What is a hot flash? And, is it true that guys can get hot flashes?

My mom has explained it to me like this:

You know how you feel when you get REALLY embarassed?  Red, hot face....

That feeling except all over your body.  And it doesn't go away for awhile.

FLUSH

Sweating attacks. These episodes can happen at any time, as often as several times an hour.

Each hot flush usually lasts for three to six minutes.

Exactly why flushes and sweats occur is not fully understood, but mostly it is because the automatic controls of the nervous system become erratic.

This triggers the skin blood vessels to open and signals the sweat glands to become active at any time. Usually, this would only happen if you were too hot and needed to lose heat.

So, basically, women are broken?

They say hot flashes here.  I thought only menopausal women got them?  ???

Yeah, they say hot flashes in my country too. That country being the united states of america.

The hormone changes menopausal women go through trigger them... but it's possible that a person can get them at other times.  Like I said, it's a hormonal thing...

It's a awful feeling having One,your face can get so hot it feels like it is on fire >:(

You mean there aren't drugs to fix that stuff?

There are hormones women can taken but some are too heavy and some women don't tolerate them well.

Also, a woman needs a hormonal evaluation at the hospital ( usually asked for by gynecologist) before any treatment is to be taken, to make sure the problem is hormonal and not something else ( some forms of illnesses have similar symptoms)

i always thought these things happend when you were old... but at 19 i def get them when im on my period! they are not pleasent at all... and the worst is when you get them while your sleeping!

got them when i was preggers.

My dad got hot flushes all his life and was almost epileptic. he had a flush every time before feeling weird/sick. The flush was a warning sign.

Generally, hot flashes are associated with menopause.  But pregnant women can get them too.  They are caused by hormones, so I don't think men can get them.  They might have a similar experience, but it would have a different cause (like anxiety) and then not called a hot flash. 

In America it is "hot flash."

So, quite simply, America get it wrong. Again.

We get a lot of things wrong, but if there is anything we are good at, it's hot flashes..........

I'm not saying anyone is wrong here, but the "hot flushes" vs "hot flashes" thing is making me think of this coworker  I have who always gets common phrases wrong. 

For example, she always says "I'm going to nip that in the butt"

Or instead of "I got up at the crack of dawn", she says "got up at the butt crack"  or "got up at the butt crack of dawn".

It sounds like she's obsessed with butts, doesn't it?  But there are others, those are just the two I could think of right away.  I've always wondered if I should correct her, but I kind of think its funnier to let her keep saying it.

Sterling, your post reminds me of a bouncer that denied a friend's fake ID a few years back... he combined two colloquial phrases and said "What do you think I was born on a turnip truck?"

Well, for anyone who doesn't know, he combined "fell off a turnip truck" with "born yesterday".   :hihi: :hihi:  Bouncers are funny.

If I remember correctly, they're usually associated with hormonal changes in women. I've never heard of men getting hot flashes. They may experience something similiar in regards to stress. Not sure.

I saw a commercial once here in the Western U.S. and it talked about guys getting hot flashes too. That's the only reason I was asking.

you sure it wasn't erectile dysfunction, because that's usually what happens to as dudes get as they get older... :hihi:

No, it's not that at all. I heard the words men and hot flash.

Yes, erectile dysfunction happens as we get older but I don't have to worry about that yet. It starts around the mid 20's and gets worse.

all of which reminds me of the classic Hendrix line (as told to me by my friend in High School):

I laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants.

It took me 20 min to explain to him that wasn't, exactly, the lyric.  Every time I tried I started laughing again.  Guy thought I'd lost touch.

I know Exactly what you mean I'm having them now and when you get Period pain and hot flushes together it's the crappiest feeling in the world

Hmm...all this time I've been saying hot flash, too!

I'm trying to get some sort of control over it, but it isn't easy. Yet, it works...... sometimes.
