I wouldn't too much stock in some of the rumors that are on here. This is my first night following along on the boards, I was at the first two shows, but reading back through the threads there was alot of mis-information being thrown around while the show going on that wasn't actually happening at the show. ?judging by what i saw the last two night...my guess is that Axl is just fine. ?: ok:

Okay...an expected fall release.  The points the same: the album wont be out for at least 5 months.  Theyre already playing 6 or so "new" songs (songs expected to be on the album), nobody should expect them to play any more.  Maybe theyll play another one or two right before its release, but they are wise to save them until then.

Considering IRS has been around 2 years and that Better was leaked a good 2 months before the shows... No.

Hell, I'd be happy if they played all the new songs we have as of now. Rhaid, The Blues, Maddy, Better, TWAT, CD, IRS, OMG, (maybe even Silkworms.) Mix that in with WTTJ, NR, PC, and two more old songs and you have a damn good setlist.

A point about the new songs, there are only 6 new songs that we have heard that will make the album, and this band wrote them I dont see why cant play them every show. They dont need to play songs like my michelle, or RQ or AFD songs like that. Even drop LALD but they should be playing teh songs they wrote together

they are obviously putting a dvd together to show case the new band and tie people over while we wait for the CD. So yeah the shows will be pretty identical to keep the flow of the dvd the same. They need all 4 shows to get the best shots of each song.

not to argue but we do not know what will be on the album. these might be throw aways or not the album versions. no one can say they knows. it may end up they are playing nothing as it is or will be on the album.

VR did play most of the Contraband album before its release (a pretty ballsy move considering nobody had even heard demos or prior live versions), but only a month or so before.  To play most of an album at least 5 months early just isnt realistic, especially when its Chinese Democracy, one of the most mysterious rock albums ever. 

A more valid suggestion is perhaps a new cover or two (has this current band played any new covers?), "Oh My God," and other less-played GNR songs.

What about the suprises of the concerts?

People are paying like $60+ to see these concerts. Ive actually been looking forward to the live shows more than the album because at least the shows have a date.

And how do we know these songs are Chinese Democracy ones? They are still shuffling the track listing. What if we have only heard like 3 songs from CD? Would we want more?

If all goes to plan without a snag...
I feel how well the planned shows go for Axl will be the best indicator of whether to be optimistic or not.

I thought Axl was very good and in fact nailed a lot of the songs.
A few minor blips but overall he was in the zone.
I think he really blows away Baz, but thats just my opinion.

One of your best posts ever,dave. I agree 100%. Its time to retire this AFD rehash. He has talked about burying that shit for years. I can see why he would play the major hits, but having your setlist revolve around almost 20 year old songs is absurd. The members of CD era GNR have spent years being loyal to Axl and working on this mythical album. Showcase that material instead of making them play a setlist which comprises 80% of the material that they had no involvement in. If he doesnt have the guts to play new material, and lots of it before the album is out, at least start adding more UYI and TSI material to the shows. If the setlist stays the same going into Euro tour, it needs to be renamed the AFD tour.

CD does not have the same mystery that surrounded it just a few years ago. Just play the fucking songs. He played a shitload of UYI before the albums came out, and it had no effect on record sales. The people who want the album will buy it regardless of how many boots are in circulation.

I disagree on that one. AFD is a mythic record and the more we hear of it the better. I think a lot of people are very happy to hear the AFD songs because I doubt that the majority of people on the forum for instance had a chance to see the band live ever, or at least pre-UYI.

That said, I love all the new songs, they're terrific. As far as UYI sales, they weren't affected  because you had to dig for bootlegs which was a lot more harder than just turning on your pc and download songs. You can't blame Axl for not playing songs that have not leaked yet. He'd be crazy to do so. 

I'm sure the guys would like to play more new songs but 6 is already a good amount. If you've noticed, when a band releases a new record they usually play about  5 new songs along with the older stuff (well, at least that how it used to be in the 90's). I remember a lot of people being annoyed at, let's say Metallica when they would play 8 or 9 new songs and drop classics that you really wanna hear. 

