Title: Running
Post by: RichardNixon on November 28, 2005, 01:04:01 AM
Who here likes to run? I love it. I feel very relaxed and at peace while doing it. Six miles a day, everyday.

I run for around 45 minutes to an hour 5 days a week and u are right, it takes all my stress away and makes me feel great.

Running is mental and I get my breathing down to where I almost put myself in a trance/meditative type state and before I know it, I have gone a long ways.

I need some running shoes, I use basketball sneakers but they dont feel right while running, they are much too heavy.

No matter how many times  I have tried, I've always failed. I just cant do it. It's so boring!

I love sports, they are so much fun. I like to compete as well, playing tennis, basketball, football fulfills that, but running, man, I can't do it for more than 15 minutes. It sure is a great exercise, but it's boring to no end.

I know what you mean.. Running bores the shit out of me. But give me ball, and I'll chase the damn thing all day long. I'm not too smart.

Me too run is quite boring even if I listen to music while Im doing it, but it's not the same, I rather play football and kick somebody  :hihi:

Even though run is a healthy way to live  :-\

So many good things come from running:

-Eat how much and whatever you want.
-Catch a bus
-Walk up stairs w/o being out of breath
-runners high

Title: Re: Running
Post by: D on November 30, 2005, 02:12:22 AM
People always asked me why I never got drunk or high, Id always say that I got the same feeling exercising as people do with alcohol or drugs.

If I dont exercise I get so depressed and so miserable.

I found that running somewhere is better than running on a treadmill or in a circle.

At my best Id run 5 miles but i did it through my city and it seemed so easy, Id try running in a circle and I just couldnt run for shit due to boredom, same with a treadmill.

Its very weird the mental part of it all.

All things you can also achieve by playing sports. And don't tell me that running's a sports. Running's a survival method from 3000B.C. .

Except that you don't have to run that long to get the high if you can make a great play playing something that's actually fun. Of course if one sucks at these type of sports, then he most propably will be left without this great feeling.

I would argue running is a sport, but regardless, I find it fun. And studies show you need to run at least an hour for that "runners high."

I used to run a lot but I am plain foot, I don't know how to say but the base of my feet are plain!, so I can run normaly I get tired really quick if I stand too much, I hate it but that's my condition, when I run I rather do it with something fun cause I get bored really quick.
A plus point is that running got me lose 20 lbs in one month so I think is good to do it but I found to difficult to do it.
How many miles you run? and the first time when you run did you find it hard to do it?
The question is for everyone who has run.

Running is soooo dull...I just can't do it for more than half a mile

But if I play a sport I run like a madman (  ;D ) for hours and feel great.

Started running to lose weight years ago, lost weight, still running.

It was a pain in the ass when I started, but now it's like a medidation for me.

Sometimes when agressive I wanna beat up someone and stuff and then I go out running and everything's good. I can sort my thoughts there. You're alone, in nature, feeling free and alive - it's great.

And it's true, you can eat whatever you want! I'm eating like a motherfucker but I don't gain a pound anymore. And I don't even work out that much, so I guess that's due to running.

Running about 5 miles 4 days a week and loving it!? ?: ok:

In the winter when you run, if you're a man, wear underpants under your running pants. Or else you'll get frost nip on the top of your penis, and that ain't no fun.

Keep it up bro. But where heavy underwear. The cold weather will make your penis frost nip, I'm not kidding!

I don't think that's the case. Purple lives in Ecuador and I don't believe they are ever that cold.? :P

20 mins is not bad though, many people can't even run 10 mins. Take me for example, I'm not out of shape and I can't run more than 5 mins...as D was poining out earlier, the mental aspect is crucial and I just don't have it for running.

Title: Re: Running
Post by: D on December 08, 2005, 07:45:46 PM
Running is mostly mental, me for instance when I run, I dont get tired, my body doesnt hurt and I dont get out of breath but mentally I just keep saying STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP.

Right now my goal is to run a sub 7 minute mile.

I weigh 225 pounds, so to run a sub 7 minute mile to me would be good.

I never timed my miles and I would just run slow for distance but I started out running a 12 minute mile that was way too easy. then I ran an 11 minute mile it was easy, then I did a 10 once again very easy.

So Tuesday I ran one in 9:07 I think it was and it was easy.

So tonight Im gonna go for an 8 and a half minute mile.

Im hoping to get under the 7 mark by Spring.

I mostly have been running strictly on EFX machines which are great for getting in shape, but I am starting to grow very fond of the treadmill again.

Now Im 2 days running and its less painfull than in the first day so I hope it keeps getting better  :-\

Title: Re: Running
Post by: D on December 09, 2005, 06:56:02 PM
Just keep it up and you will find it gets easier and easier.

Just try to do a little better than the day before and take control over your mind and dont let it take control over you.

When your mind starts telling you to quit do a check of all your body.

Go to your legs and see how they feel, go to your breathing and see if you are out of breath are not.

if your legs arent hurting immensely and your lungs are still in great shape, tell your mind to fuck off.

Why is it that the first half of a mile is so hard.

It seems once u get through that first half mile it becomes a whole lot easier.

Title: Re: Running
Post by: RichardNixon on December 09, 2005, 08:28:39 PM
When I first started to run I would ache all over, but the more you do it, the more you will get used to it, the less painfull it will be. But do warm ups, or else you can get awful cramps. And I am not kidding about wearing long underwear, or two pairs of underwear. Jack frost is not a friend to your penis.

It's true. In the cold, the penis is the first thing to go. Not your ears, or your nose, or your fingers...it's the penis. A few times I would go for a run and I would forget to wear long underwear, damn that would hurt. If felt like the penis was in a vice.

