. A little too much of a "downer" for me, but I do like the mix of piano/guitars and Axl's chorus. 6/10.

The best idea though is just to keep the two albums and replace some of the filler songs like You Ain't The First with songs that got left off like Crash Diet

There are some faults with UYI, but I am basically happy with the tracklisting the way it is. There aren't really any songs I'd like cut. Don't see the point in a "fan's album." Tons and tons of great songs are buried in the vastness of the albums--Locomotive, So Fine, Pretty Tied Up, Dead Horse, Perfect Crime, etc.

What I would love to hear is a "Use Your Illusion...Naked" album. I'd love both albums remastered and remixed, with a rawer sound, less overdubs, and perhaps even Brain could redo Sorum's drumming.

In this order, this would have been the greatest GNR album. The rest (bad apples etc) could have could have been released as b sides or on a live album. Certain songs like, Shotgun Blues should never have been released imo

Now youve got me started...The UYI are over produced. The guitars sound like shit. Listen to the demo of Bad Ob with Izzy singing. Its great way better than the album version. Listen to the Demo of Dont Cry or Nov Rain, again shit hot and much better than the overproduced mess that the Illusions became.

So yes 1 album with 12 songs and a different sound for the record would have seen GNR release the greatest rock album ever and they would have "buried" Appetite, but they didnt, and it didnt and they became a joke. But now people have forgotten that from 91 onwards GNR were seen as uncool by many.

Right Next Door To Hell   5.5/10 - This song never done a thing for me.
Dust n' Bones   8/10 - One of the stronger songs, but not quite a classic.
Live And Let Die   5.5/10 - Never liked McCartneys version either.
Don't Cry (Orig)   8/10 - Just a very, very good ballad. Not a classic one.
Perfect Crime   7.5/10 - Average but passable. Would not make my 1 album cut though.
You Ain't The First   1/10 - Pure crap.
Bad Obsession   8/10 - Pretty good, catchy, different.
Back Off Bitch   7.5/10 - Pretty good, rocks along, but childish lyrics though.
Double Talkin' Jive   8.5/10 - Like this one, it rocks and a great solo.
November Rain   9/10 - Classic ballad, 3 great solos.
The Garden   7.5/10 - Solo the strongpoint. It kicks ass, rythmic and heavy. Rest weaker.
Garden Of Eden  6.5/10 - Never got what they were trying to do here.
Don't Damn Me   8/10 - Pretty good, but crank the last 30 seconds up. That is magnificent rock!!!!!
Bad Apples   8/10 - Magnificent solo.
Dead Horse   7/10 - Just a good song on great albums.
Coma   9/10 - The first 7 minutes is hard rock heaven!!! Heavy as all shit and the middle solo is brilliant. The song drags on at the end though.

Locomotive   8/10 - Does drag on a tad.
So Fine   7/10 - Not too bad, but very cheesy.
Estranged   9/10 - An epic ballad. Being picky but it takes a while to warm up this song.
You Could Be Mine   9.5/10 - Ahhh! Magnificent metal/hard rock at it's finest.
Don't Cry (Alt)   8/10 - Above average ballad. Not in November Rain or Estranged's class though.
My World   0.5/10 - Pure crap.

I think it would have worked best, 2 per day.

one from UYI1 and one from UYI2.  The final day could have the 2 left over UYI1 songs.

It's too hard to rate 30 songs all at once accurately.  You need time to listen to them and evaulate them.

I wouldn't leave out any of the songs in UYI except My World so 2 albums is a must :D

Wow I couldn't disagree more. Dead Horse a 7? are you kidding me? the same rating you gave So Fine. And I don't know if I'm in the minority here But I can't take any rating seriously when they say Coma drags on too long at the end and rates Bad Apples the same as Don't Damn Me. DDM and Coma are the best songs on UYI 1. If Coma drags then what does November Rain do(for the record I like NR just trying to make a point). 3 solos (not that I mind) but they are very similar. Lyrically Axl repeats alot of the same stuff and the matt sorum drum roll gets over used in it. Coma is amazing and the last 2mins are brilliant. Listen to it with headphones and the lights off and you can actually feel the pain in that song. Axl and Slash at their finest that song is GnR.

Lald and KOHD shouldnt be on any "Ultimate Illusions" CD, they are average at best. But Crash Diet complete would kick serious ass.

My album was very hard to come up with cuz of the 80 minute thing, I left off some of my favorite songs like Dead horse, Right Next Door To Hell, and Garden of Eden.

I dont understand the beef about Shotgun Blues. That song kicks so much ass its incredible.

I agree! I love the tempo of the song and it's aggressiveness. A few of the lyrics are a bit much, but in general I can't understand why more people don't like it (or even hate it).

First of all - leave off Civil War and KOHD since they were already released elsewhere.? Kill My World for obvious reasons and only put one version of Don't Cry.? ?I would also toss off You Ain't The First.?

Most of us also seem to agree that Bad Apples, Shotgun Blues and Back Off B*** are weaker tracks as well - B sides, if you will.

Now, we're down to a workable number - 22 songs (LOL).

The MUST HAVES I think we all agree on.

We realistically then would get 5 of the following:? Dust & Bones, 14 Years, Yesterdays, Right Next Door To Hell, Live and Let Die, Perfect Crime, Dead Horse, Don't Damn Me, The Garden & Bad Obsession.? So 5 have to go.....

I'd get rid of Live and Let Die in a second, as well as one of the Izzy songs (Dust & Bones).? I'd also lose one of RNDTH or PC - I vote for keeping RNTDH.? So Perfect Crime is gone.? The final 2 that miss the cut - and it's a tough call - are the Garden and Don't Damn Me.? ?Therefore, we will add Dead Horse, Right Next Door To Hell, Bad Obsession, Yesterdays & 14 Years.? So my final FANS album is? - with this tracklisting.....

That's a really good breakdown, but I think Don't Damn Me needs to be included just based on the guitar riff alone. It's such a great riff and has a lot of attitude, kinda like Nightrain in that respect. If that doesn't sell it, just remember the tag line at the end: "Smoke if you got 'em...alright...that sucked".
