I think this is really cool.  I love all these guys so should be pretty interesting.  I still wish Jason was back with Metallica though.  They just don't seem like Metallica with out him.  Go back Jason!

Back in the early 1990s, a poppy punk trio called SUPERNOVA emerged from California's Orange County. The band, which released its first album on Atlantic Records in 1995, is perhaps best known for the track "Chewbacca", which appeared on the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's "Clerks".

As previously reported, SUPERNOVA will be utilizing the "Rock Star" TV program to search for a lead singer. In addition, "Rock Star" has signed songwriter-performer Butch Walker to produce SUPERNOVA's first album, to be released just before the new band hits the road in 2007. Walker, named Rolling Stone's 2005 "hot" producer, has written or produced tracks for AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK, BOWLING FOR SOUP and TOMMY LEE.

Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts. Each weekly episode, which will air on CBS-TV, will also now feature guest appearances by celebs or rockers.

INXS did the same thing last year to enormous success, choosing Nova Scotia-bred J.D. Fortune to front the Australian band.

Rock Star talent scouts are currently auditioning hopefuls around the world. The crew stopped in Toronto earlier this week where about 2,000 tried their luck. The show heads to Vancouver on March 23 for more auditions.

Last season, 15 finalists - which included four Canadians - were selected for the show, hosted by Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke.

The winner of Rock Star will record an album with Supernova.

The CD will be produced by Butch Walker, who's written or produced tracks for Avril Lavigne, Pink and Bowling for Soup.

Last night I saw on E NEWS that Slash was the one aproached but the show couldnt afford both TOmmy Lee and Slash, but this news is completely different...they never mentioned Jason, or that the show is to find a singer for this super group..they were just looking for judges. WEIRD!

The strange thing is is that there already is a band that was signed to Atlantic Records called "Supernova".  I'm afraid this new version will probably have to change their name. 

I bet if this show was on before VR became a reality Slash would have gone this route to find a new lead singer.  I could have sworn I heard it was official that Van Halen were doing Rockstar???? When did that change?

It's nice to see Gilby get this-I think he deserves it-he kind of kept things going for me in the mid to late 90's when there was not much going on at all in the Guns n Roses world-his solo albums started selling less and less, and I remember going to concerts of his where there were maybe 40 or 50 people-it's hard to knock him for turning this down-Gilby has a strong opinion on the type of music he likes to do-it should be interesting to see how he gets along with Tommy and Jason-I just think this is shaping up to be a great year-like I said, remember the mid to late 90's? This year we will have this, a new Guns album, and a new Velvet Revolver album-I think we are all in for a fun ride.

if you're into 80's hair metal check his band Southgang, or if you're into kick ass hard rock check his Marvellous 3  2"ready sex go" album or the hit single "freak of the week", but his best stuff was difinitly his 2 solo albums - left of self centered (with nikky sixx guesting) and Letters.

To me, I think you have to realize that Television is becoming the record company. The marketing and placement from being on TV is second to none. Some artists (like Tommy Lee) have developed a niche in television for themselves that runs hand in hand with making music. And I think that those artists are the winners. I have heard the new Panic Channel stuff, and anyone who says that Dave's creativity has suffered from his (relatively) new found television celebrity is just tripping! The TPC stuff sounds fucking amazing, and Dave's celebrity has NOTHING to do with the music he makes. So I think that Celebrity overtaking Art doesn't apply. They received some coverage in some Finnish entertainment news. They were being referred to as consisting of members of Ex-GNR, Ex-Metallica and Ex-Cr?e - well I think at least Gilby was called by name also. It was amusing to see WTTJ - Live Era video playing during the news bit, with Axl and Slash running about the whole time. No wonder they made an issue about the Ex-GNR angle.

From what I've heard from people who have seen Gilby live, is that he's quite a good lead guitarist, he just never showed  that side in GN'R because that was Slash's role. So I hope we get to hear some cool Gilby guitar playing at least.

There's this punk band in California that was started in 1989 who call themselves "Supernova" just like this Gilby band.? Well the punk Supernova filed a lawsuit or something against the tv station and whomever because they own/copyrighted the name and didn't give anyone permission to use it.? The guy on the radio said that CBS (the tv station) are shittin themselves because the Gilby Supernova show is supposed to start Wednesday July 5 and they have all this time and money and merchandise and whatever all set to go and now can't use!!!? The guy on the radio also said that these punk Supernova guys are like "pure punk" (my words, not theirs) and probably won't sell out for any amount of money!!!?

