Apparently last night before playing Madagascar Axl said that "Madagascar" was actually written 14 years ago, during the UYI tours.

Is that true that he actually said that? if so what does it mean....he came up with the riff on the piano then? It was written lyrically? did Slash, Duff, Gilby, Dizzy, Matt have a hand in composing it?

i find it intriguing as to the direction that the band was taking during that time...was this song worked on during the time right before Slash quit? Like when izzy came back breifly/

i don't remember hearing axl say that last night, but maybe i missed it.

Maybe it was all written then. It's the tinkering that goes on to this day.

In another thread someone said that it was written during the uyi-era but that lyrics were written in '99

You're the type of fan that if Matt came back would be saying: "Oh I always loved Matt."
Same with the Slash haters on here. 
You can not deny the intrigual part that Slash, Duff, Matt, Steven, Izzy etc... played in Guns N' Roses and in Axl's success.
  I am sick of the Buckethead is better than Slash, or Brain is better than Matt. 
Where does all this animosity towards Slash and the ex's come from? 
Just because Slash left the band, doesn't mean you can't wish him well and be thankful for what he did to craft GNR.

  If Slash is the biggest asshole in the world, fine!  But Axl isn't so squeky clean either.

The song does fit with the Estranged, Coma and Locomotive style GNR seemed to be approaching back during the UYI days

I didn't hear him say it was written the UYI era.
He didn't really talk about the song.

He did some really good work, but he's still a joke.

I know her and its the true. She gave us the name on the gnronline board and got bashed for it, saying axl would never call a song madagascar. Then he played it some time later at RIR

No way it was written back then - Plus reports from the show are refuting that Axl even said this.
