Title: Axls taste in music:
Post by: jimmythegent on August 15, 2005, 09:15:45 PM
If theres one thing you can say about uncle Axl is that the man has some pretty decent taste in music.
I refer specifically to his love of Janes Addiction, Faith No More, Soundgarden and NIN - edgy, cutting edge for it's time and IMO timeless in many instances

He also said he thinks 'Limp Bizkit is fun'. Those bands are mainstream bands that everyone says they like.

Seriously. You listen to Soundgarden? Join the club.

I love the fact that at one point The Four Horsemen were his favorite band.

well, I wasnt refering to Limp Bizket - I was refering mainly to Janes actually.
Bizkit is perhaps an ?isolated indiscretion

And as far as alot of people liking Soundgarden is concerned, that doesnt minimise the fact that those who do have great taste imo

Jimmy, I agree. I think Soundgarden is one of the best bands ever. I think being labeled as grunge hurt, instead of helped their career. They were clearly not grunge.

Love em as well - their first few albums (Louder than Love, Ultramega OK) defined grunge imo- the sludgy, detuned, drony guitars, anguished vocals etc..
but they certainly broke out of that mould with their last 3 albums, moving into more psychedalic, late- Beatles era territory.
But I would say that their association to grunge enabled them to find a wider audience if nothing else - it's a blessing and a curse that they broke up, a bummer that we have no new Soundgarden albums, but also cool that they bowed out on top - every album they released was a gem, they never released a bad album IMO

I don't know about Limp but Axl probably hears stuff months before we do.

Jimmy, you think Louder than Love sounds like grunge? I disagree. Listen to Hands All Over. That is balls to the wall metal. They really went metal with Badmotorfinger, and thats the album that really got them labeled as grunge. God, I love that fucking album. Badmotorfinger is one of the best albums of all time. Anyone who insults Cornell and denies his talents has obviously never heard that album. Back in 88 or 89 Axl talked about how great Cornell was, and I had never heard him. About a year or so later, I heard Soundgarden and truly realized Axl had good taste. LOL!

I love them, but don't know many people who do.

Axl is much more diverse than that! He also likes Frank Sanatra and Bessie Smith. There are just to many to mention. I would really like to know what he is into now.

Title: Re: Axls taste in music:

Right now, he's probably into Nazareth, Supertramp, Run-DMC, The Bangles, Bulletboys, and Cinderella. In other words, he likes bands that dont release albums. :D

Title: Re: Axls taste in music:

Just speculating, but I reckon he'd be into Muse - epic sounding, almost Queen like

Run DMC and The Bangles have both put out albums of new material in the past few years.......

Really? I didnt know that. Be sure not to tell Axl about that mythical Bangles album that came out. He might stop "finishing touches" on CD and start spending his time on Bangles message boards! :D

he's got good taste indeed. Jane's is one of my alltime fav bands, Axl was a fan of them even before they had an album out. they rehearsed next door to GN'R back in the mid 80s.

Axl was a big fan of U2 in 1993. That's what I read in an Guns n roses fanzine from 1993.

Yea sounds so diverse as if he had no particular taste.

Axl gives all type of music a chance which is cool . I don't share the same taste in music with him but  I definetly don't like one of the same thing. That's why u should like different things so you don't get tired of them.

He also said that he has always idolized Aerosmith so I'm sure he was thrilled to open for them in the 80's.

some other acts n?artists the man likes (or liked at some point in his life that we - the fans - are not a part of anymore, it seems): fiona apple, queen, cure, todd rundgren, john lennon, stones, zeppelin, steely dan, rob zombie, sex pistols, nirvana, elton john (especally the early work til 1975), who, alice cooper, hanoi rocks, grateful dead, pink floyd, fear, germs, derek & the dominos, aerosmith, eagles n?don henley, bar-kays, metallica (at least "fade to black"), david bowie, tom petty, qeensryche, saigon saloon, nwa, patti smith...

...but talking about axls taste of music, you might consider the following statement "I'm a big Metallica fanatic. I like the new Queensr?che record. We listen to everything. Pop, it's hard to say, if you tell someone you like the new Michael Jackson song, everybody thinks you like everything Michael Jackson ever did. So, it's weird to have to say what you like. We usually like to get into a song or even a part of a song of just about anybody. We'll sit down and go 'nah, that sucks, but there's that one bass part that's cool.' " axl

I'm sure he's got a Ferrari in his fleet of vehicles. Why do people like you just discount what someone says instead of adding something to the conversation? If you were gonna say I was wrong, you could have at least given an example of a car he owns. You are now on my ignore list.

Axl likes all kinds of music. Someone mentioned in an interview (IIRC) that Axl used to give him a credit card to go out and buy a bunch of different albums for him.

I think thats a major difference between Axl and Slash

Axl has always kept his ear to the ground in terms of new bands/acts whereas Slash has always stuck to his traditional roots.

Slash's playing in VR is a little more modern in parts, but its still fairly traditional RnR

I think it was in one of those GNR books that came out recently, I saw a list of Axl's favorite songs from some time in the early 90s.  I wish I remembered what was on it.  I know one of them was Fade to Black by Metallica.

axls 3 all time favourite songs (mentioned in the early 90?s by mick wall - the guy getting dissed in "get in the ring" on UYI2):

 "d?yer mak?er" - led zeppelin

lol lol ?I Fear to ask but does he talk to you everyday as well?
The fleet apart, Didn't he own a Ferrari? We've seen a pic of him with a silver one.
Not that speed is important, but Getting into the band right now sounds a bit too quick for a guy in his position...IMHO
Moreover, I didn't know he needed those carers. Is he ill and bedridden? lol lol...
