What song got you into gnr? Was it WTTJ or SCOM or PC, or was it possibly a later song? YCBM perhaps and T2

I think it was 88 or 89, PC got me hooked, then I jumped over to LIES, with the intro "this is a song about your f'ing mother" on repeat. :rofl:

Interesting note, in Norway.... LIES debuten on the chart before Appetite !!

i use to watch night tracks that came on in the late 80's on WTBS

i saw SCOM come on and i thought it was corny and goofy

i heard it again the next week thought it was the gayest shit i had ever heard

but i couldnt stop thinkin about it, i hated it so much i liked it, my brother and i would cringe when we saw the video cause we both hated it

couple days later we both came home from the record store and each had a 45 single of SCOM, we both smiled at each other and said "i cant believe u bought that, then PC came out i bought that 45, wttj bought that 45, not for sure which order, i was to big of a bon jovi fan to give a fuck about GNR

years later my brothers friend told me the phenomenon that was GNR and how they had 2 cds comin out on the same day

i bought uyi 2 cause i had heard ycbm on terminator 2, i had heard of kohd and dont cry was on both so i figured id get it first since it was most familiar, ive been hooked since!

For me it was Sweet Child O' Mine. I caught the video on MTV on some flashback show to the 80's I think, around 95 or 96 and I immediately fell in love with both the band and that song. I was absolutely hooked on the song, and am now even more so. Pretty much ever since then Ive purchased all of GnR's recordings and have become fixated and perhaps at times obsessed with both the previous line-up and even more so by the new one. Each new bandmember is so intriguing to me I look forward to Chinese Democracy every passing day.

I got into GN'R around 92/early 93 and I was 7 or 8 years old......It was PAradise City that got me hooked.

Back in 1990-1993, my mom used to listen to Appetite for Destruction all the time and so I always knew what was on that album.

So, around December 2003, I bought AFD for myself and then I bought the remaining albums including Live Era and I've been hooked ever since.

So, for me, it was just an album, not a particular song.

Essentially SCOM but it was November Rain that put the icing on the cake.

Let's see.....

Now I remember. It was that hit song "Silkworms". I remember listening to this unknown rock n' roll band play some festival in Brazil in 2001 and they played a song called "Silkworms". I was instantly hooked to this band and have been looking for a studio version ever since.

Hearing Paradise City literally everyday on the old school bus. Singing "Take me down to the paradise city, where the weed is green and the girls are shitty"

About four years ago I was hoaking through my big sisters CD collection looking for something good and I found AFD. I thought "cool cover" and put it on. When it got to Paradise City I was like "That sounds familiar".

My sister told me that she used to listen to that song over and over when I was a baby and that it made me smile. ;)

November Rain, about 1998'ish.   I liked it so checked out a few more songs, came across Sweet Child O' Mine and was blown away right off the mark...instant hit with me.   Then Welcome To The Jungle and You Could Be Mine, that was it for me I knew I would eventually have the albums which I do.

Guns N' Roses to me were one of the best rock bands ever, Appetite For Destruction is an essential album for any rock fan out there.   I've never taken to the new line up, I ain't against them either but they ain't done shit, there is no album out.   Then I hate seeing people diss Slash, Duff or any original ex-member which just works towards me having a dislike for the new line up, which I really don't but you know it gets to ya.

The voice, the riff, and the vid just completely overwhelmed me  :)  I think I was about 9 or so?? Not sure  :hihi:  I managed to aquire AFD and just listened to that tape over and over and over.......

At some point or another, I was aware of GN'R but dismissed them as "just another band"... it wasn't until this year that I decided to download WTTJ, SCOM and PD... and I was blown away by the brilliance of these songs. Soon enough, AFD was on repeat in my CD player and I listen to it many times a day now. It's amazing!!  :love:

It has to be Sweet Child O' Mine for me I remember I just caught it on TV and I was hooked and Slash made me go  :drool: I was like play that again and it influenced me to play guitar and I still love that song to this day.

My first experience with Guns N' Roses was sometimes in '88 or '89. A friend of mine came rushing in with a videotape, and from all his excitement I figured it must be porn. Instead of nudity I saw a rock band I knew nothing of. The singer had huge sunglasses on and he sounded very scratchy, and I wasn't really impressed immediately. It was the MTV Ritz show.

The same friend also did an impressive Commodore 64 version of SCOM's intro with my computer. C64 only had these three sound channels, and he did the riff, the opening bass line and some rhythm chords with those three channels and looped it to play over and over again. I had never heard the actual song (except sort of unknowingly in that Ritz video), but that little computer ditty intrigued me. But in those days it wasn't exactly possible to go online and download the song you wanted to hear...

A few months later I noticed Paradise City on one of my sister's mix tapes she had taped from the radio. I started to listen to that one song, for the first time hearing the band's studio work. I remember thinking that the song must be an old song from the 70's or something, because wasps and twistedsisters and m?tleycr?es didn't sound like that at all.

Soon after that I had been poked with Guns N' Roses stuff so much that even though I knew absolutely nothing about the band, I just found myself making a trip to a record store
to buy an album by this band. I went to 'G' and saw Lies. I looked at the song list and a couple of the song titles seemed vaguely familiar (which probably wasn't true at the time) and even though there was no Paradise City, I bought it. The same friend again said that Lies is cool, but there is another album that is much better. And about a week later I got Appetite.

