Title: Green Day's Anti-War Video
Post by: journey on August 12, 2005, 05:26:30 AM
Green Day's new music video, "Wake Me Up When September Ends",  deals with a young man and his girlfriend who have a great life together, but for whatever reasons he joins the army thinking it is his only shot at supporting them.  Once he gets there, however, he realizes the enormous mistake he has made.

This video is significant because even though it doesn't come right out and say it, you can see in the guy's face that what the recruiter told him and what is reality, greatly differ.

In my opinion, this video couldn't have come out at a more relevant time. There's been such an influx of army commercials lately. Recruitment is in high demand.

Do you think this video will have any influence?

Is "September" considered new? I think I've seen it first like 3-4 months ago. I thought "Jesus Of Suburbia" was the new one (I've seen the video premiere, it is great but lasts 9 minutes lol).

As for "September", it really is anti-war but when you listen to the lyrics of "Holiday", this one is already pretty much anti-war:

(...) Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men (Hey!)
A gag, A plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

(...)

"The representative from California has the floor"
Zieg Heil to the president gasbag
Bombs away is your PUNISHMENT
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your GOVERNMENT
Bang bang goes the broken glass land
Kill all the fags that DON'T AGREE
trials by fire setting fire
Is that a way that's MEANT FOR ME?

I don't know if "September"'s video will have an influence or make a difference, but I'm sure it means a lot to the young americans who don't know what to do about this army thing.

A torrent, yup, I'll try to find it. September premiered here in Europe a good while ago (I'd say 3 months ago). I d/l Jesus a while ago, let me try to find this again.

Ok, found it, PM sent. It's 438 MB (MPEG2). If you can't connect to the tracker, just leave your BT client open. Check Google if you don't know about torrents.

Edit: damn, the torrent is down. If you do a search on Google you may find a working tracker, that's how I found it the first time. Maybe I can upload it to DIME, I don't know. I'll let you know.

I only just saw the "September" video because it was posted on the MTV.com homepage, I'm assuming that means it only just came out in America?

At first I thought I was watching a commercial with really bad acting... The joining the army thing kinda came out of left field though and made me enjoy the video more.

Jesus of Suburbia is definetaly the best song on the album... Will could you PM me that file as well?

The file is way too big, I'll upload it on www.dimeadozen.org tonight - TTD rules are just too strict. I hope you have an account on DIME and you can d/l torrents, because the video (which was recorded live in NYC) rules!

Cool Will thx!

So you are saying we have to open an account on DIME and then we'll be able to watch the vid?

Then you're gonna be able to download it. You have to download it, before watching it.

Ok, download it over there: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=54833&hit=1

Will, I tried to sign up and this is what popped up:

At the moment, there are at least 100,000 registered users at www.dimeadozen.org, the maximum allowed under DIME's current configuration.

Yeah if you don't already have an account there, you just have to keep trying. People's accounts get deleted all the time so if you're lucky you can get one in 5 minutes (just hit refresh), sometimes it takes an 1 hr., but you'll get one.

I have come to absolutely love this CD, I play it all the time. I was always a casual fan of GD, and had maybe one of their CDs. This thing is really well done. It's nice to hear a group actually sing about something too.

Well certainly it will make a difference, in "some" guys, anyway lots of people  in the business seem to be against the war, but no one is  really making something different than expressing their opinions -- wich is cool dont misunderstand me-- but, nothing else. As long as no one is making nothing but complaining, there aren't gonna be changes. By the way GREEN DAY SUCKS!!! ;)

His name is Jason White.  I think he plays in another band called The Influence or something like that.

I went to high school with them.  Well, two of them.  I wasn't friends with them or anything, I was just barely acquainted with them.  But they are the only famous people I've ever met.  I guess they were nice guys, I never heard anyone say anything bad about them and they were always friendly towards me, the few times we had any contact.

Does anyone know?

You really are worthless.? People are fighting and dying right this moment to keep you safe and this is the kind of crap you come out with.? Your teenage nihilism is rather tiresome and the multitude of spelling errors shows that perhaps you come benefit from some time in the military.? They will send you to college and maybe even make you into a man if such a thing is possible.

Did you mean "can benefit from some time in the military"?
Spelling errors can happen on a board, and D is certainly not the worst here, so you should find another angle to attack people who think different.

One point and I will stop and wont make this political

I hate when people say

"People are in Iraq protecting us"

Did I miss something or were Iraq planning to attack us sometime this century? I dont think they were gonna attack us, so how are the soldiers protecting us over there?

I love the soldiers but joining the Army and going to Iraq would be ridiculous at this point in time.

For those who havent kept score, we havent been attacked in 4 years, Bush used Fear to get re-elected and is continuing to use Fear now.

We got attacked Sept 11th only because our intelligence fucked up.

Bush is creating an illusion of safety cause honestly whether people want to believe it or not, if terrorist want to attack, there is really nothing anyone can do about it.

I hate to share that harsh reality to some of you who live in a fantasy world but if they want to attack us, we cant stop that.

Plus Iraq was not the very who attacked the Us. correct me if I'm wrong.
most terrorists are likely to think they are fighting and dying for their people, which is most unwelcome for the people.

I no way liken the solders to them, since they don't say that.
I don't doubt the solders loyalties and good intentions but I'm not sure if their fighting now will keep people safer than not fighting would, in the long run.

I probably don't need to point this out, but I do hope you realize that not all Americans feel that way.  You are referring to George Bush and his supporters.  While I acknowledge he won the election and believe that all Americans have to take responsibility for that, I just hope you know we don't all agree with his politics.

It's all here, just as the anti-War people have been saying from day 1, this war is a disaster:

"The approval rate for Mr. Bush's handling of Iraq plunged to 34 percent in last weekend's Newsweek poll."

"What we expected to achieve was never realistic given the timetable or what unfolded on the ground," said a senior official involved in policy since the 2003 invasion."

Bush's war approval rating is at 34% right now from Newsweeks latest poll. The liars in the White house have finally come and admitted their plan was flawwed and are cutting their goals short.

If you feel so strongly about the war, then maybe you should put your money were your  mouth is and go "protect" us from the bad guys who weren't attacking us.
