Title: The Smiths
Post by: grendood on March 14, 2006, 04:02:47 PM
a clueless bellend tried to compare the lyrics of the smiths with guns n roses the other day :nervous:, so I thought id make a thread, lyrically one of the best in the history of music, morrissey's painful insecure singing backed by the ultra cool, confident thundering guitars of johhny marr, what a deadly fucking combination, one of the best bands ever man!

favourite album? favourite song?

The Queen Is Dead : ok: : ok: : ok:

"So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : I know you, and you cannot sing
I said : that?s nothing - you should hear me play piano"

no my happy chubby friend, they are not.

the smiths are probably in my top 50 favourite bands.

have you never heard of them?   :nervous: :nervous:

 : ok:
The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group were indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope was far broader than that of a revivalist band. The group's core members, vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, were obsessive rock fans inspired by the D.I.Y. ethics of punk, but they also had a fondness for girl groups, pop, and rockabilly. Morrissey and Marr also represented one of the strangest teams of collaborators in rock history. Marr was the rock traditionalist, looking like an elegant version of Keith Richards during the Smiths' heyday, and meticulously layering his guitar tracks in the studio. Morrissey, on the other hand, broke from rock tradition by singing in a keening, self-absorbed croon, embracing the forlorn, romantic poetry of Oscar Wilde, publicly declaring his celibacy, performing with a pocketful of gladiolas and a hearing aid, and making no secret of his disgust for most of his peers. While it eventually led to the Smiths' early demise, the friction between Morrissey and Marr resulted in a flurry of singles and albums over the course of three years that provided the blueprint for British guitar rock in the following decade.

What's the deal between Morissey and Robert Smith? I know they don't like each other but why?  I love the Cure but never got into the Smiths. Most of the time I read about bands I like but with The Cure I've never felt compelled to read about them, almost as if knowing too much would ruin it for me. The Cure's music is drug like with amazing highs and lows, joy and sadness. The stuff I have read about the Cure there always seems to be a refrence to the Smiths in some form or another but they really aren't all that the same. maybe the mood of Robert Smith's and Morissey's lyrics but even then... I don't know.  From the small amount I've heard I like Morrisey's solo stuff better than The Smiths. I shoud check them out a bit more.

Im sure its nothing but a harmless rivalry, theres definitely a lot of similarity between the two bands, although id say the smiths are more rock n roll.

Id say they are the two definitive indie bands of the 80's.

They bore me too. But I have to admit that their lyrics are ingenious.

I rather read their lyrics, than listen to music..

Fave song: Girlfriend In A Coma

How soon Is Now, one of the best tunes ever : ok:

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Oh, of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
Well, when exactly do you mean ?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

The smiths are one of my favourite bands.
A few of my favourite smiths songs are:

There is a Light That Never Goes Out - from 'the queen is dead'
Hand In Glove - from 'the smiths'
The Headmaster Ritual- from 'meat is murder'

I can't decide on a favourite album to be honest.
Morrissey has a new album out next month.