I think it will be more hard rock-Gilby is very "classic rock"-Jason seems pretty flexible on his side projects (see Echobrain)-Tommy's solo records are very pop-I think they will want  a very heavy record, though-gut feeling-Gilby will be interesting as lead guitarist

no you moron... the first episode itself will include live portions of the contestants singing in front of the judges (American Idol style)... it's not just some "Supergroup"-like documentary on the potential singers... it's a singing competition

first off, the first episodes are not about the competition, just to get to know who ever is in the show, and to show case the band. and see the candidates get settled in... wich we all saw... maybe we just didn't get to see all the candidates profiles up close, but other than that it did seem like a whole episode...

Watching it now, I love the original song that Gilby, Jason and Tommy jam on in the studio when we first see them playing together, that's the stuff VR should be writing.

I just hope they get a great singer out of this. Out of the contestants there are some duds, and some great singers. But so far I think the girls are out-singing the guys!

I dunno, but most of the guys come off as sounding whiny with their singing, in their attempts to sound original. The way they drag out certain notes makes them sound worse than if they were to sing the songs more straight-forward. I mean come on, it's a dirty rock band, not American Idol!

The girls just go nuts on stage, while the guys haven't impressed me all that much.
I want a badass to front this band (girl or guy), not some whiny college-student type.

And that Chris guy is just shit. The fact that he thinks he's really really good, makes me dislike him even more. I really hope he doesn't get chosen to front the band.

i liked ryan star... the goo goo dolls version he was singing in the very first episode, in the ending, was really good, he was just singin' it for the first time, alone, and it showcased a lot of potencial, he created a lot of hamornies that weren't in the original and he sounded even better then the original version, but when he played it with the band it was not as impressive... still i think he problably can do better, just like he did the first time he played it... it showed potencial, to bad he had trouble delievering it... but it's gotta be nerve racking to be there for the first time, so i'm still a believer...

no offence to females. but if a girl wins, its not the rock band im looking for.

Zahyra (or whatever her name is) actually just ripped on the band members of Supernova...

Gilby Clarke after she sang a punk interpretation of Van Halen's "You Really Got Me" questioned her: "I don't think you have any clue of what we're looking for in a singer. I mean... have you ever heard one of our records?"

She responds: "I've heard of your bands... But I was still in diapers when your records came out."

ahahhahahaha... she expects to get into this band after ripping on the band like that!!??? jason, gilby & tommy were noticably hurt by what she said and looked ticked. hahahhaa

She's shit anyway, and it's noticeable that she can't hit certain notes when she's singing. Her Bjork style of "can't-sing-for-shit-so-I'll-just-yell-instead" doesn't suit the band at all.

I watched Rock Star last year, and though I think INXS are all a bunch of pricks and Tommy Lee and Gilby kick major ass, the contestants suck in comparison to last year's show. There were a lot of very talented singers on last year's show (J.D., Marty, Ty, Jordis, Mig, Suzie). This year, nobody really stands out. It's hard to believe that these are the best people they could find. A few of this year's contestants are alright (my favorite is the possessed looking chick with the voice of a seventy-year-old man who's smoked way too much), but the majority aren't very good. Right now, I can't see any of them doing justice to such great musicians as Gilby and Tommy and Jason.

Tonights show is a bit of a mixed bag so far, I thought the chick that sang the Hole song absolutely nailed it, but then they ripped on her for screaming the song instead of singing it. She can definitely sing from her performance of that Janis Joplin song, so maybe she was trying to show another side?

It confuses me a bit to what Supernova are looking for...

the ONLY way that Supernova will be successful is if they find a popularly appealing lead singer from this show... even though its technically a "rock star" show... it'll work the same way as American Idol.  Without the right looks and right swagger... this band will go nowhere.

Dilana is my favorite but if the band pick her, they'll go straight into the ground... I'd say same with Patrice Pike and other singers that do look more hardcore.

the guy from knocking will win. the australian, he sang a song from the killers yesterday and he nailed it, he was brilliant, stage presence, everything.

the only one that got nothing but compliments. except for that girl they loved last week, but she wasn't half as interesting i think.

He sang Planet Earth, sounded pretty cool too.
Shame he went, because he was better than half of the other male singers in the comp.

