Rumored to be a Drum Machine

Yo, the UYI demos were similar in that regard if I'm not mistaken.  No worries here, we'll hear Brain.   ;)

That shows you how old these demos are. The drums are almost non existant on IRS-which is a great song for some skin pounding-alot of drum machine stuff on these tracks.

Yeah, something is definitely missing.  Surely it wont be like that on the final album. But its always possible. Remember how Jason Newsted's bass was basically non existent on Justice? Hopefully the same thing dont happen to Brain.

This isn't anything to worry about. Its only a demo...

Last time I checked.. almost all of the old GNR demos had drum machines.

And.. (im not sure.. but it was this way with the way my friend got his album recorded)... aren't most studio scratches with drum machines anyways? I think drums are usually put in near last. Is this true...?

Either way im not worried

I don't think they are drums machines. I mean, in TWAT they are way more noticeble.

But the mix is poor on the demos, so I guess that's why the drums are hard to listen.

scary idea: these aren't demo's....these aren't mastered....they're just what axl has.

you think we got these leaks, at this sound quality, only to have the real deal mastered, fat sounding CD released next month????? no way. i think this might be all axl has....demos of songs....nothing finished in his mind....

scary idea 2: what if axl's like "i dont even want brain here, lets use drum machines for now", and brain hasn't heard these songs much...he kinda seems like a di-k anyway, so maybe axl wouldn't want him around...b/c why would these "leaks" have mostly drum machines? i mean, these demo's dont sound like live drums.....producers can MAKE fake drums sound real.

I was of the opinion it's a drum machine... I don't see a lot of variance between beats... there's no heavy hitting anywhere for lack of a better phrase... just steady, basic stuff throughout. I'm referring mostly to IRS/TWAT since we're missing parts of better, but... I do hope to see some better stuff on final cuts cuz I'm sure Brain is capable of some good shit.

In this interview from 99 axl said, "It's a very diverse record. There's a lot of hip-hop beats, there's straight-ahead rock. But if someone says, "Hip-hop beats," what do you mean by that? Well, Radiohead uses beats that are similar to hip-hop beats. There's actual, "official" hip-hop beats and then there's "Radiohead-style" hip-hop beats, there's rock beats".

He is going to use drum machines on the record, along with live drums. That's what he wants. I think its cool. In that same interview he spoke that the recording process was diferent also. Saying how there would be less reverb, and double bass pedals, cause that was more 80's. SO get used to the new sound guys.

I don't like the drums.  I like the way Sorum's drums sound on Contraband.  I am not comparing, just giving my opinion.

Try not to pass judgement on crapping MP3's. MP3's are damaged music period.

I think so yeah. The drumming is pretty standard drum machine fare until the songs pick up. Then Brain lets loose a bit more.

Hence the Hip style.. Hints at it. Or not but that would be cool. But if anyone could use "hip hop beats" in a song it I like it.. Its that mother fucker.. So it's ok. I guess.

I love Brain's drumming style although I'll admit on these demos that they're not very high up in the mix (although neither are some of Axl's vocals).
I've never really understood why anyone would really be a fan of Matt Sorum's drumming. While IMO He's one of the most consistent and solid drummers around,  he's also one the most boring and un-original sounding drummers I've ever heard in my life. Honestly, aside from his playing on You Could Be Mine and a couple tracks off Contraband, nothing of his really stands out to me.
BTW, maybe it's just me but I laugh almost everytime I see that band photo with him inside the Use Your Illusion I and II booklets. He looks uncomfortable, out of place and pretty damn corny.
Lastly, John Cazale (Rest in peace) was a great actor. Check out his films if you ever get a chance:  The Godfather Parts I and II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter...

Yeah I agree Brain is a cool drummer, and when we do here the new songs, mixed right I think it will be awesome, also Matt was never really a member of GN'R,and I don't think he fit in well anyway,I didn't and don't like him, never have a never will :peace:

couldnt agree more - these songs need some thumping, pounding, hammer of the gods style drums to really get them grooving

I noticed the drums too. Not because I missed them and thought the songs needed more, just that I was really listening the analyzing the music. As many have said they are just demos.. mp3 demos so we'll have to wait and see.

Being as it has already brought up yet again in this thread, I personally am not major fan of Sorum's drumming, I prefer the subtle touch of old school Adler or Brain as heard in the demos, but this isn't the place for that debate.

Some of the drumming on the leaks do sound like drum machines. I have a friend who plays guitar and sings (and once had a record deal) he is always writing new songs, he has a book full of them, some finished and some un finished. My point is, when he makes music he uses a computer set up, plays guitar(s) and sings and the electronic drumming provided by the computer (he makes his own drum patterns up) are simply added for timing purposes. If a record ever came out  then real drums played by a real drummer would be added and give the songs that extra edge.

Sometimes it seems like it's not an actual drummer, like it's a rap-style drumkit machine. Possibly just needs some different mixing and will sound like real drums when they're done with the album.
