Title: Favorite Televised GNR Performance?
Post by: Booker Floyd on August 19, 2005, 12:55:13 AM
There havent been many, but for me its "Welcome To The Jungle" from the '88 VMAs.? Its the probably the quintessential GNR performance.? "Patience" from the '89 Grammys about as good, and one of the coolest Slash moments I can recall.? That solo is mesmerizing.

So whats your favorite?? Feel free to include the 1990, 1991 and 2002 VMAs.

"November Rain" with Elton John at the 1992 VMAs isn't allowed to be listed? ;)

I guess the 1992 Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert is one of my favorites. I remember watching it live on tv back in April 1992.

The 1988 VMA was bad ass.........BAS ASS!!!!! Patience in 89 was pretty cool too with the replacement drummer.
But Axl looked possessed in 88 and Slash was like something very new n cool to people my age. i was born in 1976. they were like this perfect 1-2 combo, better then joe perry and tyler, and dare to say even better then page n plant.

a few days after i saw GN'R at milton keynes in 93, mtv showed a bit from that concert when ronnie wood joined them for honkey tonk women. Brought it all flooding back. There was also a show that was shown a few years later on bbc when the book with robert johns photos came out. Had fotage from the european tour, and again featured some milton keynes stuff. Possibly one of the best trips i ever went on. Blind Melon, Soul asylum and the cult opened. Mike monroe(hanoi), Ron wood(stones), gilby(broken arm at time) singing dead flower and izzy back on guitarWhat a fukin show

Shit good thread! Wow they were all pretty amazing! But I loved the 92 performance of Nov Rain with Sir Elton and again the performance of Bohemium Rhapsody with Elton and We Will Rock You as well at the Freddie Tribute Concert. I have to say the 2002 performance was pretty fucking cool because it had been so long without seeing the main man on the tv!!

I've neven seen that one...is there any footage avialable? anyone?

I guess my favorite is Axl and Izzy with Tom Petty at the vma's in 89. I think I must've seen that performance 100 times.

And GNR as a whole, the Paris show in 92 was pretty good.

Of course, I only made note of those shows because 1990 was only a few members, 1991 was technically just a GNR concert, and 2002 is the new band.  '88 and '92 seem to be the only "true" GNR VMA performances.

But  incidentally, Im not a big fan of the '92 VMA performance.  It contains my least favorite elements of UYI-era GNR: backup singers, piano playing atop a motorcycle, synths, an orchestra, etc...not to mention that it simply wasnt the bands best performance.  It was good, but it certainly doesnt hit me like '88s "WTTJ" or '89s "Patience."

I do...albeit in average quality.  Which reminds me...Whats your policy on YouSendIt, Jarmo?  Because Id be glad to share some of these performances, and others could do the same.

1. Farm Aid-Civil War and the best, most snarling version of Down on the Farm ever. Civil War was also a brand new song so I almost passed out from excitement-then it kicked ass on top of that. Down on the Farm was easily GNR's most punk moment ever. The entire band looked bad ass as well. Other favs, hard to rank because they are all so good-Axl/Izzy with the Stones and with Tom Petty, Patience at the Grammy's-Don Henley on drums by the way. Everything about the Freddie Tribute but most importantly Axl flying out during the middle of Bohemian Rhap. 1988 Jungle performance at vma's-straight up rock and Axl's vocals were demonic. Ahhh, those were the days.

My other favorite is 88 VMA's; my favorite live version of WTTJ ever

3 come to mind in no particular order..

88 VMA's, just electrifying...

88 Ritz, a great snapshot of the band in it's truest form..

02 VMA's, very exciting, the mystery/intrigue/anticipation won't be matched anytime soon by anyone..

Interesting thread  : ok:

Nothing will ever top seeing the new band the night of the 2002 mtv awards-goosebumps-I know for a lot of people the will never be the original band, but I was so pumped up after that.

So many to choose from but Id have to say Patience, Axl and Tom Petty doing 'Free Falling", followed closely behind by the 2002 VMA's. Even though Axl wasnt at his best, that performance was pure adrenaline.

88' VMA's and the Paris PPV concert were my favorite TV Moments.

2002 VMA's were different. We had the info that they would be there.... then with Pink's slip and Jimmy Fallon's hints's I got so fired up that I didn't notice durring my first viewing that it was terrible. If that preformance went off without a hitch it would be number one (even though I favor the old lineup). It just had so much potential

I'll always remember when Axl danced out to join Tom Petty for Free Falin' at the 6th annual MTV Awards. It just didn't seem real at the time. Wasn't the all time best performance compared to some of these others listed, but it did seem to really feel like Axl was (and is) the most amazing musician of all time.

I just re-watched "Paradise City" from Paris 1992 hyppodr?me de Vincennes show...this is phenomenal. The old band was phenomenal. The size of the? stage was phenomenal. The crowd was phenomenal. Everything was phenomenal. What a great band it was!
I have faith in Chinese Democracy but concerning the Live shows, nah, the new band will NEVER top the Paris'92 show. The chemistry that night between all of them was sensational. What a great show...what a great band...

This is a great post. I have one I have been planning for a while, but this is one is sorta related, so I'll "dive" into it anyways.

The best GNR performance ever on TV was the MTV VMA's 1988 performance of WTTJ. It signified the climax of GNR as a great live act. They had other shows afterwards, but none would ever top this one. Slash, Axl, even Izzy, "Mr. Invisible" are getting into this song and sounding better together than ever. Axl of course stole the show with a peformance that was truly ROCK N' ROLL, when he's rockin and rollin around the stage. I would even say that that performance of his was the greatest by far of any rock n' roll frontman in history.

The other notable performance was Civil War/Down On The Farm @ Farm Aid 1990.