Lukas Rossi is actually a very good technical singer, although it hasn't shone through yet (lotta terrible song selections so far on the show in my opinion) in what he can do vocally. The music biz is already over saturated on the whole image thing...I say we get back to basics and the root? of a great vocalist...a good set of lungs. Dilana has great sounding pipes!

"Rock Star: Supernova" finalist Jenny Galt has told Tara Merrin of the Edmonton Sun that the "Rock Star" contestants are giving a big thumbs-down to SUPERNOVA's debut single.

"A lot of people in the group are skeptical about what kind of music they're playing," says the 29-year-old Montreal-born pop-rocker now based in Vancouver.

"(SUPERNOVA) say they want to do something fresh and new, but then the first track we got to hear, a lot of people were just like, 'Ew. I'm not sure if I like this.'

"It sounded just like that same old, boys rock 'n' roll kind of glam thing they said they weren't going to be doing. It was a bit surprising."

Galt, eliminated from the CBS-TV reality series last week, says the finalists are also questioning SUPERNOVA's commitment to its own future.

She says many contestants feel its members ? Tommy Lee (M?TLEY CR?E's drummer), Jason Newsted (former METALLICA bassist) and Gilby Clarke (former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist) ? are not exactly hellbent on making the new band a success.

"Because Tommy Lee's got M?TLEY CR?E and Jason Newsted's very passionate about (Canadian metal band) VOIVOD, there are a lot of questions as to whether this band is going to really take off. That's up in the air," she says.

"And then, how much commitment do the actual members of SUPERNOVA have?

"There was a lot of chit-chat in the mansion about that."

I find that sad. Its misleading. Gilby only filled ina void for Izzy and he only recorded some parts on The Spaghetti Incident, so he really did nothing creative with Guns N' Roses.

How come they never play GNR songs on the show? I guess the band members give the contestants a list of songs to choose from. I keep expecting a GNR song or a Metallica or Motley Crue song to pop up on there, since those are the bands the three dudes represent. There are a lot of great bands they never plays songs from on that show that I think they should. For instance: Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith. But yet they've played like 3 or 4 Coldplay songs, which I've got nothing against Coldplay, but still, the contestants should be playing real rock n roll.

That's what I don't get either. They keep harping on about song selection being really really important, but they keep giving them crap songs to sing, especially when they want them to be rocking out more. It's very odd.

Dave NAVARRO sits on a throne during "Rock Star: Supernova," CBS' summer school of Reality Rock, entertaining those in "American Idol" withdrawal on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through September. Directing the interactions between the show's contestants and the hard rock supergroup they're vying to front, he's as relaxed on network TV as a half-clothed man with multiple piercings and tattoos could possibly be. He apparently feels just as secure off camera: The show shares a soundstage with "Idol," and Navarro recently mentioned on his blog that he's been using Simon Cowell's temporarily vacant dressing room as his own.

Something must be radiating from the vanity lights, because on recent "Rock Star" episodes Navarro, who co-hosts with model Brooke Burke, is hitting a balance of sarcasm and seriousness that's turning him into the Cowell of the heavy metal set. It's an unlikely fate for a musician who played a key role in the West Coast underground scene that challenged rock norms in the 1980s and led to the invention of rock's "alternative" style ? a term that's now as dated as designer flannel. Navarro's early role in helping reimagine rock glamour as guitarist for Jane's Addiction and, briefly, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is more than a decade past. But this once resolutely exotic creature's ability to establish himself at the center of the rock universe still raises interesting questions about what makes a rock star these days, and how the mainstream and the underground have merged.

"Rock Star" is just one of the projects filling out Navarro's portfolio. The guitarist has been on an upward arc since 2000, when he cleaned up nasty heroin and cocaine habits and traded membership in a single band for frantic multi-tasking. Now, on the verge of launching the Panic Channel, a new group with ex-Jane's Addiction members Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney and singer-songwriter Steve Isaacs, Navarro's living more like a mogul than a guitar-slinging road rat. The Panic Channel's quintessentially modern-rock debut album, "(ONe)," has a couple of songs ? the ballad "Why Cry," the rave-up "Teahouse of the Spirits" ? that could reestablish Navarro as an artist as well as a celebrity. But it's hard to figure how he's going to fit its likely success into his schedule.