I agree on LALD, as well as KOHD, which are damn good songs, but I personally have had enough of these.  Anyone thinks there's some personal reasons for him to still play these songs, beside just liking the songs a lot?

All I can say is that if the Beatles were still together (and alive) and had been working on a now completed album for nearly a decade and a half, announced a tour and played A Hard Day's Night - people would be pissed.

No the Beatles just didn't tour because they were sick of the bullshit from the media and people being dumbasses and of inner problems in the band.  They also used the reason that their new songs were too complex to perform live.

I'm fine with GN'R playing old stuff as long as CD remains unreleased. Fine, no problem here. But, and I say "but", if they continue to make it the AFD tour after CD's release, then you're bound to end up playing a greatest hits show every night and eventually lose your mainstream, as well as potentially new, fan base.
But think about it, with people all over the world saying how this isn't Guns N' Roses with all the big changes regarding its line up, imagine if this "new" band got onstage this summer without a CD release and played a majority of new songs. Songs people have never heard and they sound like jibberish because you have no point of reference (imagine hearing Estranged or November Rain live for the first time without having heard it on an album first). Then, people would bitch and say "if we're supposed to accept that this is GN'R, how come they barely play any old stuff?"

i just got home. this show was better than friday night. tonight's show was nothing short of amazing. one of the best concert of my life.

axl's voice sounded incredible. he is in rare form right now. and the sound was slightly better than friday. at no point did i think his voice wasn't loud enough.

axl was talkative. the entire band was into it. great setlist. 

i was up front on the right. big mosh pit broke out a few times. but it was fun (despite the a few steroid freaks that were all roided up - those guys crack me the hell up).

No, its not fine. People who have stuck by Axl for all these years do not want to hear 85% old material. People want to hear CD. Hell, even people that arent fans have heard of Chinese Democracy. Start playing alot of songs from it, promote it, and even people that aren't fans will buy tickets out of curiousity.

I heard new songs in July 1991 before they were released. It was amazing. It was half(or more than half) new material, and there wasn't one person in the crowd that wasn't blown away.

I fully agree.  This isn't the AFD tour, its the CD tour, so they should be playing 7 songs that we are already aware, at the least, every show.  Those 7 songs being, Chinese Democracy, the Blues, Madagascar, Better, I.R.S., TWAT, and Catcher in the Rye.  After the album drops, then they should be playing the majority of it at the shows. 

Thats your opinion.  I was completely fine with Friday nights setlist and would rather not have Chinese Democracy spolied months in advance with performaces of songs were not familiar with.



Well thats a seperate issue.

The album will come out when it does and it would be foolish for Axl to blow his wad  and play these unheard songs live when theyre not that close to release.  After the album comes out, theyll have plenty of time to play the new songs.

Like Ive said, theyre already playing what could be half of the album.  So we are hearing the material, it just isnt as new as youd like it to be.  Theres also a 95% chance youll hear it before its release anyway.

fact is if they only played songs from cd that are done you might only get an hour tops for the gig,
think about newer bands with a past eg audioslave and vr, they toured with one album, but to extend the setlist they added in songs from the old band to fill in the gaps and give a longer show.

i for one think it is fine that axl plays some old stuff it fills time and give you a longer concert.

i mean from say a 21 song set you are getting 6 or seven new songs, almost a third of the gig is new material.

ive never attended a concert for a band with a multiple cd catalogue and heard them play only stuff from their newest or forth coming album, 6 songs is actually more than what you would typically hear at a concert under these conditions.

just be thankful GNR is back on stage and in the public eye.

Did you avoid the UYI tour before the release of the UYI albums because you didnt want things spoiled? During that time, people loved hearing that new music. I dont see why the logic has to be different this time, since apparently he has a trilogy of material to play around with. Its not a seperate issue. Whats the name of the tour? Is it the AFD with a couple UYI hits and a few leaks mixed in tour? If you arent offering a showcase of CD, dont call it a CD tour. It reeks of 2002.

