Broken glass and cigarettes
writing on the wall
it was a bargain for the summer
and i thought i had it all
i was the one who gave u everything
the one who took the fall
you were the one who would do anything
one who cant recall
wish it was while u were sleeping in a anothers womens bed
or the doctors and the lawyers or the stranger that u met
if theres nothing that i can blame on this or anything at all
it be the lies that u gave me when i thought i had it all

it was a loing time for u
it was a long time for me
it'd be a long time for everyone but looks like its meant to be

I always thought the piano melody that Axl played during the 2002 was in fact TWAT. I can fit the words There was a Time in the meter of that melody.

Here's what I have so far
Edit:? I added more of unoturbo's 2nd verse corrections, although I'm not hearing the line after "sleeping like an angel" so I'm keeping it blank for now
Edit 2:? Put in smeagol's "laws" line, I think it sounds more correct and makes more sense

Broken glass, cigarettes, writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
The one who can't recall
As you watched while he was sleeping in another woman's bed
Call the doctors, call the lawyers, call the stranger that you met
If there's nothing I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me when I thought I'd heard it all

It was a long time for you
It was a long time for me
It'd be a long time for anyone
But looks like it's meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way beyond that stall
To those mock negotiations
To simulate a call
All the bad among the evils
And your ways around the laws
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of fear
And now you're sleeping like an angel
<missing line>
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was the wrong time for you
It was the wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for anyone
But it looks like I'm about to see for myself

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul
There all alone, lonely tear drops
<missing line>
But I don't want to know it now
Cuz knowing you it won't change a damn thing

But there was a time

[solo]

There was a time
Didn't want to know at all
Didn't want to know at all <something>
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know at all
Didn't want to know at all <something>
Don't want to know it now

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

[solo]

There was a time
I would do anything for you

There was a time
Didn't want to know at all
Didn't want to know at all <something>
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know at all
Didn't want to know at all <something>
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know at all
Didn't want to know at all <something>
Don't want to know it now

but i've given up!

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way beyond that stall
To those mock negotiations
To simulate a call
All the bad among the evils
And you wedge around (them all / the walls) ?
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of fear
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Nevermind the wounded head

It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

After being put on high alert yesterday, I think the mods at various forums got the TWAT links faster and therefore fewer people have it.

Brilliant song...

Guns N' Roses - There Was a Time

Broken glass and cigarettes,
writing on the wall,
it was a bargain for the summer,
and I thought I had it all.
I was the one who gave you everything,
the one who took the fall,
you were the one who would do anything,
the one who can't recall.

Wish it was while she was sleeping,
in another woman's bed,
or the darkness or the lawyers,
or a stranger that she met.
If there's one thing I can gain from this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the knowledge that ya gave me,
when I thought I'd heard it all.

It was a long time with you,
it was a long time with me,
it'd be a long time for anyone,
but looks like it's meant to be.

Social class and registers,
cocaine in the hall,
all the way from California,
on the way beyond that stall.
to those non-negotiations,
(to sing it in a call)
all the bad of learning evils and
your ways around the laws
that keep you up and sitting pretty,
on a pedestal of (men)
and now you're sleeping like an angel,
nevermind (who we get in)

If there's something I can make of this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the devil hates a loser and
you thought you had it all.

It was a wrong time for you,
it was a wrong time for me,
it was the wrong time for everyone
but looks like I'm about to see for myself.

If I could go back in time to the place
in my soul, there all alone,
lonely tear drops,
ooh (who?), are calling you.
but I don't wanna know it now,
'cause knowing you won't change a damn thing.
but there was a time.

(Solo)

yeah, there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all and
I don't wanna know it now,

yeah, there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all and
I don't wanna know it now,

(Solo)

Oh, I would do anything for you,
there was a time,
I would do anything for you,
oh, I would do anything for you,
there was a time.

(Solo)

There was a time,
I would do anything for you,
yeah there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all,
and I don't wanna know it now,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all,
and I don't wanna know it now,
(to this love?)
there was a time...

