Title: question about seeing IP addresses Post by: August 18th on June 27, 2005, 07:31:32 PM it's come to my attention that some forum members (at another forum) are capable of identifying other members' IP addresses and even finding out if that person has an "alias", meaning another user name. in other words they can see it if 2 user names belong to the same person. and these are regular board members, not admins or mods. do any of you know anything about this? because i would like to know how the hell it is possible to do that. just curious. help will be appreciated, thanx. :smoking:
Title: Re: question about seeing IP addresses Post by: jarmo on June 27, 2005, 07:34:58 PM It depends on the forum I guess.
/jarmo Title: Re: question about seeing IP addresses Post by: August 18th on June 27, 2005, 07:38:05 PM well, the IP address of the poster doesn't show up next to the user name or anything. one person at this forum pretended to be another person at that forum and then someone came in annoucing that "i know who this is", and then proceeded to post the other user name of that person. i'm just curious as to how this could be possible. and no, we're not talking about me. :smoking:

Then I'm pretty sure that the IP address was NOT the source that "someone" used to out the "pretender"? Title: Re: question about seeing IP addresses Post by: August 18th on June 27, 2005, 08:10:28 PM well, the IP address of the poster doesn't show up next to the user name or anything. Other commun thing is to make a netstat in a DOS window to verify what IP your friend is using, there are a lot of strategies to see the IP but if you don't want to anyone know your IP you should use a firewall. :peace:
Man i hope people understand this cause is much easier in spanish. : ok: Title: Re: question about seeing IP addresses Post by: August 18th on June 28, 2005, 10:56:12 AM Well I work for a Internet company, and to see IP address you need a program that can comunicate with your server provider. (unless they are mods or admins) nice to know, thanx. If you use a firewall it is highly unlikely anyone will be able to see you on the network or internet... that is until you interact with another computer on a network...ie if you browse the internet, ftp etc your IP address will be collected in any of the visited site's log files. if someone posts a message on a forum, you will almost always get an IP address as there has to be interaction between you and the forum the upshot is that most people have their IP addresses collected by someone when they are browsing alternatively you can use a proxy server, ie you connect via a specific server on the net which has been set up so that only the IP address of the proxy computer is shown and not your IP address...basically, the proxy server hides your details...there are down sides to using a proxy, like slower browsing etc there are probably ways to spoof your IP address but thats beyond my knowledge... |
