Title: GNR outros
Post by: Mr. Dick Purple on November 15, 2005, 02:38:53 PM
I was searching the message board if anyone had made a topic about this but couldn't find.
Anyway the thing is that the best band that had excellent outros is GNR, from songs like november rain, locomotive, rocket queen, double talking jive the outros seem to have that special touch of yearning of hear the song over and over again.
Do you think that the new record will have this kinda of outros?

Yeah! The best outro i ever heard is the one on Coma! Axl sings so fucking great there!
I hope there are alot of heavy outros on the new record.

Good topic! I love the Locomotive and Nightrain outros. Something about a fade out i love.

Maddie has got the best of the new bunch i think, with Axl and Robin overlapping lines.

Rocket Queen and Locomotive outros are in the same level as Stairway to Heaven's one IMO! :headbanger:

I agree totally,  Locamotive being a favorite, RQ, November rain is up there, and patience is also cool.
I think its's the creativity that axl brings to his music.
I really hope "the new album" see's the light of day.

Locomotive or Coma - even if i wouldnt call that last minute an outro, it's pretty much a part of the song -

Yeah definitely!? Everytime I hear RQ's outro I think of Chuck Klosterman's book about rock n roll and how he calls that outro "the best 2 minutes of rock ever created" or something like that.? Can't remember the exact quote or even the title of his book.?

As to the big three new songs; Love the Blues outro, Maddy's is pretty cool, but not a big fan of CD's outro (although it could have been changed 19 times by now).

I love Its So Easy's outro.. and Mr. Brownstone's outro. They both have the same thing going.. the quick change of tempo.. cool stuff.

And Rocket Queen's outro is just amazing. To say that it was the best 2 min of rock 'n roll is certainly not out of the question. I remember the first time I heard it.. thought the song was about to end.. and BAM! Freakin great

Locomotive's outro is easily my favorite - drums, piano, Axl, and just a little bit of guitar as the melody hurdles ahead... it's just awesome.

Breakdown and also Patience are great. Not a huge fan of Don't Cry's...

Although is not a GNR song, Sympathy for the Devil's outro kicks ass too.

Locomotive, SCOM, and Double Takin' Jive all have killer outros but to me, Breakdown's outro shits all over them :D

Out of the new songs, Maddy has the best outro, Axl overlapping Robin's brilliant backup vocals is sheer bliss.

Right on man, I guess I change my previous thought and Maddy now ties with the Blues as best outro of the new songs.  I remember first hearing Madagascar and that was what really stuck out to me as being great.  I don't know what it is, but there's something about Robin's voice that mends well with Axl's.

Listening to Maddy is like a rollercoaster ride. The intro and so on is so eerie and suspensful with that remarkable voice..then you get to the chorus and it kicks so much ass...get to the bridge/quotes on top of that sweet ass solo and theres just no goin back, this song has it all...finally the quotes/solo mount to a boiling point and then you get Axl and Robin doing a remarkable outro duet..its genious. I really hope we see alot of songs where Robin's vocals shine, and arent just background sounds. Maybe Robin will take up the Izzy role in the band and have a few tracks of his own :D

On topic The Breakdown outro it's one of the best the singing of the paranoic part it's excellent I'd say that those mood changes could fit exactly how Axl sometimes feels in certain days  :nervous:

What are you talking about, it is exactly the opposite. Live and let die is a fantastic song.

Anyway, my favourite outro is the spanish guitar in Double talking jive

You're fucking kidding about Breakdown right? I was just casually reading this thread and this just stopped me cold. Fucking wow. Look. I understand this is all a subjective kind of thing but Breakdown? Man, to me, this is one of the bigger crimes GN'R has ever done musically. The last part of Breakdown anally rapes what is otherwise a beautiful song. This is example A of when I talk about GN'R losing their way and the missteps the UYI's had musically.

