Football teams acquire rights from various publishers to pick and choose whatever songs they want.

They pay one flat fee every year to one or more publishers, let's say Interscope for example, and can play songs from that catalog of music without having to pay royalties.

So I'd guess Guns N' Roses gets money that filters in from the Interscope/Sanctuary catalog licensing - but not directly.

I'm a season Ticket Holder for the Pats. It's funny, they play a 4-5 song rotation throughout a game.

Welcome to the Jungle
Thunderstruck
Hells Bells
Machinehead
Rock and Roll Part ??? (by Gary Gliter)

You hear WTTJ probably 25-30 times durring a single game.

I'm curious, when the Raiders were in the super bowl a couple of years ago, and Axl was there, was WTTJ played. I can't remember.

Not that this has anything to do with football, but I've been watching a lot of NBA games lately and I hear Welcome to the Jungle played a lot.  Mostly before the tip off at the beginning of the games.  Its fuckin great to hear GNR on tv, no matter how or when it's played.

The short version, at least for here in the States, is:

The NFL (and MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, etc) and the inherent stadiums/arenas/raceways will have contractual licensing agreements set up with places like ASCAP, BMI, and the Musician's Performers rights organizations. Thus, the properties will get a package deal on certain songs to play during games. Since you'll hear the songs through the TV broadcasts as well, the leagues, and the networks will also be signatories of ASCAP, BMI, etc.

Ergo, vis a vis, you hear it, they get paid. It all adds up.

The same thing in principle applies to the movie clips that get show too during events-the studios and talent get paid too.

Wanna get paid? Start owning or investing in intellectual property. Money up and out the yingyang LIKETHAT.
