Since many people here own the Welcome To The Videos DVD/VHS, I thought we could do something "fun".

Let's list all the interesting facts about the videos, weird things seen in them etc..

I loved how they filmed this vid to get the effect it did.
They used a stobe light, and after filming they edited out all the dark parts and just used the part when the strobe light was on.

there was live 4 or 5 different varations on this vid with diff pics and one even had just the band performing if i remember correctly.

I don't think the video was banned because IIRC  Axl wasn't going out with Erin Everly when I came time to release the vid and he didn't want it released. I read that in an interview somewhere. The only copy I have seen of it though is off a shitty 20th generation copy (almost unwatchable)

Axl tried to stop copies of that vid circulating when his abuse cases came to court.

Estranged:

It's not actually slash that is in the walking on water guitar solo bit.

The kid at the begining is Axl.

Paradise City:

The reason Axl and Izzy don't appear in the non live stuff is because they were off getting high.

Teddy Zig-Zag and Dizzy are headbanging in the background.

what? it isnt slash? sure? i know he had a "double" but that was just a joke on the set....

i also rember him complaining about the cold and he cant wear a wetsuit inside the leatherpants! its been along time since i saw the making of, but im pretty sure its slash in the standing on water scene...

If you look, it's the doubles clothes at least...

I believe the double was used to rise up out of the water, and that the real Slash is used once out of the water, I think they didn't want to take a chance of drowning the real Slash.  If you want to try to tell the difference between the two, the fake Slash can't play guitar, and thus they don't show his fingers on the fretboard, only from behind and they don't show that much either, because it is painfully apparent that he's not playing the solo.  If you can tell that he is playing the solo, then that is the real Slash (I think).

The Estranged video doesn't show massive detail of any band member except Axl really.

Gilby throws Axl the life-ring, Duff is in the boat in the sea, Dizzy is on the street outside the Rainbow Bar And Grill, Slash isn't seen so clearly, and the live shots are pretty dire at times.

So who knows?

Slash gets decent featured time during his first guitar solo, and I know that's the real Slash.  I don't understand why the didn't show his feet during that solo, the fact that they don't makes it look more like he's standing on a conveyer belt rather than floating down the sidewalk.  I can see why they wouldn't show his feet if they went with the original plan of belting his feet into a car and pushing it down the sidewalk, but since they decided to rig him up to a crane I think it would have looked better to show his feet.

Estranged:
Some of the people who are leaving Axl?s house: his brother; his manager Doug Goldstein; and Beta (the last woman to appear).

Garden of Eden:
2 Versions: In the one without the lyrics below, Matt gets rid of the drum sticks and start punching his drum, getting faaaar away from the song?s rithym.

Paradise City: The shirt the guy in the crowd is wearing is an Appetite For Destruction shirt not a UYI shirt which would just impossible unless it was Michael J. Fox  :hihi:

Its So Easy: The above info is correct.. apparently the video shows footage of Erin tied up or something so Axl tried to get these outta circulation before Erin had him in court making those accusations.

Since I Dont Have You: This video sucked  :peace:

Sympathy For The Devil: Was a video ever made?

Don't Cry:
On the roof top there is a very short clip (about 1 second) of Axl wearing a St. Louis Cardinals baseball hat.  This is obviously a very sly reference by Axl to his St. Louis troubles that were occuring around the time the video was made.

The next question is from Stuart in England who asks, "In the video of 'Estranged', you are playing the second solo as you rise out of the water, and in 'Don't Cry' you throw a guitar over the cliff. I'm just wondering if you have a stunt guitar double just for these moments, or if they are just guitars from your collection? Did you find the one that went over the cliff, and does the wet one still work???!!!"

SLASH replies, "I did use stunt guitars for both videos. And yes, I did find the one that went over the cliff but it was broken. The wet one never worked in the first place."

