Let's hope not. From what I've read about this guy, he prides his speed more than his creativity. I don't think playing a double or quadruple necked guitar is a skill which I want to see or hear. He needs only to write and play creative music, not write and play music as fast as he can.

besides, judging by what axl let us hear from the rehearsal (which still seems unreal that he did), the guy playing the solo could shread fast as fuck. i don't know richard fortus' playing too well to know if it could have been him, but it didn't sound like finck's style at all. hopefully axl has replaced buckethead with another shredder, i think a wall of sound driven by 3 guitars is perfect for the 2006 edition of guns n' roses. i can't fucking wait till friday! :drool: :beer:

That was my immediate thought when I heard the quicker player. It is the same sound as the stuff on his website.

Batio fuckin sucks , I sure hope it's not him.  I don't know what Axl's infatuation is with these shredding guitarist. GNR is a rock n' roll band, it just seems to go against everything that is GNR.  Axl always stressed in the past how GNR was not metal but rock n' roll  that it was blues oriented . If it is indeed batio that joined GNR it is going to be a huge blow towards the credibility of the band .  Axl would be better off visiting clubs  and searching for an unknown that can make a name for himself in this new band.  This band needs an unknown that we can grow to love . We need a young hungry kid  that is ready to take over the world   not some old untalented fart that prefers a circus act routine over writing great melodic riffs.

Even with bucket he could still play the more wailing emotional pieces, and he always had finck and fortus to even out the sound. that batio guy would totally take over wanting to be the centre of attention with his faster then light shit. hell, it almost sounded like malmsteen. you never know.

goin by what we heard in the eddie trunk show,whoever it is can play the parts in BETTER as good as bucket so there probebly wont be much messed with in the solos that bucket used to play.

Why do you insist on pretending your individual opinion is the gold standard?  Most people who attended or watched bootlegs from the 2002 shows agreed across the board that Buckethead was one of the best parts of the show.  People loved his solos on NR, Nightrain, YCBM.  You also need to accepr that Big B's parts are staying on the album, so if they play new songs they need someone capable of playing his parts.  And most people agree that Buckethead's parts on the new songs are some of the best parts

Dude its not self explanatory when he only cancelled some of the shows he has scheduled. He still has quite a few shows that are on the same days as guns shows in seperate countries. If he cancelled all his shows and not just some, then you might have something. But he hasnt, so you dont.

I see dates in June-August, 3 of which are guitar workships, another which is a festival. Very easy to back out.

There is a date on May 27 which is another clinic. May 25 in Moscow is the only questionable date. However,  GnR will be in europe in late may-june, meaning that Thal could fulfill some of  those obligations. We don't know if there will be more cancellations, but this is at least a very suspicious coincidence.

Vai has a very lucrative solo career and I find it hard to believe he would compromise his creative freedom to play songs that other people wrote. Besides, I believe he was approached by the GNR camp and turned them down but recommended that they give Ron Thal a listen.

As for the ex-WASP guitarist, if you listen to the audio from yesterday, it was Bach who brought up WASP in the first place and not Axl.

I listened to it twice and both times I could have swore Axl brought up wasp first and he brought them up a few times.

The first mention of WASP was made when Bach was reminiscing about the time he was in Axl's car and Axl cranked a WASP song.

Guys, the new guitarist you hear on the clip is not Michael Angelo Batio.

Some time ago, when these rumours about him joining were floating around, I emailed his manager, Deb, to find out what was going on. In my email, I asked whether he would be joining Guns N' Roses - and if he wasn't, then why he was so reluctant to shoot the rumour down on the Talking Metal podcast he was on. Here was her reply:

Hi Chris,
No there is no truth to this rumor.

When Michael got hit with the question at talkingmetal.com, he knew he was booked for the year worldwide and stated that.

However, as his agent, I know he realizes that I'm constantly working on major show possiblities and I don't bother him with "maybes" until they are solid. It's not that he meant to hint that it might be true, he was just concerned that "What if Deb is talking with GNR and just hasn't told me yet"? He was being cautious.

At least now I know why Buckethead won't be my friend on myspace! LOL!

I just can't see it being a huge name guitar hero.  If Axl wants the band to be taken seriously, he doesn't want some well-known player like Vai etc and especially not someone from an 80's band.  He wants GNR to be seen as a new cutting edge rock band.

Thal puts just as much shredding into his playing and by times sounds even more robotic then Buckethead, Thal is the king of weird sounds (they don?t call him the new Zappa for nothing). It?s really fascinating to notice how much these two players are alike, and they would be the first to admit it. But here you are respecting him and calling him amazing, where the other guy (the one who wears the mask and the bucket), gets it. You have more faces then an oven full of gingerbread men.

