Ivete Sangalo (brasilian singer), Rui Veloso (Best Portuguese singer), and DJ Vibe will not be playing the same night as Gn'R.
They are, just as Gn'R the only confirmed artists on the festival.
more will come.
the rumour is that names like Madonna and AC/DC will be joining the official bill.

Portuguese news tv station SIC Noticias is already reporting the Gn'R show.
they are one of the official sponsors of rock in rio in lisbon, and SIC Radical will broadcast the whole RIR festival.

more names will surface soon, but who cares!
AXL will be here, that's all that matters! i hope he does an european festivals tour, so i can see more gn'r shows!

They showed clips of RIR3 and a very well known portuguese musician talked about it too...

Maybe they'll show this on the news tonight too, for those who can get that channel...

High hopes ... just like 2001. Well I guess, that's as official as Rock am Ring in Germany 2001. So even IF it's official (what I don't doubt), please wait with your cheering  'til it really has happend (what I strongly doubt).

- why in Lisbon?
Roberto Medina, the Rock In Rio "owner", wanted to internationalize the festival. he will do it more often, and outside Rio de Janeiro.
He choose Portugal because of Euro 2004, that'll be played as you know in Portugal. The festival will take place in Lisboa, during 5 nights, one week before the European championship kick-off.
He expects that many of the footlball fans that will be here supporting their teams will come a weak early to be at the festival.

- this website is really the official website for Rock In Rio 4. "sapo" is a trademark that belongs to the biggest Portuguese phone company ,  Portugal Telecom, and one of the local sponsors of the show.

- Louren?o already emailed the website for the actual band members update, but the info they had was correct: the last gn'r song recorded was "oh my god" and those guys played in that song. but now it has the updated info.

- Jarmo, take those "????" at the news. this thing is more than confirmed, it's the most official news you can get since the 2002 tour cancelation.

Well, if the GnR performance is confirmed ill surely be there, its only 6 hours drive away. It will also be my second GnR concert, the last one being 12 years ago :o

Boston was full, so was Chicago, and so was Philly. I believe the Labatt Center show was as well. They averaged 8666 for the Us tour-16 shows. Not great obviously but they still are not a club band and are bigger than a theatre band. Once the album comes out I believe they will be more successful. Simple as that.

One thing that I don't get is that Axl can't play for over 20,000 people in Vancouver, yet could play at the even less than half empty  Tacoma Dome (Probably  thanks to the National News reporting about the Vancouver Riot and making people nervous to go) rather sub-par.

...wait a minute folks, someone better tell Axl, or this will end up like the European tour...you know, the one he had no idea about..anyone got his cell number...he'll need a couple of months just to get his head together for this one ;D

I'm happy for those who are totally excited by this news...get it where you  can.

I think that logic would indicate that the album will not only be out by May 30, 2003, but that it will have been out long enough for peopel to have absorbed it fully.  By that I mean that at least we should have a single, a video, a controversy of some kind and a few tv interviews with the band prior to this concert.  There would be just no reason to play the old setlist anymore, and they won't play all new songs to a crowd that hasn't had a chance to listen to the new material and develop an appreciation for it.

Disclaimer:  Of course this is logic and GNR has never followed logic.

I am optomistic about this.

Two days ago i saw an interview with Roberto Medina from a Portuguese channel, regarding Rock N Rio In Lisboa. Asked about some of the possible acts for the festival he was very carefull just saying that some big surprises were coming!!

I just wish Rock n Rio was well...in Rio! So i could see them one more time. God i cant believe it has been almost 3 years since their last gig here.

Well they already played all the "new" songs at the last rock in rio, so i think the promoters would not allow them to come back unless they promised something different.  How many bands play the same festival with the same songs?   ;D  As soon as gnronline puts something up (probably around the new year) i'll be even happier.  I know all the rio sites are official, but from experience, if it hits gnronline, its OFFICIAL.  Have fun over in Spain!

