Hendrix
Cliff Burton
John Bonham

Three of the best ever at their respective intruments.  A raw psychadelic power rock trio in the tradition of Cream.

Off the top of my head, I think that the following gang would make a great Rock/Soul combo:

Bass - James Jamerson (Legendary Motown Seesion bassist)
Keys  - Billy Preston (Played keys for the Beatles and the Stones, amongst others. No relation to 'Bill S. Preston Esquire')Drums - Charlie Watts
Rythym Guitar/Vocals - Prince
Lead Guitar - Hendrix

When British radio listeners were given a choice of a supergroup, this is how it turned out.

Singer: Robert Plant
Guitarist: Jimmy Page
Bassist: John Paul Jones
Drummer: John Bonham

So, of all the choices they had, they just chose the 4 members of Led Zeppelin!  :hihi: For me, here is my ultimate band.

Singer, Guitarist, and "frontman": Chuck Schuldiner.
Guitarist: Yngwie Malmsteen
Bassist: Steve Harris, duh.
Drummer: Paul Mazurkiewicz (Cannibal Corpse)

Here we would have Chuck and Yngwie's skill with prog music, the great Iron Maiden bassist, and the blast beats from Maz. I think this group could play any style of metal.

Vocals: Scott Weiland
Lead Guitar: Steve Clark
Rhythm guitar / Backing Vocals : Mark Lanegan
Bass / Backing Vocals : Duff Mckagan
Drums/ Backing Vocals : Dave Grohl

I can only imagine what songs could come out of a session with Weiland writting the lyrics and Steve Clark writting the riffs, too bad it can never happen.