Main set lifted from ItsRDC. Changes made in notepad. The other lyrics where posted after I started with the headphones but there are some I disagree with. This does not mean I think thiers are wrong, simply what I hear. Here's my take on it. Please keep this up guys, we'll get 'em cracked in no time if we work together  ;)

Broken glass and cigarettes

Twat (There Was A Time)

Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
One who can?t recall

To those malnegotiations, to simulate a call
While the battle of medieval, and your ways around the laws
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of fear
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near than man who reaped It
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was the wrong time for you
It was the wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone

mal- is a prefix for "bad."  Negotiations that go bad?  Artistic license there eh?  What a fucking killer song.  It still gives me chills.  I can't wait to have this album in my hands!!!

Personally, I think it might be "night negotiations," ya know, like the kind a certain model girlfriend would have to make before going away for a photo-shoot.  Simulated phone calls, also a nice little reference to the shit people do to avoid people, fake talking to someone on a phone to appear real busy so they don't have to talk.

Just my 2 cents.

Guitar solo is longer and its fantastic!!!

few minor changes

I just changed these two lines

To those non-negotiations, to simulate a call

Malnegotions is not a word

and

Ooh, are calling you

and I dont think its oh oh, I think its oh are...

Twat (There Was A Time)

Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
One who can?t recall
Where she was while she was sleeping
In another?s women?s bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers or the stranger that she met
If there?s nothing that I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me when I thought I'd heard it all

It was a long time for you
It was a long time for me
It?d be a long time for everyone but looks like it?s meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way beyond that stall
To those non-negotiations, to simulate a call
While the battle of medieval, and your ways around the laws
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of fear
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near than man who reaped It
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was the wrong time for you
It was the wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But it looks like I'm 'bout to see for myself

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul
They?re all alone, lonely teardrops
Ooh, are calling you
But I don't want to know it now
Cuz knowing you it won't change a damn thing

But there was a time

[solo]

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

Yeah, There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

[solo]

There was a time
I would do anything for you

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all

Such a  nostalgy-filled moment, right before the guitar solo; the " But there was a tiiiiiiiiiime"with that tiny piano part going in backround. There's something from early 90's GNR for ya:D

Totally, I'm in love with that part - With the piano just about to fade out, and right before the solo kicks in... This song rules so much.  : ok:

I'm hearing:

"There was a time,
to want to know it all,
to want to know it all
and I don't want to know it now"

"To want to know...", not "Didn't want to know...". It changes the meaning completely.

Battle of my demons?

I don't know. But 'the battle of medieval' sounds ridiculous.

Every time I listen to it, I hear "All the bad of learning evils and your ways around the laws..." It makes sense and I just can't really hear some of this other stuff (battle of medieval? ridiculous)...

Guns N' Roses - There Was a Time

Broken glass and cigarettes,
writing on the wall,

If I could go back in time to the place

Ok I slowed the song down and listened to it carefully and I have a few things to add to the discussion

1- I defenitly hear this and not anything else; "Broken glass, and Cigarrettes", besides who knows maybe the broad was fond of breaking glass when she was mad, or something

2- ditto on the "All the bad of learning evils and your ways around the laws..." its what i hear and? it makes sense

3- on "'cause knowing you won't change a damn thing"? I hear this "'cause knowing you, IT won't change a damn thing"

so the way I hear it the lyrics are as follows

Guns N' Roses - There Was a Time

Broken glass and cigarettes,
writing on the wall,
it was a bargain for the summer,
and I thought I had it all.
I was the one who gave you everything,
the one who took the fall,
you were the one who would do anything,
the one who can't recall
where she was while she was sleeping,
in another woman's bed,
or the doctors or the lawyers,
or a stranger that she met.
If there's nothing I can gain from this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the knowledge that ya gave me,
when I thought I'd heard it all.

It was a long time with you,
it was a long time with me,
it'd be a long time for anyone,
but looks like it's meant to be.