Selling out small venues isnt a proper test for success of this tour. He should have done 4 nights at MSG and announced that setlist beforehand. ?Only forum members would have been at that those shows, and not even all the forum members would have fell for that. Also in foreign countries, the old band is what is being promoted. Of course people are going to buy tickets. They think AFD GNR is back. They are half right. AFD songs, but not AFD members.

i would prefer NOT to hear more of CD. i want to have something to look forward to when i buy the album. hearing new songs live isn't always that great - it can be hard to appreciate a song hearing it live for the first time.

i was disappointed i didn't hear rocket queen friday night. so hearing it last night was awesome. i am a long time fan. AFD is the greatest album ever made. so i want to hear several AFD songs.

axl is mixing in 6 "new" songs. that's plenty IMO.

Thats 6 songs that are safe bets for the album (I doubt hed include them as regulars if they werent on there)...assuming theres 12 or so tracks, thats half of the album. 


One difference is the internet - those new songs would spread on a scale unlike anything in the 90s.  Thats obviously not how he wants the new songs unveiled. 

We all want to hear new songs, but with six likely Chinese Democracy songs in regular rotation, Id rather hear the rest on the album.  As for people attending, who is really passing up GNR because theres too many classics in the setlist?  Thats what most casual fans, and many die-hards, want to see.  Id like to see a few more. 

The key is Axl actually releasing the album.  Assuming he does, itll about 5 or 6 months until hes playing those new songs.  No big deal.  If not, then the problems obviously bigger than the setlist.

UYI illusion tour didn't consist of only UYI songs, there were plenty of AFD songs played - like you said - at times it was half new material, half old..

Now, back then, the back catalogue was less than half of what it is now. So less other stuff to fit in - they were playing the best songs from AFD/Lies and new stuff.

Now, they have to play the best songs from AFD/Lies/UYI 1+2 and new songs, meaning less space for new stuff.

If you have been to see any band with an extensive back catalogue, you'll see them play 4/5 new songs, and the rest from the back catalogue.

Yeah good point about the internet. Those songs were available on $50 bootlegs, but they werent mainstream. I dont think those songs being played are guarantees. Go back to 2001-02. Was Riyadh a guarantee? Silkworms? if so, then we already have most of the album. Might as well play a couple more. :hihi:

Your argument about people wanting classic setlists is slightly flawed. Under normal circumstances and it being a different band, I would agree with you 100%. We only need to go back 4 years to dismantle your argument on that subject. Classic setlist, and it became apparent not very far into the tour that CD wasnt coming out "soon", and axl performed in half empty arenas. Without a release date in the near future, expect a repeat. Dont blame the 2002 fiasco on only bad promotion. This tour is being promoted even worse. If Europe is so inviting to the new band, then he needs to promote the new band. Stop using 20 year old pics to tell people you're on the way.

When I saw Metallica around the time they released St.Anger they played TWO songs (Frantic & St.Anger) from that album and the rest from the old ones, and the set was well over two hours. I'm just as anxious as anyone to hear all new stuff, but without an album out it wouldn't make sense to play 50 % new stuff...

What they should do though, is to change the setlist from time to time, and play some different "old" songs now and then...like "Civil War", "Estranged" or "Garden of Eden"... :) I'd like that!

Of course I dont expect to see it on TV every 20 minutes. I expect the new band to be promoted, and the members allowed to help promote it. I dont expect 20 year old pics to be used to promote a new GNR tour.

Appetite is one of the biggest selling, most imporatant rock albums of all time and will therefore always make up the majority of Guns 'n' Roses set, and i for one totally endorse those immortal songs making up two thirds of the show. Spaghetti Incident is utter shite and was only done to use up part of the Geffen recording contract, so that is rightfully buried in the past. Lies was cool but was a major cash-in job by Geffen to keep money rolling in while the band was at such a huge peak so i doubt you'll hear much more from that. It would be cool to hear more UYI stuff though especially if Izzy shows up.  : ok:

As for the CD stuff it's absurd that a few newbie fans here think they deserve to hear this stuff just b/c they downloaded a bunch of unfinished demos and decided they were the new authority on G'n'R. When the album comes out you'll hear plenty of that on the real tour that promotes it. Until then show some respect to the back catalogue, even though you may be too young to understand the significance of it.  :yes:

Greetings to you all from New York City. I know it's a cliche but it really is the city that never sleeps. I know I haven't! I have always wanted to see the place, and GNR was a great excuse to finally get here. I am so happy that I did. New York is alive, just a great vibe, and of course it ain't that often you get to stand 20 feet from Axl Rose for 2 hours! Twice!

