Title: how are they promoting the shows in your country (what footage)
Post by: mikegiuliana on March 25, 2006, 08:38:22 AM
I took this idea from what war rose told me in another thread where he mentioned on mtv in german news they were showing clips of the old band as in paradise city... Are they showing clips of the old guns in your area or taking the clips from the 2002 shows and playing them...?

So far there was a little news item on the television, teletext saying GNR will be performing and it's on the internet site of Goffertpark. That's it! Kinda surprises me. I thought there would be posters, flyers etc. Even in the postoffice this morning, GNR wasn't even listed on their list of what you can buy tickets for!  ??? Of course, the show was announced Tuesday and ticket sale started today so there wasn't much time, but it is still amazing that I haven't seen it or read about it. People around me know I'm a big GNR fan and so far nobody called me to say did you know GNR is performing in the Netherlands?

So you had to find out here or that site you listed above..  Did the teletext say anything about the band or anything like it, or was it just a line on the bottom of your screen saying gnr playing _____? Are ticket sales going along?

if i would not be a regular at gnr boards, i`d know that gnr are playing rar and some other festivals this year....

somewhere i read something along the lines of " despite the fight between slash and axl, the new gnr album "chinese democracy" is set to be released this summer and the band plans to play various festivals". so i guess it`s safe to say that there are lots of people who happen to be quite misinformed about the current situation in gnr.....

but as i said before i can`t judge on the situation in other countries with headlining gnr shows...

As mentioned, there are still what.. 2 months left to go before the shows?

Don't you think it's a good thing (for us hardcore fans at our community here) that they haven't advertised a lot at this stage? Seems cool and well deserved that we get kinda 'first picks' of the tickets. It would suck if we missed out because they sold out to people who aren't really big followers like us.

I can't believe I just said "soon". That word should be banned on GNR forums.  :hihi:

wow I thought it would be a little different... I know there is time left...

Does it worry you at all forthe countries using clips of the old band that this can be misleading and cause problems if people were hoping to see others

yeah but we can`t buy tickets when an insider claims to know about an upcoming gnr show.....

i never looked at it from this perspective.....sounds cool to me : ok:

and using clips of the old band is ok to me, but the new line up should be mentioned though...

the boston promo clip is a good example of how the promotion ought to be....

Yes, it is cool that I get to be the one to tell others the band is performing this year. Oh, the teletext said only 'for the first time in 13 years GNR will be performing in the Netherlands. Which band members Axl Rose will bring on the stage with him will later be disclosed' (in other words: the promotors don't know that one either  :hihi:) Some people complained that the word came out on Tuesday and that gave people very little time to get the money to buy tickets (4 days), especially since it is the end of the month. Well, tickets were only 45 euros a piece, which isn't bad considering it is a big band and Alice In Chains is opening.

my idea for promotion at least on tv would be the evolution of gnr, show pics from it's earliest days and as time goes on pop a new guy in for an old to get the brighter pic

With the insiders I meant more like the second the tickets are on sale you will know, no chance you'll miss out..

yeah, but without promotion in the first place, the concerts are selling slow (in the beginning) and any hardcore gnr fan can get his ticket. then after two weeks the promotion kicks in and the concert sells out....( in the best case)

would be a nice move from management if it was their intention. there are probably lots of people who don`t have the chance to attend a gnr concert in finland for example, because they didn`t get to know it early enough or might don`t even know it as of yet, but any gnr fan on this forum got his ticket....

I don't think that was their intentions,.. I really think it's just mismanaged.. I think they feel the tickets will sell and axl will show everything else is up for grabs.. There has been ages to have this thing started off right, they could have had this thing top notch right from the first tour date announcement

I also wanted to say I can understand small metnions if they are playing a big festival with other acts where the fans will still buy tickets.. I think the harder part would be them touring as the main act with no promotion

I am sure it'll all go great, I am just suprised after such a long layoff and not knowing who exactly is in teh badn they would have had ti set up better faster

There were some advertisements in major daily newspapers in the netherlands (Spits and Telegraaf). In Spits there was even a small article about it, written by some frustrated journalist because he still has tickets of the GNR concert in the Netherlands in 2002 (also Nijmegen). But that's about it.

I haven't seen any promotion here in Sweden, but that's probably because it sold out in one day. They only advertise shows that doesn't sell as good as they would like.

Here in Finland I saw one TV ad featuring Live and Let Die footage. Gn'R also mentioned as rockgiant rarely doing gigs.

Then some mention in entertaiment news. Tickets sold out, another gig annouced also told in news. And that's the promo. I wonder if they had planned something but the gig(s) sold out too fast, I guess.

Like what was said earlier in this thread there's no promotion besides one ad in one small newspaper and the fact that GnR is performing popping up on some of the bigger newssites. But that's it.

The thing is however that I don't think it's selling that good here in the Netherlands.

yeah you would think here they'd be like gnr is back but playing in europe first....  I know when cream did  afew gigs in the uk American rock radio stations were always talking about it, saying I wish they would come here..... After a gnr song you hear nothing, maybe just that there are lawsuits out there

So far it seems like "gnr" is billed with motley crue in some areas, old footage has been used in other countries and little or no adds on other places and no mentioned here in America

Send some promoter in France a DVD bootleg from the 2002 tour. Maybe that would get the ball rolling.

FYI, even with this promotion several headlining arena shows sold out.

I guess you'd want them to promote those as well so you could whine about them promoting sold out shows....

In all fairness, GNR does not require much promo.  I think the strategy/mgts bet is to sell as many tickets as possible before RIO, and then let the hype coming from a great showing there, fill the rest of the arenas.  It is cost effective!  Also, I don't think Sanctuary is in a position to fork out much cash on promotion right now.

In Germany, MTV is promoting the show at "Rock Am Ring" festival with a 2 second clip of Axl and Slash from 1992/93.

Plus, in all TV spots, GN'R are mentioned after bands like Korn, Placebo and some random german bullshit acts even I have never heard of.

That's all promotion the show gets.

The concert promoter is obviously not intrested in promoting the band. They get a "one of many other bands" treatment, and though it's not 1992 anymore, I think they deserve a bit more than that.

Very few promo, very bad promo.

Same can be said about the concert in Nijmegen (Netherlands) that I will attend. On their website, the promoters were advertising the show with a pic of Slash and Duff! Great promotion...  ::)