I ran for years and was very good. I ran religiously and competed all over. I was one of the top local runners in the bay area. Not good enough to go the olympics or anything, just locally.

I am in good shape now and for my age. But running seems impossible these days. Every time I add running into my exercise routine I always get sick (cold, flu whatever). It is puzzling at best and I can't figure out why it happens. I can do other cardio and this won't happen. Maybe I could make it a couple of weeks, but eventually, I'll get sick. I've tried over and over and it never fails.

I wish I could run like I used to years ago, effortlessly and as long as I wanted. That sure would be nice. Maybe I'll be able to pull it off again one day.  :-\

That is bizarre, i can't run outside unless it is summertime.

If I ran in cold weather Id die from an ashthma attack even though I dont have asthma.

I cant run in cold weather, it totally fucks my lungs up. I guess the cold weather opens your lungs and makes you more vulnerable to colds etc.

U are wrong though Richard, If God was a Bush man, I think SLC by now would be walkin around with elephantitis of the nuts. :hihi:

I love to run in the winter. I love to see everything white, it can be quite beautiful. I agree that it is hard to breathe. I have asthsma, but you just have to breathe slowly and not "blow your load" in the first 10 minutes.

Title: Re: Running

When I am down in the dumps, running is the best thing for me. I ran for 12 miles today through ice and snow and I feel like a million bucks. The muscles throughout my body feel so relaxed, so good. And mentally, whenever I go for a run, I can see everything clearly and in perspective. I really feel like I'm on top of the world.  Try to run up hills, as fast as you can. You will feel like Rocky in "Rocky IV" when Rocky ran up the mountain in Russia.

12 miles with no stops?

Damn u should try and run a marathon or something.

I do love running outdoors better than on a treadmill or something.

I just hate the winter time when its so cold.

I do like runnin like right after a good rain durin the spring or summer, it is very very relaxing.

if i dont exercise everyday I get so hyper and then depressed, then hyper then depressed, so basically I exercise everyday just to be in good moods and to feel normal.

Running does get kinda boring unless you have something to look at or listen to.

I used to do a lot of running and cross country running as a kid.

Last couple of years though as soon as I run on any hard surface or treadmill, I get the same reoccuring shin splints problem which I picked up playing football (soccer) season before last.

U need to start off slow and build your way up, If u dont run every single day and take a significant amount of time off and try to start back at the level u were once at, U are gonna fuck yourself up royally.

If that isnt the reason then I have no clue.

I improved my mile time again today, I went from 9:07 last week down to 8:57 today.

The time was good today because before I ran it, I swam 1 mile and ran for 15 minutes on an EFX machine.

I also just got over a cold.

I think I couldve ran an 8:30 mile.

Im gonna bust my ass to get under 7 minutes a mile.

I have been concentrating the last few weeks on getting my 3 mile time down.

Keep in mind I weigh right now 212 pounds

first time 3 weeks ago i ran it in 31 minutes
Last week I got it in 28:36

Today I ran it in 27:36

My short term goal is to get it in 25 minutes my ultimate goal would be under 20 *which I dont see happening*

its cool cause 5 years ago I use to run for distance all the time and it was so relaxing and would make u feel so great about yourself after u finished.

I lost track for awhile and got into heavy weightlifting Elliptical machines etc.

It feels great to be back to running.

The most Ive ran since Ive been back has been 5 miles.

I wasnt tired or anything afterwards so i believe I could break double digits.

Im gonna try it soon.

Did my three mile in 25:31.

2 minutes fewer in just under 2 weeks.

I am dramatically dropping it each week.

I did my 5 mile in 46:42, Id like to eventually get it under 40 minutes.

I dropped my three mile time down to 24:53
My 4 mile time is at 34:46
and my 5 mile time is now down to 43:30

Im starting to learn that.

I subscribed to Runner's World Magazine and they have a special this week that teaches an average person to get in marathon shape.

So ive been following it and so far so good.

I cant imagine ever being able to run one but that is my ultimate goal.

Ive been paying extra special attention to working out my legs also in the weight room.

Im kinda weird though, Seems Im a better Treadmill runner than I am an outside runner.

Usually for most people thats reversed.

On a treadmill its easier for me to focus and keep my pace whereas outside Im never quite sure how fast or slow Im going.

Cool man.  You said earlier your weight was at 212.  Where's it at now?  How tall are you?  Since I'm asking, I'll give mine out.  I'm 6' 3" 184 pounds.  About 5 years ago just finishing up school, the stress took me up to 208 at one time.  Chubby and out of shape doesn't feel as good.   :)

I ran/swam my 1st biathlon earlier this month and a 5K since.  The whole "run slowly" keeping my heart rate below 155bpm has worked great.  In 2004 I ran my 1st 5K and had a 22:40.  July 15th, on a very hot and humid morning, I posted a 20:15 at a local race.  :)
(of course, the heart rate stuff is for training only)  My goal for the race was to bust 21.  D, you'll hit your goals as long as you keep working on it.  Stretch regularly, stay hydrated, eat well, give yourself a day off between runs, and there will be no stoppin' ya!

Quick question to all:  Do you listen to, or sing in your head when running?  WTTJ was a great psych-up song for my 5K, and I had Better and IRS in my head during the run.

PS:  If GNR management is reading...could we please get some GNR running merchandise?  I don't know the name of the material, but damn, I'd love to run in some GNR clothing.  :peace:

I am now down to 208, I am 5'8 probably about 15 percent body fat, U can see my 4 pack really well and Ive been bodybuilding with weights for over 6 years.

