Title: Who met dickheads at the concert who couldn't keep their mouths shut
Post by: Guns N RockMusic on May 16, 2006, 08:38:04 PM
I had the unfortunate experience of being next to people with big mouths who had no idea about the current GN'R.? Last night I had a guy who kept asking me if the new songs were on the new CD (how dumb can you be) and kept yelling out "play the old stuff".? Sunday I had a guy who thought it cool to yell out "You suck" when Robin and Richard were doing a lil duet.? I promptly told him to shut the fuck up or I'd knock him out; he obliged to my request and didn't say another word.? Mike Giuliana and I had this discussion at Musthang Harry's about how common it would be for people to be clueless about the lineup.? I didn't think it was possible, I mean who would blow 70$ and be able to get these tickets (they sold out in 2 mins) without having any idea what Guns has been doing the past 10 years.? So, to all of you who were at the shows, how many people around you didn't know anything about the current GN'R and what were there reactions?

I had someone ask me who was in the band first, Izzy or Gilby on Friday night.  I uttered Izzy as I was in shock to be at a GNR concert and hearing a question like that.

hey dude great chatting, you're cool.... I always tried to say this online, but now you see it first hand... I think the further back you got on the floor the less people tend to know.. I heard slash chants here and there, who's that onstage, and shit of that nature... many missed some of the old members.. I just think when you continue a name you have to expect some uncertainty... Also the idea of inactivity for years didn't help either, plus all those izzy talks, and so on.. Either way now they now... I'm sure many people there haven't thought gnr in many years or followed it a smuch after things died down..

I didn't meet one person outside of the die-hard loop that knew who was in the band. The closest I heard was, "Is Buckethead in the band?"

Wow, so someone thinks Robin sucks and you threaten to bash his brains in.

Yeah.  That sounds reasonable

Robin was doing his solo before Sweet Child O Mine and some guy went "That's Slash's guitar" another guy was like dude that's Izzy and it wasn't it was Richard Fortus but that's a reasonable mistake

Some guy asked me where Finck was Friday night, and after I pointed him out, the guy was like "Thaaaaaaaaaats Finck?!, I thought that was John Frusciante(sp?) from the Red Hot Chili Peppers!"

He didn't make just one comment.  He continually was screaming "You suck, get off stage" and giggling as loud as he could.  After this went on 5 or 6 times, I confronted him.  he has no right to ruin the concert for people who want to be there and enjoy the show.

You know, I consider myself a die hard, and have been reading this board for a long time now - following all the rumors, the line up changes, the leaks, the pics, etc. ?When GnR hit the stage on Friday, *I* wasn't sure who I was looking at - Thal was an unknown to me, Finck was unrecognizable from the goth/circus-like GnR of 2002, and I wasn't initially sure who exaclty the new 3rd guitarist was. ?Plus, being 30ft from the stage and that close to Axl was a bit overwhelming. ?I'm certain I turned to someone beside me and said, "who is that? is that Finck?"

So was I one of the "dickheads," then? ?

I have to add, though - when Axl said something along the lines of - and this is far from a direct quote - "you might be wondering what we've been doing all this time?" - a guy to my right yelled out "Plastic Surgery!"

Now *that* was a dick thing to do, in my opinion.

That is funny.

I didnt recognise Finck in the photos at first though either, apart from his guitars. Even his manner has totally changed judging by the videos.

I think you miss the point of my post.  You know who Robin Fink is and that he's in the band.  Furthermore you weren't yelling "you suck" or "get off stage"  Not recognizing him because he's grown longer hair and a beard doesn't make you a dickhead or any less of a fan.  Had I not seen a pic of him a few months back, I'd have asked just as anyone else, where's Robin.

No, I get the point.? Didn't mean to sound defensive, either - perhaps I was just taking the "who had no clue who was in GnR" part too literally.? There were plenty of people around me saying stupid things the whole night, people who really didn't know anything had changed with GnR since the Illusion days.? I was just thinking that some of the things I was asking and saying out loud easily could have been taken in the same light as some of those others.? ?:peace:

And as annoyed as I occasionally was, I don't know that it's fair to hold it against the people who fell out of touch with GnR for a while.? Now the people who were smashed, rude, slamming into people, spilling their beer everywhere...*those* were the "fans" I could have done without on Friday.

The person that yelled "Plastic Surgery"  is probably not  a GNR fan but a hater. There are some sick bastards in this world that would take time out of their miserable lives  and pay $70   so that they can ridicule somebody.  I bet you most of these assholes are people who Axl screwed yrs ago  by cancelling  and thought it would be funny to get "revenge" by shouting stupid shit at his concert.  The good thing is that these people are in the minority at GNR shows  but can be heard if the crowd is quiet.  Good for you for threatening to kick his ass if he didn't shut up . We need to take it upon ourselves to kick the shit of these assholes when they start with their shit.  It would make them think twice before purchasing a GNR ticket again.

Just because they don't know who's in the band doesn't mean they're not fans.  If I didn't follow the internet I wouldn't know who was in the band either.  There are tons of people who are huge fans of the music, but don't follow every single thing going on in the band.. that doesn't make them any less fans of the music.. it makes them less fans of the band, but who cares?

They wanted to go, they paid their money, they went and most likely had a good time.  They have that right as much as you or I do, no matter if they know who Robin is or not.

Would have been awesome to hear that, but it's a little overdramatic to insult the band just because they won't cater to your specific request.

I love OIAM, but could you imagine the reaction from the press he'd get if he played that live in New York.  He's still dealing with negative reactions from that song when it was released 17 years ago.

Axl has made some mistakes in the past we all know that and I think its pretty reasonable for the old-school fans to want their favourite band GUNS N ROSES not the new-gnr.

