Title: Poker
Post by: Evolution on September 17, 2005, 02:02:48 PM
Any board members play poker at all?

Im having my 2nd ever serious game tonight, last time it was a ?10 buy in between 8 making for a ?80 pot and i came 5th  :-\

Tonight however it is a ?2.50 buy in making for a ?20 pot, but the best part is most of the better players from last time can't make it so i have a good chance of taking home the twenty  ;D

Ill post how i do later on but for now post poker stories, or just yes/no on whether you play it  : ok:

I play Texas Hold Em with mates. Love it. ?20 a head.

Would love to have the financial security to play in real tournaments.

I played all of the time in college. ?It was one of the ways I got my spending money. ?I also played a lot in vegas. ?I haven't, however, played as much since the Poker craze has started. ?If you know how to play though, there is a lot of money to be made because there are more people than ever that try to play that don't know how to.

Here's my worst story:

I was playing 20/40 at the Mandalay Bay in vegas. ?I got A J suited. ?I was in like third position, and I raised before the flop and get called by a few players. ?Flop comes A J 10. ?So I check, then the guy next to me bets, three more call, and then I check raised. ?Everyone called my raise but one. ?The next card comes: another J. ?So I have Js over As, and there is only one hand that can beat me in the game, pocket As. ?I raise, the guy next to me folds, the next guy calls, the next guy folds, and the next guy reraises. ?We both call. ?Final card comes Q. ?There is no possibility of a straight flush on the board. ?I assumed that the other players were on a straight draw, and maybe one had two pair, or the other J. ?I checked because there were two other players in the game. ?If they had anything they would bet, and if they didn't they wouldn't call my bet anyway. ?The guy next to me bets, then the guy next to him raises. ?I am thinking that I am golden and that this guy has a straight, so I reraise. ?The initial better folds. ?The initial raiser finally reraises me, and I call. ?Of course, he had pocket As. ?He just had the perfect hand, and he had the perfect victim in me with a great second hand, and of course a bunch of other stupid players. ?I thought he would have played it more strongly if he had the As, but I was wrong. ?That pot was huge. ?

I think it is in Rounders where they talk about not remembering your biggest wins, but vividly remembering your bad beats. ?That certainly was the case for me.

Good luck in your game. :peace: ?

Play texas hold-em all the time. It truly is the cadillac of poker, love it. It's one of the few games where it doesn't matter what you have, but how you bet. Not always, of course, but if you can bluff really well, you can win alot. No better card game out there.

I play a lot with friends and online.  I only play the free games online now, as the bastards at the credit card company won't let it be used for online gambling.

With friends, we just play $5 buy in tournament style games.  My best finish there is 3rd (walked home with $17).  As for online, I play at Pokerstars and UltimateBet.  I'll play anything, but my favorites are limit hold 'em (placed 30th in a 3500 player tournament in LH on Pokerstars) and triple draw.  Triple Draw is 5 card draw lowball, and with 3 draws instead of one.  Interesting game.  It's available in both A-5 (where the best hand is A-2-3-4-5, flushes do not count against you, nor do straights), and 2-7 (best hand is 2-3-4-5-7, straights and flushes DO count against you).  I greatly prefer A-5.

All you have to do is open a Netteller account, send the money to them, and then send it from Netteller to website.

I like playing Texas Holdem. Sometimes I even play for real money online. I don't win much, I don't lose much. The thing though, I like to play with real people instead. Online is fun, but poker is a game in which every little detail counts and applying psychology and looking at the other players, it's something that can't be done online.

I do play for fun with my friends though. We do sometimes bet a few things, drinks, dinners whatever.

I'm up with Oddy, if you guys want to set up some kinda HTGTH poker contest (with play money of course) I'm up for it.

and Kiss my Axl we'd have to do it so everyone starts off with equal play money, and then just play elimination til there's only one left.

I play Texas Holdem'

During the weekends, I play in either a single or dual table sit-n-go tournament with sme friends.  We usually do 2-3 tourneys a night with the buyin ranging from $30 US - $100 US depending on how gutsy everyone's feeling.

I'm a very aggressive player - I prefer to get muscle early and use it.  I've also been taken out rather early many times by playing that way.  However, I'd say I place 'in the money' 75% of the time or so.  I'm not an easy person to play against, as I tend to be erratic (or at least make them think that I am) - and I tend to get real psychological, real quick.  Oh, and I wear my goofy poker hat and my sunglasses - because, well, why not.