I run with my MP3 player.

GNR is always great, A song by Eminem "mosh" which my fav fighter Tito Ortiz comes to the ring with is also a great song to run to. totally fires me up.

Here the last few days my hamstrings have been sore and my legs just dont feel Powerful....... Do u think I need a day off or two??

Ive been runnin 15 to 20 miles a week but I feel a little burnt out.

I worry all the time, I dont know if anyone else does, but Like If I run 5 miles in 43:30 today, tomorrow Ill worry that for some reason I wont be able to do it again.

u ever experience that? What can u do to get over the mind doubts?

D, listen to your body when it comes to "burn-out."  But, if you are using good form with your stretching, keep it up on those days off.  Hammies are very important to keep stretched as Randy Moss could attest to.  :)  Also, stay hydrated.  By the time you are thirsty, you're already dehydrated.  Also remember, testosterone works against us.  That hormone that gives us a competitive edge and gives us that extra edge in athletics can work against us as well.  It can make you push for a faster time every single damn time you run.  This doesn't work in the long-term.  You'll burn out fast.  The majority of your runs should just be easy and make you work on form.  You'll build your "aerobic engine."  Once you have this, you'll be able to run your 3 miles just as fast at the end as you do in the beginning.  I'm a stat nazi, I record everything.  Don't get caught up in the right here right now.  Look at the long-term.  Make a chart.  Just keep choppin' wood!  Hell, we're GNR fans, if anyone knows about patience!

5'8" 208, 15% body-fat, I wouldn't want to run into you in a dark alley!

Thanks for the advice.

U hit the nail right on the head with me.

I dont know when to let up.

Today I set a new personal best in my 3 mile run.

i shaved it from 24:53 down to 24:05 today.

I am stronger on my last mile than my first which is cool

My times were:

mile 1: 8:15
mile 2:8:15
mile 3:7:35

my goal right now is to run a mile under 7 minutes.

whats the fastest u ever ran a mile?

Those are some kick ass 5k times. If I could ever get down to that Id be floating on cloud nine. Have u ever thought of running a marathon? I would love to do that someday.

when u say run slow and work on form, what are u talkin? maybe 10 minute mile pace? how far should u run on easy days??

Slower pace more miles?? or same miles just slower?

Thanks for the stretching tip as well, on days off I havent been stretching but I will from now on.

I bought a kick ass pair of running shoes a couple weeks ago, I got some New Balance 1000's.

They had some cheaper ones, I think a number in the 300s for 60 bucks but I tried on the 1000s afterwards and fell in love.

they were 110 bucks but they have been worth every single penny. Before i bought them My Achilles tendon would throb and just kill me. My right knee was giving me trouble but since I bought the shoes I am virtually pain free.

D, congrats on the times.  That's great stuff.  Glad to hear you'll be stretching more!  I'll even do it at work in between tasks.

My fastest mile, boy I don't know really.  I measured my neighborhood loop twice, and it came out to be 1.45 miles.  I do all my runs in 1.45 miles or multiples thereof...2.9, 4.35, 5.8.
My fastest 1.45 mile time was 9:02.  That's 6:16/mile.

I very rarely do the same run.  For the most part when I'm doing a "slow" (that term is subjective of course) run, I bow to my heart rate monitor.  It's a Polar brand basic model.  Mine is a FS1.  I got it as a gift earlier this year.  I think they can be picked up for less than $50.  I'm tech. challenged, but a monkey could run it, so I'm alright!  For my age, if I keep my heart rate around 150, I'm still in the aerobic range.  (I'm 32).  The benefit to this workout is that you don't go "anaerobic."  Anaerobic activities will tire you out really fast.  You'll have longer recovery times and be more prone to injury.  Every person's speed will be different at any given heart rate.

I don't mean to talk your ears off, but if it can help, I'm happy.  When it came to that 5k, I took 2 days off b4, and 3 days off after from running.  Plenty o' stretching and drinking water.
That's just because it was a race where I just ran my fucking ass off in.  First mile was 6:15, 2nd mile 6:53, and last 1.11 miles was a 6:28 per mile pace.  Damn that was a humid morning too!  With my wife and 2 kids there, I felt like Superman!

A co-worker of mine has been doing competitive triathlon stuff.  He's trying to qualify for the Hawaiian Ironman race...the one on tv.  He did the Arizona Ironman race earlier this year.  In just over 12 hours he swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles, and ran 26.2 miles (a marathon!).
He said I couldn't even do a half-ironman (half the distances of the regular).  I've signed up for a Sprint Triathlon, which I mentioned in another thread in Fun N Games.  That'll be in October.  It's short (.25 mile swim, 16 mile bike and a 5k)...but it's a start.  When someone says I can't, there's no better motivation.      I did a "slow" 5.8 mile run 2 days ago in 50:30, and a 10-lap 14.5 mile mountain bike ride yesterday around the neighborhood in 58:13.  I'm tired today, and I'm resting (with the exception of an hour-long push-mower mowing of the grass!)

Quick marathon story.  In '02, while still waiting for Chinese Democracy like the lunatic I am, me and my wife were training for the Philadelphia marathon about an hour and 15 minutes north of here.  Anywhoo, long story short, I foolishly decided to run 3 days in a row in 100+ heat index weather that June...I injured my knee, and couldn't run more than 20 yards without pain.  Within 2 months we switched gears and decided to have our first baby.
The best injury I ever had!!!

That heart monitor sounds cool, Im gonna have to check it out when I get some spare cash

Triathalon's dont seem like my thing, The running and biking would be cool but Im not the greatest swimmer in the world.

maybe once I get out of the 200 pound range I could look into something like that but right now I am a pretty crappy swimmer...