I have a question! In the Dead Horse video, what does the Tshirt that is censored say? Anyone know?

in the vid for LIVE AND LET DIE towards the end, you notice a milk carton that eventually disappears, its says MISSING and a picture of IZZY. You can see in ESTRANGED i think when AXLS walking down sunset, you can see the DONT CRY vid in the back ground when AXL is drowning with that chick. IT IS NOT SLASH playing on the ESTRANGED solo in the water, on the "makin' fuckin' videos slash actually see's the stunt double, you can really tell if you watch closely anyway, the dudes bigger or fatter slightly and he cant even play the guitar, you can just tell.
I think its funny how DUFF is always saving AXLS arse and on the SINCE I DONT HAVE YOU vid he's just kicking back smokeing kissin' that chick and at the end when SLASH throws his guitar pick,its like he's saying catcha later, im laying down my guns. : ok:

from what i remember of that making of vid
they had a stunt double but i thought slash decided to do the stunt himself and axl commented about it by saying something ike it meant alot that slash did the stunt himself or something like that

In the Don't Cry vid, you see Axl having a therapy session - that woman was one of his first therapists, i think her name is Suzy London.

In the November Rain video you see Rikki Rachtman sitting at the table at the reception.

I always thought it was "axl fuck me."  Just a guess really.  Anyone wonder why WTTV still has this censored?

Yah, Axl is wearing a St. Lous Sucks tshirt, but that's not censored. I mean the shirt or banner or something Axl is carrying across the front of the stage. It is blurred out.

Yah, LAMF means "Like a Motherfucker". Which Duff says in You Can't Wrap Your Arms Around a Memory. LAMF was the title of a Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album.

Wow! This is a great topic! I'm planning on making my own 'GN'R videos' website that would basically detail every video clip, including the varients etc and hopfully upload the ones the were never made officially available, so all these facts etc would come in very usful!

I'm pretty sure I've seen two different versions of the You Could Be Mine video fairly recently - basically one of them has more clips from T2, notably at the beginning. This video still gets shown a lot on UK music TV channels - especially Q and Karrang.

Could it have been a shot from the Paris 92 show.. I remember Axl calls out for Slash's attention and shows him the "Axl FucK Me" shirt.. maybe its a shot from when he first got the shirt and was walking with it back to the stage.. I forgot the Dead Horse vid

hi guys, i'm new the board... i;'ve been a gnr fan for a while but there are things i never thought to research online... like the November Rain video, Erin being in 'Sweet Child...' video, etc.   Really interesting information.  I was wondering if anybody had any more trivia that nobody else knew about the past members?  I was particularly interested in videos but I'd love any juicy bits.  Is that baby in 'Estranged' somebody's?  And am i fucking blind or is that the same woman being used for Gilby, Duff, and Matt in the 'Since I Don't Have You' video, but not for Dizzy?

They probably just "flipped" the actually version of the video so it looked like he was left-handed (like a mirror image).

Izzy is the drug dealer in WTTJ.
Shannon Hoon, the late singer of Blind Melon sings with the band on the roof in Don't Cry.
The snake that Slash plays with in the bed where all the women jumps in but Slash ignores them in the Patience video is Clyde, his favourite pet snake boa that he had during all GnR. It passed away a coupple of years ago. But I think that  that Snake saw fucking everything in Gunner land, Slash took him to rehearsals, on tour, in studio. If there would be one who knew when CD comes out, it would be Clyde !   ;D

This is something I have noticed in the Don't Cry vid and it's stupid but none the less something I noticed, when Slash is playing the guitar solo in front of the church and he lifts his guitar up, he has a hole in his crotch in his pants. :)

In Estranged when Axl leans against the gate infront of the tv's, on the tv's is a shot of Stephanie in the underwater scene in the Don't Cry vid.

there's two versions to sweet child o'mine one that has black and white scenes and colr scenes and is edited,
and another one that is all black an white and in the end turns to color....

also in scom i'm not sure but it looks like bono or the edge appear in that video

In the Pardise video       they put footage in from the donnington show where a couple of fans died during there set.