I got stung twice by ticketmaster over the 2 cancelled UK shows, bucketheads illness then work to be finished on CD (yeah right).
But I did get to see them at Leeds and Docklands and it was well worth the wait (And I've seen them before at Wembley Stadium and Milton Keynes bowl in the 90s).
I just hope if they do the show, they play some new stuff.

The 2001 tour I mentioned above was also cancelled... twice. :(

Chicago and Boston both had good turnouts. Philly sold out or was damn close (of course the they missed that show and killed the tour, but it was sold out) and added the 2nd night. Toronto had about 15K (I was there) and London sold out (small town/venue, so maybe 9-10K tops, but it was apparently the highest grossing show ever for that venue, or so the local news claimed).

Fuck Detroit, it's the home of Feminem, the Moby & Hand-puppet molesting little bitch.

If GNR didn't play shitty sites like Boise they'd do fine. Best bet:

Do RIR4. Do another festival or two. Do some other Euro dates solo. Germany, France, Spain... head back to London, do the Docklands again.

Then go back to North America, do 12 dates tops. New York, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, one other Canadian city where a riot hasn't been started (I guess that leaves London again, but it's a university town and is dead in the summer, or MAYBE try risking Montreal, heh, but the Quebecois can hold grudges like no others), etc.

Finish it off in South America.

That should be the first leg of a world tour IMO. Hit cities where you know the reception will be good. It'll be good publicity and build up interest again.

And someone make sure Axl knows where he's going. Tell him he won a free week's vacation in Portugal and ship his ass there in advance :P

That's about the dumbest thing I've ever read. MSG no big deal to sell out? Okay. A band coming back after being gone for ten years, with a completely different line up and with no new album to put a face or sound to the band coming back and selling out venues is no big deal? The reasons above are why the smaller venues didn't sell, but they were still able to sell out arenas, when most "big" bands are still playing theaters.

I guess lots of us have two questions:
- Do you know if that Lisbon date is part of a bigger tour?
- Will there be any US date before Lisbon?

Funny how something 7 months off is creating such a firestorm. I'm with the Punk, we ought get a warm-up gig or the album prior to this. Given the date of the show, I think it's safe to say most live GNR activity would likely be in Europe for the duration of the year.
As for UYI songs to add, I see "Don't Cry" and "Estranged." I can't see them going deeper into that part of the catalouge.

Billboard.com is also reporting the RiR gig in their Billboard Bits section.  When it's on Billboard, MTV tends to pick it up pretty quickly, so we may hear more about this in the mainstream press.
Billboard also broke the UYI release date in '91..all the other press said "According to Billboard..." in their stories.
Thanks to Myst and Billboard, my last doubts as to the veracity of this story have been pretty well dispelled at this point.

What selling out venues? They sold out MSG.... as Roboto said, Vanilla Ice... hell, ICP could probably sell out MSG. That is NOT a big deal by any means.

They sold out London cuz it's 10,000 people or so, Vancouver was NOT sold out (I don't know who said that, but radio announcers were saying 'Come get your tickets at the door'), and Toronto sold because that's the big Canadian date and everyone can haul ass to make it there.  Gn'R are not a huge draw in North America, at least until an album comes out.


Anyways, this is fuckin' cool news.  I guess they did hook up to rehearse UYI songs, and although this probably doesn't mean jack shit for the album release, it'll be cool to have Don't Cry, Civil War, or Estranged boots by the new guys.   : ok:

That being said about Don't Masturbate....this new band could really pull off songs like Coma, Estranged, Locomotive. The three guitars could handle all the guitar parts. If you remember, Slash played a rhythm part, Izzy played a rhythm part, and Slash overdubbed the lead in the studio versions. That is three guitar parts which would have been hard for the old band to pull off live. With three guitar players on stage now, it should not be a problem....assuming Axl can do the vocals. :-\ :-\

I'm not saying they will play all 30 UYI songs...but it certainly won't hurt if they would play 2 or 3 UYI tracks they never played live before.
I agree this is going to be a CD setlist. But again, I thought it would be the case last year so you never know...