Long story short,  for me it was Paradise City in around '88 or '89, because "they don't make songs this good any more". But they did.

It was "My World" that did it for me.

The only reason I'm so interested in Guns N' Roses is because of the promise of the new brand and the unique type of music they've been able to produce so far.

Listening to the old stuff has just been a way for me to pass the time (not that I don't love it as well) while I wait.

I always had heard of WTTJ but thought very little of it.

Then i heard SCOM on the end of the Big Daddy soundtrack and loved it

Then i heard PC on MTV2 and thought it was excellent and when i heard it was GNR i bought of all albums Live Era first so i worked my way backwards thru the albums

SCOM = me finding the coralation between my favorite movie and YCBM = purchasing Live Era = Estranged = 2002 VMA's = hardcore fan ever since

Mine was SCOM back in 88. I posted the story a couple of times, but I don't mind doing it again. A friend of mine had just gone to Ireland to spend the summer and brought back AFD ( with he original cover) We were not really into heavy music then ( shit, I was 12) so all we'd listen was from Geroge Michael, to Jacko or Inxs.

I loved SCOM from the very first moment I heard it. Then Paradise City and Think About You cause it came right before Sweet Child ( remember, this was vynil...)

In '89, my older cousin showed me the AFD cassette and told me how awesomely bad-ass Axl & Slash were.  Then I heard WTTJ, SCOM, and all the rest.  I was only 10 so I didnt get the lyrics.  But I did sing along to Paradise City.  Ahh, the memories.

Hey Chinasky, do you remember what you thought when you first saw the original rape cover?  At that time I didnt even know what rape meant, so I just wondered why the girl was lying there with her underwear around her ankles.  I thought the robot was really cool.  :rofl:

It's the first day of school, September 87'. A new kid has moved to town, his name is Jesse Janes. He walks into class and the first thing out of his mouth is....."Welcome to the Jungle, we've got fun and games"
I said to my self, what is wrong with this fucking kid?? We've got fun and games??? What kind of shit is that?
After a few days he had brought a small boom box to school with the AFD Cassette. When I heard the opening riff to WTTJ I couldn't believe what I was hearing, and I had to hear more. The next day I pedaled my bike down to Strawberries and bought AFD, that started the addiction that has gripped my life for the past 17 years

I will never forget this as long as I live.. It was right after Christmas Break in school.. early '87.. this kid on the bus (who's older brother lived in L.A. apparently) was playing a tape on his walkman.  It turned out it was a cassette copy of Live Like a Suicide.. like 3 or 4 generations old, at least - sounded like crap... I said "what are you listening to" he said "a band my brother likes, Guns n' Roses" - so I asked if I could listen.. I slipped on the head phones and it was "Nice Boys".. for some reason.. perhaps due to my adolescence, perhaps the music, perhaps the lyrics.. perhaps an amazing combo of everything, it 'clicked' with me.  I asked the kid for a copy of the tape.  The prick charged me 5 bucks, but I got my GNR fix :)

(And then, when my Aunt bought me AFD as a gift.. well.. lets just say my family was very much regretting buying me the kickin' stereo for the bedroom :)  )

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was living at home and had no car. I was laying on the couch and MTV was premiering the new gnr song "sweet child". I kind of likes jungle, so I thought I would give it a shot. After the song played, I thought to myself that this was the best song I have ever heard! I ran upstairs, borrowed my moms car, and went and bought the album. They have been my favorite band ever since!

KOHD was on TV (the clip from the Freddie tribute) and I thought Axl was the coolest motherfucker ever!

I had heard all the hits, but never got into the band until my best friend showed me UYI2...the "suck my ass..." line was hilarious and brilliant...I bought the albums the next week and never looked back  : ok:

Back in 2000ish I was making a mixed rock cd from napster. I new of WTTJ and PC but only hear dthem occasionaly. I put those 2 songs on because I figured they were good anthem type songs. Then I said you know what let me find out what else this band plays. DOwnloaded a bunch of songs off Napster. I played Dust N Bones and ever since then Ive been hooked. I was like wow this isnt even supposed to be a ht and its a great song. Within that yr I bought all of the albums, listened to them about a zillion times. Then I said I should check out a bootleg. I was blown away by Axls performance.

I was addicted to GNR. SO i searched the internet and found sites like these. ANd just read, read and read about the band and its history. I have probably read everything on gnr.

As the months went on I began to become fascinated with Axl. His music, personality etc. As I scoured the sites I found out about RIO3. I remember downloading the clips of the new songs on my shitty ass modem and being amazed by it. Then I bought the tape and the rest is history.

Then I discovered the message boards and just read them and never registered or anything. Just observed. then about a year later I began to get involved. Particularly on old cd.com and gnrx...i have always read this site but never joined. enough  of that...

it was 96 or 97...school was out so my brother and I were staying up late and he had rented the use your illusion vhs'....so he plugged them in and told me to sit and watch.  I myself never listened to music at that time, and new nothing of GNR....

I remember listening and thinking that guy has a very scratchy voice....but quickly found myself really getting into it...(as was my brother)...we watched both tapes back to back and I remember afterwards saying to my brother that I wished it was longer   :hihi:

A couple weeks later we were watching the best videos of the 90's or something like that ...and november rain was like #2 I think....and I loved it....so a couple days later I went and bought that CD....loved it and quickly got all the rest of them.