Fuck we have had countless discussions on this in the past here. Breakdown is such a fucking awesome thing but then some shit goes down that just stabs you in the balls. When the "Breakdown" part of the chorus kicks in it is "oh no time." But fuck that outro is one evil motherfucker aint it? I can't even bring myself to listen to that whole song. Half way through and booop. Skip time. What a fucking buzz kill that shit is.

I really think it is an unarguable fact (even though I know its subjective). I would love to see someone try and rationalize that bullshit. Its worse then Milkboy. Yea, I said it!

Hey, just want to add that I think Rocket Queen has the greatest true outro. Some of the ones you guys are saying aren't true outros...but whatever. RQ is some sweet masterpiece RNR.

I also agree with you, it takes the song in the wrong closing direction IMO, however i can still listen to the whole song

As someone said with PC its the perfect way to end a concert with the whole band going full out

Rocket Queen is EASILY the best outro to any Guns song.  I can literally play it over and over again.  Axl sounds amazing and slash is just going nuts.  It actually depresses me a little b/c its so amazing I always wonder what could have been.....sigh.  oh well.
not really sure why everyone is so giddy about locomotive.  GREAT SONG, but the outro usually gets the SKIP on my ipod.  I agree about the ending of BREAKDOWN being a waste of time too.  But to each their own.

SCOM as mentioned before, has a sick outro as well.  Same thing as Rocket Queen...Axl and Slash are just in a zone in those songs.  As corny as it sounds, its like magic...like a priveledge to get to listen to that!

I cant believe why people think breakdown has a sucky ending it is one of the greatest!! is very deferent for whatever song you have ever heard in history of music, thats why I keep saying GNR has the best fucking outro in the world, no one can compare them and that song is one of their masterpiece  :P

I like the outro to Breakdown musically, but it's the way Axl speaks/sings the outro that really cripples the ending for me, and it's also what Axl wanting to rework on the song if he had the time. By the way, I agree it is a total masterpiece otherwise : ok:

It's just Axl's crap talk in the end that ruins the song:

But...it is written if the Evil Spirit arms the Tiger with claws
Brahman provided wings for the Dove
Thus spake the Super Guru?

For me, it's a tie between November Rain and Patience.

Although GNR has a reputation for fantastic outros, I can't say that a fantastic outro would have altered my opinion of Silkworms, however, I wish that Oh My God had something more distinctive at the end.

I suppose to add another element to this topic, I'll ask this question:
Do you feel that there are any songs that need better outros (besides Breakdown, as some have mentioned)?

Coma is awesome because theres that middle part that makes me want to die! It is a rockin' song!

Me too, I've kinda been playing all of the songs mentioned in this thread, fast forwarding to the endings haha.  After all that -  I have to say Rocket Queen still rules, but PC isn't too far behind it.

You could be mine hasn't been mentioned at all either...the ending is pretty awesome...but the part where in the middle/toward the end where Axl just goes nuts still gives me goosebumps.  I remember watching MTV when they first premiered the song/video, wondering if Guns would be able to follow up AFD.....clearly I (and millions others) wasn't disappointed.

Not time enough to read the whole thread.

But, you're definatly right.   : ok:

Incidently...Another band that have some of the best outro's ever written are Blind Melon.

Personally, as far as outro's go, I think that they're right up there with GNR.

Just listen to the end of Dumptruck if you don't know what I'm talking about...

Definatly a masterclass in how a song should end.

Rocket Queen and Locomotive outros are in the same level as Stairway to Heaven's one IMO! :headbanger:

Yeah definitely!? Everytime I hear RQ's outro I think of Chuck Klosterman's book about rock n roll and how he calls that outro "the best 2 minutes of rock ever created" or something like that.? Can't remember the exact quote or even the title of his book.?

The outro in Rocket Queen is the best thing i've ever heard in my life, it's so emotional, it's the best sound ever.

I don't like fades, to me they show an innability to end a song. But there certainly were a lot on Guns albums...

Id say CITR has a pretty decent outro.. although it doesn compaire to patience or RQ because those songs... they sort of switch gearsfor the outro.. like a different song

No, it's Robin. Pittman only sang the backing vocals in this song in RIR3.
