Title: Better is a Robin song.
Post by: WhatIsItMan on May 16, 2006, 06:41:24 PM
I haven't seen any discussion on the fact that after Better was played for the first time, Axl said, "That's a Robin song. I'm sure I just pissed some of you the fuck off" (or something to that effect.)  So did the majority believe this was a Buckethead song?

Robin wrote most of the songs in the new gnr, he was there since 98.

On the forums when the track first leaked, everyone was going "oh man - I love the Buckethead solo at 2:32!" and stuff like that.

The fact is we have no idea who did what solo on the demos, and Robin got slack because people didn't think he contributed anything significant to the tracks.

I guess we were wrong.

Yeah, I don't understand why everybody's always down on robin, he may not be as fast as buckethead, but he can write and play some awesome shit.

There is definitely some Buckethead shredding on that demo. I'm not a fan of his lead playing but if he wrote that song then I hope he wrote plenty more. I think this might be the first thing any of us have to go on as far as his songwriting ability goes.

Seeing Robin play that main solo was incredible. My guess at this point is that it was him playing everything on the demo.

I'll admit, I was surprised to hear that...not becuase I really knew much about Finck's abilities before (I didn't), but given how he seemed not well-liked by many on the boards.  "Better" is an amazing tune, and - if nothing else - it solidifies this lineup at GnR, not "new GnR," etc., and makes me realize just how powerful this new lineup is.  That, and seeing them live this past week, of course - Robin was incredible, both in terms of playiing and stage presence.

I gotta say, and anyone who was there would know, during one part of the song Axl just goes NUTS, he is screaming his soul out it seems and really really getting into the song. that kind of stuff i just LOVE and it was one of the most intense moments at a show for me EVER!!!!!!

i definitely Respect and am more into Robin after seeing him a few times with GNR, especially this year!

I don?t think so

The shredding parts sound like Buckethead to me.. The slow final solo is definately Robin though

i think the shred solo are bucketheads'... cuz bucket fancy his little kill switch wich is used there. but robin may have comed up with the rest, its not like that solo makes the song good alone

Its obviously Buckethead who played those fast solos. But that doesnt mean he wrote the song. He just made up solos for the song. Axl was probably talking about the main riffs and the intro in the song, and then obviously his solo towards the end of the song.

It didn't seem like that to me when Axl said it on Friday night. But either way I think Axls whole point was that none of us no near as much as we think we do about whats going on in this band or who's playing what ya know?

I was there Sunday, and Bumblefoot played all the shredding solos. Robin played the intro and his solo after the wicked heavy part, obviously along with the riffs throughout the song.

P.S. Axl obviously wrote the lyrics, you dont have to worry about that. He said in 2002 that he did write most if not all the lyrics. But this is defiantly an Axl song for lyrics. As are the rest.

WOW. That's strange! I wonder why they would change who plays what from night to night. BBF looked really nervous on Friday night though so maybe thats why they had Robin play all the solos in Better that night.

The way Axl said it on Friday night really seemed to me that he was trying to say that it WAS Robin on the demo. But who knows for sure  :-\

to me it meant that he wrote the music to the song , kind of as a shot back to the people who are bashing him.

Personally, I think it was Robin who corrected us on Friday night...?

And knowing that he wrote the song makes it GnR again, rather than Axl + his band, you know?  From there on out, I was officially converted.  Slash who?

not having heard or seen the recent New york shows, i think what Axl meant was that Robin wrote the song. the solo's we heard from the leaks is up in the air as to who did what... but it was a strong indication that when we first heard it that Buckethead did the fast and robotic parts bec. that's his style. especially with the "killswitch" effect.

but hats off to robin for composing a killer song  : ok:

GREAT POINT! I never even thought about that side of it. Not just the solo work but the overall groove of the tune. It sounds exactly what GNR should sound like in 2006 and it came from one of the "new" guys.
