Title: What Do You Consider "Earth Shattering"?
Post by: jameslofton29 on June 28, 2005, 10:08:18 PM
I was reading some of Tommy's old interviews, and I stumbled upon one that I hadn't read in awhile, and he made an interesting comment(or hype) about CD. He said that CD has six or seven songs that are "earth shattering". Out of all the comments made by bandmembers, this one stands out among them all. If he is indeed telling the truth, and not just blowing smoke, then I'm gonna have to side with the extremely positive people on this board and say that CD will be the greatest album of all time. There isnt very many truly earth shattering songs in existence. Which leads to my question. What songs have you listened to that you truly consider "earth shattering"? If I had to pick, I would say 'Kashmir' by Led Zep. That song always sent chills up my spine. I might also classify 'The End' by The Doors as earth shattering.

If there's a band out there who's music I consider the most  earth shattering , definetly Led Zeppelin. I think Welcome to the Jungle was earth shattering at the time when it was released, most 90's to modern music can kiss my ass.

jimmy, COUNTLESS other earth shattering songs?? I dont think so. Of course, there's countless great songs, but earth shattering? Nah. But I guess its a matter of opinion. I was hoping no one would pick GNR songs. Cause as you know, when it comes to GNR, we're all a little biased. LMAO!!

Jesus Of Suburbia - not earth shattering to all , but when I heard it and realized Green Day could write a song like that it shattered my earth! It's now my favorite song.

If Democracy has one song with as many twists and turns but still telling a cohesive story as Jesus Of Suburbia I'll be happy.  :peace:

Thats only my OPINION!  :nervous:

Hard for a list because earth shattering is just a bad word to use..

I'm sure the music is good and he also wants to pump it up as well..

Yeah, it was a strange choice of words to describe their music. Probably just hyping it. But I was curious as to what songs you guys would classify in that category. It took me awhile to think of the 2 songs I chose. Which makes it hard to believe that CD has 6 or 7 earth shatterers, when I cant even think of 6 or 7 from all the bands in the world combined. I can think of several albums of that magnitude(AFD, Dark Side of the Moon, Physical Graffiti), but very difficult to think of earth shattering songs.

Only earth shattering albums I can think of:

Are You Experienced
Electric Ladyland

Way ahead of their time, changed the face of music forever.

yeah man great albums.. I guess an earth shattering group was the beatles or elvis, they were ahead of their time.. They still have the power to debut number one with the same hits they released 50 times already
Hendrix was ahead of his time.. I think chuck berry was ahead of his time..

Earth shattering, hmmm.? Let's see..

In terms of musical impact and social relevency, only 2 in my lifetime.

"God Save The Queen" by The Sex Pistols
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana

For me personally, besides the 2 mentioned above I've got a few that come to mind.

The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary", GNR's SCOM, Crass's "So What?", Janes Addiction's "Mountain Song", NIN's "Head Like A Hole", The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army", The Cure's "Fascination Street" and AIC's "Man In The Box" to name a few that still resonate with me each time I hear them.

DISCLAIMER: The Nirvana "SLTS" mention was in no way meant to start any kind of
"Dead Horse" BS, so please refrain.

But, dude, Nirvana like..sucks dude...like he doesn't know how to play guitar and just screams..dude. ;D Earth shattering probably means, to Tommy, epic and heavy-both lyrically and musically.

Title: Re: What Do You Consider "Earth Shattering"?
Post by: Neemo on June 29, 2005, 10:03:10 AM
I think Tommy meant "earth shattering" to mean, grand scale or epic or enormous, the term was used, IMO, as a description of how he feels about the songs, not neccessarily how the public will react to them. That kind of asumption would just be ignorant. (that the new songs will be instant classics and be compared to Stairway to Heaven or whatever other classic song)

When he said earth shattering I envisioned "Maddy" for some reason. Personally I think alot of the songs will be similar in makeup. to me Maddy sounds huge. much like estranged. I personnally don't think that there will be many rocker type songs on CD

LOL Madman, nice.

"Earth shattering" is such a subjective term, it all depends on whose Earth is being shattered. ?

I don't think anything from CD will have any kind of musical/social relevence in a "big picture" scenario but I'm sure a tune or 2 might have that affect on more than a few Axl fans.

Hendrix-Machine Gun, Voodoo Child-Slight Return
The Who-Won't Get Fooled Again
Dylan-Desolation Row, Visions of Johanna, It's Alright Ma..I'm Only Bleeding (could name 10 more as well)
Soungarden-Jesus Christ Pose
Gnr-Coma, Civil War, Estranged-the obvious AFD singles
Zep-How Many More Times
Stones-Gimme Shelter
AIC-The Rooster
Zappa-Willie the Pimp
Miles Davis-Miles Runs the Voodoo Down
Beatles-Hey Jude
Nirvana-SLTS, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
The Replacements-Can't Hardly Wait, Here Comes a Regular, Alex Chilton, Unsatisfied
?ps I am sure I'm forgetting alot of my other favorites

You also have to remember Tommy's point of reference-The Replacements. Their songs hardly ever ventured over 4 minutes. So, epic and earth shattering to him could be 5-6 minute songs. To Tommy, something like PC is epic and earth shattering. I wonder if Tommy ever actually sat and listened to the Illusions from cover to cover? Or did he just learn the songs Axl told him they would play live? Hmmmm

I'd venture to say he's heard parts of the Ilusions throughout, but not in their entirety and no way in one sitting.

Can any non diehard sit and listen to the UYI's cover to cover?

