Title: Rate Axl's vocals + comments
Post by: ShotgunBlues1978 on February 18, 2006, 02:52:28 AM
One of the best things about these new songs is Axl's vocal melodies and his lyrics.  The lyrics in TWAT are some of the best lyrics I've heard in a long time, and his vocals and vocal melodies are impeccable.  On all these new songs, the lyrics are strong and the vocal melodies are great.  I still can't get over how good he sounds on TWAT, just everything about the way he sings that and the lyrics in the song,  :o

I actually find Axl to be very hit or miss on lyrics. He is either brilliant with them (TWAT,BLUES,Maddy) or retarded (IRS,OMG and CD). I worry about that for CD as a whole because it appears he struggles on lyrics that don't have something to do with him being in personal pain of some kind. An album can only have so many ballads.

I agree with Napuis, Axl's lyrics are usually hit or miss.  He's come up with some amazing lyrics, but he's dropped the ball on a few songs too - not to mention all the help he's had with some of his songs.

The lyrics on every new song we've gotten so far have been great.  I don't think we really need to worry about it.

Axl's really on the top of his game with some of these new songs.  I can't wait to hear the rest!

Everyone knows Axl can right the best ballads ever.

But can he write a great rock track without Izzy?

The new rock tracks just arent that good except for Riyadh

I personally have not heard the leaks because I want to wait until the album comes out. But with regards to the Axl's lyrics. Yes the man is a genius and his lyrics are some of the best I have ever heard in my life. Genius is not  word to use lightly but Axl would certainly fit into that category for me. Anyone who rights lyrics to songs like Estranged and Breakdown gains a pass into the genius category! Mike

Title: Rate Axl's vocals on the new tracks

I'm not talking about the lyrics, I'm talking about how he sounds.  I think he sounds great on IRS and Better, he sounds like the old Axl with the raspiness, especially Better.  I think he sounds awesome on TWAT, it's the cleaner vocal style he used in the 2002 shows but he sounds just that, clean, and has a lot of power behind the vocals and hits the high notes perfectly.  On CITR, he sings in the cleaner style, and his voice sounds good, but not as full and clear as it does on TWAT.

It seems like CITR was recorded earlier than the others, due to the lack of the distinct Buckethead guitarwork, in fact I don't think Buckethead's on the CITR we've heard.  Perhaps Axl was still working on his new vocal style before recording CITR?

I mostly agree.  CITR, great vocal melodies but his vocals themselves are not as good as they are on the other songs.  I chalk this up to him not perfecting his new, clean vocal style so nicely showcased on TWAT  :smoking:

Compared to how his voice used to be, all the new songs pale in comparison.

I guess his voice is probably best on "Better", he still has sort of the trademark "Axl sound".

His vocals on I.R.S are just painfully bad.. They make my ears bleed. Especially during the chorus.

If I'm going to compare the new songs just against each other and not with old material, I guess TWAT is also good. His voice sounds better than on any new song aside from Better.

His voice is shot from all the smoking and drinking he's done over the years, and I really don't like how it sounds. It's like a mix of Robert Plant and the old Axl, but without some of the distinguishable qualities that made both of them great. He clearly knows this too, because his voice is pushed way back in the mix of all the demos we've heard so far.

@ ZRO

i somewhat agree but i dont believe that irs is that bad. he still has a little grit and his range is absolutely tremendous

Axl's voice sounds best in There Was A Time, but the long scream in IRS it's out of this planet!
I think axl sounds worst in Catcher In The Rye, but it still is a fantastic track.

I think he sounds the best on CITR

I think he sounds the most unique. I hear voice effects, lots of layering, but I rate his voice on there pretty high, then twat, then better then irs (not a fav of mine either)

Cather In The Rye is the best song as of yet in my opinion! Great melodies, great guitar playing, great piano part at 1:42 till 1:47 (hard to hear but it's awesome) and the breakdown after it........wow.........and not forget the truly great lyrics to go with it. Way better then TWAT (which still is great to me! )......It's up there with Better and Madagascar as my favorites at the moment!