The one you are doing sounds intriguing though, I could handle a .25 mile swim.

When u run a 5k do u just race to finish or do u try and win?

Thats my problem, to me its pointless for me cause I know id have no chance at victory, so what do u do? run one and then run the next one and just keep tryin to beat your previous times?

U have to keep me posted on that Sprint Triathalon. Good luck with that.

Cool how your injury led to the birth of your child, way to turn a negative into a positive! : ok:

Some day I am gonna run a marathon, like i said though, I gotta wait till I can get my weight down to at least the 180's.

I ran 7 miles yesterday in 65 minutes. I took today off as my legs were sore as hell, I stretched really well though.

slow 5.8 miles in 50 minutes!!! :hihi: :hihi: Rub in your superiority to me. :hihi: :hihi: although I did do my 6 mile in 54:30. My 7th mile was slow though as I was pretty wore down.

This week my goal is to add some hill runs into my routine. Thats gonna be rough.

Do u workout with weights for your legs??

Don't worry about what everyone else does.  It's like golf in that way.  It's just you against yourself out there.  Personally, I set a goal for myself.  In 2003 or 4 when I ran my 1st 5k, I was coming off a knee injury in which I could safely use an elliptical trainer (low-impact exercise) for training.  I ran my friggin ass as hard as I could, and got a 22:40.  I could barely walk for a week!!!  I had to go up and down stairs with 2 hands on the rail it was so bad!!  My goal for this race, already knowing some practice times, was to break 21 minutes.  Mission accomplished!  After the 20:15, my obvious next goal is to break 20.

Do u workout with weights for your legs??

I should, but I don't.   :(

D, please don't think I'm rubbin it in with times, I'm sure you were joking.  :)  I was just trying to illustrate how anyone can improve their times with the right means and effort.
 :peace:

Triathalon's dont seem like my thing, The running and biking would be cool but Im not the greatest swimmer in the world.

In October, a buddy of mine who is 6'5" tall and 265 pounds, self-admittedly not in the best shape, will be doing a sprint triathlon with me in October.  .25 mile swim, 16 mile bike, and 3.11 mile run.  If your form isn't good, the swim is tougher than it sounds.  It will be an ocean swim for us.  But anyhow, the point is, anyone can do it if they put their mind to it.
I got into a lap-swimming pool for the 1st time in my life in February this year.  I could go down and back once (50 yards) before becoming winded and/or feeling like I was going to drown!  4 or 5 months later after going once or twice a week, I am able to swim 19 laps in a row without stopping.  :)  This allowed me to do the run/swim biathlon at the ocean.  As you get older (like me!) you'll find yourself wanting to challenge yourself in different ways.  It's pretty cool, and the sense of accomplishment is insane.   :)

I wish you and anyone else here reading this the best of luck in their endeavors!!!  If you only live once, make the most of it!

P.S.  adding hills in, now that's awesome!  I'm jealous.  I live in Delaware which is flat as a pancake!!

I was only jokin with the times :hihi:

U just give me something to shoot for. I dont have any friends here or anyone to run or workout with so Im using your times to help stop me from getting complacent and satisfied.

In a lap swim 50 yard pool, I had at one time built up where I could do 10 laps. I havent swam in months though but Im sure I could build myself back up.

I need to learn better form though. so thats something for me to work on.

Can u help me out with some conversions???

I never ran track and Im not up to snuff with a lot of the running terms just yet.

If u are suppose to run 800 meters... how far in miles is that? a quarter of a mile??

How bout 100 meters?

Im following a chart I got in Runner World's Magazine that helps people get in shape for marathons and I want to be exactly sure how far Im suppose to go on each interval run.

Title: Re: Running
Post by: Axl4Prez2004 on July 31, 2006, 05:56:03 PM
800 meters = .497 miles (just about 1/2 mile)

100 meters = .062 miles.

BTW, that's awesome.  I have never run a marathon.  I think the most I've ever run at once was 8.4 miles, and that was very close to when I messed up my knee a few years back.  With the right plan, motivation, and body maintenance, you'll achieve your goal.

Have you thought about what marathon you'd like to race?  A friend of mine lives just outside of Nashville, TN.  He has done the Nashville Country Music Marathon the last 2 or 3 years.  He ran this year's in 4:51:21.  I'm proud of him.  He took off a good 25 pounds through regular exercise and a smart diet and he's in good shape now.  He has had a good time at that marathon, and from its web-site, it looks quite popular.  I don't know how far away you are from Nashville...but my buddy says he has a blast there.

BTW, in the words of MLK from Maddy, "You're not alone...you're NEVER alone!"   :)  I work out alone as well.  Occasionally, my wife and kids wave as I bike or run by if they're outside.   :)  There is a free training log at beginnertriathlete.com.  You can log your run times in and it calculates miles per hour for you and totals up your weekly, monthly, and yearly distances and average times.  It has swim and bike sections too, but you don't have to use them.  Jut an fyi.   : ok:

Good luck with the running.  Here in Delaware it's hot as Hades.  Tennessee must be ridiculously hot.  Be smart and run early in the am or towards dusk.  Rock on!

Thanks so much for that conversion!

Now when it says to do 100 meter repeats I now know what to do!

I run inside on a treadmill mostly. Its WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY too hot in Chattanooga to run outside and I worry about heat stroke etc.

Ill check out that website. Sounds cool. I keep my progress in notebooks right now but that seems to be easier.

Here is a question:

Saturday I ran that 7 miles in 1hr 5 minutes absolutely, totally pain free.