If its Ron Thal (wich it would be indeed the right choice to replace Buckethead), why would Axl be so mysterious about this? I mean, it's not like people would be shocked with this almost unknown guy. :P

Maybe because of the history he already shares with Ron, he did once give Ron a Buckethead-like treatment. Just because he was being open and honest to his own fans (like he always has been), while he wasn't even on gnr's payrole...

Hence my biggest questionmark in this being Thal.

You are right to be cautious. I'm not claiming it is based on the phone call, nevertheless you can't discount him because of the 'jet engine' or 'tsunami' that we heard on the radio.

Whilst I think that the guitarist doesn't need to be a huge name, he needs to have star quality, which is what an unknown or technical player may lack. This is the lead guitarist position for Guns N' Roses, after all.

Maybe he just wants everyone to judge him based on what they see/hear at the shows. Not just run and download everything we can find and judge him on that, ya know?

I couldn't agree more. Axl wasn't going to say the name on Friday, but he was keen to open the door when the solo to Nightrain kicked in.

Ron Thal is a great guy and a great talent. He is a shredder, ok, but he is different from the rest. He is a great entertainer and is really friendly.
He would be very popular among the GNR fans.  8)

I'd gain a hell of a lot of respect for Axl if he brought Thal in - I always thought his attack on Thal for trying to set the record straight with his fans was completely excessive and out of order.

Ron Thal is different. I don't especially want him in the band for his guitar playing, I will always prefer the Classic bluesy/Rock guitar players like the 2 RF, question of musical taste. But at least he is a great entertainer and a great guy. He plays with a lot of fun, even if his guitar playing is quite special (and dawn speed), at least he is fun.

tell me about it. his inconsistancy is mind-blowing. after spending year whining about buckethead because he was an "emotionless shredder" (any dumbfuck who listen to his solos can easily see the emotion in his playing), even after he left the group, he proceeds to embrace the person who is one of the most similar to bucket in terms of playing. now there's consistancy if i ever saw it.

I think it has to a complete guitar player who can shred. I don't buy into these 'axl needs a shredder'; in the end, they need someone who can write a classical guns type song and play the heavier stuff that Big B wrote.

I don't think this will be an unknown per se; maybe unknown to the mainstream fans, but dedicated rock fans should know who this guy is.

I think the point was to say that Slash is the gnr guitarist. There will never be a person who can be what Slash was, and in many ways, still is. Not many say he's the best, but his soul is a bigger part of gnr than any new guitarist can hope to be.

I'll second that. ?He can hold his own and play very well, but there are many guitarists that blow him away. ?Although Buckethead's playing has been said to lack the emotion of Slash's, it added some new life to GNR while he was there. ?A breath of fresh air, if you will. ?We need more fresh air than emotion right now in GNR. ?Let them grow as a band and we'll see what happens.

I agree. For a lot of fans GnR will only ever have one true lead axe man.. Slash. But I just hope this new guy fits in with the band and with Axl. I hope he can play the old songs and I hope he will want to and enjoy playing them. That's all that I want from the new guy. Slash is far from the best ever but he was the best for GnR.. Maybe this new guy will out shine Slash.. maybe not. Hopefully he brings skill and emotion to the band.

               Criaq has the pedigree and has a small album coming out which he produced , wrote and played on. It has a range of styles. If its Joshua Craiq I think Axl hit a HR here. This guy paired with Axl could do some major shit.

I would have never considered the guy, but I own the claypool DVD and if it's the guy i'm thinking of, he's certainly a capable player...definitely a bit of an oddball..

I've seen Kehoe a bunch of times with MIRV, Kehoe Nation, and with Les... He also played briefly with Ministry, and with Jerry Cantrell. Brain played with him in MIRV so he probably got him the audition. He's a good guitarist and songwriter, a great performer, but not really a shredder like Buckethead. He would definitely be an interesting addition to the band, but he would bring a totally different sound and vibe...

Yeah but Slash wrote those solos in the first place. It's much easier to play someone else's solo and put a twist on it,  than it is to write your own solo like Slash did, especially November Rain and Sweet Child.

Well most of the press are going to be saying negative stuff anyway, they always do. But there will be some people who will actually give a fair and just review of whats happening. If Baz and Izzy do jam with the band, then there will pobably be more good things said. At least then it would be like Izzy is giving his stamp of approval towards the band, kind of like saying "yeah this is still gnr".

As he says "a new guitarist" not "the third", and flat denys the re-re-re-crap(thanks god), I guess it's a new person.

Personally, I don't think we can make the determination of what the band needs since we don't know much about the depth of all new songs. Perhaps it is necessary to spread out the solos of the old and new songs amongst three players; who knows, but Axl seems to believe that three are needed. I loved the sound of Nightrain with three guitars blazing; in my opinion, the old songs were reinvigorated somewhat by the depth. Bu until I see how the work is distributed and who exactly is wrote what solo, I'll trust in his judgement.

