Title: Thinking of buying new guitar..advice needed
Post by: Irish rose on November 08, 2005, 10:32:09 AM
Hey all

Im thinking of buying a new guitar, the one I have at the moment isnt great and its sound is starting to get on my nerves.

My Current Guitar http://cgi.ebay.ie/Westfield-E4000-Electric-Guitar-Incl-Gibson-Plecs_W0QQitemZ7359024139QQcategoryZ106458QQcmdZViewItem

Im thinking of taking a giant leap and buying myself a Gibson Les Paul Standard!! Im doing this cos I've got some extra cash lying around and I want a guitar that i'll keep for many years (I dont wanna buy an epi les paul and then get rid of it 2 years later for a Gibson)

My amp is a Marshall MG30dfx.

My question is, how big of a difference in sound do you think there will be?? I mean obviously the Les Paul is a far superior guitar but would the difference be very noticable based on my current Amp??

Are you sure that you wanna spend all that money for a Gibson? If I were you, I would just put some new pickups in it and buy yourself a better amp. But thats just me.

you know what, im actually having a chang of heart! I think I will buy a new amp instead and replace the pick-ups!

What amp would you recommend considering im willing to spend 1500 euro which is approx 2000 dollars i think?

I was looking at a marshall dsl 401 but im not sure, I could probobly afford an amp at step up from that.

if you're spending over ?500 on a guitar, you need to know exactly what you're looking for, because people like Gibson know that a lot of people buy their products for the sole reason that Slash/Page etc played them, so a ?2k Gibson may play like a ?500 Epiphone.

Amps - depends where you play it.  Hardly worth getting a $2000 amp for your bedroom  ;)

Yeah I know what your saying. I was looking at the marshall DSL 401, can anyone recommend this amp or something similar.

I get pissed off playing with my current set up, the distortion isnt particularly good and it just feels like theres a lack of power especially when playing solos..... thats why im willing to spend so much money to get good equipment

i think you should get an ESP edwards les paul.  I work in a guitar store and own/get to play tons of great guitars. Right now I have a custom superstrat, some old kramers, a 79 gibson les paul custom and my gretsch white falcon will be here on tuesday.

The edwards can be found on ebay new and shipped to you for under $1000 and are on the same level as Gibson LP standards as a whole (gibsons have huge gaps of quality, some std's are great, some are terrible and most are mediocre and not worth $2k.)  I owned an Edwards LP and it was better then the gibson I have now. My biggest issue ist hat I am not a huge fan of the way LP's play. I will be selling the gibson custom I have when christmas drives up prices on ebay.

With the $1000+ extra money you have you can spend it on a good tube combo. I personally dislike many 1x12 combos (i have a jubilee 2554 1x12 combo which I run into a 4x12 cab) because they don't project well and sound stifled. I'd go with a 2x12 combo of some sort, but not a newer marshall. Depending on how much gain you need you could find a jcm 800 2x12 combo for under $1000.

Thanks for the advice, lots to think about there!

I wil look into this, seems like a lot of the edwards guitars come from Japan, are these generally good quality??

There r too many guitars out there to choose from. You got to narrow ur range down - whether u want fixed bridge, floyd rose, v shaped, x shaped, no of strings etc.  I would recommend spending more on a good amp though.