I took Sunday off, Monday I ran an easy recovery 3 mile run.

Well, about a mile and a half into it, I got stitches and my side started throbbing. I finished out the run though.

Tuesday, I did my hard 5 and a half mile interval run. 2 miles in, once again I got stitches and my side hurt *not as bad as the day before but it was uncomfortable to say the least. it only hurt for about a mile then it quit.

My question is... what causes stitches?

I always associated stitches with people who are out of shape but I ran 20 total miles last week pain free, including? those 7 miles Saturday without even the slightest twitch of pain in my side.  Monday I mean I ran slow easy miles never goin over a 10 minute mile pace.

any ideas? suggestions?

running is one of the things i hate the most doing in the world.. that and eating bolied potatoes.. :hihi:

i love most of the sports where you can score a goal or assist to a goal and stuff like that dunk, hit a home run, tackle someone you name it.. but running?.. the only purpose is to get better stamina and such things but you can't show off and be something special that people will remember.. they won't be saying "remember that night when Jon bla bla bla" because you only run.. there no purpose or at least i can't find a motivation for just running.. when i play sports i just got to make a fool of my opponent and show off thats me.. not running no way

Thing is, running allows u to dominate at other sports.

Ive been running hard for almost 2 months now.

I went to an MMA Jiu Jitsu class and although i wasnt the best, I beat everyone but the teacher simply cause my CARDIO was the absolute best of anyone in the class.

When the one hour class of continuous fighting was over, everyone was lying on the ground and I wasnt even breathing hard or the least bit tired.

Cheapdonjay, D hit the nail on the head there.  Your body is an aerobic engine.  Runners can just go forever in whatever sport they choose.

Now about D's sidestitches, aka cramps, nobody knows where they come from.  There are alot of theories out there ranging from hydration levels to muscle tightness to electrolyte levels to gas in your colon!  My experience has shown me to just run through it.  It usually goes away for me after a few miles if not sooner.  It's nothing serious.

Again, my only concern with you D is making sure you're not running too hard!  Give yourself some easy runs in between your hard runs.   : ok:

BTW, I looove boiled potatoes!  Great shit on a special occasion with asparagus and steak!!

Monday off
Tuesday 5 miles interval 1/4 mile runs. 10 minute mile,9 minute mile,8 minute mile,7:30 minute mile paces then repeat
wednesday 3 easy miles
Thursday Fartlek  15 minutes at 9 minute mile then 1 minute at 7 minute mile then back to 1 minute at 9 minutes. 2 minute mile at 7:30, then back to 2 minutes at 9 minute mile. 3 minutes at 8 minute mile back to 3 minutes on the 9 minute mile. 2 minutes at 7 minute mile back to 2 on the 9 minute mile, finally 1 mile at a 6 minute pace then back to the 9 for one more minute.

total distance: 4 miles.

Friday OFF

Saturday 7 miles in 1:05 minutes

Total mileage for the week:19 miles.

So far this week Ive already knocked out 12 miles. Im taking today off, im gonna run easy tomorrow and then knock out a 7 to 8 miler Saturday.

LOL NO wonder then!!!

Im actually in 100 times better shape now then I was when i was 16.

when i was 16 i couldnt even run one mile.

Timothy, Id stay inside.

Way too hot to run outside.

I have a method to breaking up the monotony of running.

On a treadmill I change speeds every quarter of a mile.

On fast days Ill go

9 minute mile, 8 minute mile, 7:30 minute mile, 7 minute mile.

and ill just go through and repeat.

The time u finish the 7 u already knock out one mile.

Runners in not great shape shouldnt try that but u get the idea.

on an easy slow day ill do 12 minute, 11 minute 10 minute, 9:30 minute miles.

It keeps u from getting bored so easily.

Yup, boiled potatoes with the skins on.  I don't put much butter on them either.  Plenty of black pepper but no salt and I'm good to go!

On the running note.  I've got a 5K coming up on the 19th.  This dude I work with is determined to beat me.  He's very athletic (he's done an official Iron-Man, 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run, in 12 hours and change).  The only thing is running isn't his best event.  But, he's training like mad.  He's pissed that my last 5K was faster than his fastest time ever in a 5K by a whole 61 seconds.  I'm not gonna be drawn in by gamesmanship.  I've got my goal of breaking 20.  I told him that, but he's dead-set on beating me.  Oh well, to each his own.   :)  Wish me luck.  :peace:

Good Luck dude!! U should haVe him beat.

Making up 61 seconds is a lot.

it doesnt sound like much but 61 seconds in running is an eternity.

Ive had to miss the last two days of running thanks to a tight/sore left calf muscle.

Im not taking any chances.

I've got my long 7 mile run tomorrow.. hopefully it will be better when I wake up.

So D, did you get the 7-miler in?

I ran Friday and today, Sunday.  3 laps of 1.45 miles each time with the first 2 "slow," at about an 8:21 and 8:19 minute/mile pace, then a "fast" 1.45 mile lap.
Total distance each time equals 4.35 miles.  The first 2 laps each time were only different by 5 seconds from Friday to Sunday.  However, the "fast" finishing lap went from 9:55 to 9:36.

My goal is to break 20 minutes over 3.11 miles.  I think I can do it.  After running these 8:20's for 2.9 miles, and then doing 1.45 miles in 6:51 and 6:38, I think I can do it.  I'll train up to 2 or 3 days before the race.  I need to average 6:26 per mile.  I think it can be done.
p.s. finished Praying for Sleep, awesome awesome, awesome!  Totally cool ending.  : ok:

Title: Re: Running

How far exactly is 5k is it 3.2miles?