Okay, here is my contribution...

In the November Rain video, one of Stephanie's brides maids is Axl's sister, Amy. 

Yeah, that happens in the SCOM video too... During the second chorus, after the shot zooming in from Izzy's guitar, where Axl has his hands in the air... His 'Sunstrip Tattoo Parlour' t-shirt disappears (he's wearing only the jacket), and then reappears!

In You Could Be Mine, Izzy is in the video, but in the end with Arnorld he is not...

I think he had left GNR then...and they continued the video without him

boromir, you are correct. Many years ago, I read a Slash interview and he said how Izzy didn't show up for that segment of the video, and it was basically the end of the Izzy era. I will always be a huge Izzy fan, but I hate how he left the band at such a strange point in time. You can understand why there is so much animosity between Axl and Izzy. Axl seen the move as somewhat of a betrayal. I agree. Axl kind of throws it in his face in the first couple of videos on Illusions. The 'Where's Izzy' sign in Dont Cry, and the 'Izzy missing' milkcarton on Live and let Die video.

I think that animosity died rather quickly though.  In the video for Yesterdays they show tons of pictures with Izzy.  That's a great song, and video...but its tough to watch.  Looking at pictures of them so young and seemingly happy with each other.  That's what we need to do!  We need to lock Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff, and Steve in a room with a TV and just play that video.  They'd be hugging and planning a reunion in no time.  Who's with me?  I've got nothing to do tomorow.

Unreleased, bootlegs of a rough cut are easily available. Shot at The Cathouse (owned by Headbanger's Ball host Riki Rachman), in LA on 10th and 11th of October 1989. The video notably features Axl's ex-wife Erin Everly.

Welcome To The Jungle [MTV VMAs 88] (Dir. unknown)
Occasionally used as a music video (notably on MTV2 UK). It is the live performance of WTTJ at the MTV Video Music Awards 1988, also that night they won Best New Artist Award for Nigel Dick's WTTJ video. This has also appeared on the home video 'MTV Select Performances (1995)' 

You Could Be Mine (Dir. Andy Morohan/James Cameron)
Live footage filmed at The Ritz, NY on the 16th of May 1991 mixed with footage from the 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' trailer. At the end Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an appearence with the band as The Terminator, during this sequence Izzy is missing, although he does appear in the live footage. The reason why YCBM was left off of 'Welocme To the Videos' is unclear (getting clearence for the T2 footage?), however it was most probably due to Arnold Schwarzenegger - he is notorious for asking for unreasonable fees for these kind of video or dvd appearances.

Don't Cry [Alt. Lyrics] (Dir. Andy Morohan)
Never officially released. Edited from unused/alternate rooftop footage from Andy Morohan's Don't Cry [original] video. In Making F@*!in Videos Pt. I, Axl notes that when the band played the new Alternative Lyrics version of Don't Cry during the filming, the band completely cut loose, this is some of the footage. Shannon Hoon appears a back-up vocalist. 

Live And Let Die [Live] (Dir. unknown)
Live performance from GNR's gig at Wembly Stadium on the 31st August 1991. This was shown during MTV Video Music Awards 1991 via satellite, due to this it is occasionally used as a music video.

Civil War [Live] (Dir. unknown)
From Tokyo, Japan, 22nd Feb 1992, it is part of the Use Your Illusion I & II home videos.

Yesterdays [Live] (Dir. unknown)
Live performance from Las Vegas, 25th January 1992. It was also shown on the 1992 American Music Awards. Audio from this performance was used as a B-Side, and eventually on the Live Era '87-'93 CDs)

Knockin' On Heaven's Door [Live] (Dir. David Mallet)
Performance from 'The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert' at Wembley Stadium, April 20th 1992.

