Title: Set Me Free (version 1 vs. version 2)
Post by: marknroses on November 28, 2005, 11:16:35 AM
I don't know if this has been covered yet, but I noticed after downloading Set Me Free on PC (I already have it on CD) that they sound different in very small, but very significant ways.

I really like the version 2 of SMF on Contraband, it rocks so much harder and has more edge than the version 1 on the Hulk SNDTRCK. It shows me how even Velvet Revolver have a "perfectionist" edge to them. They won;t just settle on the first mix or first edit of the song, they still try different things until they find the right sounds for the song to flow well. It also comes to show how good their taste is in music and how well they know what the fans will dig.

To be honest I never knew there were two versions.  How exactly do they differ?

there's a difference in some of Scott's vocals, there's some difference in the guitar.
the version that ended up on Contraband was much better anyways.

I prefer the Hulk version actually, it sounds closer to the classic GN'R sound than the one that's on Contraband.

I love the little drum roll Matt does at the end of the Hulk version too, they cut that off on CB.

There where no new vocal parts recorded for SMF, on Contraband the vocals are mixed louder at the end.

I like the version of the Hulk alot better then on Contraband, the Hulk one sounds more classic rock/GN'R like then on Contraband so my guess is that they didn't like it cause of that ;)

Live versions are fantastic? :o
It was the highlight of the show when I saw them, with the "Guns" part of the show.

Although the whole concert I went to was awesome, the acoustic set and SMF were the best part of the show. That soloing between Dave and Slash is fucking sweet.
