LOS ANGELES - Sylvester Stallone is signing on to reprise his role as boxer Rocky Balboa in the sixth installment of the long-running film series, which he wrote and will direct.

The film, titled ?Rocky Balboa,? will be co-produced and co-financed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios and will be distributed by Columbia Pictures.

Stallone has been trying to make a sixth movie for years and has been reworking a script. The latest version, which sources said is similar to the tone and grit of the first two movies, persuaded the studios to negotiate a deal.

?In many ways, the screenplay really took me back to the original ?Rocky,?? Revolution Studios founder Joe Roth said in a statement. ?As a past champion, Rocky Balboa is once again a regular guy who has to find himself and deal with real life. This film brings Rocky?s story full circle.?

In the new installment, Rocky, lonely and retired in Philadelphia, comes out of retirement, intending to fight a few low-profile local fights. He?s approached to fight a match with reigning heavyweight champ Mason ?The Line? Dixon, and soon his comeback ignites a media firestorm.

??Rocky Balboa? is about everybody who feels they want to participate in the race of life, rather than be a bystander,? Stallone said in a statement. ?You?re never too old to climb a mountain, if that?s your desire.?

Shooting is scheduled to begin in December in Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Stallone received Academy Award nominations for starring in and writing ?Rocky,? and the 1976 MGM film won an Oscar for best picture, best director (John G. Avildsen) and best editing (Richard Halsey, Scott Conrad). The movie grossed $117.3 million at the domestic boxoffice, making Stallone a film star and creating one of cinema?s most famous characters.

It also launched one of the most successful film series of all time. 1979?s ?Rocky II? grossed $85 million, and 1982?s ?Rocky III,? which featured Mr. T, grossed $120.2 million. ?Rocky IV,? with Dolph Lundgren, made $125.4 million after its 1985 release. By the decade?s close, however, audiences seemed to have tired of the character. ?Rocky V,? released in 1990, made only $40 million.


Rocky 6 - lol, i'm all for this as its one of those absurd parts of life that remind u not to take it all too seriously.

Only the other week i was wondering when Rocky 6 would appear....and on cue...

Rocky is got to be like 70 in this movie . But still will be nice to see Stallone do something other then straight to dvd movies.

I heard about this on the radio a few weeks back, only exception is that supposedly Stallone wants to make Rock into a musical production following the 6th film's release..Talk about milking it for all its worth :peace:

Yes, Copland was a damn good movie.  He gained some serious weight for that role as well.

Nice pick, I completely forgot about Copland. It definately had a Reservoir Dogs vibe to me I thought..Tarantino sure could have done wonders with that movie.

Here's the script.

Rocky is really poor so he starts teaching climbing and all that shit. But the mayor won't let him do it cause he doesn't have the permission. So he takes a truck full of guns, wears his red bandana and his boots and shoots down the mayor's office.

That's where the good deaf cops come in and ask him to stop and they'll give him the permission. They'll even arrange a huge fight with another boxer.

He thanks them but they can't hear him cause they're deaf, so they shoot him.

Copland definately had a Reservoir Dogs vibe .Plus he gained like 40 or 60 pounds for the role .

I love the Rocky movies, but even I thought that the fifth one was kinda lame.  In my opinion, Sly is getting too old to do any more Rambo or Rocky flicks, just like Harrison Ford is too old to do another Indiana Jones flick.

From watching the Contender, Sly at 60 is in better shape than anyone on this board.

although i can understand people's "had enough" attitidue, i love rocky. the original is probably my favorite movie ever. and Rocky V was really lame so hopefully they can end the series on a high note (meaning a good movie at least on par with Rocky II).

also, i love philly and i'm glad to see it's gonna be set here.

i've alwasy had a soft spot for Sly Stallone, despite some pretty bad movies over the years. 

i actually live 2 houses away from where Sly Stallone grew up.

I've read various things on this for a while.  I've always liked the Rocky movies.  The first was awesome and the subsequent films were made up of entertaining music video style scenes, tragic deaths and good always conquers bullshit.....lots of fun....and some great bad guys to.

Speaking of great bad guys it's awesome Mr.T is returning, i've missed that guy.

The rumours of Rocky's wife played by Talia Shire being dead are true i'm pretty certain of that, Sly himself gave it away in his own magazine i think, the movie is meant to start with her funeral so no appearance by her either.

 :o A 6th movie? that's too much I don't think Rocky can handle another fight, I hope it's a good movie cause last one was a fiasco. I though last great stalone movie was Demolition man, was it before Cliffhanger?

He'll probably die at the end of the flick.  With him being depressed and lonely, I don't see him enjoying life after the fight at the end.  His brain supposedly looks like swiss cheese from all the hits he took after Rocky 4. 

Shit.  I figured that maybe if I went to a board of a 80's band I might be able to rally some support for another sequel.