My brother was only a casual GNR fan...he bought AFD and the 2 illusioin CD's and that's it.....I became much more of a hardcore fan...but it was in a lot of ways thanks to him that I became a fan.

For me it was when I heard Knockin on Heaven's Door playin in my older brother's car.

I remember when I was maybe 8 or 9, my cousin was telling me all about this band he liked called Guns N' Roses. This was after AFD came out. I don't remeber much of the conversation or anything. I just remember talking about it. I know I had AFD and Illusion 1 and 2 on tape. I'm not sure when I bought them. But I remember the song that got me there. I flipped on MTV one day, and saw November Rain. I watched the entire video, having no clue who it was. When it was over, and the little thing came on the TV saying it was GN'R, I knew I had to have their music. I thought Axl was amazing. I guess I became somewhat obsessed. Of course my timing was all wrong. I started really following them in '90 something, right when they broke up. I have been faithful since then. Novwmber Rain still pulls at me every time I listen to it, although I have to say my favorite song by far is Sweet Child.

The first video I saw was 'Welcome to the Jungle', it must have been early 1988 (?). Soon after I got the vinyl. But what really blew me away was the live version of 'Knockin' on heaven's door' from the Ritz. They played that video repeatedly on MTV Europe back then. I couldn't wait to see them live, which I did in 1991 in Mannheim, Germany: my first concert ever!!!

WTTJ when it 1st came out/ funny story my daughter  who is in catholic school 3rd grade who i never introduced gnr came home a couple of month's ago and asked me if i ever heard of a song where they say the grass is green and the girl's are pretty cuz she and her freind's  were singin it on the school bus . now she goe's crazy when she hear's it . i guess all girl's love that song lol.then she heard WTTJ on the radio the other day and said mom thats gnr isnt it? i know it is cuz it sound's like the same singer that sing's PC.

Around '89, when I listened to SCOM. Then my dad's wife bought AFD and Lies, and I started to listen to them. Mr. Brownstone hook me up because it was too fast and furious... But then, I listened to Rocket Queen. I thought "wow, is that a girl having sex?".  :rofl:

Sweet Child of Mine and November Rain, seeing them on Kerrang! in the UK around 2001 got me hooked and then seeing them live at Leeds fest!

To be quite honest, the only thing we kept thinking about was the girls boobs. I know it's disgusting to even think about that, but what the hell? she had perfect tits ( Yeah I like I was an expert then :hihi: and I was 12!!!

Now that I'm looking at the cover, I love the mini-red sperm shaped creatures coming out of the bigger robot.

WTTJ was the song that started it all for me.  I am 27 years old and I have loved GNR since the day they came out.  However, my Bad Obession with GNR started the first time I heard Estranged.  I remeber very well.  I was lying on the floor next to my boom box listening to the song and I began to drift.  Then it ended and I sort of came back to reality.  And all I could think is I gotta hear that again.  I hit the back button on the cd player and I have never been the same since.  And that is not a stupid saying or something cute.  I have never been the same since.  Honest truth.  

Back in the day, my Uncle lived out in LA.  In early '87, he sent me a cassette boot of Live Like a Suicide (which, FYI, I still own, though it sounds like crap). He used to do stuff like that all the time, because we had very similar tastes in music. I was completely blown away.  It wasn't any one song, but all 4, with Move to the City being my favorite, if I had to choose.  I wouldn't say I was quite hooked yet, but I was damn close.

The first song I heard off Appetite was My Michelle.  THAT'S what hooked me.  That song is still a nostalgic favorite.

I remember my friends talking about this song called Sweet Child O'Mine during a Museum visit with my school. I recognized the chorus but didn't care much for the song at the time. A little while later I had my first taste of Paradise City (saw the video on MTV) and was like..."Whoa! Now this is real Rock N' Roll. This is some RADICAL shit!" (Yes, I'm sure I used the word 'radical'  :hihi: ). It wasn't until a few weeks after that that I realized SCOM and PC were both GN'R songs.

Never the less, I still hadn't bought the album.

Then I remember the trailer for The Dead Pool and Welcome to the Jungle being played in the background. I remember thinking this could possibly be even better than PC.

Still...no album.

I must have been asleep when Patience came out (vaguley remember it on the radio/MTV). It wasn't until my friend called me up and was like "Dude, you gotta come over. I just taped this video off of MTV and it has all these cool scenes from Terminator 2!" (this was just before the movie came out and we *my friends and I* were chomping at the bit to see it). As soon as I saw the video I knew it was the final straw. Another awesome GN'R song. I had to go out and pick it up ASAP! Although the T2 soundtrack was released, I bought it without carefully reading the tracks on it. Needless to say...no YCBM on it...it was all instrumental. A week or two later I found YCBM on single (with Civil War as the B-Side). I wore the damn tape out by the end of that summer (and saw T2 three times in the theaters).

September came around and it was back to school and when the Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 came out, I immediately picked up the 2 (as it had YCBM and Civil War on it). Next came Appetite For Destruction, then UI1, then Lies.

So...a short answer to your question  :hihi: ... I guess I'd have to say YCBM because it was the song that finally made me go out and start buying their music. As for the first song that I was 'turned onto'...that would have to be Paradise City  : ok:

Ahhhh, the good old days.

The first GNR song I heard was Paradise City when I was about 9. I saw the video on tv and thought the band and the song were the coolest thing I'd ever seen/heard. My main memory was the riff, the chorus, and Axl in all white with those shades.

