Title: Depeche Mode

The Ultimate Remix Album

Depeche Mode Remixes 81-04
Released October 25th on Mute Records
Released October 26th on Reprise Records

Depeche Mode - Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher - are unique. For nearly 25 years they have been making groundbreaking music, which has influenced generations of artists.

Depeche Mode have always been at the vanguard of remix culture since its inception, and the history of Depeche Mode is inextricably linked with the history of the remix. Very early on in their career the band worked closely and extensively with up and coming remixers who would go on to become pivotal figures in the field including Francois Kevorkian, Adrian Sherwood, William Orbit, Portishead and Air.

"Remixes 81-04" is a 2-disc set spanning over 20 years of Depeche Mode's pioneering remixes. Almost a greatest hits collection, the album is a compendium of Depeche Mode classics remixed by some of the best remixers in the world, including Underworld, Goldfrapp, Air, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Timo Maas, Flood and of course Depeche Mode themselves. It is also released as a limited edition triple disc set, featuring a bonus disc of highly collectable and rare remixes. At once a celebration but also an historical record of the evolution of the remix, the album is a fascinating and deeply rewarding document of an emerging art form.

Highlights include a brand new remix of "Halo" by Goldfrapp, "Barrel Of A Gun" by Underworld, "Home" remixed by Air as well as a new mix of "Enjoy The Silence" by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda.

The limited edition bonus CD features remixes of "A Question of Lust" by Flood and "World In My Eyes" by Daniel Miller plus a William Orbit mix of "Walking In My Shoes" and a Danny Tenaglia mix of the hypnotic and seductive "I Feel Loved". Also included are brand new mixes by Goldfrapp, Ulrich Schnauss, Colder and Rex the Dog.

The release of this album will be preceded by the single, "Enjoy The Silence", featuring mixes by Mike Shinoda, Timo Maas and Ewan Pearson, plus additional tracks mixed by LFO, Blackstrobe, Goldfrapp and Headcleaner. The single is released October 18th on Mute Records (October 19th on Reprise Records).

"Depeche Mode is one of the most influential groups of our time", says Mike Shinoda on one of his favourite bands, "Their music is an inspiration to me, and I am excited for our fans to hear my take on one of my favourite Depeche Mode songs."

Alison Goldfrapp adds: "Depeche Mode are the only electronic band to have risen above their own genre and it was a privilege to have worked on such a great track".

A sentiment echoed by Timo Maas; "We were proud to be asked to remix, "Enjoy The Silence".... but Depeche Mode are a seminal band and the track is one of the top 10 all time classics... it wasn't easy when the melodies are burned in your brain. I think it worked out pretty well though".

"It's a dangerous business messing with the classics", confides Ewan Pearson, "I always swore blind I'd never do a remix of something I loved so much, but of course, when you're asked it's impossible to say no. "Enjoy the Silence" is one of my favourite singles of all time - I still have my battered 7 inch copy and I guess its one of the reasons why I decided to make music myself in the first place."

Martin Gore reflecting on the Depeche Mode remix era said, "It's an amazing feeling to sit back and listen to such an interesting mix of artists take the spirit of Depeche Mode and add another dimension".

That's cool news. I love Depeche Mode. I like to listen to "Shout" when I'm driving home from work. It's a great song to release all your pent up anger to.? I didn't realize they had been around for so long. Twenty-five years is quite impressive.? Maybe someone will buy me The Ultimate Remix Album for my birthday.? :)

One question - how many remixes have been done with DM tunes over the years? It seems there are quite a LOT.

Yeah, it is awesome.

My only "problem" is the tracks with Martin Gore on lead vocals.....  :nervous:

People who expect a pop oriented album because they've heard "Precious" will be surprised.

"Playing The Angel" is dark and heavy.

I think "damaged people" is the 2nd best track! It's really great.  :)

Depeche Mode Re-Ups With Mute, Unveils Tour

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Depeche Mode has renewed its long-term deal with Mute/EMI and is planning to release its 12th studio album in early spring 2009. It's unclear who will handle the project in the United States; past Depeche Mode albums were licensed by Mute to Warner Bros. here.

At a press event today (Oct. 6) in Berlin, the band also unveiled its 2009 Tour of the Universe, which will play 28 stadium dates worldwide beginning May 10 in Tel Aviv, Israel. As-yet-unannounced dates in North and South America will follow; Live Nation is promoting.

The last Depeche Mode tour, in support of 2006's "Playing the Angel," was supposed to conclude in Tel Aviv but the show was canceled due to concerns over safety.

"Playing the Angel" has sold 423,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set was produced by Ben Hillier, who is also producing the as-yet-untitled new album. Frontman David Gahan said during the press conference that at least two songs he'd penned would appear on the set.

Here are Depeche Mode's tour dates:

violator & black celebration are probably my faves.

Depeche Mode have announced the European leg of their "Tour of the Universe 2009". The band are currently in New York working on a new album, due April next year. Depeche Mode's follow up to "Playing The Angel" will be the 12th album for the UK outfit. The tour will kick off in Israel on May 10th, 2009. Note that the last date of the "Playing The Angel" tour (August 3rd 2006) was to take place at Tel Aviv's Hayarkon Park, but the band were forced to cancel due to the impending war.

This will be Depeche Mode's first ever stadium tour, taking place in 28 cities across 22 countries before finishing at Porto's Superbock Super Rock Festival on July 11th. Depeche Mode are expected to play to over 1.3 million fans on this European leg of the "Tour of the Universe 2009".

I also have Playing the Angel and a few greatest hits CDs.  It's funny because i'm actually stealing all of these CDs from my mom who was a big fan in the 80s.  :P

Too bad But Not Tonight (originally a UK b-side and a bonus track on the cd release of Black Celebration) isn't included on the single-disc version of the remastered album. Until Depeche Mode release a career-spanning collection of non-album tracks, I'm stuck with the original cd from 1987.

As for Playing The Angel, I'd go as far as to say it's their best since Violator.

They will visit sweden this summer..But they choose a shitty festival instead of the usual stadium. So i won't go ..Maybe they will come back next winter.  Depeche is one of my favourite bands and i just gotta see them before it's too late. They are the only band on my list that i have not seen  yet

Didn't really like PTA as much as Exciter, haven't heard the new album yet, maybe it's about time  :P. Heard Dave got sick, hope he will recover : ok:

My favourite song is World in my eyes and favourite album have to be Music for the masses. Everything counts from pasadena 88 always gets me going.

Probably because the stadium gig in Stockholm in July 2006 wasn't sold out.

They seem to be in between selling out arenas and playing to half full stadiums up here. So a festival makes sense....

They played here in Sweden last night at the Arvikafestivalen. Which is a festival with a focus on synthpop/electronic music.

So to get the biggest band in that genre was a major achievement for the organizers.

Unfortunately (?) it also meant that we got to see a shorter festival set and missed out on about five songs.

That and the fact that a big part of the crowd were there for the festival itself (and the partying involved) instead of Depeche Mode, made the show just good and not exceptional....
