Title: Locomotive/92' Tokyo Drum Solo
Post by: ClintroN on October 06, 2005, 06:18:05 AM
I've been listenin' to Locomotive over n' over all week, THE best lyrics EVER!!!!!

Anyway, i was listenin' to the piano outro with the drum rolls n' shit n' forgot  that Matt n' Duff r' credited for percusion...n' its obviously Duff smashin' that crash symbol ......do you think this is where the idea came from for Duff to run out on stage durin' Matt's solo n' jam with him for the Illusion shows?????

it just fuckin' hit me

I agree, Matt Sorum's drum solo's were fuckin shite. Just an excuse for the band to have a drink.

mmm honestly I love locomotion Locomotive, as you can't imagine, but specially the last part the slowly part, its so great, it leads you to states of unconscience, without drinking or smoking anything, that is for me... That is the only remarkable song of the Illusion II, in my opinion, that is not considered a HIT, its SOOO different from the rest of the album, that when you really like it, You only want more of that KIND of music, instead the BIG hits, like KOHD, or Civil War, that compared with Locomotive, are nothing,in my not so humble opinion,? and it turns out to be, an Axl and Slash composition, with demonstrates us, that they "together" were certainly a Strong force, of writing, penning composing, and playing...

anyway, Relationships as Love, is So strange...

I agree with the last part of the song being the best. The whole song is awesome though, and only guns listeners generally hear it. They've put good endings on a few of their songs eg NR, Patience, Locamotive, DTJ etc...

I rememeber the first time I heard locomotive, I always liked the part of "gotta find a way to cure this loneliness...", but the most excelent part is the outro of loooooove is so stranged, I mean what the fuck did Axl was thinking when he came up with that. I think that song just as breakdown is my fave of GNR.  :peace:

They were going to play it at that PPV in 92 also with Jeff Beck but Jeffs tenisis (sp?) acted up and he couldnt play.
That would have been so killer with slash and jeff on lead and axl sounded great that show.

As for the Japan DVDs, i have the cd import and it was not on that either. Are you sure they played it on that nite.

Axl did say Locomotive was Slash's baby. Check out the L.A Forum 91 shows. I could post the bit where he says that but I don't really have time right now lol.

Concerning Paris, yeah they even rehearsed Locomotive with Jeff Beck (no vocals by Axl though) the day before the show. I posted the rehearsals DVD video on DIME for those interested, actually (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=62995&hit=1 - hurry before there is no seed anymore, they rehearsed Train Kept A Rollin with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry as well and it's on the video).

And for the Japan DVDs, they did play Locomotive on the 20th. The even played Coma as an opener (!!!) on the 19th. What did Geffen (and/ or the band) choose to release?? The 22nd of course! With no freakin rare song played that night.

I could post all those live versions of Locomotive if people are interested. I could probably do one right now. Let me know.

There you go, Locomotive live in Tokyo, 02.20.1992. Kickin ass and takin names.

http://rapidshare.de/files/6220980/GNR-1992.02.20-d1t04.flac.html (you have to choose Free and on the next page, then scroll down and wait 30 seconds - it's a pain but it's free! :))

It's in FLAC (lossless) format. Download and install this plugin in Winamp if you don't already have it: click here (http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=131643&download=yes&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.nullsoft.com%2Fcustomize%2Fcomponent%2F2003%2F3%2F31%2FP%2FFlac_Plugin_for_WA2.exe). Why FLAC? Because it was how it was shared and I usually don't alter shared stuff, plus it's a lossless format which means you'll have great quality.

It's an audience recording, but it's still pretty good. Enjoy!

And you're welcome for the rehearsals DVD, Genesis.

I am not sure,  but my guess is it may not have been Geffen's choice but Axl's/bands.
They PRO taped every show since after the Appettite.
Actually,  primary choice for the LIVE release was St.  Louis,  but Axl tried hard not to finish the show and we all know what happend there, since they wanted a complete version of the concert,   the release obviously,  had to be fom another place.
Also,   as far as Locomotive is considered...
Locomotive (if I am not wrong),  is originally played on 3 guitars.
It could be played with 2 (like they did play the 5 times they did it),   but it could not be 'portrayed'  the right way.
Since they tried their best in Paris PPV show,   they probably decided to play it there with the 3 guitars otherwise,  I see no reason why Slash and Gilby wouldn't had done it if they really wanted to in Paris.

I don't think it meant they were gonna play it.

Bands play all kinds of songs during soundcheck for fun. Sometimes because they're gonna play the song during the show, but it's not a guarantee.

And save your Venezuela Tourist Office posts for some other section. This is the GN'R section where we talk about GN'R.

Paris rehearsals is indeed the only SBD version, and it does not have vocals. Sorry. :(

Let me upload two more:

- Live at the L.A Forum, 08.03.1991: http://rapidshare.de/files/6303048/gnr.locomotive.live.la.forum.19910803.mp3.html

- Live at the Madison Square Garden, N.Y., 12.13.1991: http://rapidshare.de/files/6303243/gnr.locomotive.live.ny.msg.19911213.mp3.html (I think this one is the better sounding one, very clear sound)

So now you have all the known and recorded live versions of the song.

The exact dates are the following:

07.19.91 - Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA
07.30.91 - Great Western Forum, Inglewood, CA
08.03.91 - Great Western Forum, Inglewood, CA
12.13.91 - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
02.20.92 - Toyko Dome, Tokyo, Japan

Mountain View is not in MA., it's in CA. (California), and yes it's in the States.

Thanks Mysteron, haven't seen you in ages here. :)

Thanks a lot Will for sharing those. The Tokyo version is flac is very cool? : ok:

I don't really care for the backing vocals they had during the 92 shows, but I thought they sounded really cool on this song, especially towards the end.

AxlRoseVen, very sorry but there's no known live video of this song. :( This is a bummer because it's one my fav. tracks as well. Yes, I am a mod on CD.com as well.

Sadly GNR n' The Geffen company do a BIG mistake cuz they didn't make the locomotive video , that way it'd be a' eternal hit like SCO, Don't cry, SIDHY, etc, to remember forever!  :-\

Thanks for all 5 versions Will, they kick serious ass : ok: MSG is definately my favorite version so far, the band just totally dominates this song, and Axl's voice is flawlessly full of venom.

mmm honestly I love locomotion Locomotive, as you can't imagine, but specially the last part the slowly part, its so great, it leads you to states of unconscience, without drinking or smoking anything, that is for me... That is the only remarkable song of the Illusion II, in my opinion, that is not considered a HIT, its SOOO different from the rest of the album, that when you really like it, You only want more of that KIND of music, instead the BIG hits, like KOHD, or Civil War, that compared with Locomotive, are nothing,in my not so humble opinion,  and it turns out to be, an Axl and Slash composition, with demonstrates us, that they "together" were certainly a Strong force, of writing, penning composing, and playing...

anyway, Relationships as Love, is So strange...

Wow, Estranged... Estranged is the best thing Axl and Slash will ever work on.. Amazing lyrics, beautiful piano, genius riff.. They'll never beat that song, altho Axl could on Chinese Democracy with the right musicians.. Buckethead, anyone?

The outro is definately one of the best Gn'R ever composed.

Second to Coma for me :)

locomotion is good, but breakdown is the best song on that album by far!!!
