Title: Fort Minor
Post by: Izzy on November 24, 2005, 07:21:21 AM
Anyone got their new album?

For those that don't know its a Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park) side project.

The opportunity for some rap that isn't about gold chains and doesn't have videos featuring bimbos was too much for me to overlook

Its pretty good stuff, and by rap standards the best stuff in many years, the rhyming is a bit hit and miss, or down right absent in places, but there isn't a single metion of being a gangster so i can forgive it

I always thought Mike was the most talented part of Linkin Park and gave their songs a nice touch

Anyone got their album, what do u think?

Blah, blah, blah... there's plenty.

My friend is going to send me a couple of tracks so I can see what I think.  I hear Common is on one song so that's what I want to hear first.  I don't like Linkin Park so I'm not expecting much.

Names? Might be worth checking out.

Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Blackalicious, K-os, N.E.R.D. (rap/rock), Del Tha Funkee Homosapian, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Kardinal Offishall, Maestro Fresh Wes, Jurassic 5, and of course Kanye.

And how about the Beastie Boys or The Roots?

Come to think of it, most of the songs by big names like Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem, Outkast, etc. aren't about gold chains or hoes (though it definetaly slips in).

I would definetaly start by checking out Common's "Be"... Anyways, I'm still trying to track down this album.  Are you still listening to it?  Or is it one of these "only worth a couple of listens" albums?

I got it yesteday....damn good album!!
some good beats on cigarettes and In Stereo...and good songs in Kenji, Believe Me, Remember The Name....but overall good album, finally a rap album i could listen to cover to cover..normally there are way too many shit songs...
But Yeah, Eazy's right...Kanye, Eminem, Jay-Z, n.e.r.d and beasties have had some decent albums over the years but something about this one just clicked with me, so am really loving it!!

Indeed i am still listening, been listening all day

Its very strong, superb production - just fantastic tunes to rap over, Shinoda wrote every single note on the album, he's clearly blessed with a remarkable talent. There is no filler tracks here, no skits, remixes or the other crap that infuriates me with rap -? basically this is a rap album that takes note of all the daft sequences other rapper do and avoids them while doing all the things that make those same rappers good

The lyrics are more adult that Linkin Park, and are good standard throughout

The first single 'Believe me' is my fav so far, but there's plenty of stuff to match it.

It helps u see what he did for Linkin Park and the effect he had on their sound - not that this sounds like a Linkin Park album mind u

The track cigarettes is excellent - though i'm not sure if he's being sarcastic or not - bascially its about how he needs gangster rap songs like he needs a cigarette, sounds like he loves the stuff yet in all the interviews portrays himself as being the opposite of that crowd....

The next Linkin Park album should definetly move in this direction, more adult and confident and far less teen angst. Well done Mike!
