Title: Songs that sound like GNR (or vice versa)
Post by: Scabbie on July 01, 2005, 12:10:17 PM
One of my friends purchased and listened to Led Zep's 'Physical Graffiti' today for the first time, and immediately said how The Rover (track 2) sounds like 'Rocket Queen'. I never noticed, but the similarity (in parts) is uncanny - check out the end of Rocket Queen and parts of the Rover and you'll get it.

Any other GN'R tracks you know of that sound like other songs?

Covers don't count, smartasses!

I always thought "Lit Up" by Buck Cherry had alot of GNR in it.

The guitarist from recently broken up Buckcherry, Keith Nelson is a huge Slash fan... he contributed to Dirty Little Thing on Contraband so the coincidence there is a good one.

There is a song by Elastica, called 'Line Up', that really has a GNR vibe to it. I noticed it the first time I heard it ten years ago, and I still think the same thing about it today. Lyrically, its something Izzy could've wrote. If Axl is an Elastica fan, and he ever decides to do another cover album, I would bet money that this song is on it.

I know some of you are going to laugh with this one....

The first time I heard the band "Space Hog", in 1995 when they released "Resident Alien" I thought that it was Axl's voice in some parts of one of the singles, I don't remember at this time if it was "Cruel to Be Kind" or "In the Meantime " but I remember that by that time I heard a rumour about a possible Axl Solo Project going on and when I heard the song I thought it was him... I never tought it was GNR, but Axl alone.

I buy that CD because of that and I really like the album, specially that 2 songs... and I still think the singer voice sound a little bit like Axl in some parts... funny.

 :hihi:

I just thought of another song with a major GNR vibe. The Four Horsemen's 'Rockin is my Business, and Business is Good'. For those of you that have never heard of them, their bass player Haggis, actually played a concert or two with GNR while Duff was getting married. And there is also a song about Axl on this album called 'Tired Wings'. The Four Horsemen were a cool band. They were like Lynrd Skynrd with major attitude. Too bad they only lasted for one album. Its a hard album to find. If you see it, I highly recommend it!

The intro to The Darkness' -  I believe in a thing called love sounds a lot like the intro to Chinese Democracy

Right on, I'd noticed this. I'd consider changing the song / riff If I was Axl as its a little bit too similar!

If you were to pick one album as an inroduction for a GN'R fan, what would it be?

Great thread. I believe songs by Zeppelin or Nazareth sound a lot like GN'R.

To boost this thread, do you think there's a singer like Axl?
Singer of Nazareth sounds virtually alike. Also this one who's vocals are on Demonball.

New Rose, good point! I also thought there were many similarities between Nazareth and GNR. They were obviously a big influence on GNR. When I bought TSI, I was very disappointed that GNR picked 'Hair of the Dog'. I think 'Shot Me Down', 'Beggars Day', or 'Please Dont Judas Me' would have been a much more adventurous choice.

Yeah those would be a good choice. And I would definitely prefer Love Hurts than Since I don't have you.

I would have preffered anything to 'Since I Dont Have You'. LOL!! That is an incredibly shitty opening track to what would be their last record. Considering the trouble they supposedly had recording the track, I'm surprised that it made it onto the record. Something else I hated about the album was the 'Big Dumb Sex' outro on 'Buick Makane'. They should have either did the whole song, or left it off completely. Axl singing the line "I wanna fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, you" is very lame. Chris Cornell sings the song with passion, Axl did it with zero feeling whatsoever. If you dont believe me, go buy Soundgarden's 'Louder Than Love' album.

TSI seems to me a jam record sometimes. The songs are placed in a bad order in my opinion.
The ending always made me think (I don't care about you) that this song was dedicated to the gn'r fans.   ::)

Walk This Way by Aerosmith. Solos, all the scratches and palm mutes. When you listen to this song and know how to play it, u can rele tell how much of an influence Joe was on slash.

I think Waking The Dead by L.A. Guns has a very old GN'R feel to it.  And holy shit, another Dangerous Toys reference on this message board?  I'm stunned.

Horsemen kicked all kinds of ass! There is a second album out there, "Hardly good at barely getting by" or something like that, they finished when Frank Starr was killed in about '95.
Excellent recommendation...

Also Checkout anything by Love/Hate, all LA sleeze, should of been as big as GNR.
Check out the tracks "Spit" & "Evil Twin" off "Wasted in America"