-gauging gnr interest
-warming up in terms of tour
-giving the public one last chance to hear these songs played live at a great level
-showing the public the new era
and just having fun and getting out of the studio.they new they wouldnt be releasing the album soon so thats why we didnt get more cd songs.

next tour i think we will get some old songs sprincled in{but just the hits} but its gonna be chinese democracy set and maybe even a song here and there once every few months a song or 2 dfrom the upcoming albums

This is the first word of any live dates from the Axl Rose-led band since the plug was pulled on the band's disastrous Chinese Democracy tour last December with 13 dates remaining. That outing was marked by rioting in Vancouver and Philadelphia, when the band failed to take the stage.

Late last month, Geffen issued DVD editions of the 1998 home video "Welcome to the Videos" plus the separate 1992 releases "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II: World Tour -- 1992 in Tokyo."

I disagree completely.  I think the whole idea, especially if he made them learn UYI songs, is that Axl wants this band to be GUNS N' ROSES... he wants them to learn all the old songs that they might play.

Obviously IF Chinese Democracy got released the setlist would draw heavily from that... but the best way to go about it is to have a DIFFERENT setlist every night like the old band used to do.   So they might play Brownstone one show, Don't Cry another.  If they don't do that their next tour will be very uninteresting IMO.

If GN'R could put together setlists like DMB does... that would be fuckin' awesome... I don't just want "Chinese Democracy performed live with a few other hits"... I want a suprise at the shows.

I'm as desperate a GNR fan as anyone, but this news doesn't do much for me. First of all, it's a loooong time away. Also it's just one show. And most of all, as many have pointed out, Axl could easily scratch it. I'll get excited when an album release date is given or more tour dates pop up. Meantime, I don't wanna set meself up for another ho-hum letdown.

Another point that people tend to overlook in the rush to rip the 2002 tour-if Axl has lost his fanbase and nobody cares, why are they being allowed to headline??????? I guarantee you they are being paid a nice chunk of change to play. Even after losing a portion of his fanbase, Axl still pulls considerable weight in the industry. Half a gnr crowd is still bigger than 90% of the bands in the world.

this does a lot for me, i wont see the concert i live in canada. But any gnr concert is good news and u can look forward too an album but hell if there isnt surley theyll play some different songs and do awsome jams like last rio. And could lead too smaller gigs too warm up. its all good, any action is good.

It's the same band but the show isn't part of the 2002 North American tour. Last time I checked, RIR4 is in 2004 and it's in Portugal, Europe.

Well, it makes little sense to do this concert unless there's going to be a release of CD between now and then, but then again GNR doesn't always make sense, so I guess we really can't lean on that one.

I don't mean it will be boring... if the CD comes out and the songs kick ass, obviously i'll enjoy seeing the band play them.  It just wouldn't be nearly as exciting for me if I knew ahead of time... I hate when bands have a setlist that they follow for a whole tour (Oasis does this and it SUCKS!)

That's the thing... I hope that Axl is thinking more along the lines of "once we're touring on the 2nd album, that's when the setlist will be totally unpredictable because they we'll have 6 albums to play..."

This is the best piece of news we've had since the U.S. tour was announced over a year ago. And the reason Axl cut that tour short was because of disagreements with Clear Channel and possibly some other things going wrong. He's not just gonna blow off this date. I think it sets GN'R fans aside from other music lovers when we hear about one concert by our band and it's the biggest news all year.  I'm really happy to hear this news, but it has little to do with the actual tour.  Basically, every time Axl plays a show, it brings with it the possibility that he's going to be playing it to promote Chinese Democracy.

Now, let's look at the evidence.  One of the band members (forget which...I think it was Tommy) said a while back that they would hopefully get it out early next year.  Usually, I don't put too much faith in such remarks, but now with this news, I'm thinking the album might ACTUALLY be released early next year.  I don't know if Axl would really have much interest in having his first show in a year and a half be yet another collection of Appetite oldies.  The fact that this date is so far away gives plenty of time for promotion of the album, other dates to come up, and so on.  Who knows...they might release the album before the show so that they can play a whole bunch of the tracks at Lisbon.  I mean, there's not that much point in playing mostly new tracks if nobody has the album.  When I hear a band play new songs, I like them to be sort of familiar.