Also - never drink while playing poker.. sure, encourage them to drink all they want.  In fact, even buy a round for em.. but seriously, keep your wits about you.  Oh, and chew gum / blow bubbles.. it really distracts your opponents :-D

dealers choice is the way we play. makes it more interesting than playing hold 'em every hand. we throw that in here & there though. A HTGTH poker tourney sounds great, Ill play as well if someone smart can figure out how to do it.

10 of us could syncronise logging into holdempoker.com and quickly sign up for a free tournament? But thats never gonna happen

playing conservative you never win, you only stay in for long.

i use the old "i'm either gonna be knocked out first or win the damn thing" approach. go all out big risks etc.

alright i'll download holdem poker. then we'll somehow organise this. first we gotta figure out what time is suitable for everyone since we all live in different places.

so holdempoker.com is the definite choice? can someone just make a room and we all join it? if so everyone download holdem poker. although the chances of us getting this underway is equal to the chance that chinese democracy will ever be released. :(

You can just register for that site. Thing is the free rooms that we could use are shared between thousands of online player at the same time. So the chances of us all getting in at the same time are slim to none  :-\

Title: Re: Poker
Post by: Oddy on October 31, 2005, 03:11:48 AM
hmmmmm thats the same deal for partypoker too. theres thousands of players on there so it'd be hard to get us all on a table.

im thinking maybe yahoo...........im gonna do some research to find a good poker place so we can really do this.

edit: why does it say drama qween under my name? did i do that while wasted or something? ???

Title: Re: Poker
Post by: Mal Brossard on October 31, 2005, 01:17:43 PM
Yahoo is the easiest to get a private table, but it's only limit hold 'em.  While limit is my best "mainstream" game (I can't call A-5 Triple Draw a mainstream game just yet), I'd rather play some NLH with all the people here.

I just had to post this hand. I got fucked over badly last night.

On the board is A, 5, 10, Q. I have around 35% of the chips and it's just me and someone with around 60% of the chips.

I picked up A,10 so i moved all-in. The guy thought about it for a while(decent pot on the go already) and after much doddling he called me. He would have around 40 chips left if he lost. I had put 154 in as all in.

He turned over Q,5. My 2 pair beating his. All i needed to avoid was a Queen or a five....

The five came... :'(

I know this is off topic but I have to say soemthing.. I think it sucks how huge and mainstream poker is becoming.. Everyone and their mother thinks it's cool to gamble especially kids. I kind of liked it when espn wasn't broadcasting the damn thing every secodn and when every show wasn't posting websites to gamble.. Call me old fashion but to me it was better when you just learned from your dad or friends when you got older.. it's definetly a recipe for trouble with how accessable it is and talked about constantly.. Also how athletes and celebrities make it seem really cool.

I totally hear ya.  I liked it a lot better when it was more of a cult thing.  I have been playing since I was 18 at Indian Casinos.  You would think that players like myself would love the fact that everyone thinks they know how to play poker well and basically throw away their money.  I actually find it quite annoying.  If you talk to anyone they will basically say they play poker.  I hate half of the kids that go into the poker room in vegas etc.  Many of them don't have the etiquette.

Guys, fucking listen to this. Ever played someone who doesn't know the hands? But somehow gets so fucking lucky?

Well a friend of called an all-in bet with 4 5 offsuit. The guy who went all in had pocket 9's

The lucky bastard caught a fucking flush.

Then this week he put out 6 players out of 7. I had a flush after the turn and he had 3 10's. The board paired on the river  :-[

Amen? :'(

Yup.

I've played at a table where there's been hot players who just could not lose.  The cards just fell their way all night, and no matter how skillfully the opposition played a hand, the hot hand always manages to trump a win.  It feels great when you're the hot hand...not so great when you're on the other side.

That's the one thing about cards: Over the LONG haul, skill beats luck, because eventually the luck peters out.  But man....some days it just pays to be sitting in the right chair. :)

I can't wait for the 27th December. Here is what we have planned.

2 Tables of 8. ?10 buy in. 4 left from each table take their chip count at the time of the 5th placed player getting knocked out to a new table of 8.

1st - ?100
2nd - ?40
3rd - ?20

Wish me luck!

My play in the league i play in is so bad. It's because i play conservatively too much. Next game i'm in i feel like playing Phil Ivey style.
