Some people seem to have the misconception that the more posts they have, the bigger the chance they'll be made moderators....

Unfortunately for them, post count has very little to do with who becomes a moderator.

Yeah, it doesn't take long for post counts to rise. I actually liked it more back when I was in the 300-500 range. I had pretty much the same ideas and my opinions havent really changed since then, but now there is certain people here that despise me, and some have been cyber stalking me for about a year. Plus the constant insults towards me gets tiresome. Back then I didnt have that. I guess after you make it to a certain post count, you become "infamous" in some way. I dont know. Its strange. Pulling all nighters at this site is a big reason for my high post count. I work odd hours, and when I get home late at night, if no one is coming over, I pretty much just surf the net all fucking night. Most of that surfing is done here. Who thinks that? I talk with most of the "post whores" and I have never heard any of them say anything to me about any desires to up their post counts to be a mod.

Yeah, I see what you mean. But I think that started when there was that "Who should be the next Mod?" thread last year. Alot of people were just picking the high profile posters at the time, who had alot of posts. Remember that me and SLCPunk "won" that little poll, but neither one of us is post whores because we are desperate to be mods.

I said some of it. I remember mentioning how new mods were added here, because we have had a few discussions about mods because its a new site, and we had a couple of very immature mods when the site first started. But him(or one of his goons) added certain things to it to make it sound like that. Someone got access to my account there 2 days ago, and we actually had to go into maintenance mode for a couple hours. I have always used the same password at all forums I go to(including his), and he probably got my password from thenewguns after those people banned me.

I thought someone gained access to my account to try and fuck up the forum or post a bunch of links to the demos. Me and the admin concentrated on those aspects of their little "forum hack". I did not think to go through my older posts to see if they had edited any of my posts. Those newguns guys are a bunch of fucking losers.

Just for the record I never asked to be a mod, or posted often in hopes of becoming one.

I have a high post count on most the forums I post on: this one, two car forums, and mine. I also post on various political websites in hopes of getting a right wing poster so angry that he throws his monitor across the room.

Edit: I did get one email from a poster wondering why "we" did not get picked as mods. It never occured to me that I was in the running, nor (no offense to anybody) did I care if I was or not. I come here to post my rantings daily; hopefully somebody will get a kick out of them. If not, then that only goes to show my wife is right: that I am crazy as a loon.

I didn't mention any names, JamesLofton thinks I was speaking about certain people here but the truth is, the same thing has been happening ever since we were on Ezboard.

Some people expect to be picked and when they're not, they wonder why because they post a lot.

I just figured the X and Y thing was in regards to me and SLC because we won that little mod poll last year. My mistake.

Im not gonna lie, I was kinda curious as to how the mods were chosen and did get curious if i was at least considered but I would never stop posting or start posting more because of it.

Noone can get your password from a forum unless they're hackers (and I'm not even sure if that can happen).

I've banned a couple of people from my forum. It doesn't mean that I can view their password.

There's a bunch of things I look for. How long they've been here is one and obviously it helps if the user in question is somewhat active in the section they're moderating in....

Well, it happened. There is no doubt about that. Maybe the fact that I always used a GNR related password made it easier. Crazy to do that I know, but I never expected someone to ever waste their time doing that kind of shit to me.

Since many people thinks that being a post whore is gonna increase your post number (which is true) I think a best way is to creat a game forum where post doesnt increase, for instance games like say something from the person above you, if you like game, continue the history, what are you listening right now and stuff like that, just a suggest  : ok:

I've seen this on other boards too, but who is to say the persons post would amount to anything in the GnR section? If they post 20 times in one thread claiming Slash is better then BH, how is that any more relevant then any game thread?

just to shed some light on this they were able to figure out james secrete question.. i veiwed my error log and noticed that one particular ip had tried to gain access through james account... no big deal i banned the ip and isp.. i also notified there isp abuse center that that user had been trying to cause harm to my site...

That would mean the person would ahve to know James pretty well. So that counts me out there yet again.  : ok:

On the "who becomes a mod" subject...why would anyone want to?  I'm not bashing the people who do it, I'm glad they do and clearly somebody needs to.  But why do it?  What does anyone get out of it besides a headache and being accused of being biased (or worse).  Its not like they get paid.  Is it just to feel good about the title?  I'm curious, people who aren't mods that really want to be, why?  What do you all think is going happen?

ANyone can post 5 words and boost post counts or gab on general talk threads like say something abou the person above you or flirting thread etc,..... For that matter, why do people get so worked up about post counts?  People are always accusing others of trying to boost their post count, saying their posts shouldn't count, etc.  Who cares and why?  Is it a respect thing?

Who the fuck knows... A vr forum I belong to doesn't even have a post count... When I was at mygnr I had many posts and I kept getting pms saying I was trying to boost my post count and this n that bullshit, yet I was posting hundreds of words per post..  I use to get this because I was catching up to the admin and she felt weird because I was getting close.. it was like the more posts you had the closer to admin you were going to be... :hihi: I think people feel it matters for some stupid fucking reason.... The whole "numer of postings" is ridiculous. You have people who come onto this board  and do a blitz  of meaningless  postings  just  to get numbers  very quickly. I noticed, for  instance, Skynyrd Girl, who in a matter  of 2-3 weeks went from 0 to over  1500. It is just an example, not to pick on the poor girl whose ambition is to be  a porn star.  :rofl:

My point: if postings are to meant to measure  some sort  seniority, it fails  miserably. Alternatives  would be  to consider the time one has been registered, the number  of  words posted,  or some other  measure  that gives credence to longevity and not simply  to frequency, which  as I have suggested  can be  fudged.

Just an idea. But I doubt anything will actually happen.

The only thing I've used it for, is to determine whether a poster who's been breaking the rules should know the rules by now (granted it would be cool if everyone would read them before they started posting).

My theory is that the more posts you have, the less "real life" you have. Sorry if I offended anyone, it  is just a theory. I know that when I get busy I will go weeks without posting. Only when I am between projects or bored do I post. So in reality, the winners are the losers.  :hihi:

If your theory is correct, then you have around 4.75 times a real life then I do........

I think a very accurate way to determine seniority is the total time someone has been logged in, because there is time spent reading the board.

2 days ago someone started a thread in the main gnr section that may or may not have been true, and everyone was defending him because he had been a member since 2004 and he had high 3 digits of posts.  So all you have to do is do a quick check, and here he had been logged in for only a total of 1 day and some hours, and 85% of his posts were in the bad obsession/jungle sections.   I've been logged in reading for a total of over 12 days in that time (and i'm on dial up so it's not like I just leave my computer on to add up time) and since I have less than 200 posts I would have less seniority than him, even though I can tell you everything about GNR that has happened here the past 4 years and can tell you the personality of most board members. 

if you leave your computer open it will not add time because after a few mins of inactivity your time online will not be taken into consideration : ok:
and i don't think a lot of people care so much about their post no. this board is not hostile to newbies unless they make stupid posts/threads without reading the rules