Unfortunately I couldn't go out and buy albums/etc at that age so the whole AFD thing passed me by untill I met this girl when I was 11. Man, she was so fucking fit and she was a huge Guns fan and always seemed to be wearing a bandana and GNR t-shirts. She looked great. The second CD I ever bought was AFD because of her, after that I was hooked.... and the rest, as they say, is history.....

Oh, and the girl....... she slipped away and I missed my chance  :'(

SCOM! I saw the video last year in about september and I thought the song was great! But I didn't get totally hooked till a couple of months ago when my Dad gave me his copy of AFD.

One of the earliest memories I have about GNR was on a family vacation in the late '80s.  We couldn't find anyplace to get lunch except for a KFC restaurant.  We went inside and they were blaring Paradise City on their soundsystem.  I was taken aback by how raw it sounded compared to the other music I listened to.  It wasn't long until I went out and bought AFD so I could discover what GNR was all about.  

I wish I heard more good music like that in today's restaurants!

After buying AFD out of curiosity, I put that fucker on, and was immedately blown away by Welcome To The Jungle.

But to be honest, it could have been any GNR song that could have hooked me.  WTTJ just happened to be the first.


I would say the song that gave me the confidence in Axl and what he's doing was "Oh My God".  That song made me go "Wow.  Axl's GNR is going to be huge".  It blew me away.  I had visions.  I saw deep into that song.

It was either Sweet Child O'mine or Paradise City can't remember which i heard first but they were the first GNR songs i ever heard.....way back when i was 8, godamnit where does the time go......

Already put my post in, but I remember the first time I heard Appetite for Destruction, the day I bought it I came home put it on and lay down on my bed cause I hadn't stopped all day.   I wasn't planning on laying there and listening to the entire album, I had a few things to do and could've got them done while it was playing but once Welcome to the Jungle kicked in...I never moved and before I knew it the album had played out and I was still laying on my bed, it had grabbed a hold of me and wasn't letting go.   I was lost in the music, it was such an impactful album.   I hit play again to start the album over and listened to it again while going about getting a few things done, but hearing it fully without distraction for the first time was something.

Later when I was ready to crash, I slipped the headphones on and took in some more!   That album got played, and played, and played for about 2 weeks...not one of my other CD's got a look in.

Welcome to the Jungle, then Paradise City.  About three years ago, WTTJ would always be played as I stepped on the ice for my HS hockey games.  I always thought this was a great song to start a game.  Christmas 2001, I got the Live Era CD from my friend just b/c it had Jungle on it.  Then, I would hear Paradise City on the radio.  I realized it was them, then listened to it on Live Era over and over.  Later, I got Appetite and began listening to the other songs on Live Era, bought all the albums, and being a big fan began....

It's kinda weird to think someone just recently got into the band.. GNR's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, it's sorda always been there.

1988-89'ish. I was in high school, working part-time after school at a hardware store. One afternoon I was in a back room painting a wall. I heard a song come on the radio. Didn't know the singers voice at the time, and never really paid attention to their albums. I found out later from a friend that the song was "I Will Not Go Quietly" by Don Henley. The song is really good in its own right, but it was Axl's voice that stuck out for me in that song. It was the first time I'd ever heard him sing, and his back-up singing in that song is what turned me on to GnR. (For those who aren't aware, Axl Rose sings back-up vocals in that song.) As the old cliche goes...the rest is history.

my brother bought both albums, so I listened to the whole albums actually. but I think CW was the one I liked the best first time I heared it.

My story really isn't all that good. I'm 16 (turning 17),and it was about 3-4 years ago that i got into Gn'R, so some here will call me a young Gunner, but Gunner I am! Anyway it started when victor (who happens to be from Brasil)came here to Canada. His dad had a whole bunch of classic rock cds, i asked if he can record some songs for me."what songs do you wanna have on it" Suprise me i said. oddly enough the last two songs on it were Civil War (first song i ever heard) and KOHD. And from then on,rether it be AFD, UYI 1 & 2, LIES,or any other,there has always been a Gn'R cd in my player.

I still chuckle at how I missed the whole Gnr implosion in the late 80's, but I have been in love with Axl ever since I watched the November Rain video on an Mtv rockumentary back in 1992. :love:

I feel terible for the people who got into GnR in the late 90's and even after the new band formed. You have always know this band as the disapointment they have been recently. You never got to see GnR open for a band, only to watch them totally steal the show from the headliner. I was at an Aerosmith concert, in Aerosmith's hometown and watched them completely blow Aerosmith away.

I'm not trying to tear apart the new lineup, but you have never truely known Guns N' Roses as "The Most Dangerous Band in the World." I know people like younggunner get bent out of shape when an older fan can't seem to embrace the new line up like they do the old lineup, but you can't understand what this band was from 87-93 without experiencing it. I know most of the older fans have become "Rain Man" like historians of the bands past......but a DVD of the band at the Ritz in 88' just doesn't fill you with the same emotion as seeing them live in 88'.

Its not that I get bent out of shape if old fans cant embrace the new band. Its that when the old fans disregard the new lineup for ignorant reasons.

Its not my fault I wasnt old enough to experience old gnr. I wish I could have. With that being said Im fully aware of the impact they had. Trust me I am.