I love the new band, I saw them in 2002, and i will see them again on the 17th. However, I will bring up a point that has been brought up in other threads, and that is that the new guys will get an amazing more amount of respect once an album they have contributed to is on shelves. People will see writing credits, and hear what they can do on songs that slash and duff and izzy didn't put their stamp on first. But that album has got to arrive for that to happen.

I think it'll be interesting now too, much more extreme. I mean, if this new guitar player is a well known, well respected person in music, that's one thing. But what if it's a small time guitar player; that adds a whole new dimension as well. If this person isn't well known, he's gotta come out swinging and prove himself to the fans. i totally agree.. there has to be a good reason why he is keeping this a secret... and its not like there is totaly silence.. axl went out of way to say there is a third guitarist... but it is a secret.. why would he do this?  it wouldn't make any sense if it was some unknown.. or even some underground phenom.. like bucket head was.. i think there are only two reasons he would do this.. 1) trying to create some excitment or a buzz for the shows.. which clearly he doesn't need to do since they sold out in 3 min.. and eddie trunk was about to blow bas for getting him on his show.. or 2) it really is someone that is well known and shock the hell out of everyone...    it wouldn't make any sense to hype some nobody.. the guy could be the next hendrix.. but.. it still wouldn't make sense to keep someone that no one knows a secret..

I don't think it could be kravits or navaro because kravits has already established his own sound i dont see him going on tour to be a hired hand unless of course he's already made contributions to the album we dont know about, but i dont think he has been. Now with Navaro i thought he came out publicly bashing Axl, or am i wrong??..but I do agree it will be someone some what known otherwise why be so secretive?

You kinda have to let go of the Slash Idea..it was hard for me too..but he's in Velvet Revolver Now, and Axl said it won't be a member from the past..VR is about to record the second album and he will stay with them whether than be a fill in for Axl, if you think about it either this 3rd guitarist has already recorded stuff for the album and has something invested into it or he's just gonna be a hired hand, and i doubt slash has done recording with em and i am pretty sure he ain't gonna wanna play any new stuff without being invested into it. These guys like Stinson, Finck, and Brain have been with Axl for awhile and have recorded with him so they something vested into it creatively, well i belive that anyway.  :smoking:

Nah, my guess is someone to fill in rhythm and a few solos.

It wont be Bucket or any other masked man. (I turned the gig down after being told I'd have to play silkworms live and have every word that ever came out of my mouth in public and in written form "approved" by axl and co. .. plus after looking at all the contracts , gag orders etc etc I woulda had to sign I realized I woulda suffered a serious wrist injury before ever hitting the stage , causing the band to cancel , axl woulda blamed me personally for my "erratic" behaviour and I woulda started a riot ... nah .. not for me. Hell the pay wasnt even that great .. one freaking adavnce promo copy of "democracy" which I needed to learn the songs anyways and some oversized sports jerseys that axl said he didnt need anymore but they did need washing ... moreover , I had to supply pittman with an ac adaptor for his yamaha keyboard , screw that)

Ok so close freind of my family was recently signed to universal records (backj in september with his band "Shaker". He was down in Hollywood and trhough studio sessions met Axl rose. Yeah I wondering about that too. I mean, it would have to take alot of air out of someone like Finck or Fortus IMO if some other dude just got a much bigger pop then either of them did.

They're professionals and will handle it well.  Richard will for sure anyway.  Back in the day, GNR brought out guests like Joe Perry, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, etc.  from time to time, so it is just continuing on that trend.  Personally, I will be surprised if Izzy plays more that one or two songs, or even shows up on stage at all.

I think the new guitarist will be someone only known by a few people, like Brian Kehoe (who has Cirque du Soliel experience like Robin, and a Les Claypool connection, like Brain and Bucket).  Or it will be a startling guitarist choice, someone no one is thinking of, like Zim Zum (formerly of Manson) or the Amott brother who quit Arch Enemy. 

Whoever the new guitarist is, I think he should come out dressed as Buckethead at first, just to F**K with people.

                I think its pretty natural that whoever Axl brings out will get a huge pop and Fortus and Finck will do with it. Because everyone loved the old Band and how it made history. The new band has to live up to the old Legacy.

