Title: Anyone in the Los Angeles area....
Post by: Kujo on November 09, 2005, 12:24:57 PM
I'm going to be in the area and going to the Kings-Panthers game on the night of December 10th. I'm looking for any recommendation on what to go do in the area that isn't the typical tourist traps. I'm going to have my 7 year old daughter with me so keep it clean ;). Thanks.

Random Orion could help you. He lives in LA (I think) might as well PM him...

Is Knotts Berry Farm too touristy for you?  It's a great theme park, better than Disney.

Griffith Park is wonderful this time of year.  Parents take their kids there for the pony rides.  You're from Florida right? (flatland  ;D).  I think your daughter would like seeing the views from Griffith Park.  And if she likes that, then rent a car, drive west on Mulholland and watch the sun set - I've never met anyone who hasnt been wowed by that.

Another family favorite is ice-skating at Pershing Square.  It starts in late November.

hmmm.  You might as well take in Venice Beach while you're here.

I don't suggest Venice Beach.  At least not with your little girl.  Mulholland is a good suggestion.  Personally, I prefer Disneyland to Knotts (nicer area as well), but if you are from Florida (assuming you have both been to Disney World) it might be better to go to Knotts.

You can also check out the Getty (although your daughter might be bored), they have a bunch of nice art that they might lose pretty soon.  It also gives you a nice view of LA from up on the hill.

Disneyland is likely to be packed in December.  But if you've never been, I say you should go, even if you've been to Disneyworld.  I've been to both and even though there is more to do at Disneyworld, I don't think anything compares to Disneyland.

The last time I was down there, I took my daughter to the La Brea tar pits.  (Not my idea!)  But it actually turned out to be kind of fun.  She's 5, and she really liked it and still talks about it.  I don't know how far you want to drive, but there is always the San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park.

But lets face it.  Given all those choices, any kid will pick Disneyland.  So would I.

Tarpits is a good suggestion.  I didn't think of that.

As for Disneyland, it was the park that was actually Walt's vision.  Thus, it has a special aura about it.

aura is a good word.  I was going to say "magic" but aura sounds less corny.   ;)  Whatever it is, its special.

I'm a disney nut though...I'll be there on Thanksgiving,  Hopefully 5 months pregnant too.

Thanks for the suggestions. My daughter is in San Diego now, so we hit all those spots (Sea World, San Diego Zoo) in August, and went to Universal for a day. California is so much better than Florida in my opinion, cant wait to settle my business here and get out.

I'm just trying to find stuff to do that day of the game, but checking my tickets I see its a 1:00 game so looks like it will be some late afternoon sight seeing and dinner. I always hear people mention Pinks to go get a hotdog. Is it worth the trip? I see that its not too far from the Staples Center.

I would go to Tommy's Burger by Staples.
