Title: Robert John's "Guns N' Roses- The Photographic History"
Post by: Sam on February 28, 2006, 04:51:50 PM
I think its a great compilation of photos.  It only has pics from before 1992, but they're good pics, some very early pics, and a nice forward by Axl. Your opinions?

Crazy. Not 5 minutes I went & dug this out because I am trying to post the photo of GNR after they had opened for the RHCP's in 1986. Anyways, I found my copy in the foyer of a Barnes & Nobles bookstore about three years ago & paid $1.99 for it! The price reduction sticker is still on the cover. It's a real nice book.

A great book. If you can find it, you should get it. I always wondered about one of the photos. The pages aren't numbered, so I can't tell you what page, but it's about half way through the book and the caption reads.."Axl during the recording of Use your Illusion 1&2 at the record plant in Hollywood, 1990. Axl would eventually set up camp and move into the studio."

Now my question is, is that what I think it is on the Billboard magazine? If so, that's a damn big bud.

Also, later about 20 pages or so, There's a 2-page spread with the caption.."Live at the Ritz, New York City. The back of the t-shirts for these warm-up shows declared, "Here Today, Gone To Hell."

I got this book from an Amazon merchant for around $45, worth every penny! Unfortunately it was raining the day it arrived and wasn't packaged well, so the first few pages are a little rippled. I think there are a few copies left on Amazon for anyone who's thinking of buying it. eBay might have some too.

this is a great photographic history.  i bought a friend a copy from ebay, pretty good price if you are thinking of tracking it down try there.

why did axl and robert fall out.  it's a shame as he took some great photos then - wonder what more he's got of the more recent years...

Yeap, I think it's marijuaaaanaaaaaaaa!!!. I read somewhere that Axl used to smoke it to relax and concentrate during the endless recording sessions of those records. I think it was in R.I.P magazine, 1992, loooong time ago.

It's a great photo book, but I would have prefered more text below the pics, more anecdotes.

One of my favorites; Axl at his childhood playground in Indiana with the trees he and his family planted when he was only a "small town white child".  :smoking:

I am not exactly sure, but Robert was with them at The Joint shows in Vegas at the end of 2001. I saw him taking pics.

i actually was emailing robert john a few years ago. i found his website because i was trying to get hold of a photo i loved in the book (Manheim, Germany - great photo taken from back of the stage with the whole crowd in shot). there was an email address which i sent to and he got back to me and gave me his personal email address. i asked about whether he still saw Axl but he said he didnt see him anymore but was still in touch with the other guys.

I had saw him interviewed later, he said the name was familiar but looking up onstage was so weird for him after knowing the old guns..