Im asking u this, cause here in Chattanooga, i picked up an application for a 5k run Which begins September 23rd.

I just dont want to finish last.

thing is I weigh 206 pounds now but still, most other runners are gonna weight 50 to 60 pounds less than me if not more.

So I know Im gonna get smoked bad, but Im gonna set goals like u suggested and do my best to reach them.

I ran 8 miles yesterday in 72:24, I did the 7 mile in 63:13 which was 1:45 faster than I did it last week.

I ran 20 miles last week!

Bad News:

I got a severe calf injury, I tell u it is hard to walk to the bathroom and back, so im probably gonna be sidelined for at least 3 days which sucks!

So this week, Im gonna take it easy, try to run easy everyday at a leisurely pace to make sure I heal before injuring myself severely.

We will talk about Praying For Sleep in the book thread, cant wait to discuss it with u.

U should break 20 minutes and I am rooting for u.

U give me inspiration and motivation just from our chats on here.

Keep training like u just described, and u should blow 20 minutes out of the water!

Oh yeah one last thing that may qualify in the "Too Much Info" range.

My right nipple bled yesterday... which hurt like hell!

U ever chaffed your nipple so bad running that it bled...

that was not a good experience!

anyhow, keep it up man.

6:26 a mile sounds brutal but the good thing about running that fast is...... The Race is over quicker! :hihi:

Title: Re: Running
Post by: Axl4Prez2004 on August 09, 2006, 06:38:02 PM
Ouch!  Chaffed nipples.  :crying:  I've never had that happen to me personally, but I do know folks who've had it happen to them.  It may sound silly, but the solution is to put a Band-Aid over the nipples or apply Vaseline over your nipples before the run.  If you think that's bad, wait until you are running outside in the winter and your "you know what" retracts!  Very uncomfortable.  :-[  btw, never too much info.  :peace:

I was afraid you'd strain something!  Your ever-improving times smack of running pretty damn hard!  It's that Floyd Landis 11:1 ratio testosterone!  (all-natural, yeah right  :hihi:)
Ease up a bit.  Patience...patience.

The 5K is 3.11 miles.  Don't worry about the 206 pounds.  In fact, some races have special categories for heavier racers.  Around here I think the runners over 200 pounds are called Clydesdales.  The women over 150 pounds are deemed Phillys or Athenas.  (chicks love that...not!  :hihi:)  Everyone starts at the same time, but when you finish, they'll rank you in your age division and/or Clydesdale category if they have that at the race.  On that topic a buddy of mine is doing a sprint triathlon with me in October (our 1st triathlon...I did that biathlon and had a blast) and he is 6'5" and 262 pounds.  He will be a big Clydesdale, but from what my IronMan co-worker says, the crowd gives these guys extra encouragement during the race, because they realize how much tougher it is for them.  Cool stuff.  Look around for these races with the heavier person category, because your times could place in the top 3.  Even if they don't, you'll still help out a good cause.  Alot of 5K's benefit charities.  Just an fyi.  Oh, also, btw, last November when me and my buddies were tossing around the idea of doing this sprint tri in October '06, I was at 192 and I was debating gaining the 8 pounds to be a Clydesdale, or losing 15 pounds to be competitive in the regular category.  At 6'3" I decided to trim up and I'm now 181.  I'd like to be just under 180 for the races.

No running today.  Sore throat and a little congestion.  Rest time needed.

D needs some rest time and gentle stretching...then ease back into the running.  Good luck!

I ran yesterday, an easy 3 miles pain free.

I went to run tonight but forgotmy socks!!!!!!!!! So I just swam instead.

Its good though cause my calf is feeling great now.

Im gonna take it slow and maybe only increase my weekly mileage by 1 mile a week. I went from 12 to 15 to 20 an dthat was overdoing it.

Hope u are feeling better, U have really helped educate me on this and thats awesome. I was just doing it trial and error like and paying the price for it.

But now I have a better understanding.

Cool.  I've got my race in 8 days.  I'm going out tonight for a slow run...hopefully 5.8 miles, we'll see.

Comraderie helps.  Keep up the good work!   8)
I'm getting closer to signing up for the Half-Ironman race in 2007.  I won't say it's a definite yet...but when I do, it'll be 1000% focus!  Will I be ready for an Ironman in '08?  We shall see.

Good news and bad news for me tonight.

Good News is.. I improved my 3 mile time from 24:05 to 23:35 tonight.

Bad news is...... now I somewhat injured my right Achilles tendon....

Im getting frustrated. I think Im gonna just have to run easy for a while and forget the fast stuff.

Well, I have good news and bad news about the 5K I just ran yesterday.  First, the bad news.  I did not break 20 minutes.  I finished in 20:19.  The good news?  I got 9th overall out of over 200 runners.  1st in my age division.  After the race I of course donned my new GNR shirt from the May 12 Hammerstein show!  GNR was represented, and I got a nice, "GNR!" yell from another runner when accepting my medal.

next goal...sprint triathlon in October...half-Ironman next June.  Wish me luck.   :peace:

U might not have broken 20, but u still improved from the last race and 9th overall is amazing!!!!

I dont think Im gonna make my race Sept 23rd.

My recent injuries forced me to take a week off and I ran 3 miles today very slow and felt good. Ill see how I am running and feeling a few days before the entry deadline.

I dont know yet though. Now Im mentally affected cause Im afraid everytime I run now that my calf or achilles will hurt.

I've had 2 pain free days though.

Would u recommend I only run every other day and maybe only one fast day a week?

GNR REPRESENT!! : ok:

Good Luck with the Sprint Triathlon and the half ironman next year.