Yup, I did go to both the Sunday and Monday night shows. I may post a full review later but suffice it to say, they were awesome. I guess I preferred Sunday's show slightly, but that was probably because it was the first one. Sunday night, "You Could Be Mine" was a fucking unbelievably good time. Pandemonium! Loved "Out ta Get Me", "Rocket Queen" and "My Michelle" was a blast, Axl looked so happy up there doing the song with Baz. The second night, "Nightrain", "November Rain" and "Paradise City" were the highlights.

Went to the pre-show planning to stay for about 20 minutes, stayed for 3 hours. Everyone there, super-cool.

No "There Was a? Time" either night, and not enough UYI stuff. Also for some odd reason hard to hear Axl or the guitars on "Better", there was a helluva lot of feedback during that song, or something. :rant: That's my little rant of the day.

I have to say one thing about Robin Finck. I have never bashed this guy, but I always considered him the 2nd guitarist, nowhere close to Buckethead. When the Bucket left, I just assumed that they would need to replace Bucket with a new guy. But what seems to have happened is, Robin is now the lead guitarist, and Bumblefoot has replaced him. And I will say this: Robin seemed so calm, so cool and in control, enjoying the show while playing some excellent guitar. I said to my friends afterwards and we all agreed, Robin is now the lead guitarist and I have no problem with that, he really did an excellent job and I hope he gets more respect around these parts because he really does deserve it.

Overall, these shows were fantastic, and I had a great time. Axl sounded great, seemed very happy and calm, and in a great mood both nights. GNFNR!

Also a couple of quick stories, forgive me if they have been told already but I don't have time to read the entire thread.

Sunday night, Axl was talking about 'Better' for a second, and he said something along the lines of "By the way, a little tidbit for you. 'Better' is a Robin song".

Then during Monday's show, he said "This next song, I wrote all the lyrics to it except for one line. Now I sang that line, I put my heart into it, but I didn't write it. Izzy wrote it. And you know what that one little line was that Izzy wrote? Out ta Get Me..." Now that's good stuff!

By the way, I saw a few people asking about Axl's voice earlier in the thread. It sounded fucking great, folks. Only problem was it was a little low in the mix. I actually thought they turned up the vox a bit about halfway through Monday's show, but I could be wrong. I have been rather skeptical lately about this record and the band because it has been delayed for so fucking long, but Axl just seems totally rejuvenated and cool right now. I am actually optimistic now that this thing will come out in the fall. Come on Axl do it! There are a lot of us out here who will buy every single thing you ever put out, and we really, really, REALLY need some new stuff...

i think this is kind of directed to the boards and how people on them are always trying to act like they know who wrote what parts and stuff.

Finck has definitely stepped up his game.... and I had the same reaction when I saw him Friday night. However, just a matter of time before the BEAST that is Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal takes over.

I never thought about Robin being the 2nd guitarist. Of course Buckethead grabbed some attention, but if you listen to some solos like SCOM, The Blues, Mr. Brownstone, etc, you would know he's the lead guitar ALSO. There's no need to label them as 2nd, 3rd guitarist or whatever. Everyone of them are capable to play lead and to shine on the stage. It's not a one man show like it was with Slash anymore.

Hi, I need everyone's help here.  This is my first post, I decided to join this forum after having gone to the Sunday night show.  I was the very first person in line (got there at 11:30PM the night before), so some people on the board may know me because they kept asking if I was from "Here Today Gone To Hell".  I was standing and talking with people from Providence (sorry, forgot your names LOL), Missouri, a guy from Maryland and some other dude.

I'd like to track down those people just to say hi, but I also need some help.  Is anyone going to Wednesday's show (the 17th)?  My dilemma is this.  I bought my shirt at the end of the show because I wanted to make sure I was dead center.  I ended up not buying the design I wanted.  I wanted to buy the design with the old and new GNR logos, with the hand written dates on the back, but they only had those left in Size XL.  I need one in either a Medium or Large.