A performance at a major festival such as this would certainly help Axl get back on track, but given Axl's track record, I wouldn't bank on this happening, even if it is confirmed.  I'll believe it when they're onstage and playing.

It's just not a huge accomplishment to sell out MSG is all... they only sold half the seats for most of the places they played.  You're right... not many bands CAN do that, but GN'R used to sell out stadiums (I know, no new album, new lineup, etc., etc.)... The 2002 tour was failure tho.

Great news! I was going to Portugal to watch England in Euro 2004 in June 04, guess I'll have to visit a bit earlier!

I expect that this will be the first of a few concerts announced in Europe. Play Portugal, UK and a couple more. I'd guess that the album will be out in early 2004 so they can get the album promotion work out of the way, release some singles before heading out on tour again.

Besides, didnt Tommy say they were going on tour in the summer in a recent interview?

All I want is an album... Hopefully this means that we'll see an album before May...

It says that GN'R are the first confirmed band for RIR Lisboa (and they manage to mispell Axl) and that they expect about 500 thousand people during the festival.

FYI, I've contacted In-Demand (one of the, if not the, largest provider of PPV content on cable in the States) to say that I would be quite interested in seeing Rock in Rio in Lisbon on PPV live (or tape delayed if they need to due to time differences).  Anyone else who has In-Demand PPV via thier cable system may want to do the same thing...it certainly couldn't hurt our chances.

That's not negative that's right fucking on. It's gutsy to book this band, they really don't have the best track record. I know there will probably be someone who'll sponsor a tour tour, but to be honest, I don't know why. Even though I think CC tried some sneaky shit, but for a band that is so closely associated with riots, and fans thinking its an excuse to do so, if I was a GM of a venue I sure as hell would think twice before letting them play in my arena. But perhaps this will get people to pay attention to see what the blow up will be, and they might see, or get reports of a great show. :smoking:

The show will be broadcasted on portuguese tv SIC Radical (a part of the SIC TV network) which has an agreement or some sort of deal with Globo. It has had this deal for lots of years so Globo might get the exclusive in Brazil

whoever is lucky enough to tape this and put a bunch of copies on ebay will probably be able to pay for their entire vacation

I haven't posted in a couple of months, and its great to be back on HTGTH from Sydney, Australia on my college abroad program.

I must say when it comes to this news that Im excited but reserved. I don't think Axl will back off from this gig, but we need to start hearing about more booked gigs and an album/single release between now and then or else it goes to shit and means absolutely nothing, as his past gigs are worth personally to me. I was glad he bailed out on the last tour - there's no reason to waste anytime with the new GNR if they're not gonna play the new songs. I only wished he hadn't done it the way he did it in Philly. I also get the sense that this RIO show like the last, Axl was "forced/pressed" to do the show.

Nonetheless, its a damn fuckin' miracle that GNR still exists in the way that it does and that they can still headline big concerts like RIO.

More dates are apparently in the pipeline, but it is unlikely that there will be any more announcements before Xmas (although it is not impossible)

Also, gnr have no control over their website at the moment, so unless Geffen update it, there will be no updates on it for a while

OK, I don't entirely disagree with you, but I would like to clarify some things:

1) Look at the TOTAL number of shows GnR has done (both old and new) and looks at the TOTAL number of no shows and "riots".  To be fair, what's that number turn out to be...about 1% to 2% of their shows? (And you can't count the ENTIRE aborted last leg of the '02 tour...since CC cancelled that. You can only count Vancouver and Philly).

