Here Today... Gone To Hell!

I was looking through my collection and realised that well over 50% of my albums are from the 7 years from 1987-1994 (purely by coincidence the GNR years..)

Later era hair metal and grunge are my fav musical styles (how many can say that?), and form the bulk of my collection

Whats your favourite era or set of years (and don't say 1900-2005 or include 3 decades.... :P)

Mine too...I must say between 89 and 95. Not just because GNR ruled the world in those years, but also because mainstream bands that I like and grew up listen to made it big; Pearl Jam, Green Day, Alice in Chains and even Oasis.

Don't let me forget, the two bands that influenced grunge were active in that time frame as well; The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr.

1976-1979: Albums like Nevermind The Bollocks (Sex Pistols), The Ramones, Rocket To Russia, It?s Alive (Ramones), London Calling (The Clash), Jailbreak, Live And Dangerous (Thin Lizzy), Parallel Line, Eat To The Beat (Blondie) came out.

Early 80?s: Albums like Like A Virgin and Thriller were released. And 1st Metallica album was relesed in that time too..

1991: Amazing year! Blood Sugar Sex Magic (RHCP), Nevermind (Nirvana), The Black Album (Metallica) UYI I & II (GNR) were released. Those are very important for me. I was 12 years old, and i started to love and live rock music.

2001-2005: Great bands like Backyard Babies, Turbonegro, Monster Magnet, Audioslave, Hellacopters, QOTSA, Green Day, Foo Fighters and Libertines have made one or two amazing albums at this era!

Beatles were the greatest.

I would have to say 1984-92

I have to say late 80s -early 90s. GNR, U2, Metallica, Alica Cooper, AC/DC,Aerosmith, Ozzy, Queen, even Bon Jovi, all had great albums in that period.

Coincidence or not, this era started with GNR and died along with Freddie Mercury and GNR

1967-1972: The Beatles best work, Lennon's early solo albums, Hendrix, the Stones, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Love, Janis Joplin, Mountian, MC5.

1991-1994-Illusion albums, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Tori Amos, NIN.

1978-1995. The late 70's saw metal explode; it became faster, more aggressive, and better. In the 80's, there was thrash metal, grindcore, speed metal, power metal, heavy metal... Hell, the whole genre matured! In the early 90's, death metal and black metal hit their creative peaks. After 1995, it all seemed to get old and tired out. Lots of bands broke up or became mediocre in the mid 90's.

Lately, things are getting better. Metalcore is controversial, but it's amazing live, and power metal is currently very healthy.

It's hard to pick one. I guess the '80s

A bit of a stretch for an era.. but.. '76 to '91 is my favorite.

1970-1994 is my fav.       

1990-1998

1969-1972 - For Aerosmith, Led Zep, and classic rock.
1984-1992 - For most things GN'R, AC/DC and the like.

late 60s-70s - Beatles, Hendrix, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Who, and many other great bands all either started or were at their best around these times.

1986-1994- GnR

1973 - 1998 talking about musical industry and rock category

For instance Queen make a debut album, later was Kiss, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Guns N Roses, Megadeth, Helloween. Those bands till early 90's to late 90's made great records
And at the end of 1998 begening of 1999 pop music begun to take a great step in music.

So my personal fave era would be those years, of course I didnt existed between 1973 till 22 days later of 1980, but according the music I've heard that could've been nice  : ok:

I'd also go with the late 80's-early 90's era.  Hair metal was good, heavy metal was still fast, and GN'R ruled the friggin' world.  Bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Posion, Tesla, Motley Crue, and Iron Maiden were on top.  And you had bands like The Black Crowes, Pantera, and Skid Row just starting to get big.

2000-2005 has seen metalcore and melodic death metal get big, and I would rate it above 1995-2000.

I agree, at least recently there has been some decent rock and metal bands that have gotten pretty big.  From 1995-2000 was just awful.  There was barely any "rock" out there, and what was out there was just a sorry excuse for rock.  at least recently we've had some older bands get big again.

This covers a nice era, and i would just like to say, that there a lot of material that is so damn good in the 85-95 decade. Now you have to dig to find good music, but power is good, very nice, and my advice, Rata Blanca, listen to some of that Argentinan band the las 2 albums "La LLave de la puerta Secreta" and "El Camino del Fuego"

anything before 1981-present when MTV came out, music just became commercialized to death since then. I hate the 80's but Guns n' Roses rescued the decade from completley sucking balls. Even G n' R and especially Slash said the 80's were one of the worst decades for music.

Well, lets say it this way..

1987 -1991 was great! The GNR era! And Aerosmith and all that stuff!

1991 - 1996 The first part of Tools, Kyuss era... StoneRock and Grunge (Alcie in chains, faith no more)

1960s because of the Impact

1980s because of the fun

What exactly makes GN'R less commercial than other bands of that era.  GN'R was one of the biggest bands in the world at that time.  To me that makes them pretty commercial.  I don't see any prblem with being commercial.  If your music is amazing (which if course GN'R's was) then why shouldn't you be able to make some money off it?  The 80's were the golden era of music in my opinion.  GN'R, hair metal, thrash metal, regular metal (or whatever the fuck category Maiden, Priest, etc. fall under).

My collection is exactly the same. I remember as a kid I used to follow the charts song for song until around late 93-94 when I started to lose interest. 87 to 93 for me.

65-75

Notting beats this era. The best albums from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Beach Boys, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and Elton John.

91-95
Nirvana, PJ, AIC, NIN, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, up until 95 it started to go downhill, the last bands to hang on were Green Day, Offspring, Bush etc... Then around 96 music really died off.? :'( IMHO at least.?

i think 2006 has been great for new bands and new albums. and lots of older bands coming back also.

Not sure about new bands, but RHCP, Tool, Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Army of Anyone have all put out solid albums..

well it depends what your into.

Anything but right now. Um thats a toughie, probably go for the sixties. I mean like every month the stones would have a classic single out, the beatles, motown, bands like Love, the doors, captain beefhearts first album, you name it. Great decade for music.

the 80's rock until 91-93. after freddie mercury died rock seemed to fall slowly.

84-94 probably for me
you have your GNR, Bryan Adams, Grunge Bands and what not.  all good music stopped around 94-96.

60's and the 90's... easily.  Of course every era has great bands but these two decades have the most bands that I enjoy on a daily basis.

If I was feeling especially nerdy I'd probably do a spreadsheet and make some goold ol' pie charts to show where my collection is based!  But not for now.  I'd guess most of my music came out 1985-1995, that sort of era.  I only have one or two albums from the 60's, some good music in that decade but too soft/dated most of it for me.  The 70's I'm more into, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd headlining.  The 80's is where it gets interesting, with thrash metal being a major favourite genre of mine.  Maiden, GN'R, Megadeth and Metallica headline the 80's for me.  The 90's was very good, Pantera, Faith No more, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains coming in to headline.  00's?  Not a lot yet, Mastodon and Strapping Young Lad headlining the 00's so far.

In short, 1980-1996.

Mid 1960's through  the early 1970's.

IMO this period brought more new ideas and concepts to music than any other era in rock by far. Bands like Cream, The Doors, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Ten Years After, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Greatful Dead, Santana, Jefferson Air Plane, Steppenwolf The Stooges, MC5, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, The Who, and so many more came out in this short period of time.

1966-1980.. beatles, the doors, pink floyd, emerson lake and palmer, led zeppelin..

1985-1994
2000-20??

In 1995 you got the Hly Bible what more can I say any Americans who are not familiar with this album should go and get the Box set 10yr anniversary well worth the money if you can find it.