I have no doubt u will do well!

Yes I would.  In addition to that, don't keep it a hard and fast rule to alternate days.  If it takes 2 days to feel recovered, give yourself 2 days.  If 3, give it 3.

I've got a friend in Nashville who runs the Music City Marathon every year.  He's getting married in March and is running it in April? I think that's the date for the marathon.  Anyhow, since it's either a plane flight or 12 hour drive one-way this year, and I'm planning the half-ironman in '07, and the ironman in '08, how's '09 sound?  We'll all bring "real" music to the Music City Marathon with Better cranked up at the starting line!   :hihi:

I got a new PR *personal record* today in my 3 mile.

Old time:23:35

New Record 23:15

Also thanks to my New Balance 587's I am 100 percent pain free afterwards.

I had a mental block cause since my achilles and calf injury I've been leary of running fast cause I had it in my head that everytime I ran fast I was gonna get hurt.

So I am excited that I have no pain at all.

The cool thing about it is....U can always get in shape. So I'm sure by now you have started seeing some results and their is no feeling in the world well maybe other than Sex like workin out hard and seeing results.

If u ever feel like u don't wanna continue just remember, it only takes about an hour a day, hell 30 minutes a day to stay in decent shape.  No one in the world in my opinion has an excuse for not being in some kind of shape.

...unless you have some sort of medical condition that renders you unable to exercise.  But yeah, for the most part, there's no excuse.  It's not even like you have to be a food nazi either!  When you look around and see the terrible decisions people make about food along with inactivity, it teaches you some quick lessons.  I've got a friend in his mid 30's diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.  There's no excuse for that.  He ate like shit, never exercised, and now he's got a disease that will attack not only his body, but his mind as time moves on.  Such a waste.  :(   The cigarettes will be sure to help him too.  ::)

I can understand how people let them selves get so far gone. cause u feel so bad about yourself it just snowballs cause u dont think there is a way out.

I have lost over 75 pounds and I havent went hungry not one time

Running is awesome cause it allows u to eat shit that normal everyday folks can't eat if they are on a diet.

That is freaking awesome!  Losing 75 pounds is awesome.  It reminds me of my buddy who's about 260 now (he was about 225 getting married 5 years ago), and he's coming down for a sprint triathlon next month.  I think I'm more excited about his 1st one than my 1st one!

And yeah, being able to eat what you want and not have to pay the price with a big gut is great.  The funny part is, now that I've been doing all the running, biking, and swimming, I don't crave the junk as much.  That's not to say I don't over-indulge every now and again, but yeah, it makes life alot easier!  At my heaviest I was 208.  I think it was the stress of college along with just being married (fat and happy.  :) )   Little Debbie (that whore) was the other woman in my marriage.  Making a cake box full of lemon cupcakes and smearing them with a whole container of lemon frosting would supply a snack for football Sunday.  Looking back, it's disturbing!?!

7.25 miles tonight.  That's 5 laps around my neighborhood...nice easy pace with the last lap the fastest.     3 or 4 mugs o' sherbet to celebrate.   :peace:

Title: Re: Running
Post by: D on September 09, 2006, 12:12:37 AM
Im like that also with junk food. Sometimes I dont crave it but then Ill have a little stretch of about 2 or 3 days where I do and usually I'll let myself have some just so I can get over it and move on.? Its worked for me so far so I see no reason in changing? yet.

Fat and Happy....... why does that happen? It does though, when u get happy and content at first its like everyone I know goes to hell shape wise at first...... thats interesting....

I hope your friend does well. I love hearing stories of people setting goals, workin their ass off and accomplishing them. It inspires and motivates me like u wouldn't believe.

I can't wait to build back up to where I do long runs.

I wish I would've listened at the beginning to your advice and took it easy.? I tried to do too much too soon and paid the price.

I basically started over from scratch and Im gonna do like the experts recommend and increase my mileage by 10 percent a week.

So this week i am at 12 miles, next week 13 etc etc and I cant wait to get back to the 20 miles so I can do a super long run on Saturdays again.

I had this fear that if I didnt run as hard as I could everyday that I would get out of shape, get back fat and not be able to run again next time I tried.

I finally realized that I was being a moron.

So now, If I am sore, I relax, I added slow enjoyable runs to my routine so everything isnt a contest.

When u constantly compete against yourself it isnt any fun, it becomes like a job and extremely stressful to run and that is when u quit.

I wish I had listened sooner to u....... :hihi:

I am serious about that Music City Marathon.

I am hopin we can make that happen! What an amazing accomplishment and feeling to finish that!

Then we could take a pic together and post it on the Gallery. : ok:

How did the Sprint Tri go???????

D did you check your pm?  I figured tri-sports wouldn't be allowed in the running section...but, since the swimming portion was cancelled due to unsafe conditions, I'll go ahead!

I got 69th out of 327 overall.  I was 2nd out of 37 first-timers.  It was a very successful day.  Overall time was 1:17:57.  Distances were 1.5 mile run, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run.
On the 1st run I averaged a 7:10/mile pace, on the 14 mile bike I averaged 20.7 m.p.h., and on the last 3.1 mile run I averaged a 7:09/mile pace.  It was a freaking blast, and I'm more psyched than ever about next year's Half-Ironman race!

The only thing that would have made my race "Better," would have been having a GNR themed racing shirt.  A dude there had a Rolling Stones one...imagine being a fan of a band that has new merchandise!   :crying:

Abs take time as well.  Just get on a consistent ab program..... I struggle with that myself.

Just keep running and try to do some abs everday or every other day if possible and it takes time but eventually it will happen.