Can anyone, ANYONE please buy me this shirt in either a size Medium or size Large and I will pay them back?  I can either meet you after the show, or I can pay for you to mail it to me?

even though the old material used to be played live with 2 guitarists, more often than not the studio version had 3-4 or even 5 or more guitar parts....plenty of stuff to play :P

What is laid down in the studio and live are two completely different animals, so guitar tab books mean nothing in the live stakes. The bottom line is i believe the NU Guns need two lead players because Finck isn't good enough on his own to do justice to the man known as Mr Slash. ?;D

No bottom line is the new songs were written with 3 guitarists in mind so they have 3 guitarists :P

from what i saw on friday, robin can easily handle any slash solo with no problems, and all while diving head first into the crowd

i went to the show last night, and while i thought it was a good show, i felt a little embarrassed when i heard robin and richard play christina aquileras "beautiful." there is no reason for them to play this at a gnr concert. dont get me wrong, i love and accept this new band just as much as the next person, but i thought that was horrendous!! there were also waaaaaaaaaay too many guitar solos (5 i believe) it killed the momentum of the show...the friday show(5/12) was unbelievable, a 10 imo, last nights was about an 8. ok im done, just wanted to say that i was a little disappointed n  hope they cut a few solos out for the next show!!

I do not know why people are missing this, and if someone pointed it out I apologize, but I was there last night and The Blues was played also, earlier in the show, somewhere in between Better and November Rain. It was definitly played...so new songs last night were Better, The Blues, Madagascar, IRS, and Chinese Democracy.

Hope someone will second this because they played The Blues for certain.

Last nights show was amazing.  I was right on the rail, centered on the 2nd Mezz.  Anyone who talks shit on Robin obviously wasn't there cause that guy is amazing.  I have so much more respect and admiration for him after these shows.  Everyone was so into the songs and it was special being in a venue that small to see Guns cause you know that'll never happen again.  Wait untill the full audio is ready for download and you'll agree as well. : ok:

and i agree about the crowd - i wasn't even at the other shows and i found the crowd was kind of lacking. a lot of people just standing around silent and motionless and it was annoying me (i felt like they should get out of my way if they weren't gonna enjoy it).

I was at the 15th show on the floor, 10ft os so off stage on the left side.? About 10ft to the left of that twat sign but back a few feet. I was happy with what they played and they also included some of the new stuff so that was great. I did not expect them to play all the new stuff out on the net. That would be stupid they need to be closer to CD coming out before they do that.? I think they had to play the AFD stuff because that is what the majority of there fans know. They had tp play them well. They had to show the world that the band that is playing is truly guns n roses not just axl. Which is what I think they did and did it well.

My take was this on the new songs they are great, I can not wait till the new album comes out. I know the songs from downloading them, butt everybody that was around me at the show obviously never did because they looked very puzzled when they were played. Maybe it was just the smacked asses that were around me.

I have been to other GnR shows back in the day when you can say axl was in his prime and I have to say. He showed me he is back 100%. I'm an old skool fan but I have to say the entire band impressed me. They won me over I no longer care about a reunion becuase what i saw on monday night was G n R.

Out of all the shows I have ever been to I would rank it as second on my list for overall experince.

Just got back to maryland, loved the show met some great people cant wait to go again. Wish my GF didnt go up front with me had front row but got scared for her and took her back 10 rows or so on the floor.

Great show.  The crowd energy left something to be desired, there were a few people around me on the floor who were really into it and some others that just stood around, although I think part of it was that a lot of people were smashed out of their minds  :hihi:

I saw a solid number of drunks stumbling off the floor "never to return" :hihi:

The band itself though was great.  Axl's voice was strong all night, and he sounded particularly great on IRS, hitting some unreal notes.  I was happy with the setlist, they played 5 of the newer songs, although I would've preferred to hear TWAT over Madagascar.  It was a lot of fun, great performance by the band, just wish the rest of the crowd was more energetic
