Title: Work Contracts & Laws in the US.
Post by: Where is Hassan Nasrallah ? on February 07, 2006, 02:55:49 PM
Well. one of the big issue right now in france is about the change the gov. is about to make on the Code of Work. introducing a new kind of contract where the company can fire its employee without giving any reason. It's supposed to a be a liberal option, that would free the mind of the boss and hire more easily ....

is it all like that in the us ? can you get fired without reason ? do you have standards contracts (one with limited duration, one unlimited ...) ?
one thing is that in france, people still dream about the job security and almost  life job, where you can't really get fired unless you really mess up of the company is dying.

so this liberal *evolution* is not very appreciated here. but the Gov has to take measure to pretend he's active ....

?  ??? ?

You can always get fired.  At my company we say we are an "at will" employer, meaning we can fire with or without cause.  But it doesn't mean much, since if we don't have a reason to fire someone, we will end up paying unemployment benefits.  And if we really screw up they can sue us for unlawful termination.  So we can get rid of a bad employee, but we may have to pay for it later.

Some people do work under contracts, but they can always be terminated, they just may have to pay severance pay.