Garden Of Eden [Alt. Version] (Dir. Andy Morohan)
This is an alternate take of the one-take Garden Of Eden video. Easily found on the internet (notably http://music.yahoo.com/musicvideos/). This version does not have the lyrics at the bottom of the screen. Also a wind machine is used, and shredded paper is thrown at the band, due to this it has become known as 'Garden Of Eden w/ Paper'

I Don't Care About You (Dir. August Jakobsson)
It is unknown if this video actually exists (most probably not). It is listed as being from late 1993, and being directed by August Jakobsson who directed the videos for  Duff's 'Believe In Me' and Slash's Snakepit's 'Good To Be Alive'.

Welcome To The Jungle [Live Era '87 - '91] (Dir. Jeff Richter)
Promo for the Live Era '87 - '91 CDs, mirrors Nigel Dick's original WWTJ video by using news footage of various street riots/war correspondence (and curiously Bill Clinton & Monica Lewinsky), mixed in with footage of the band from the Use You Illusion tour. Also includes a fair bit of film from the St. Louis riot and Axl's subsequent arrest.

It's So Easy [Live Era '87 - '91] (Dir. Nigel Dick/Jeff Richter)
Again a promo for the Live Era '87 - '91 CDs. It is a redited version of Nigel Dick's unreleased It's So Easy video (see above), mixed in with still photos from Robert John's book 'Guns N' Roses: A Photographic History'. It is concievable that Robert John's photos are used in this promo (and the Live Era CD booklet) as a settlement from when he sued Axl for allegedly refusing to honor an earlier contract he had with GNR.

Not as far as I know. I've been desperately looking for it for years. The amazing thing is everytime I go to the Hard Rock Cafe in Paris, they play it on their giant screen. One day I should ask where they got it from  ;D

I think its interesting that Nigel Dick(director of the SCOM video also directed The offsprings Gone Away video, Britany Spears, Baby one more time among lots of other stuff.
SCOM could have been this guys entrance to the big time of directing vids.

Is Izzy the only one who's not shown outside of the performance part in the Patience video?

Jarmo, good question. I'm surprised its never been brought up before. I guess Izzy had already stopped caring. Has he ever done an interview where he explains his discontent towards videos? I never understood why he seemed to hate it so much. Do you think he might be the reason GNR only did one video for Lies? I always thought they could have milked the album much more than they did.

Did you notice.... in Estranged video, at Slash first solo, we can see only a few extras walkin on the street. Always the same girl with her red jacket (if I remember). When you have seen it one time, you'll see it everytime  :confused:

What has been buggin' me lately, is that I can't seem to figure out what video it is where Axl sticks out his tongue on a closeup shot, where the camera is right in his face  :confused:
Somebody help please!. . . In WTTJ I noticed that Axl has his shirt on, than for a quick second when he gets on his knees the shirt disappears, than when he gets back up it's there again, I'm sure others have noticed this too though

Izzy is shown outside the performance portion of the video, although only for a few moments he is seen playing the acoustic during the bridge of the song in what looks like a waiting room/airport to me.

About the garden of eden the way they got that effect on the video, they used a strobe light and when they played it back they cut out all the dark parts and use just the ones where the light was on, thus you get that choppy effect.

November Rain and Las Vegas 2001 comparasion

anyone notice the blue jacket he wears at the wedding party looks like the jacket he wears at the Las Vegas show in 2001.

Does anyone remember Andy Morhan (I think that's his name) in vh1 a few years back in so many words ripping on Axl? I think it was about the change in the storyline from Nov. rain to estranged-Andy looked much heavier-I know if you watch the making of estranged you can see a lot of people frustrated working on it-I still thought it was a good video.

Speaking of 'Makin Of...', where can you get them?Can't find them :(

He didn't "rip" Axl. He said the videos just didn't make sence to him, and to be fair to him not many people do actually understand what the videos are about.

