Title: Was This I Love played in this concert?
Post by: andypa1 on March 15, 2006, 07:08:16 PM
Ok i acquired a bootleg album through the net, called chinese democracy (live and demo). It sounds like all one concert, but  each track fades out.

Anywho one track titled piano solo. is axl playing piano. He starts singing "you are an asshole and everyone knows it..." then changes tempo and plays a piano intro to something. It sounds huge!! like an intro to another epic, i feel the emotion building and expect the lyrics to kick in but it doesnt Its how i imagine This i love to be. Lasts about 1min 20 then fades out. iv searched the forum for ages but nothing, so sorry if been poted already. But i would appreciate it if someone had info on this song. ? I know during the UYI tour alot of songs were covered as instrumental versions, e.g. Godfather and only women bleed so maybe this was just something like that.

Ideas?

Axl used to play a really long intro to November Rain in the UYI days, maybe it's that one.  I don't know if it was a cover or anything, or just improvised.  In parts, it sounded a little like the intro to Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull

well i guess neither of us know smith. but you can only disprove it if you know it is a cover. nah its not the long November rain intro but similar style

He does a piano intro to November Rain on my Albany NY 02 DVD after the Asshole song and it sounds beautiful. I'm sure a little bit of it is actually used in Catcher in The Rye and the rest of it could be from another unreleased song.

I don't think it's from a GNR song, it sounds like chopin or any classical piano song for that matter.  i think axl was just playing around on the piano

it's mostly lifted from a buckethead song on one of his softer/ballad type solo albums. *coff coff*

I'm not sure, but it'd be great if they started playing "It's Alright" before November Rain.  I'm probably one of about 50 GNR fans who know that's a Sabbath tune.

Actually they should stop playing November Rain... They should play SCOM, WTTJ, Paradise City, and like 3 more old songs, that?s all

I KNOW exactly what part you are talkin about. And yes I have a strong feeling it is THIS I LOVE.   For the others implying the intro to novemberr rain ITS A DIFFERENT ONE! In the 02 tour never he played the same intro from LIVE ERA DISC.

^no, it was an intro to november rain, the ass hole song then the piano thing then november rain.  the piano thing was played mainly around the boston dates.

the its alright intro was in the UYI tours

well the "intro" to november rain MIGHT be another song. No body else knows the riff...atleast we knew the other riffs what they were of.

Well when you think of it, a lot of songs from UYI were played and experimented with live in the late 80s, so it's quite possible that any instrumental that Axl plays and likes live could end up becoming a song on a new album.  It's probable that what you heard is something from a new song Axl was experimenting with and looking to garner a reaction from fans to gauge if he should pursue it further and put it on an album.

I think the music was part of a legitimate new song that Axl was working on... and who knows... could be "This I Love".... the lyrics on the other hand strike me as Axl just fucking around... didn't he play that around the time he was making Conan O'Brein jokes during the MSG show????

Maybe this is "This I Love" just a different section of the song.

You can only hear bits of it, it's from the makin' if Estranged, just basic Slash playing guitar over people talking and you can hear Axl whistling at the end:

http://rapidshare.de/files/15630995/09-guns_n_roses-unreleased_song_from_making_of_estranged-ksi.mp3.html

Or it could just be another song, but at that time the whole band didn't have many songs that both they and Axl knew, so who knows what song this could of ended up being.

Axl just played it for laughs, which worked well in the moment, but it was just a joke. He probably made it up on the spot or earlier that night.

I know the piano piece you are talking about, it was also played during the intro to Nov. Rain at the last show of the tour at MSG.  It definetly sounded like a promising ballad song.  It also reminded me of the song October from U2.  Hopefully we will find out soon, if it was a new song or just a cover.   :-\

guys, like I said earlier, that piano section you keep refeering to sounds like typical classical piano music.  download some chopin or something like that and you will see what I mean.