Im not expecting everyone to fall head over heels for this new lineup. They have to put up bigtime with the material they make. BUt I also dont have to hear people disregard them because peopel of the past arent here. The past is over and nothing can change that. Whether the band name stayed or was new, the same people would still think Axl broke up gnr and the band with him would still be thought of as replacing the old band.
If they ever get their act together and release the album then the music can do the talking and judging.

The new lineup will never have the impact old gnr had in regards to becoming so big. Even if the material is past expectations and is better than AFD or the Illusions. Its such a different musical climate no rock band can achieve what was once achieved. BUt this band can put out a great album. What if its better than AFD? Thenwhat? What does that mean in regards to the old lineup? They are chop liver? Axl is the reason?
To me it would mean GNR would have two completely different eras with 2 things in common. Axl Rose and  Great music. ANd when its all said and done, thats what its about. Great music.

I heard welcome to the jungle on the radio one day when I was in fourth grade and I've been hooked ever since, my mom even took me out of school to go and buy Appetite.  The greatest band in the world will soon return and give me back my faith in good rock and roll.

When I was a kid (7 or 8 years old), my oldest brother used to buy blank cassette tapes and record one of his favorite songs over and over on that one blank cassette. Well, he had the Patience tape, which he played every time he had a bad fight with his girlfriend, which, was quite often. So, I was constantly hearing "Patience" coming from his room. And, it just grew on me and became one of my favorites as well.

I saw the video four or five years back on TV and i really liked it but i missed the first 30 sec so i didn?t saw which band played that song. Then i started to search that song from the net and i found out that it was a band called Guns n?Roses.
Then i found one GnR record which was Appetite for Destruction and it contained PC. I bought it and realized that it was the greatest fucking music on earth.

For me it was the Terminator 2 movie. I was 7 years old and the music that kid was listenening on his bike was the best I'd evear heard.

Ive been into GNR for about 3-4 years, and in no way can i appreciate the new band, not all the time they butcher the original songs. Im sorry but GNR isnt GNR without Slash, Duff, Izzy and Matt(so we get songs off UYI's too). Thats why there is no GNR n e more to me

I remember my local radio station having a hot 9 at 9.  WTTJ was on the countdown for a while.  This was before Appetite broke.  And then thinking to myself I wish they would play that song WTTJ by GNR again.  Then suddenly it reappeared in the countdown just as GNR hit the big time.  It was so weird how I wanted to hear the song one day and then the next it was played and then the GNR we came to know and love broke big time.  I felt like a prophet.

I bought Use Your Illusion II on a whim during the winter of 2002... I wasn't paying much attention to the music scene, and I heard of GNR making a quasi-come back in 2002 with the tour. So I bought the album out of curiousity.

Right from the beginning, "Civil War" grabbed me, and then I heard "14 Years," and I knew that I'd found a very special talent in Axl, Izzy, Slash, and co.

As for New GNR, I downloaded Madagascar, and was totally blown away. I did some research, and discovered this little album called "Chinese Democracy" that was in the works...

Since then, I've bought and been researching anything and everything GNR.

I remember seeing SCOM back in 1988 on Video Hits in Australia and cringing at it because I thought the singer looked and sounded like a knob! Little did I know that years later they'd become my favourite band in the world...

Fast forward to 1992 and YCBM was released to coincide with T2. I heard it a few times on the radio and taped it onto cassette, listening to it on constant repeat.
I couldn't get over how heavy and in-yer-face it was, but with this amazing hook, melody and catchiness to it. I then got UYI2 and worked my way back through all the albums.

Been a fan ever since. :beer:

I had heard Patience, SCOM and Paradise City and videos. But the thing that got me to gnr was an picture of axl on stage performing. There was something in his eyes, madness, or something. That made me to read more about them etc. Then one saturday night radio played new song " estranged" and iwas blown away.

I was on a bus for some kind of field trip in late '87.  A bunch of girls had a boombox and kept listening to George Michael...they had "Faith" pretty much repeating ad nauseum while they all sang along.  This one friend who was on the wrestling team with me said, "Fuck this....I've GOTTA listen to Guns n' Roses" and put a tape in his walkman.  I looked at him strangely...I'd never heard of Gn'R. The "Faith" girls were pretty hot, though, so I focused on them.
Few weeks/months later, I saw the vid for SCOM on MTV.  Thought the band looked cool, liked Axl's voice, but as a kid of 15, I didn't really get the "Where do we go now?" part and sort of blew it off, then found myself turning it up on the radio the next day and thinking, "Damn, this is a good song!"
Still wasn't into the band.
My friend Phil and I went to see Halloween IV in the theater, with Phil's uncle who was 19.  Phil put AFD into the tape deck in the car...I asked when SCOM was gonna play; he told me to keep listening.
"Out Ta Get Me" and "My Michelle" were the hooks.  They may still be my favorite Guns tracks.  They were my favorite band IMMEDIATELY upon hearing those songs.
That night, I became a man. ;D

I married a girl from my high school class; a chick that was friends with Phil and me.  She still claims she doesn't get my Gn'R obsession, but I did catch her singing "Bad Apples" to the dog the other day.

well for me it all began when i was roughly 6.......i was born in 85......and all i can remember is listneing to AFD with my lil bro....i could have been 7.i dont fuckin remember lol....my momy had the cassette and we played the fuck out of it.i loved the part in its so easy when he says to "fuck off"..and of course the sex noises in rocket queen......then as i got older i learned that they had a whole other bunch of songs and rediscovered Gnr bout 4 years ago..... :o :P

For me it was probably about 88 it wasn't so much a song it was AFD my mom had it and I was only like 2 and I loved it I didn't really know what it all ment but I would sing along to it I knew almost the whole cd. I remember bringing it in show in tell like in kindergarten. It was bring your favorite tape in. Most kids had like pop stuff or older stuff there parents liked. I had AFD and I remember the teacher telling me we can't play this and back then I didn't know why and thought the teacher hated me.