The guy I know who did an IronMan race and many more half irons and regular triathlons, has told me you shouldn't over-do ab training.  The abs can become so taut, they can inhibit your diaphragmatic breathing on longer races.  I take this further by not doing any ab training!  I really should do a little bit.   :peace:

Mr. Dick Purple, congrats on the newfound endurance.  Being in shape feels so much better than the alternative.

Very cool D!  That's a damn good pace.  Keep up the good work.
Unfortunately, I've been binging on the Halloween candy!  I went through 4 or 5 bags of the crap.  Gummi Lifesavers, tootsie rolls, Baby Ruths, Butterfingers, Twizzlers, and my favorite...Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.  (my wife helped on the Twizzlers and Tootsie rolls)  :)   Surprise, surprise, after binging like this, I went out for a run on Saturday and injured my calf.  Nothing serious, but enough to make me walk back home.  I got what I deserved.  It's just a strain, nothing serious...hopefully it doesn't do to me what a calf strain did to Andre Johnson of the Texans last year!  I'll be substituting running with swimming and biking this week.

Also, since they screwed up at the sprint triathlon race I was in 3 weeks ago, I got my award in the mail today.  2nd out of the 37 first-timers.  I was definitely psyched.

That's it, I just thought of something.  I'll wear my heart rate monitor to the GNR show!  I guarantee it will be pretty damn high.  Of course the ballads will bring down the average, but it will be interesting to me!  :D

D, keep kickin' ass.  Nashville marathon, '09!!!  GNR represented!  All we have to do is get GNR to license athletic wear dammit!  That would be totally fucking cool.  8)

My goal is to run the Atlanta Marathon when I am 30.

Well, you've definitely cleared 30 by now... did you ever end up running a marathon over the past few years?

I've got a mild running addiction that I've developed thanks to Nike+... I've been using their GPS sportswatch and logging my stats on their website.  It's amazing how motivated I can get just to earn stupid trophies on their website, but the payoff in terms of my health and fitness has been amazing.

Signed up for my first half marathon, which I am going to run this coming January.  I can log serious miles without issue now...  I'll usually have one run each week that's about 12-15K (7-9 miles) and a bunch of shorter runs.  I notice my pace getting stronger which is awesome, I can comfortably run 10k in 45 min - so my goal for the half would be to finish under 1.5 hours.

Anyone ever end up running a full marathon that could share a story or maybe some tips?

Title: Re: Running

I ended up running Nashville Half Marathon in 2008 in 1 Hour 57 minutes and 11 secs at 205lbs....

Unfortunately injuries mixed with school have kicked my ass over the past few years and I gained some weight and got out of it for a bit... Im attempting a come back however cause I miss it so much.

Good luck with everything. Running is hard and sucks at first but once u GET IT, what an amazing high and spiritual experience.

tip on Half... U will be sooooooo fucking pumped with all those other people and so much adrenaline will be flowing.. u gotta keep your pace.. I've seen people let it get the best of them and they take off and blow themselves up halfway through...

D, glad you kicked ass in '08.  That was a bad year for me...had effing patellar tendonitis for months, followed by a torn meniscus, got scoped...rehabbed into '09...finally up to full speed by the end of '09.
'10 was my first 140.6, and in '11 I finished my 2nd 70.3 which bested my '07 70.3.  I've got 2 70.3's scheduled for '13.  Knock on wood...STAY HEALTHY!

Easy E, I haven't attempted a stand-alone marathon yet, but I have done 2 formal halves, along with several training runs in excess of 13.1 miles.  The big messages I have for ya are:  ramp up slowly.  listen to your body.  eat right.  decrease stress in your life (stress sets you up for injury), get 7-8 hours of sleep a night on average, don't cram training into a tight window...give yourself plenty of time (start training early!), and you won't like this one...don't set a time goal.  A pace is one thing.  No prob there.  Just go out and run the race you can run that day!  If it's your 1st, relax!  Have fun!  Next time you run 13.1, THEN you'll have a target to beat, how's that?  :)

Yeah, I'm already concerned with doing too much, too soon at the start of the race.  I'm going to try and hold a steady pace that I use on my long runs (luckily my GPS will tell me how fast I'm going so I don't get overwhelmed at first if people are passing me).  I'm hoping to go all out for the last few miles.  I need to be careful adjusting to the warm weather too... I'm running in 0 degree weather now, but the race is going to be 23 degrees sunshine (hopefully).  Need to be careful of dehydration...

I've heard the advice of just finishing your first race with no goal, and I'm fine with that.  I'm still going to push myself, but I've pulled back on my training a couple of times when I felt like I might injure myself.  I won't be upset if I miss my target... no matter what I get a PR if I finish! haha

Finished the Miami half marathon last week in 1:44:21.. was slowed a little by the heat, but I'm very happy with that time.  According to the stats I'm top 11% for my age, 9% for gender and 6% overall.

Overall pain was minimal, can't wait to do another race!  I'm tempted to sign up for a full, but I think I will run another half beforehand.  I feel like I need another goal so I can keep this fitness up!  Thanks for the tips D & Axl4Prez

CONGRATS!  You broke 1:45...very nice sir!
I'm always happy to offer advice...now if I could only consistently follow my own advice!   :hihi:

Personally, I had my best volume month since August, 2011 in January, 2013.  Now, the challenge will be to gradually bump it up!

Clocked a net time of 1:34:02 in a half marathon this past weekend!! ..... Huge improvement over my last one.  Top 3% overall, what a race!

I think I'm ready to start researching a full marathon.  I'm thinking about Big Sur - scenery looks awesome, but I'm not sure I can handle the hills.