2) Honestly, the venue's might be nervous BUT they wouldn't refuse to book the show. They recognize the revenue a GnR show brings in. What they would PROBABLY do is require either the band or the promoter to do 2 things. 1) Take out an additional rider to cover lost revenue in the event of some sort of riot and 2) Require the band to take out either additional insurance that would supercede the venues.  The venues insurance company COULD refuse to cover the event and, in that case, again, they could hold the show and require that the band provide their OWN insurance policy to cover the venue.

Let us hope there are no sporting events on May 30th that may get Axl's attention.

That leads to the question: Why don't they create a temporary site on their own, till they get gnronline.com back? Every geek-kid can create a site in a minute. It even doesn't need to look good (although that would be a bonus), because it would just have to be the temporary information base for the fans. Besides, Robin's page looks good - so the problem can't be the lack of technical skill.

I have mixed feelings about this. First of all and most importantly, GNR is still together - despite last months rumors and shit - this is a very valuable information ( I was starting to believe everybody in the band was quitting quietly- Robin Fink back with NIN, Buckethead album release, Dizzy playing solo in LA, Brain back and forth with Les and Buckethead...) It is fucking great having GNR on tour again ( or at least playing one gig), Axl will get out of his cave for a while and have some exposure. I will definitely go (I live next door) and enjoy the show like I did the other three GNR shows I've been into.

However, everytime there's a GNR related press release, it seems the waiting is almost over ( to be later disappointed). We've been through this before. Vegas ( twice), Rock in Rio 2001, VMA's, chaotic World Tour 2002 and the list goes on. Every single time a tour is announced we get our hopes up but in the long run, nothing happens ( as far as the new album is concerned)

Quite franky, I'm not gonna get way to exited about anything else until the album is finally out ( or to its default, there's an official announcement on the release date). GNR shows are very special, but even GNR needs to recicle. There's no point in doing shows if you don't have new songs to test live. Not even the Stones do that ( and they haven't release a decent album in almost 20 years!)

In conclussion, it is great that GNR will headline Rock in Rio. I'll go to the show,  but I won't get my hopes up until I see the album.... : ok:

- Cool, PLEASE let's have some US dates in 2004...I have the feeling that now since I live in the US they will tour Europe and when I'll get back there they will tour the US... :-X

- Fair enough, but one could wonder why a band would have no control over its own official website, and why as someone suggested it, they don't create their own proper website (because nothing is set in stone yet...? hmmm)

Yeah but Multishow is a Globo Cable channel. The only show broadcasted by Globo TV in RIR3 was GN'R, and that's because it was here, in Brasil. All the other shows was just showed in samples and small edited VT's.

Well, that story came from one of the main sponsors and it was probably better way of dropping the bomb... GN'R are associated with the Rock in Rio festival, and this was a really well kept secret...

I think you're correct in saying that GNR is associated with the festival but I don't think it was ever a secret.

I believe that GNR's participation in this - as well as the previous two - Rio Festivals has more to do with their involvement with the Childreach Plan charity then it does with the "start of Chinese Democracy".  I think the only Rio festival that GNR was not in was the first one which took place in 1985 which, of course, was before the group existed.

IMO the Chinese Democracy album and the Rio Festival have no connection with one another other than we may get to hear more songs that might be on the album if they fit into the setlist.

A new product? Could Axl have changed the title of the next album? I wouldn't be surprised if they would do so because that title Chinese Democracy start to be old now. With all the new songs written in the last few years, this could give Axl the inspiration to change the title.

Mysteron is either Tommy's webmaster or someone very close to Tommy's webmaster.  He'll deny everything if you ask him, but it's a pretty good bet that's his connection.

How do you know?

i don't know for sure.  dark and a few others are pretty possitive about it and when i looked at the situation it maked sense.  he gets a lot of info on tommy, like around when his mini tour was on, and that sort of thing.  he does seem to have some sort of inside edge, you can tell by the way he says things.  he never comes out and committees to anything, but his generalizations are always right on.  most recently, he was the first to say the GH cd would be cancelled and within 24 hours it was.  believe it or not, really doesn't matter to me, i know how gnr fans are and for the most part they don't trust anybody and are full of theories of people being out to get them.  i'll place good money on a bet he's tommy's webmaster though.