A few years later during that big pop thing with spice girls and stuff I listened to that a lot because all my friends did but I knew I loved GN'R more then the pop stuff but anyway I got like 200$ for my 10th birthday and I told my mom I want to go pick up cds. She gave me that look like oh what crap are you buying this week. So I walked in the store and got all the albums AFD, LIES, UYI 1&2 AND TSI.(I knew the albums because my mom had all the cassettes)My mom just smiled and said that's music and from that point on the pop shit stopped and I just went with GN'R and got into all types of rock. Definitely changed my life for the better and I stopped listening to the spice girls. LOL : ok:

I bought compilation tapes (remember those?) called "hits of the movies". They had the compilation divided into love songs and action songs. As a 13 year old male it was fairly obvious which of those I would be interested in. I remember reading the back of the cover and seeing Bon Jovi "blaze of glory" from young guns on it, I thought it was a decent enough song but by no means outstanding. I played the tape again and instead of fast forwarding I played it all the way through and I remember with crystal clarity this insane drum solo intro, shredding guitars and then a voice that sounded like it came straight from hell, uncompromising, unforgiving and it kicked the s*it out of anything else on there, even the so called "rockers", "You could be mine" and I was.

That is an awesome description of Axl's voice.  :)

I also bought this compilation of Movies Hits (2 cds), and YCBM is on the second cd.  It also has tunes from U2, The Who and Van Morrison,etc.  But I bought it b/c of GNR.

the first time i saw the paradise city video. i must have been bout 12 or 13. i thought GNR were typical 80s rock band. i thought these guys must get along well, that singer looks like a nice bloke and he has acool voice, he prolly gets lots of ladies, this song rocks!!! i had no idea they were drug addicts. i had no idea they caused so much controversy. i didnt know axl was a freak and a jerk who beat up girls. u cant judge books by their covers.

The first time I heard guns was when I was 9 or 10 can't remember, cause my sister like too much SCOM so from that day I wanted to hear each GNR song which with the years I did. I always believe that they were unique in their style and no one can compare to them I still does.  : ok:

The first time I heard them, when SCOM was first released,  I was already well into my 20's.  I remember thinking they were going to be the next Stones or Zep, that they were going to be HUGE.  The first time I saw the video to SCOM, I was sold.  I loved the whole look - it was so different - all the leather, tattoos, hair, bandanas.  I remember thinking they were the biggest, most bad ass rock band I'd ever seen.  They were so cool.  Went out and bought AFD as soon as I could.  They were my favorite rock n' roll band.  That was my very first impression.  I remember that, at first, I always got Duff & Steven confused, and that I wondered what Slash really looked like under all that hair.  I knew who each member was, and bought every magazine they were featured in.  That was before the internet, back in the stone age, so we had to rely on magazines & MTV for information.       

Let's see...  In 1987/88 I must've been about 12ish.  I was really into rap.  I distinctly remember lying in bed one night with my headphones on.  Welcome To The Jungle comes on, and I'm like, "WTF is this???!!!"  The rest is history.

I misplaced UYI II with I when I first copied the CDs in 1999 and put it on track 4 to hear KOHD, but instead got a different song. At first I was going to stop the song, but then realized to myself that this song could have been a hit at one point for the band (which I turned out to be right on).

I still consider Don't Cry to be one of GNR's Top Songs Ever.

It's still one of my favourite GN'R songs, and it's the song that I usually "get back into" GN'R with when I haven't listened to them for a long time. It just always gets me, I love this song.

#10 on disc two of Live Era made me say that "GNR was my favorite band" back in the fall of 1999.  Madagascar made me an Internet groupie whore of GNR in 2002. 

Interesting that WTTJ isn't on more people's lists and that PC and SCOM got most people into GNR. 

SCOM or WTTJ, I don't remember. The first song I've heard was Nightrain, I didn't know I like it or not, then I bought Lies to decide (it was the only GN'R recording in the nearest shop). I didn't really like it (I was 12 then). Later I heard SCOM and WTTJ on the radio and I fell in love with their music.

WTJ, a cousin of mine gived me a tape of AFD. love at first sight or listen. I never eared anything like it, i must of played it a 100 times that day, my mother was going crazy. Til this day is the only foreign band she knows the name and recognizes the music n  Axl Rose's photo any were.
I later did had a giant poster of him in my room. Mom hated them she blamed them for every stupid think i did in the last years of my adolescence.

1988 , 11 years old- hearing SCOM on the radio and being blown away by the aching solos and that rough, uncompromising voice. Such character and feel. Next was PC, then Patience (which I couldn't believe was the same band at the time!), then finally a school friend lent me AFD and Lies on tape (which I dubbed) and that was the start of a musical obsession for me.