Rocker of all trades

The past half-decade has seen Navarro venture into every likely pop field except acting and (this one has to be coming) fashion design. He published "Don't Try This at Home," a disturbingly frank account of his drug struggles, co-written with Neil Strauss, and released a moody solo album, "Trust No One," chronicling the same period; he's played "Jingle Bells" Hendrix-style in a Gap ad and performed with artists as disparate as Christina Aguilera, Jay Z, Michael Jackson and his "Supernova" buddy Tommy Lee. Like all Hollywood entrepreneurs, Navarro's also invested in a nightspot ? Rokbar, in partnership with Lee ? and played celebrity poker. His all-star cover band, Camp Freddy, still draws a crowd, and plenty of famous guest vocalists after five years.

On those few nights he spends at home, Navarro hosts an Internet radio broadcast, Spread Radio Live, linked to , his friendly, smart and frequently updated blog. And most famously, his (currently dissolving) marriage to fellow pop star-of-all-trades Carmen Electra was chronicled in the cuddly 2003 MTV reality show "Til Death Do Us Part," which showed America that a guy who wears fishnet shirts and digs porn can write his own vows and cry when saying them, helped him cultivate the accessible aura he projects on "Rock Star."

Sobriety often makes its lucky recipients very energetic, so Navarro's spurt of activity isn't that surprising. It's his all-around success that speaks volumes about the current rock zeitgeist. When he first gained national fame with Jane's Addiction in the late 1980s, the Santa Monica native was a shaggy-haired half-goth, half-hippie kid whose style bridged Led Zeppelin and the Cure. In those days, such differences mattered: Jane's Addiction posed a major challenge to the genre-bound ideas that had overtaken rock, filtering heavy metal through post-punk experimentalism, all in service of a sensibility that was pure Southern California freak. Perry Farrell, the band's singer and self-taught prophet, surrounded the band's gutter anthems in a swirl of lyrical references that connected it to the most exciting undergrounds of the time: the neo-psychedelia that would result in the desert happening Burning Man, the surf-and-skateboard culture of Venice Beach and beyond, and the proudly kinky eroticism of the "techno-shamanistic" subculture known as "Modern Primitive."

Jane's Addiction, which Rhino Records will honor with a retrospective set in September, challenged the bimbos-and-beer conservatism that had crept into hard rock in the '80s and put forth a vision of what rock might be if it were artistically riskier, but still arena-level ambitious. Its speculations ? and the festival, Lollapalooza, that Farrell and the band founded 15 years ago ? helped turned punk into alternative and set the stage for 1990s titans Nirvana and Pearl Jam. And as Jane's Addiction developed, so did Navarro ? his guitar playing getting more adventurous, his personal style blossoming as he became a symbol of Modern Primitive sexiness.

In the 1990s, Navarro's path paralleled that of alternative rock, whose amorphousness made it a gateway for anything considered too weird for the mainstream. His brief stint in the Chili Peppers typified his midcareer persona. "One Hot Minute," the only Chili Peppers album upon which Navarro appears, marked a new sense of exploration for the band, featuring a dreamier, more pensive sound.

Though the album did well on the charts, many thought it a dangerous detour ? and that wariness was fed by the video for the single "Warped," in which Navarro and singer Anthony Kiedis shared a soul kiss that some fans found unsettling. He ultimately couldn't fit into this quintessentially frat-boy band and left because of "artistic differences" and his worsening drug habit. He sank into rock's background.

It's strange synchronicity that during Navarro's dark period, "alternative rock" also headed into crisis. Kurt Cobain was several years dead and the other bands that had shifted the mainstream began to fall into disarray. Soundgarden disbanded, then Rage Against the Machine, Hole and Smashing Pumpkins. Britney Spears and the boy bands took over the charts, and hip-hop became the new source of "weird" ideas for the mainstream. Lollapalooza took a six-year hiatus; Farrell's attempt to organize a new festival, Enit, failed; and the Jane's Addiction 2002 reunion tour felt like a really great nostalgia trip.

As rock moved from the center of the pop cosmos to a more balanced position as one of many galaxies, a new kind of rock star was needed ? one who wouldn't cling too heavily to any one set of artistic or even moral preferences, instead embodying a flexibility that suited the new, multi-platform musical marketplace. This rock star would need to display a strong personal style and sense of integrity ? rock still being the territory where people act out their fantasies of nonconformity and rebellion ? but he'd have to be cool with sharing, across musical genres and theoretical divides. The underground mantra "no sellout" gave way to the Internet's constant chances to "hook up" (not to mention hip-hop's mandate to be a money-making "baller"), and rock's surviving kingpins would need to frankly enjoy their encounters with the mainstream, while still retaining that freaky aura that has always infused the genre.