Social class and registers,
cocaine in the hall,
all the way from California,
on the way beyond that stall.
to those non-negotiations
to simulate a call,
all the bad of learning evils and
your ways around the laws
that keep you up and sitting pretty,
on a pedestal of men
and now you're sleeping like an angel,
near the man who reaped it in.

If there's something I can make of this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the devil hates a loser and
you thought you had it all.

It was a wrong time for you,
it was a wrong time for me,
it was the wrong time for everyone
but looks like I'm about to see for myself.

If I could go back in time to the place
in my soul, there all alone,
lonely tear drops,
ooh, are calling you.
but I don't wanna know it now,
'cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing.
but there was a time.

yeah, there was a time,

I don't wanna know it now,

yeah, there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,

This is obviously about his breakup with Stephanie Seymour.

You know what that means, right?

Stephanie is a TWAT!

and here are the lyrics for sure i listen to this song once a day and i love it

Broken glass and cigarettes,
Writing on the wall,
It was a bargain for the summer,
And i thought i had it all.
I was the one who gave you everything,
The one who took the fall,
You were the one who would do anything,
The one who can't recall.

Wish it was while she was sleeping,
In another woman's bed,
Or the darkness or the lawyers,
Or a stranger that she met.
If there's one thing i can gain from this,
Or anything at all,
It'd be the knowledge that ya gave me,
When i thought i'd heard it all.

It was a long time with you,
It was a long time with me,
It'd be a long time for anyone,
But looks like it's meant to be.

Social class and registers,
Cocaine in the hall,
All the way from california,
On the way beyond that stall.
To those non-negotiations,
(to sing it in a call)
All the bad of learning evils and
Your ways around the laws
That keep you up and sitting pretty,
On a pedestal of (men)
And now you're sleeping like an angel,
Nevermind (who we get in)

Lonely tear drops,
Ooh (who?), are calling you.
But i don't wanna know it now,

I always understood this to be something along the lines of ....

"To those non-negotiations, to simulate a call
In the battle of good and evil, and your ways around the laws"

Quote
That keep you up and sitting pretty,
On a pedestal of (men)

That's what I hear. It makes sense - she's sleeping like an angel near the man she just got off.

LYRICS FOR TWAT
----------------------
Broken glass and cigarettes,
writing on the wall,
it was a bargain for the summer,
and I thought I had it all.
I was the one who gave you everything,
the one who took the fall,
you were the one who would do anything,
the one who can't recall
where she was while she was sleeping,
in another woman's bed,
or the doctors or the lawyers,
or a stranger that she met.
If there's nothing I can gain from this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the knowledge that ya gave me,
when I thought I'd heard it all.

It was a long time with you,
it was a long time with me,
it'd be a long time for anyone,
but looks like it's meant to be.

Social class and registers,
cocaine in the hall,
all the way from California,
on the way beyond that stall.
to those non-negotiations
to simulate a call,
all the bad of learning evils and
your ways around the laws
that keep you up and sitting pretty,
on a pedestal of men
and now you're sleeping like an angel,
near the man who reaped it in.

If there's something I can make of this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the devil hates a loser and
you thought you'd heard it all.

It was the wrong time for you,
it was the wrong time for me,
it was the wrong time for everyone
but looks like I'm about to see for myself.

If I could go back in time to the place
in my soul, there all alone,
lonely tear drops,
ooh, are calling you.
but I don't wanna know it now,
'cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing.
but there was a time.

(Solo)

yeah, there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all and
I don't wanna know it now,

yeah, there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all and
I don't wanna know it now,

(Solo)

Oh, I would do anything for you,
there was a time,
I would do anything for you,
oh, I would do anything for you,
there was a time.

(Solo)

There was a time,
I would do anything for you,
yeah there was a time,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all,
and I don't wanna know it now,
didn't wanna know it all,
didn't wanna know it all,
and I don't wanna know it now,
(to this love)
There was a time...

Its NOT fear, Axl is obviously singing about court and law battles here and the fact that his BITCH was sitting PRETTY ON A PEDESTAL OF MEN.

I think he is trying to say that she uses men and now she is sitting pretty.

