Title: Brain drum clinics in the UK
Post by: Jaxl Stanley on September 29, 2005, 01:34:53 PM
Did anyone go to Brains drumming clinic in John Sheerers & Sons music in Leeds this week?

Wondered what it was like and what was said?

I remember someone said he / she would try to go to the one in Colchester. I hope he / she made it.

Brain was apparently backed by a guy called DJ Disk.

You can read a few reviews of the show here :

Though i didn't go to the clinic at Leeds, I did catch Brain's showcase at the 'Drummer Live 2005' exhibition last Saturday in London.

Brain and DJ Diskgave a half hour performance on the main stage. after the performance, Brain explined that it was the first time that he and DJ Disk had ever performed together, and hence a lot of it was improvisational. All very well, but I didn't make for good watching or listening. Much of the performance was taken up by DJ Disk playing around with his crossfader, while Brain waited (interminably) for the right moment and the right beat at which to join in. He did manage an extensive, latin styled solo (which included much use of an electronic drum pad), but I seem to remember him being a little out of time at certain points. (Other than that, I can't really comment any technical points, as I am not a drummer myself*). Unlike a lot of the other performers, he didn't do a Q&A at the end, so there was no opportunity to ask him what the hell is going on with Chinese Democracy (not that he'd have known, given the ultra-ultra secretiveness of things).

Please don't interpret any of the above as Brain-bashing. I think he is a great rock drummer and also capable of giving a more experimental edge to GnR's future, and I was very impressed with him at Docklands (and on the bootlegs of the 2002 US tour).

* i went along to the exhibition solely to see the Drum showcase performers (which also included John Blackwell (Prince) and Jimmy Chamberlain, in case you are wondering.

Nicko McBrain? I don't think he was there. Some guy on that board originally thought they were talking about him, but he was confused.

There was no big name drummer except for Brain.

He was hosting one of these clinics, I think it was the one in London...