On Friday night when I was really drunk, I was far up in Mezz1 by the doors at the bar when they came on... I seen the band and I was thought to myself "Where is finck, holy shit paul huge is back......" I thought Huge was on stage with long hair and a beard.. no clue it was Robin until I walked back up to the front and took a better look. Then I was like "ohh ok, so who is the new third" and was told bumblefoot by some other guy.

Also, I'd say 10-25% of all the people there really had no clue who was in the band.

I think it's reasonable to think that the majority of ticket and CD buyers are casual rock fans and HAVE NO IDEA what's happened with GNR in the last decade. I mean, if this is the largest GNR internet forum with about 6000 members and GNR could potentially play for a million people, well you get the idea.... is it okay to call people "dickheads" because they like GNR music but haven't followed the band's business? I don't think there's been any major official press releases coinciding with the tours that firmly dispell any possible beliefs that this is the same GNR people may have seen in the 80's or 90's. Maybe there should be a disclaimer on ticket buying sites like, "Slash and Duff and Izzy are not in the band...", that way you won't have to "knock any dickheads out"...

While calling them "dickheads" may be a bit extreme.. I do find it shocking that these people were able TO GET tickets for the show, by just being a casual fan.. Remember, this was a fairly small theater, and after the presale tix sold, I'm sure these were very hard tickets to get.. THEN I would figure after a 'casual fan' got tix to the show, I would think out of curiousity they would look up online to find out who the new band is, as most rock fans know they split up... I can understand alot of them thinking Buckethead was still in, and not recognizing Finck from his Goth/NIN look (Man that fucker does look ALOT like Frusciante..), but to think GnR would show up with the UYI band is pretty absurd. That's like going to a Cowboys game and expecting to see Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, and Emmit Smith.

I didn't encounter GNR bashing, I just encountered idiots in the crowd. One guy who was just banging into people on the floor during BFMV on friday night who quickly got pushed to the back. And another shmuck who decided to buy a beer and pop pills right next to me...

I mean how fucking stupid can you be?! You're at the first GNR show in 3 years, you want to pop pills?! Furthermore, chase them with alcohol? I'm not straight edge, but I'm not a moron either...I would never be that stupid. Kid had a death wish or something.

And then sunday night, when I was up in the Mezz, a pit started on the floor which included old men hitting each other, not understanding what a mosh pit was, taking it too seriously, and getting hurt and into fights. Needless to say, the pit lasted all of 10 minutes. Morons.

People, if you are going to Guns and Roses, and they actually show up and kick ass on stage like they just did, why would you want to miss a second of it by fighting, getting wasted, or high? Someone explain. Maybe I just love the music to much to not want to be left out of GNR performing at their peak.

I agree with you for the most part. Although some people find drinking a bit or maybe using some drugs responsibly to enhance the overall expierience, I think people who get tottaly wasted or tottaly high on a number of drugs really miss out on the show. I was actually upset at myself Friday night as I missed some songs to have to use the bathroom or go buy drinks, I took the boozing a bit too far. But, I was still under control, made sure I was there for all the new songs. : ok: But, the idiots fighting, moshing, or screaming dumb shit really need to go. Hopefully they've all learned now that this is how the new band is gonna be and won't come any more or if they do will at least respect the new guys.

Well yes, ive probably seen 150+ bands....I couldnt name half of em...On friday Im going to see Buckcherry, I know Josh Todd and Keith Nelson, thats it....I really dont care for the names for the drummer, I only pay attention to the bands i absolutly love (Gn'r, Crue, Manson ect.) ?Concerts are fun, for casual, hardcore fans and all, you dont have to worship the band to go to their show...70 bucks is pretty cheap for a gnr show also. A couple weeks ago I went to Avenged Sevenfold, I couldnt name you one member of the band, except maybe the singers...I went cause I didnt have anything else to do that Saturday...it was a good show, i'd go see em again, but im not gonna try learn their whole life stories...

Typical, New Yorker bullshit...good for you, if you call these people out most will shut up. They are for the most part all bark and no bite.

Most of those people got tix from scalpers, by the way.

Take it easy with the New York bashing, tough guy.  Talk about "all bark and no bite" - you dis 8 million people you don't know from the safety of your computer.  Look, all cities, including New York and your hometown, have theire share of assholes.  But the vast majority of us New Yorkers at the shows had a great time without antagonizing the band or other fans.

EVERYONE I met, talked to about the shows was just pyched to be there - and I met/talked to A LOT of people.  The funniest comment came from my friend actually:

About 4 songs into the show he turns to me while Axl is on the main part of the stage in the center, the part that sticks out a bit and says with total sincerity, "Who is that guy!??!?!"

Me and my other friend who was next to him look at each other and at the same time yell "Thats Axl you idiot!" hahah.

My confused friend was also at the 02 show.  I don't think not knowing EVERY new detail about the band is a prerequisite to getting a ticket - people LOVE GNR songs, thats all there is too it.  Not everyone spends every waking moment reading about GNR on the internet.

but i would be annoyed too if someone was next to me screaming negative comments and trying to antagonize the band or the crowd.  Its like going to a ball game with someone who doesn't care about either team but is just there to push buttons.

So were the people who didn't know the lineup &/or expecting to the Slash & the UYI guys, were they older fans (ie. Me, haha) thinking it was 1993, or younger fans who have WTTJ & SCOM on their Ipod?? or both.

The clueless guys fighting about Madagascar were about 25 years old, I would say.

1/2 of you wants to turn and answer for them
1/2 of you wants to ignore them

and if there was another 1/2 it'd want to turn around and slap them silly

That's assuming most people at the shows were from NYC to begin with.  Hell, most - if not all - of the people I talked to had traveled into the city for the show on the 12th.  The few New Yorkers I do remember talking to with very cool and accomodating to us tourists...