I always wondered about this vid--so the speed of the vid isn't tampered w/?? I always thought they double timed it or something, bc it looks like Axl isn't singing along w/ the words...but you say it has to do w/ the strobe lights?? hmmm thanks for the info

You can't really see Slash's face ever--when he's playing guitar his face is really covered up by his curls.? The only shot of him outside the "stage" is the shot of his hand grazing his girfriend's butt whose wearing a black tight mini.
Judging from photos (from a mag), Axl & co had a lot of makeup on for this vid (Axl looks like a china doll almost--although he does have naturally beautiful skin)

the scene where Slash is in front of the tvs/stores, he is passed out and doesn't remember much from that shot
the only girl they could get for that vid was Steven's girlfriend--the one he licks her shoulder
according to Nigel Dick (director) Axl wanted to have his hair huge and teased and then never ever have it like that again

I know this was mentioned in another thread, but just so you know...Andy (director) said that the graveyard scene, the funeral is shot during the day, then Axl returns in the night bc he went to the dentist that day and couldn't make the shot

Axl is actually nude when he's painted green (if you have the making of the vids, and you freeze frame this scene, you can sort of make out his bits in the shadows if you cross your eyes and stick out your tounge ;)? )---my fav Axl moment of all time
Brightney (wrong spp) the blonde girl who goes pshyco in the car w/ Slash is/was a model and this scene was losely based on Slash's expeirence w/ a young girl at one time...
the brunette model w/ Duff in the hallway of the stadium is an actress who appeared on one episode of Fraiser, and the bottle she wips at Duff was real glass.? Duff was surprised to hear it was real glass!? :)

Just watched Estranged video after a while.
I fucking hate it.
In one single (albeit very long) rock video, they have managed to stash;

- A goddamned Swat team.Flashlights, medical supplies and semi automatic handguns.
- Shrink team.
- Atleast 3 different limousines.
- A passenger jet.
- A helicopter.
- A moteherfucking Oil Tanker.
- Rowboat!
- Dolphins!
- Footage from Rock in Rio
- Typical selection of hot whores.
- Dolphins!

I don't know who wrote/directed the video but it is so tastelessly over done and over produced that it is sickening!
Most fucked up Michael Jackson videos(including one with huge Jacko statue and helicopters) look like an amateur punk band reharsal footage when compared to Estranged video, really.
Is it a video of Estranged? Or a trailer of a movie by James Cameron? I just don't know!
Of course, GNR wrestled in juggernautic mega-mammoth class back in 93 and thus, they had "right" to vomit out such overdone videos. But it doesn't mean they should have.

I do firmly believe it is mega super star bullshit such as Estranged video that alienated loads of teens from overly swollen  stadion rock to grunge.
I mean,
In other corner you got Axl jumping from an oil tanker, to be saved by Swat team riding helicopter-dolphins played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In another corner, you got stuff like Smells like Teenspirit, where Kurt headbags violently with these junkie teens and even janitor has great time!
It is very easy to believe it is stuff like  this that summoned a mental state somewhere along the lines of "GNR is a band 'they' ment for us, Nirvana is a band all about us."

More or less same crap applies to Don't Cry video aswell.But, unlike Estranged,  Don't Cry has lots of cool shit?, which does a great deal in helping to forgive the swolled megavideo-shit.
The Axl dealing with past lives/alter egoes/rebirth is cool shit?,the real(?)Axl buried alive is coolshit,  the "gunslinger Axl" at the start of the video is cool shit?, and the whole bunch of Axls with one hopping back to mirrow is too, cool shit?.
Then they just have to bring crashing cars and helicopters along.
November Rain is just BLAAAAAAAAAAH but somehow it isn't BLAAAAAAAAAH in annoying way.


(For the record I love Estranged and November Rain to death as songs, in case someone was paranoid enough to question that)

All 'big important' tracks got the unexiting "big budget" - treatment though.

I myself love the big videos.....hey, if you have the money to make big videos such as Don't Cry , November Rain and Estranged...I say go for it! I Never get sick of watching them.