Finally, what strikes me about the MTV VMA 1992 peformance of Axl with Elton John on November Rain was the look that Axl gives to the camera at the beginning of the song when his and Elton's pianos go up to the stage. He almost gives this look of a mechanized doll. You have to watch it to understand what I am saying, but it is the only time I have ever seen Axl make that look on TV/Film. You could tell that he knew is his heart that that nite would never be topped by GNR again, because being given an award by Queen for the MTV Vanguard Award & performing his hardest song with Elton John on the same nite, his two favorite idols growing up in Music, was a dream come true, especially for a man who only 10 years earlier was a struglgling rock n roll vocalist caught up for the first time in LA with only 1-2 songs written, but a great vision of conquest ahead of him.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

i don't want to be a follower here but the '88 VMA's Jungle performance is simple the greatest, rawest performance, and is also by the orginal lineup. That level of instensity is just off the charts, every player was firing on all cylinders and axl was just possessed....

an honorable mention and close second is the tonight show/Fox performance of "used to love her" Axl did a great vocal performance and hearing the electric version was so cool, Slash's solos were awesome i really can't get enough of that performance its alot of fun.

as far as the new lineup....

u can't match the level of excitement/anticapation the '02 VMA performance brings, although sound problems and a winded axl made it a bit rusty. that intro scream is killer tho..... too bad that combined with the being out of breath from running around so much combined with sound problems combined with him being a bit nervous presenting the new band to the mainstream audience for the first time in a while caused his vocals to suffer a great deal.

The '01 Rio version of Jungle is just amazing, this is when axl hits it, and hits it big, too bad he wasn't like that during the VMA's, he was a little out of breath in the beginning but he regained himself by the middle and when he says "do u know where u are rio...etc..."? he sounds almost exactly like the Axl of old and i get goosebumps during the scream he does right after it.

One of my favourites also wasnt a music performance, it was a documentary shown in the UK in about 93 which was focused on Robert John following the band during the UYI tour. It was an amazing programme and I have been trying so hard with no luck for years to get a copy of this because I lost the tape when I moved house a few years ago.  I am not going off the thread completley cos this was one of my favourite GnR programmes but can anyone help me on finding this? I have been trying for so long!! Cheers Mike

I mean, if you bought the DVD you'd get the same thing.

No, the TV version would probably have a little logo somewhere in a corner. That's a huge difference  ;D

Civil War performed at the 1990 Farm Aid? : ok:

"Thank you!  Have a good FUCKIN' night!!"

Regarding the Freddie Tribure.  Actually the TV version  did have different angles.

I have the First shown TV version, a later edited version shown that Xmas which has different angles and camera shots  and then the DVD one is slightly different too.  But essentially they are the same, no big differences.

This is the best thread ever!

Thanx Kev for posting that. The whole band rocks on that performance...

Now what does Axl say at the beginning after..."since we don't mind" and before "this is the only farm song.."

As long as we are talking about posting released material.... Mtv released a "Best VMA Performances" VHS several years ago that has the 1988 Jungle performance. That probably shouldn't be posted either.

Is it just me, or does Matt's snare and overall drumming on both songs seem kinda luckluster and boring? Other than that the rest of the band and especially the redhead are in tiptop shape.

AHH, It's So Easy and Welcome to the Jungle live at the Ritz 88 when MTV aired a majority of the show. That is my favorite version of Jungle ever. :hihi:

Its my favorite version of WTTJ  too man,  its excellent, I think its the first video i saw from them... and since then I ve been charmed...

The Ritz show. Not the PAris show though. How many TV GN'R shows have there been?

My favorite was NR with elton John I think. Not because its the best of GNR I've ever seen, but because it was the first time I saw them on tv (except for videos).

By the way, thanks to all who uploaded files, Down on the farm was new to me. Real cool performance. Thanks a lot! : ok:

The 1988 VMA was bad ass.........BAS ASS!!!!! Patience in 89 was pretty cool too with the replacement drummer.
But Axl looked possessed in 88 and Slash was like something very new n cool to people my age. i was born in 1976. they were like this perfect 1-2 combo, better then joe perry and tyler, and dare to say even better then page n plant.

I totally agree with u ...
Axl was incredible ..... his hipnotyc dance .... his voice ......
The best rock'n'roll performance ever ......
oh.......those were the days....

my favorite tv performance has got to be vma 02. I hadn't heard much gn'r for quite some time and it really got me curious about gn'r again, just like i was when i first got into them back in 91. it also led me to the internet and of course this site!

i didn't think much of the performance then and i thought it was really sad that the old guys were gone, but after reading up on gn'r and axl i'm back, full time motherfuckers! :hihi:

Seeing as i have only been listening to GNR for a year and a half. And havent seen a lot of their performances, it would probably would be the VMA of 88,its unreal what 14 years will do to someone.

Well its got to be 'Jungle' from 88 VMAs. just smoking, the band were firing on all cylinders there.

Ive seen Down on the Farm from the Fram Aid gig, but never Civil War. Id love to get hold of a copy if anyone has it? Down on the farm is electrifying live.

Id say the worst one was November Rain from 1992 VMAs (or was it 1993?) - the one with Elton John. (2002 VMAs as well of course, but that goes wityhout saying.) It just sounds laboured and Slashs guitar is out of tune. Speaking of out of tune, Patience at the Grammys had it's moments, but Izzys guitar sounds out of tune and Axls whistled part is awful. Coupled with that Slashs solo has some inspired moments, but by and large it's fairly sloppy sounding.

Paradise City at the Freddie Mercury benefit sounded nice and raw as well.

ya i actually said that to myself about the 92 VMA performance, i assumed it was the footage itself but now that someone else has said it, maybe it was.
