I'm a huge fan of comedy on TV and just wondered if i'm missing any gems.

i think especially Curb your enthusiasm is so well written, and anyone who thinks the office created cringe television . . . YOU ARE WRONG

Married... with children :yes: ?That was pure gold, there wasn't a single bad episode. My all time favourite TV show.

I have pre ordered American Dad and have heard its really funny. I've seen some of my name is earl and think its funny . . . . but i find it a little repetitive and only has one angle really. Futurama is great too i have them all.

I love comedy that is really well written. I think Larry David (Seinfeld and Curb) and Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) are just genius and anyone who hasn't really listened to the words in between the funny moments you are really missing out.

I think Curb Your Enthusiasm is a very underated show. ?

So underated its untrue.

I heard that HBO isn't sure whether to bring it back or not. I really hope they do. It needs to be allowed to keep growing and then i think we will have an all time classic on our hands.

Curb isn't underated at all. By underrated, you mean not in the spotlight of the mainstream...It sure as hell ain't no Friends. Which is a good thing. It really isn't for everybody, not by any stretch of the imagination. It's dry comedy. Even more, it's dry American comedy. That's one of the chief reason that they don't get a lot of our stuff.

Curb Your Enthusiasm gets praise from everywhere that it deserves to. The day that a Curb series is universaly applauded will be the day that it sells out it's principles and will be a pretty shitty series.

It ain't for the general consencus. And thank fuck for that!

1a is Fawlty Towers. The absolutely best sitcom ever as far as I'm concerned

There weren't many episodes but everyone was a classic and it's one of the very few that cannot be accused of going on for too long.

Instead it left people wanting more and that's the way it should be....

Aye, but not too many British shows can. I mean, a lot of really popular British comedy have less shows in their entire run than the American shows do in one season.

Bottom (18 episodes), The Young Ones (12) (which both have the best endings to a last episode ever!), Alan Partridge (18), The Office (14), The Day Today (6), Brass Eye (5/6), Father Ted (though not British...About 21, I think...). The list goes on.

Even the seemingly long running Red Dwarf (a classic, I can't believe I missed it out!) only did has only done so far...about 52 episodes. Not much more than a two season run over in the States.

Those numbers are off the top of my head, appologies for any innacuracies....

Is that simply because the americans have more ideas?

I mean we have series that average 6-8 episodes, where as the americans seem to have round about 24.

One example would be, the first series of Frasier (An awesome series...) has the same number of episodes of Red Dwarf Series 1-4 (Another awesome series....)

I'd say it has more to be with the influence over our comedy, actually.

People like Rik Mayal and Ben Elton, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais. None of them ended the shows because they were running out of ideas. They just didn't want it to get stale, they wanted to do something different.

In America it's more corporate, I mean didn't Friends have like 10 writers..........

It's less personal; the focus isn't on the writer, it seems to be more on the company.

The emphasis seems to be more on the marketing potential (the amount of money that the cast of Friends were paid towards the end was ridiculous) than the material; while the material can still be really good (as you said, Fraiser, Seinfeld both had long runs with fantastic episodes), the need, or the necesity, for British writers to continue a series doesn't seem so pressured.

CS Lewis said that it's better to stop while people asking for more, than to continue until they're bored. To me that seems to be a very British philosophy. America's seems to be bleed it dry.....

Don't get me wrong, I don't see anything wrong with long running seasons. I think that it's just a difference in attitude and culture.

Yep, it's like the long in the making Red Dwarf film.

Filming hasn't even started yet since they haven't been able to get funding.

They tried to get it from America, but they only offered if the cast was completely changed, they wanted big name stars.  And obviously they told 'em where to go because it would of sucked but rather than look at the quality of the existing show and the fanbase they just decided that the only way this would sell well is if they had extremely well known actors.

I think on the DVD for one of the series they mentioned the suggestion given to them by the americans of getting Hugh Grant to play Lister ::)

The whole Red Dwarf movie thing sucks, it would rule!

I read this essay on everything that they have tried to do to get the movie made since the beggining. The crew have really been fucked over.

If I get rich in the next year,

I'll fund the damn movie!

Or, if I become a movie director, I'll direct it for free. Well, not free.............Fucking union. (It does apply to directors, doesn't it......)

Though, by that time, the core cast will probably be pushing 60........

I will expect a cameo if you do get involved with the project....

It would be a hell of a lot easier if they'd of just done another series.

I'd love another season. I was one of the people that thought season 8 was fantastic! A whole hell of a lot better than seasons 5-7 (which I was still a fan of).

It was better than 7 and possibly 6, those 2 weren't as enjoyable for me.  5 though was my fave, i thought that was perfection!

You may be right, actually. I'd probably put 5 and 8 as about the same.

The Inquisitor, Demons and Angles and Back to Reality (I just grabbed the DVD to check...) are three of my favourite episodes in the entire run!

They were all good.  Holoship was a great opening episode....

Never saw Girlfriends, but then I missed a couple of  decades of TV while in school.

Scrubs is one of my favorite shows.  I love the fact that it can have you laughing one second and fighting back tears the next. 

I haven't been able to get into the office.  I've tried watching a couple times, and it seems like something I should like, but I'm just not finding it very funny.

I'm 30. I used to watch Mister Ed every morning before school in 5th grade. Ocassionally, Nickelodeon brings it back and plays it for awhile before taking it off. I haven't seen it in about 5 or 6 years. Gomer Pyle is one of the funniest shows ever made. Back when I was a heavy drug user, I always made sure to save at least one joint to watch Gomer Pyle. Newhart was great also. That episode where the town thinks Bob killed his wife is hilarious.

It's new and seems to be funny. I've only watched 1 episode, cos it's not being broadcasted here yet.

I never seen it. But I've seen it advertised. I dont watch much tv anymore. When I do, its usually Law and Order or CSI, or a documentary.

Take out Friends and Simpsons and add The Office and Arrested Devlopment.

May I put forward the excellent Arrested Development.  Normally American comedies suck ass (unless they're cartoons  for some reason) but this is one of my all-time faves.  Right up there with the Blackadders (but not quite that good).  Just great storylines, great characters, superb scripts, great actors, great commentary.  Everything's about as good as you'll get for this kind of programme.  I can't believe it got stopped, apparently in favour of some more reality tv bollocks due to ratings  :rant:  "come on!"  :hihi:

Arrested Development should go down in history as a classic.

Sorry to resurrect a really old thread, but watching a few of my fav comedy shows (unfortunately no longer aired) on YouTube, I'm surprised no one mentioned these comedy shows:

Whose Line Is It Anyway? - The UK version (original) is very good but the U.S version was even funnier. Don't know why it got cancelled, since it was a low budget show. It was the best improv comedy show on TV and probably the most funniest show ever.

Mind Your Language - Another really old UK show, extremely funny, especially the racial stereotyping. (Watch EP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1mjR-Cfs10)

Among the ones still on TV, Two And A Half Men is the only one I find really funny.

The Young One's was a great show, as was Father Ted (3 seasons, 24 shows not including Xmas specials). Alan Partridge is legendary. The Office is over rated a little. Brass Eye was hit and miss. Red Dwarf was good in the early years.

Modern Family is my new favorite!  ;D