Ok...well i think no-one knows the offical lyrics but Axl but given we're all talking about it, here is what my ears hear when i play the song, but bear in mind i have a dirty mind, too much wiskey, and i've blown my ears out with guitar! I've put in bold my take on the bits we all argue over!

Broken glass and cigarettes,
writing on the wall,
it was a bargain for the summer,
and I thought I had it all.
I was the one who gave you everything,
the one who took the fall,
you were the one who would do anything,
the one who can't recall
where she was while he was sleeping,
in another woman's bed,
or the doctors or the lawyers,
or the stranger that she met.
If there's nothing I can gain from this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the knowledge that ya gave me,
when I thought I'd heard it all.

It was a long time with you,
it was a long time with me,
it'd be a long time for anyone,
but looks like it's meant to be.

Social class and registers,
cocaine in the hall,
all the way from California,
on the way to your next call
to those non-negotiations
to simulate a cause
for the betterment of evils and

your ways around the laws
that keep you up and sitting pretty,
on a pedestal up there
and now you're sleeping like an angel,
nevermind who you gave head
If there's something I can make of this,
or anything at all,
it'd be the devil hates a loser and
you thought you'd heard it all.

---
and i think everyone agress on the other parts from there on, so i wont write it all out, anyway .love to hear if you all think i'm crazy!

its not men its fear that is clear

Its NOT fear, Axl is obviously singing about court and law battles here and the fact that his BITCH was sitting PRETTY ON A PEDESTAL OF MEN.

I think he is trying to say that she uses men and now she is sitting pretty.

Its not men it doesnt even sound like men it sounds like fear or maybe there.
So it could be "pedisital up there"

But the word has a EAR sound not EN.

I just listened again and it is
sittin on a pedistal up there

Twat (There Was A Time)

Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
One who can?t recall
Where she was while he was sleeping
In another?s women?s bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers or the stranger that she met
If there?s nothing that I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me when I thought I'd heard it all

It was a long time for you
It was a long time for me
It?d be a long time for everyone but looks like it?s meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way to your next call
To those non-negotiations, to simulate a call
For the betterment of evils, and your ways around the laws
That'd keep you up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal up there
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near than man who reaped it
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was the wrong time for you
It was the wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But it looks like I'm 'bout to see for myself

(YEP)

If I could go back inside to the place in my soul
They?re all alone, lonely teardrops
Ooh, are calling you
But I don't want to know it now
Cuz knowing you it won't change a damn thing

But there was a time

[solo]

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

Yeah, There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

I would do anything for you
There was a time

[solo]

There was a time
I would do anything for you

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all
And I don't wanna know it now
Don't want to know it now

There was a time
Didn't want to know it all
Didn't want to know it all

It sounds like men to me. Fear doesn't make too much sense. There makes sense. I guess we will never for sure until we get the album booklet. Gorgeous song no matter what. We are all kind of nitpicking it a bit now. I cant wait for the fully mixed version because the ochestra in the background sounds so amazing. I hope they bring it up louder in the finished mix

Maybe someone should run a poll for each disputed line :)

I really do not hear "men", I think it is "of fear" or "up there".

I don't hear "reaped it in" (nor have I heard ANYONE ever use that phrase... not that Axl Rose hasn't invented some great phrases in the past). Same goes for "who you gave head"; I don't hear it and it is ackwardly phrased.

I think it is "weakened it" (the pedastal) or "reeked of it" (fear).

its a pedestal of FEAR.  there is no EN sound, its clearly an EAR sound.  besides, pedestal of men would just sound retarded.  "up and sitting pretty on a pedestal of fear" is an awesome line.

Its FEAR or up there.  I have no doubt.

Yes. It can be "raining men" in someone else's song. That shit is too gay for a GNR song :)

BROKEN PACKS of cigarettes

Nah, 'glass' is right.