Star for a new galaxy

That's Navarro. A clean-living fitness nut who appreciates a lap dance but likes it even better when he can share it with his wife (or so we believed until a couple of weeks ago, when the two "best friends" split), he has turned the rock lifestyle into something sustainable and surprisingly healthy. Next to his fellow "Supernova" judges, he's the sexiest, with the most open-minded attitude. Tommy Lee is old-school, a panting puppy with a good heart but not a lot of savvy. Guitarist Gilby Clarke seems like the nice married dad that he is, while bassist Jason Newsted appears to be trying to engage in the therapy he avoided by quitting Metallica before the band famously hit the couch ? together.

Navarro, by comparison, comes off like a made-for-TV golden god: funny, reasoned, jovially lascivious toward the women and paternally tough on the men ? this is still rock, after all, and mostly a man's world ? but ultimately in control of his wagging tongue. Navarro has principles, fairly standard ones: be original, show passion, let go and get wild. But he knows that each of the contestants will realize these goals differently. He's not afraid to encourage them to be weird and commercial. And his advice resonates across the board.

Having jammed with many of hip-hop's biggest players and goth and punk's most illustrious pioneers ? not to mention the King of Pop ? Navarro gets that rock will not survive as the separate sphere its stalwarts pretended it was back when "alternative," that corrupting idea, challenged its solidifying traditions. He's even been showing a bit more of his Latino roots, which never fit in very well in his previous guises, by bonding ever so cautiously with "Rock Star's" most intriguing contestant, the Puerto Rican punk chanteuse Zayra Alvarez. (I hope he produces her record!)

Navarro's embodiment of the commercial rock aesthetic shows the kind of range and humility the genre needs right now. If he actually played in Supernova, the group would probably be able to consider a wider array of potential singers. And it would definitely be a better band.

dunno if anyone watched it tonight, but zyeda got the boot finally.  she just didn't fit the band.

i actually like lukas.  he shares some characteristics with axl imo.  hes different, he has a crazy voice thats all over the place, and hes cocky.  sounds pretty similar to a 1986 axl.  i like toby and magne too, and i agree that, though the women are good, none of them fit with the band.  they honestly would all be successful in other bands though (those that are left that is).   im hooked on the show though.

The three members of Orange County, California, punk band SUPERNOVA have filed suit against the creators and participants of the reality show Rock Star: Supernova for stealing their name.? The suit claims that Rock Star: Supernova willfully ignored requests by the band not to use the name for its TV supergroup, which features GILBY CLARKE, TOMMY LEE, and JASON NEWSTED.? Supernova bassist ART MITCHELL told MTV.com that his band has no intention of being mistaken with a bunch of "washed-up metalheads."

AOL Music News reports: As the second season of "Rock Star: Supernova" heats up, co-host Dave Navarro has promised to bring some additional opinions in the form of guest judges. The musician he's most psyched about having?

"I'm really excited about having Rob Zombie on," Navarro tells AOL Music. "I don't know if a lot of people that aren't fans of Rob's are aware just how brilliant that guy is. He's super-smart, strongly opinionated and knows a lot about entertainment and art, and having the two meet."

I don't know about you guys, but that song they played with Dilana sucked.  Not that I was expecting something great from those three, but it sounded really weak.  Maybe Guilby is good enough to play lead, but they still need a 2nd guitar.  But I guess Tommy doesn't like two guitarists...

My final thoughts are: Supernova picked one of the worst out of a pretty ordinary bunch.

My favourites were Storm and Toby, they can both sing well and are good stage performers, but everything about Lukas just screams try-hard poseur, and I don't think he has a strong rock voice at all.
Jason Newsted commented about him constricting his voice and I've heard him singing in that style in nearly every performance he's done.

But I guess I should thank Supernova for picking a dodgy singer to save me spending my money on them. Because I definitely won't be buying their album or going to see them live with Lukas fronting the band.

They should have been named SuperDiva Popstar. Full of shit. Neither of them could sing any GNR song except for Don't Cry. Metallica and metal is just another story... Singing Nirvana badly and nearly crying Coldplay covers don't make someone with bad make-up suddenly a rockstar.