Kind of didnt listen to Guns from 95 - 02, it was Axls re-emergance in 02 and the internet that made me remember how great they were. History and time have been kind to Guns I feel - there was a period where they were terribly unfashionable, but I feel that has subsided and opinions have been reaccessed, and they rightfully are regarded as one of the great rock n roll bands

I cant remember, but I think it was the final part of the video November Rain, when Axl is almost crying when it rains over the coffin of her wife.

On the other hand Argentinians were making a lot of noise cause Guns N Roses were in their country so it was kind of contagious even to a 8 year old kid back then... (me)

couple years ago (99?) i heard WTTJ and i'm like "dude, these guys suck.  sha-na-na-na knees?  come on!  i don't wanna hear some high voiced faggot saying MWAH, either!".  then in...err...2000 perhaps, i tried em again (SCOM?) and liked it!

Same here, WTTJ didn't connect with me. But the more you hear it, the better it gets. Now it is on my list of favs.  SCOM and November Rain started it.  Madagascar reintroduced the band to me at the 02 VMAs.  Good stuff

My first  GNR song was November Rain. It drew me to GNR because I loved the solos and the extravagent movie-like video which made me wanna see more.


P.S. I heard Welcome to the Jungle before, but it's hard to avoid that being played at sports and wrestling events.

after growing up on Oasis, smashing pumpkins, and red hot chilli peppers, and Nirvana, and all of the music through the nineties, I began to thirst for something else.? Somthing with emotion, great song writing, and what I call today, real talent.? My first album that made me see the light of day or darkness if you will, was Black Sabbath's master of reality, and I told myself I will never listen to anything corperate ever again.?

I explored all the music of the 70's and was drawn to its beauty, and then I made a big jump over most of the eighties, until I stopped and listened to what my ears had been desiring.? Appetite for Destruction started to erupt on my stereo quite frequently,? wttj, was definately what started it all for me. The first track on the record, that welcomed everyone to what for me was the most dangerous and rebellious thing I had ever heard, then came scom and still to this day, I will get chill bunks when ever slash lays it down on that song.? I have never heard anything so pleasant, every song for me stands the test of time, and I can honestly say, I never get tired of them.? I know of no band that can draw me in and not let go, not even Pink floyd nor Zeppelin has done what Gnr did in my book.

Not trying to down the bands that came before, which had most likely given Gnr there inspiration, yet I feel Gnr just capitalized on that, and made a monster that could not be stopped, sadley, it crumbled from the inside.  I just wait for a day when Axl can redeem what once was lost, and bring forth again something that will turn the tides, and we can all enjoy some more years with our favorite band, Gnr.

p.s.  Its great to know Gnr has touched so many lives with music and not trying to get all emotional and soft, because I wouldnt want to dampen my street cred, lol, but its incredible to find people just like me, that inspite of our obsession, and yes (whether you like the thought of that or not, it being true),  we can come together and talk about a band that has undoubtedly effected us as fans, in a big way.  Our support for the band, although daunting, has been a great ride, and I feel in my heart the train will one day stop and we all will get off board, feeling a since of sadness, or relief for others, maybe a mixture of both.  But we are some of the most hardcore fans..... I think we should give our selves a round of applause for duking it out for this long, and supporting this band, which at times was hard, we are what makes the wheels turn.....

I think I've told my basic GNR story a few times. I just hope none of them were in this thread. I'm too lazy to check. I'll admit it. Well, anyway, I was pop-punk-liking nerd during my senior year of high school, and the fascist Indiana system led to me being expelled right before graduation. So I became a bit of a hermit. I spent a good portion of that time online or listening to CDs in my bedroom. Due to finding their major hits so catchy over the years, I decided to burn a GNR mix CD. My mom and friends had always listened to GNR, but I dismissed their music as ?just hair metal?. Well, I don?t know if it was my age, my state of mind at the time, or some other random factor, but for whatever reason, it blew me away this time. In particular, ?Estranged? made me think ?This band is so much more than I thought they were?? Zoom ahead a few years. I?m on a message board at 5am, telling my story to people who are just as fanatical as I am. Who would have guessed.

a friend of mine was into gnr back in 1992 or so, we were very young but we liked it because of the swearing, they had this thing called the "cd at 3" so we would stay up until 3am to hear it, they would play a whole cd and gnr wasnt rare... Get in the ring was a favourite, Fuck those times make me sad now, i remember the first time i smoked weed, listening to coma i think, great memories.... :'(

Well I got into GnR by listening to November Rain... I cleary remember the situation: It was the day a girl, I am sharing feelings with told me that she didn't want a relationship with me... Well I was heavily depressed and sat the whole day (a rainy october one) in front of the PC listening to shuffeled music. After November Rain was played, I immedeiately fall in love with that song and played it for the rest of the day... Perhaps about 20times...  :drool: Just to mention: The girl nevertheless became my girlfriend and still is!
After that particular day, I discovered bit by bit the GnR world. First November Rain, then Don't Cry, then Patience, and so on... But with buying AfD i recognized the harder side of GnR... Hell, what an experience! The whole Cd is imo near to perfection... Songs like WTTJ, PC; Nightrain, SCOM are so...  :drool:
 

I was at a New England Patriots game and they kept playing thos guitar riff. I really liked it, but that was the only part of the song I heard. About 6 months later I stumbled upon somethign and found out that riff was a song called "Welcome to the Jungle." Downloaded it. Loved it. Looked up their hits and downloaded a few more. Loved them all. Then I started buying all their CD's and fell in love. Turns out I had heard a few of the songs before (SCOM, PC) but didn't know what band it was or anything until then.