Axl isn't a piano virtuoso and I really doubt he wrote the intro to "this love" in classical style.  It's more likely that he's 'showing off' to the crowd.  You'll also notice he plays some of it, stops for audience response, plays more, stops, so on and so on

he's just playing some music he knows (no i don't know what it is), it's not the intro to "this i love"

Title: Re: Was This I Love played in this concert?
Post by: St_Jimmyuk on March 16, 2006, 07:22:30 PM
if he was playing the intro to a new song, don't you think he would make it known, for all the other live songs he starts by saying something along the lines of "this is a new song"

Title: Re: Was This I Love played in this concert?
Post by: Backslash on March 16, 2006, 07:33:48 PM
My fear is that Axl is just messing around with a few piano licks on that bootleg, and he found something he liked, and decided to record it on an album... why do I fear this? because people will say "I told you so" and shit after it's released.

The classical sounding intro to November Rain from the 2002 tour could be part of a new song they were working on, perhaps This I Love.  I hope it is, that intro was very cool and epic sounding.

The part he plays after the asshole song and those fast parts when he pauses and looks at the crowd, but before the actual NR music starts is what I'm referring to

Title: Re: Was This I Love played in this concert?

After listening to it.... it could well indeed be part of a new song, or it could be (as nambis said) some piece of classical music or something Axl was just messing around with; we haven't sufficient reason to believe one theory over another.

Peace. :)

Nice try that's a jimmy buffet tune and these are the lyrics

Quote
Well I was drivin' down I-95 the other night.
Somebody nearly cut me right off the road.
I decided it wasn't gonna do any good to get mad.
So I wrote a song about him instead.
It goes like this...

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
'cause you're an asshole tonight.

Yes you're an A S S H O L E...
And don't you try to blame it on me.
You deserve all the credit.
You're an asshole tonight.

You were an asshole yesterday.
You're an asshole tonight.
And I've got a feelin'
you'll be an asshole the rest of your life.

And I was talkin' to your mother
just the other night.
I told her I thought you were an asshole.
She said, "Yes. I think you're right."

And all your friends are assholes
'cause you've known them your whole life.
And somebody told me
you've got an asshole for a wife.

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
'cause you're an aaaass...hole tonight.

not the same lyrics as axl sung

Yeah songs can have the same title but be different.  An example?  Look at Dust in the Wind.  Guns N' Roses covered Todd Rundgren's Dust in the Wind.  Meanwhile, Kansas has a song called Dust in the Wind that is far far far more popular.  There are also like 300 songs called Heartbreaker.

Cool song ;D

Jimmy Buffet is a country singer

Axl's lyrics are:

"you are an asshole and everyone knows it. how much of an asshole nobody can say. but when you're an Asshole.....oh sorry wrong song!" : ok:

thats it. he played it at like every show in 2001-2002 so i doubt he'd sing it incorrectly the same way every time ::)

Jimmy Buffet is not country at all.  In fact, there is really know group you can put buffet in.   Its all feel good island/beach music.  So many classic songs.  Margaritaville is probably his biggest hit.  Alot of his songs are folky kind of like James Taylor, but better.  Nothing better then drinking some cold ones in the spring listening to Buffet.

Maybe this was the song he was singing but didn?t remember the lyrics correctly?!?!
What is JIMMY BUFFET TUNE...i thought it was Ralph Gean?s The Asshole song?
Thank you for information anyway!
Cool song ;D

Jimmy Buffet is a country singer

Axl's lyrics are:

"you are an asshole and everyone knows it. how much of an asshole nobody can say. but when you're an Asshole.....oh sorry wrong song!" : ok:

thats it. he played it at like every show in 2001-2002 so i doubt he'd sing it incorrectly the same way every time ::)

er.. you are all missing the point here guys, he starts singing about assholes then stops oops wrong song. Then starts a completely new piano song with different rythm and tune. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT so maybe the first bit is the asshole song but that sounds crap its the bit i like after that

Axl played some fantastic piano intros... both during the UYI tour and the 2002 tour.
I think the one from Oklahoma 1992 is one of the best. Hope it's part of a real song.
