Title: Sympathy For the Devil, the Rolling Stones and JL Godard Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on May 05, 2006, 04:24:44 PM In 1968, Jean Luc Godard (aka the best director ever) spent some time with the Rolling Stones while they were recording the song Sympathy For the Devil (aka, the best song ever).
at the same time, french student were on fire in the streets. The Beach under the pavement. And that made a BEAUTIFUL documentary, that was released then, and is re-released in 2 theaters in paris, because they are editing the DVD again. It is called Sympathy for the Devil ONE+ONE (http://www.commeaucinema.com/images/galerie/big/51120_3ecf208592db817c828ad3fc5aa22e3f.jpg) So you see the Stones recording the song. so real. godard is just walking around with the camera. you feel you're there. it is the opposite of what MTV would do for a "behind the music" or "backstage" stuff. black people ranting about Black Power and supremacy, about how they love white girls, and they wanna lick their skin, about how the revolution has begun. black people in a car cemetary (?) throwing AK47 at each other Black people reading black power books ( for 7 minutes ...) wierd comic book store where kids get porn books for free, in exchange, they have to get a revolutionary communist pamphlet, slap some Jesus christ impersonators, and do the nazi "heil". the rolling stones, again and again. you dont hear the final version of the song, but so many different ones, how it evolved. brillant. and OFTEN, you hear someone speakin some wierd dialogs, non sense, stories involving famous political characters having intercourse or being superheroes .... the movie is just amazing. it IS wierd, so dont get all crazy and disapointed, it's still godard, it's not cool. it's good. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063665/ Title: Re: Sympathy For the Devil, the Rolling Stones and JL Godard Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on May 07, 2006, 09:21:26 AM come you RS fans, you need to see that
anyway, after seeing the movie inthe theater, i bougth the DVD > amazing. really. cool stuff. there are 2 versions, the normal one, where the producers insisted to have the final complete version of the song at the end and the Godard version (one+one), where you dont hear the final version, cause he wanted to leave an "un-complete" feeling to the documentary. the 2 versions are on the same dvd anyway. ? ? ? ? it was supposed to be called 1+1 (or 1+1=1...can't remember)...the point being that while the revolution is taking place in France, the Stones are trying to compose this one song...but the fatalism of the film is that they never show RS finishing the film (is this true WAT-ever?), just like the revolution didn't really become all it could've... ? ? now, the reason why the title was changed and the RS are shown to finish the song (continuuing on with the rumour), was tha tGodard was away , and the producer of the flim (i htink it's some famous canadian guy now) thought it would sell/be more appealing to the public. ? ? fast forward to the premiere of the film where after the film is shown (is a cut that Godard didn't approve OR was aware of), Godard gets on stage, punches the producer in the face, and walks away. ? ? brilliant moment of cinefist, but i'm not too keen on Godard...although some of his films are quite appealing |