I know, I know everyone is getting tired of the mystery guitarist talk. I took it upon myself to hunt down each and every possible suspect haha  Basically, I decided that the most suspicious character, was Daniel Brooks from the band Shaker. One guy said that he had a credible source that claimed it was Daniel and then a couple others checked out his band/myspace: I did the same. His band is very light, almost in the ambient field and he, well doesn't really fit the supposed GNR "look". A couple of the comments on his myspace were as follows: "How's life in NYC" (when he is from Canada). Supposedly one of his best friends who plays in another band, who wouldn't just say this since there is comments from him that go way back says, "congrats man

Now it's just my opinion but I think this guy would've just said no there's not and had no idea what I was talking about, instead he basically sent a quick interrogation e-mail. Call me crazy, but I am extremely suspicious. I sent him an e-mail back and answered all the questions without specifically mentioning GNR, so I wouldn't scare him off. Keep posted and hopefully, I'll have an update by the end of the day.

P.S.-I know some of you are going to say just wait until Friday  I was going to wait until Friday, but then I felt like I was onto something with this Daniel Brooks character, and if you still dont agree with trying to find out now, then simply don't read my posts.

Don't you think it has to be someone we've heard of if he's keeping it a 'secret'? ?He's not just not telling us by avoiding a press release - he's teasing us as he did on Eddie Trunk by saying "It's not someone from the past but I'm not telling you who it is".

I'm thinking it's a "name" guy like Dave Navarro or someone. ?If it was Dave Navarro or Kim Thayil or someone like that and he announced it - then that guy joining the band would overshadow the return of GNR, wouldn't it?

Axl has always been savvy with the "surprises". ?Think about this......

1) ?He carefully orchestrated the ticket sales to get the people on these boards to the shows.
2) ?Then when he saw that the password was leaked and about 500 tickets ended up on EBay - he cleverly added two shows BEFORE the other two. ?He wants us diehards to be at the FIRST show. ?OBVIOUSLY.
3) ?This pretty much guarantees him a GREAT crowd.
4) ?I think he knows that if he shows up at NYC with Izzy and Dave Navarro (or even Slash or Buckethead) that the media will go nuts reporting on GNR. ?Through those reports, they'll also talk about how great the show was.

This is the way to make a comeback. ?If the guitarist is Joe Schmo - then there could be a "letdown" factor.

Just dealing in facts though, the email response is intriguing. At best it is a non-denial denial but it could be interpreted as 'woah, how did you figure that out?'. Or he could be just fuckin' with us.

He said  they had a new guitarist and didn't say "a new lead guitarist". it can't be  richard or izzy.

it can be Dizzy (or any member who wasn't on guitar) but I doubt it. :P

This guy would be a great player for this band.

He did a show last friday, starting at 10:30pm, approximately an hour later Axl called in from rehearsal. Assuming that the whole band went to rehearsal, it probably isn't his gig in GnR.

I've been away for a few days.  How many has he canceled so far?

Actually didn't Ron say, himself, that he was audtioned to replace BH in 2004 but management denied it at the time :-\

I believe that he hasn't been ruled out b/c of his friendship with Beta's son and some very interesting messages on his myspace site. As for his quality as a guitarist, who knows.

Yes he did.

But again, as ChineseBlues pointed out, Ron Thal had a show last Friday during the same time that GnR were rehearsing. It is highly unlikely that he is the guy unless he wasn't present for the rehearsal.

I also think that if Fortus is doing a showcase solo like Nightrain, the new guy  is probably more of a rhythm replacement. If Thal were in Gnr, wouldn't you think he would be handed Nightrain to showcase his talents?

i really believe that if the guitarist were some obscure schmuck that only a few people know then Axl would not have a problem with coming out and saying who it is.

Its pretty easy to start a rumor on a GNR board (just ask half the tools on this board hehe  :hihi: ) and even easier to have your friends (or even yourself for that matter) leave "interesting comments" on your myspace board.

Its called self promotion, and this brooks dude has gotten more exposure b/c of a gnr rumor then he'll ever get in his entire life.  I give him credit for that, but I'm shocked at the # of people eating this shit up.

as for being friends with beta's son....this isn't an executive assistant job at some office, its lead guitar for one of the most well known bands in the world.

How come there's not one pic of the band all together to maybe see who's in it, or one pic with axl hanging with them so we can see who's in the band.. All those nyc always alone .. ?You'd think there would be one pic of axl with the guitar players

What time were those rehearsals taking place? Cuz the Show that Bumblefoot played started @ 9pm so if he opened I'm sure he coulda made it to rehearsals cuz the show he played @ was in Brooklyn :-\

Bumblefoot went on at 10:30pm. Axl called Trunk at approximately 11:30 and indicated that the rehearsal was almost finished, following a run through of Paradise City.

doubt its Bfoot but if it is Ill be extremely happy and excited. hes an excellent guitarist. He sent me his Anthology album a few yrs back and it kicks ass. Hes a very funny and creative guy who can play all styles.

As for Fernandos friend....her might very well be in the band but maybe he was awarded an opening slot to the shows and it hasnt been announced yet?