Jesus Christ! I made one single skeptical comment about Mysteron and suddenly I get many replies.. It was not my intention to create any controversy as I stated on my first post in this thread. I'm skeptical and I will remain skeptical. Don't blame this one me. It was not just me who continued this discussion...i made one comment and many others replied to it. I then defended my opinion replying to everybody who jumped on me because i didn't believe in Mysteron.

isn't this topic about gnr playing Rock in Rio?why the hell is everyone trying to figure out who mysteron is?

I do like what mysteron says. I wonder if RiR4 will be the triumphant return or perhaps one of a series of shows. I would guess that GnR needs to demonstrate that they can headline without any problems so perhaps this is the momentum builder like Rio 3 was. anywhich way, i hope the US arenas fall in line and allow GnR to come back; it seems like Axl always runs into trouble in North America.

what make me sad is that Rock In Rio is 8 months away from us...
maybe the release date of CD is APRIL and they thou "well, if we will release this shit in april, lets play in RIR then..."
and they could be in total silence till then...  :P

IF the new album is released in Feb-Apr, AND RIR4 is the kickoff of a larger Euro tour, I'd imagine we won't see the band stateside till the fall again (which will probably be enough time to find some promoter to take up a US tour) :-\. All conjecture,but that's all we gots to go on.

Hey, there's a story about a Rock In Nordeste (Northeast) here, in Recife-PE, Brasil. I'm not sure if it will be as big as the Lisbon will be and another editions were, but here's a little hope, hehehe... It's just a rumour yet, but the thing would be released in May too...  : ok:

When the plug was pulled on the last tour, i wouldn't have been surprised if nothing happened for years, and axl issued nothing but a brief statement that he's quitting the music business after the years had passed.

This 7 month wait may seem long for some, but it gives him time to get his shit together.

Fuck, what other "professional" artist at the biggest show of their tour (and the last, as it turned out) would be as brutally honest to say "I've managed to get enough of myself together to be with you here tonight"?

I can understand the dude's frustration. I see both sides of it, and I take both sides of the issue depending on how my personalities are lined up that day. The fact is, this album has been a major cocktease, as someone so beautifully put it last night, for a damn long time. From '91 (I'm going by UYI and not TSI) to about summer '99, when it was just waiting emptily for something that may or may not happen, it was okay. But when OMG came out in fall 1999, and the live shows started in '01, and for it to now be almost '04 with neither an album or an explanation, it can drive you nuts if you've been following all along. Once again, though, the best bet is Jarmo's approach: Expect nothing and if you get something, try to enjoy it.

Rock in Rio IV is offically up and Gn'R are headling day 2.

That's cool to hear but do you think they will play something new or say something about the album if nothing is said until then. This is a whole half year away. Do you think we will be silenced by Gn'R with no news from Axl or the record label? I mean it's been almost a year since we've gotten any real news from Axl Rose. Nothing has happened.

Does anyone think that a single will be released or a show before the Rio date will happen I mean we're talking May man... I think that if the album is not released by Summer of 04 no one will not even care.... too much time is bad, I don't care who you are.

I hope they mix up the set list and stuff at Rio or the next show. That would be cool. Some new material would be tight too.

Does anyone know who else is playing at RIR 4.  I've only heard Gn'R and I think Madona so far, is anyone else confirmed?  The only band I need is Guns, but I'm tryin to talk some friends into coming who aren't as big of Gn'r fans as I am.

P.S. Some advise about easiest way to get tickets would be very helpful.

well, all their music is in portuguese, so i really doubt they'll get new fans.its really tough to break the language barrier

they also opened for the rolling stones 2 months ago here in portugal.
they'll probably play on the same day, same stage, but not before gn'r. just like carlinhos brown in rio 3 - he played at 5 o'clock, then it was papa roach, oasis and Guns N'Fuckin'Roses!!