Also that "near the man who you gave head" is, well, stupid. It's not an Axl type of line at all, especially in a song like this. And there's definately an 'r'-sound in that line. It's not "reaped it in", either, but that sounds a lot closer. And no, I don't know what that line is, but I guess we'll find out during the next six months or so. I promise to pick up the tab for making of Chinese Democracy if it really is something as juvenile as giving head. I hope  Axl doesn't read this and change the line...

yeah, ya had me before the "gave head" line.  I'd bet my left nad that's not it.  It's such a beautiful song, and as the story moves along, that just doesn't fit.  If she's in bed with these people, head aint all that's goin' on.  ;)

Did I mention how amazing this song is?  Oh yeah, about a hundred times.   :)

Social class and registers,
cocaine in the hall,
all the way from California,
on the way beyond last call
to those non-negotiations
to simulate a call,
all the bad of learning evils and
your ways around the laws
that keep you up and sitting pretty,
on a pedestal up there
and now you're sleeping like an angel,
near the man who reaped it in.

In my opinion, it has to be

where she was while she was sleeping...not HE

And it's simulate a CAUSE, not call, because cause rhymes with laws, it makes more sense to the song, and he says call like 2 lines before, I think it's

"to similate a cause for the betterment of evils and your ways around the laws," which makes both perfect sense songwise and language wise.

I agree with the betterment of evils line...still not sure about the "man who you gave head," although I think I kind of hear "head" at the end of the line...maybe "ahead" or something. So it might actually be the line.

Actually, I kind of disagree with the opinion that the "head" line doesn't fit in the song, because the song seems to be about a woman who does all this crazy shit (S. Seymour I would assume), like cocaine binges, being so out of it she falls asleep in a stranger's house, doesn't remember people she was meeting, lying, stealing, cheating, etc. So, in a way it does kind of fit. Maybe you guys are thinking that it's a little too "vulgar" to be in such a beautiful song, but I actually think it makes perfect sense...and it's not like Axl is afraid to say things like that. And I guess that giving sexual favors for drugs is very common, so I can see Seymour giving some guy head, getting and doing drugs, then passing out next to the guy. So yeah, a teensy vulgar but I don't think it's glaring (what is this, the 50's?), but it fits right in with the song. The more I listen to it, the more I think it's correct.

EDIT: LOL, so I guess I agree with Monkeychow.

Yes...i've been vexed over this...it really sounds like she and i guess overall that makes more sence...i just wanted it to be He so that it could be a song about the way two people fucked up instead of one. LOL. And also to avoid any female bisexual concepts seeing as I was already intoducing the "head" thing later...dont want you all to think i have a dirty mind  :hihi:

Anyway...much as i've said "he" i think i'll have to retract it and go with "she"

Actually, I kind of disagree with the opinion that the "head" line doesn't fit in the song, because the song seems to be about a woman who does all this crazy shit

Yes. To me the second verse is about contridictions, hypocrisy and duality of people's nature. For example, the refrences to social class, registers, and cocaine. By this I mean like, as celebs people are elevated to a higher social level or whatever in terms of exclusive clubs and snobery, yet they are also using cocaine and behaving badly. Its kinda ironic in a way.  Then theres how whomever the woman is, she isn't actually trying to better the world or working for a good cause, she is simply manipulating things to appear to be (or simulate) doing those things. Its about creating a false pubic impression. So she ends up placed on a pedistal "up there" - that is - she is held in high public regard with a squeeky clean immage - and the "sleeping like an angel" also represents this purtity, and Axl is then commenting with perhaps a little sarcasm or bitterness "nevermind who you have head". That is, like, shes created her impression of being a squeeky clean good person, but its come at the private cost that in reality she has acted far from angellicly.
So to me putting such a base refrence in a beautiful song would actually illustrate what i take to be part of the point of the song all the more.

Anyway...i'd like to take a moment here to stress that I might be wrong. Its axl's song not mine, and hell, maybe i'm mishearing all the lyrics anyway. Perhaps its a song about something completely different!
I just wanted to share what i thought i heard, and given some of the other posters above seemed to think my idea was silly or purile I thought i'd clarrify what I ment a little bit.

Anyway...whatever the lyrics, i love the song, and i cant wait for the studio version come march!