I think I was done with them by mid 92! Now, I listen to the same set of about 8-12 songs. Actually, I rarely listen to old Gnr anymore-just sporadically-same goes for the new/old songs of 2001. Still waiting on that new cd-wow-14 years! Scary that I even still discuss it. :o

was probably no reason to learn all the songs.. Axl must have said these are the songs we are going to play.. Wonder if they still remember them.. if you have 8 guys you are going to spend time learning only what you need ,if the album comes out I'm sure only staples will stay like scom, PC wttj, nr patience

Whatever you guys say. What else would they have done with all their free time in the studio w/out Axl? I'm sure they would've done more than write new stuff and practice like 12 songs, we'll never know anyway so no point in arguing

I'm sure all the members had a good listen to the work of old gnr throughout. They're not the bumble. I bet Tommy prefers UYI to AFD.

In talking about earthshattering music n Zep, "ahem.. ♪♩♪♩♩..♩..♩You need coolin Baby I'm not foolin..", Whole lotta love just pops into my head. The lyrics are not exactly earthshaking or anything tho.
I'm quite fussy that I don't call so many songs "earthshattering".

I'm counting on the outcome of the Riyadh trend.

I'd bet otherwise, doubting his Minneapolis punk pedigree would lead him to find much on the UYI's
even remotely interesting/relateable.  Too much butt rock excessiveness.

Just speculating of course.

well I stand by that entirely

I am a huge GNR fan, but I am also a huge fan of music and I dont limit myself to just GNR
It would be very naive of me to allow myself to think that GNR were the sole artists capable of producing "earth shattering" music

there are too many to name (hendrix, Jeff buckley, led zepplin, soundgarden, miles davis, dylan just to name a few)

Some great pics, guys. Everyone's got pretty good taste in music. Someone mentioned how they thought Tommy just meant epics. Thats true. And someone also said they expect very few rockers on CD. I agree 100 percent. We're probably gonna get alot of November Rains and very few Jungles. But there's nothing wrong with that. It would be interesting to know if Tommy considers the songs we heard in 2002 'earth shattering'. I think a studio version of 'The Blues' might rate in that category.

Forgot some more:
Radiohead-Fake Plastic Trees, Paranoid Android, How to Disappear Completely, Exit Music (For A Film)
The Clash-London Calling
Sex Pistols-Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen
U2-Bad, Sunday Bloody Sunday, One, Mothers of the Disappeared, One Tree Hill
Pearl Jam-Alive
more The Who- Who Are You, Overture/It's A Boy, Amazing Journey, Baba O' Riley. Hell, they had a ton in the early 70's!

Most of the songs mentioned are mere tremors, if you ask me. Because of the impacts from their Seismic Waves they may seem shaking but on the Richter scale they are slight twitches with the magnitudes of 2 and under. Not that it scales the beauty of the songs. :peace:

I thought the flavour of hair metal might put off a punk kid a bit and that of stones could be a turnon.

Yep, pure speculation. We must ask poor Tommy one of these days.

Ppbebe kind of beat me to it, but I?d think Tommy would probably prefer the Illusions. He has stated that he didn?t think much of GNR during their initial run, and I?m sure they were a little too pop metal for his tastes. I?d assume he likes the material he?s helped create for Chinese Democracy though. I?d also assume that Chinese Democracy will be closer to the Illusions than to Appetite. But, yeah, like everyone else, I?m just assuming.

As for earth-shattering songs, I immediately think of ?Kashmir? by Led Zeppelin. Maybe ?Paint It, Black? by the Rolling Stones. And to a lesser extent, maybe ?Three Days? and ?Then She Did?? by Jane?s Addiction.

disease, GREAT pick!! 'Three Days' is an incredible song. But you're right about 'Kashmir'. In my opinion, 'Kashmir' is the perfect example of an earth shattering song. 'Stairway to Heaven' is considered their opus. People are wrong. Its 'Kashmir'.

Me too likes it when they put new spin on any familiar songs but honestly I'm not a big fan of solo acts with the exception of the case like NIN where an artist makes all the parts.

Kashmir, alias CIA = Celt India Arabia, is real mind-blowing. I like it the best of all Zep songs, then Night flight, No quarter, stairway or whatever the second. But when it comes to earthshattering sound, I'd say, it gotta be "Whole Lotta Love, led with Moby Dick". It has the definite sound of the shaking of the earth owing mostly to John Bonham and JPJ.

BTW the theme of 2001 a space odyssey might be the one. By Strauss was it?
Or else some compositions of Wagner, Beethoven, Bach and so forth are earthshattering in like manner.
Such Old music from the ice age?  Aye, The song remains the same. :headbanger:

Nay, Wow, true. I've never imagined this.
Their good cut n paste / quote job I've unfortunately come across is chiefly Rolling Stones' influence on the UYI songs.
Well, Jimmy Page himself is supposed to be very good at it too?or rather, a master of it. :-\

Roberts new album is really cool. Sounds a very genuine album, one that he wanted to record, but without thinking about it too much (which I believe maybe Axl's problem). I've met him a couple of times, great bloke!

Must go and listen to No Quarter, thats the second Zep track in a week that someone has said to me sounds like GNR!

I haven't heard any 'Earth Shattering' albums recently, although I was very impressed by Muse's latest album, its sounded very unique and epic.

Nesquick, I agree with you about 'The Blues', although I think the entire song is incredible. I think its one of the so called 'Big Guns'. I have a feeling it's gonna be one of the major highlights of the album.