I wandered into a record shop and i bought the cheapest GN'R album i could find which happened to be AFD

well being a heavy hip hop rap fan...i flicked through the mtv channels and saw this video with one guy on the piano and another guy with his guitar on top of the piano...i didnt know what it was..so i changed the channel...when i changed the channel..it was on another mtv channel....in 1 hour they played the video 5-6 times...the vocals from axl and the guitar riffs from slash were just fantastic...november rain was awesome!! that made me into a guns n roses fan. one of the greatest songs and videos of all time.

I've always been into about every genre of music I could listen to ever since I was 3 or 4 years old.

As the 80s rolled on nothing changed. I would listen to Beastie Boys, then listen to Elvis, then Culture Club or Joe Jackson or something totally different.

One thing I wasn't very good at was actually finding new music on my own. Seeing as we didn't have cable television, I was pretty much confined to local pop and rock stations for introduction to new music and artists. I would also heavily rely on my older brothers for guidance seeing as they h ut it but it     ad access to things like cars and friends houses with cable and what not.

We were on our way to Cedar Point (because thats what people in Michigan do) and I saw a cassette in my brothers possession that said "Said G" & "Side R" on it instead of "Side A" and "Side B" per usual. When I asked about it, I was informed that it wasn't for me. There were things on there that I shouldn't hear at my tender age according to my brother.

Needless to say when we returned from Cedar Point I ran to Pace Warehouse with my sister (who didn't know any better) and bought Appetite on CD. Technically, the first GNR song that I heard was obviously Jungle but that's not the one that stuck with me. The one that stuck with me and had me coming back was Brownstone.

Just awesome, epic, pure rock and roll.

Man I was pumped for Illusions to be released. YCBM/Civil War T2 release did that (I didn't like Civil War much at the time but it grew on me).

Don't Cry became one of my all-time faves after Illusions finally came out.

Sweet Child O' Mine.  I can still remember seeing the video on MTV for the first time and being blown away, even in junior high.  GnR completely kicked the doors down and brought rock back to the forefront of music.  Paradise City followed, and Appetite became the only album I listened to.  All the rock magazines followed, as I read everything I could get my hands on...Welcome to the Jungle was the first song I learned on bass guitar.  Truly, GnR changed my life, and defined my high school years.

I remember not belieiving that it was Axl singing on Patience until I saw the video, devouring every song on "Lies" over and over, and feeling like the day the Illusion albums came out was a holiday.  I have several friends from high school that I still talk to today, and it's GnR - and those memories - that are the thread that keeps us connected.

Looking back, I think it's clear that Guns N Roses was the first band that showed me the power that music has to inspire.  They're the first band that made me want to pick up a guitar and write a song. 

It's funny how little has changed, even given the 10+ year absense.  Hearing "Better" for the first time this year was almost indescribable.  It took me back to that time in my life when Guns defined an era and spoke for a generation.  Axl's voice alone ("The hardest part...) plastered a smile on my face that couldn't be explained to anyone who wasn't there when GnR first broke.  Just to know that Axl was back, and even better - making great music - was an incredible feeling.

WTTJ - 1988 went to a band audition they asked me to sing WTTJ, it was breaking all over the radio in Dallas. I was like you can't be serious, that voice will never last. Yeah right... I went and saw them after that in Dallas then they vanished, Moved to London, came home they were back on MTV... Moved to LA to write rock operas with them a few years later. Never dawned on me that wasn't a good plan, since I didn't know them. Just figured I would find them.  Ah youth...crashed illusions and all at least my life has been lived....

WTTJ - Many Polaroid moments, and I still can't sing WTTJ but I can do that scream after living in LA, understand it all to well.

I heard a song coming from my sisters stereo, I go to her room and she yells what the hell do you want?? I said who's that on your stereo?? She replied Guns N Roses. I said "Guns and who??!!"... She screamed Guns N Roses!!!! My sister left later that day, and I went into her room and searched for the song that was playing...That song was called Rocket Queen. Though I loved what little I'd heard of Appetite, my friend Richard was a huge GNR fan when we were both 11(!). He played me UYI and I fell in love with Yesterdays and Don't Damn Me. He was a HUGE fan, had a guitar and bandana and absolutely idolised Axl and Slash. Sadly he died at 13 in an accident. I wish he was still around to check out this years shows with me.

This is really easy for me to answer, its was back in the summer of 87, I was on vacation in CAli, visiting family. Back then Knac was a huge rock station on the airwaves. While chilling with my cousinf driving around soutern cali in his mustang, I would keep hearing this tune(SCOM), being played but never from the begining almostalways from the solo to the end , where do we go know part. And never after the tune did the DJ, say who it as, and I was like I foota know who this is, this is so awesome! On my way home to NY, I had my sony walkman on sitting on the play getting ready to taxi, and I hear the opening of the song, knew intinctively the tune, and finally bthe dj announces this is southern Californias, GUNS N ROSES and this is sweet child of mine!. And needless to say once I got back to NY , the next day I went out and bought AFD, the rest is history!

the movie 'Lean On Me' was on HBO, I was probably six or seven in 89 and then they showed the run down school starting with graphite.  In the back they played welcome to the jungle, I convinced my dad to take me to the mall and bought appetite on cassette.  God the days of being young.  My life was forever changed.
