Title: Tommy's position with GNR
Post by: Shoeboy on June 26, 2005, 11:29:42 AM
I was scrolling through the homepage at sanctuaryrecords.com, and clicked the link to Village Gorilla Head.  In the blurb on the page for the record, they decribe Tommy as the bass player and musical director of the new GNR?  I had never heard him referred to in this way, and found it interesting, especially coming from Sanctuary.

Anyone ever notice this?

 ???

hes not General Thomas Eugen Stinson for nothin

my guess is that aside from Axl, Tommy is probably the "captain" of the band

I thought he was the severe bandmaster for rehearsal.

Sucks he really doesn't have much to direct right now.

yeah  i think he leads the band through the rehearsals (as axl said in rio) because axl isn`t really rehearsing with them and there has to be someone who tells what to do...  (which songs etc...)

I was playing video games last night, but my Aunt told me this morning that Tommy was on SNL last night. She said he sounded really good. I have no idea what songs he played though.

Yeah, I think when Axl is off in AxlRoseland Tommys job is to take control. Its my guess that hes second in command to Axl.  :peace:

it must have been a re-run of when the Replacments played SNL in 1986
it's listed on the link you posted - Season 11 episode 7

Are you sure it wasn't a rerun of the Craig Kilborn show from last year?

tommy is great. he is definetely a key in the new band.
His bass lines on the blues (especially the end) are fantastic.(you hear them clearly on Rio version).

Yes you do. And take a listen to SCOM, Chinese Democracy, and even PC from Rio. Or take a listen to Bucket's solo part in Madagascar -Tommy and Brain lock in to a rock solid groove. The rhythm section is running the majority of the songs at Rio. The Blues is a fantastic example of his playing ability. I really hope the finished product for CD, Blues and Maddy reflect the looser, quicker pace of Rio-especially Bucket's bluesier solo in Madagascar. ps That is me in the pics next to Tommy on the bar with the Heineken! 10 rows down and first pic on left! I'm an official groupie....and a dork!

I agree, tommy was a wonderful addition to the band. Let's hope these guys share the stage again.

definitely can't wait to see him live with GN'R again

in the meantime I had hoped he would play south florida...
but he didn't  :crying:

well, means I'll have to save up all my enthusiasm for when GN'R play...
I can't wait!  I'm gonna be hooting and hollering my head off - "Tommy!!!!!"  :D

Pandoa, she said he was on SNL. I believe it, although I didnt see it myself. Maybe it was a rerun or something. Was he on SNL when his solo album came out?

I remember back at the Moline, IL show in 2002 Tommy definitely seemed to be the band "leader" or whatever. During YCBM, while axl was throwing sum little shitfit, Tommy was communicating w/ the band to keep the song going & pretty much took charge of the situation.

It's also very ironic that The Replacements had slagged on GNR/axl back in the day & now Tommy's GnR's band leader when the axls' conduct is even worse now than what is was when the slagging took place. Everyone needs to get paid i guess.

Tommy's bass lines on IRS seem great too. It makes me think to Cypress Hill bass playing (one of the only hip-hop band I really like).
isn't Axl a fan of Cypress?

I still find myself listening to Tommy's album. I'm looking forward to hearing his influence in GNR.
