Title: Chinese Democracy - Concept Album?
Post by: axlsalinger on February 01, 2006, 03:56:59 AM
What do you suppose the odds are that Chinese Democracy will be in some way a concept album? It seems probable that the songs will have similarities in terms of sound and theme. Axl mentioned Queen specifically, and has said in the past that Queen II was his favourite record, very much a conceptual record.

What do you think? Concept album or collection of songs?

Interesting theory, perhaps it could be... Maybe this time has been spent on writing a narrative in songs or something.
I guess we'll know soon enough! : ok:

Yeah, I think there will be a specific theme to the album. But without hearing the songs, or at least having a confirmed track list, it would just be a guess. I did an identical thread to this last year. You should have just resurrected my thread. : ok:

I have a worrying feeling Chinese Democracy will always remain a 'concept' album  :hihi:

why not ?

I am sure that behind all the songs Axl and the band recorded, there is a concept.

All the new songs we heard are about a person, either a woman or the old members of gnr I guess, and they relate differents moments of life.

so my guess is chinese democracy could be Axl's autobiography!

what do you think of that ?
others ideas ?
 :)

id say your thinking too much......

Yes of course there is, it was said that there is a certain order that the songs go to (more less compliment each other). Sadly I can't find a song from all we've heard that ties itself to or with 'Catcher in the rye'. We shall see come Nov??

interesting? people interpret songs differently, i could see what your thinking but i'm thinking differently

i think that could be the same for any band (singer/songwriter)......all songs relate to different moments in life. or are about a person or something that relates to them

most of them could actually.
as far as it being a concept album, the only concept will be to put the best songs on the album(s) in a complimentary fashion...I think.

Most of Axl's newer stuff seems very autobiographical.

The writing has become a bit more deep than when the old band was together.

that's right, but imo, songs on CD were not chosen at random. there's a link between them I think

Well actually Axl has said about CD that : "Its truly a melting pot" which should point in the oposite direction of a concept album...

Wasn't that just a comment regarding different musical styles  present though? It doesn't rule out the change of concept album..
...I don't believe in it either though. But hay who knows.

The melting pot remark always felt a little troubling somehow. It wouldn't be nice if CD was too much of  a smish smash of sounds and styles. I'd rather not see an album that sounds like it has been 10 years in the making, with 10 different "band members", 10 different producers, in 10 different studios with 10 different studio engineers, and 10..ah you get point:P

probably more autobiographical than conceptual. about Madagascar we knows he spent some time there. in China, too.
lyrics are sometimes about women (stephanie seymour, jennifer driver...)

don't forget he's a huge fan of roger waters, too.

The melting pot remark I believe was more about the sound of the album, and the different styles coming together, rather than the concept of the album itself in terms of themes/lyrics

Only Axl knows what goes on in Axl's head...and like the rest of humanity, his hold on that is tenuous at times.  I will wait for his explaination before I fall into the trap of 'reviewing' or commenting on an unreleased album we know very little about.

While I'm eager to hear Axl's first interview as mentioned by D, I'd really love to hear him break down the songs, how the developed by musically and lyrically.  GN'R Storytellers would be great!

I specifically think The Blues is about Slash.  TWAT about Stephanie Seymour.  Madagascar about Axl's isolation from the public.  IRS about his lawsuits.  Message For You partly about the drama of getting CD completed.  Then you have songs like Rhiad, Chinese Democracy, and Shacklers which are less autobiographical.  Just my guesses anyway.

I would say that is a fair perception. Time will tell!!  ;)

Well, Ive heard the six tracks that were leaked, and they're amazing

Bach: But those arent the final versions. he laughed about those. those arent the record. those are some other version of whatever. One of my favorite songs - I asked axl if I could mention the song titles and he said "fine"--and one of my favorite songs is this song called "the general" which is so, its by far the heaviest metal tune I think ive ever heard axl do, this slow grinding riff with these high peircing vocals, screaming vocals. I was like , when is this coming out? and he said "2012" I was like dude, your killin me! He goes, "well this comes out on the third record. it relates to this song, its a trilogy, this goes with this lyrically." hes got it all figured out, hes just different than other people. he does thingso n his own time, in his own way, but you know...the worlds not prepared for what ive heard from this guy. its got the grandness and the epic-ness of november rain but with the snarl, the attitude of appetite. because the album that ive heard, alot of the drumming is by brain, who plays so heavy and mean. its a really...grand is the word for it, but its still got that attitude. Theres some great music comin' your way. My album meanwhile is 100 percent comin out on november 20. thats 100 percentile. its done, its mastered, ive got it on my fucking ipod and its ready to go.

It will be intresting to hear what tracks Frank and Ron played on the entire album.

All the songs in a concept album must have a mutual theme, like "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and "Division Bell". The songs we know so far doesn't share the same theme.

But, of course, my dream is that CD will feature 13 songs we've never heard of!  :peace:

it could be a vague theme or a plot..
representing every chapter with dif song..
like Marilyn Manson... and the concept trilogy he created (Hollywood, Mechanical Animals and Antichrist Superstar), the songs dont relate lirically.. but in the whole concept, the whole theme.. they add something to the plot and connect each other

I think it'll be a collection of songs but most of the songs are inspired by his relationship with Stephanie (TWAT, MFY, Oklahoma...). BTW, The Blues is about Dylan, Stephanie's son... he said that back in time...

How about this as a concept: "put the album in stores so people can buy it?"

I think IRS is about the fans that think Axl owe them something.
