Are you a complete beginner or just moving onto electric for the first time after learning on acoustic?

If you are a complete beginner, get an acoustic, and learn how to play that - learn all your standard open chords, how to strum, start introduce picking patterns (arpeggios and alternate picking), incorporate simple bass runs into your chord changes in order to start getting to grips with scales, and before you know it you will have won half the battle towards becoming a decent guitarist. Patience is the key... and practice.

It might seem annoying, frustrating and long winded, but in the long run it'll put you miles ahead in terms of both technical prowess and creativity of the endless gimmick guitarists that head straight to the internet looking for tabs for "Highway to Hell" without knowing a simple A-major chord if it hit them in the face.

Just my 2 cents...
